We will discuss Susan Leigh Star's “Layers of Silence, Arenas of Voice: The Ecology of Visible and Invisible Work,” published in Computer-Supported Cooperative Work in 1999. The article deals with the challenges and risks of automating work processes without due consideration of all the invisible work done in an organization that systems designers might overlook.

One of the more annoying characteristics of our coastal elites is their incessant virtue signaling. Every life choice - from drinking from plastic water bottles to driving electric cars to deciding to have children - is presented in terms of what Travis Rieder, the Johns Hopkins bio-ethicist and author of CATASTROPHE ETHICS, calls the “purity ethic”. Everybody these days seems greedy for virtue. But this greed, Rieder argues, isn't realistic in an age of increasingly moral complexity. So, in our KEEN ON conversation, Reider lays out a path for leading a (reasonably) decent life which navigates between ethical fundamentalism and nihilism. Travis Rieder, PhD, is an associate research professor at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, where he directs the Master of Bioethics degree program. He holds secondary appointments in the departments of Philosophy and Health Policy and Management. His first book, IN PAIN (HarperCollins), was named an NPR Best Book of 2019, and his TED Talk on the same topic has been viewed more than 2.5 million times. His second book, CATASTROPHE ETHICS (Dutton), will be published on March 5, 2024. Travis has been interviewed by Terry Gross on Fresh Air and his opinion writing has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and Psychology Today. Tonight's 1st guest started having Sasquatch sightings when he was 13. The 1st time he saw a Sasquatch was when he had gone with his family on a trip to see Mount St. Helens, in their RV. After finding an RV campsite, they pulled in and started to get things squared away. Not being one to enjoy glamping, he grabbed his pack and started walking down an old logging road, that led into the campsite, looking for a place where he could set up a camp of his own. After walking about a mile down that road, he found what he considered to be a great spot to set up his camp, so he dropped his pack and got everything set up. Was it a great spot to set up camp, though? It wasn't long before he found out.When tonight's 2nd guest was growing up, he had been warned numerous times, by his grandfather, not to venture onto the back part of his grandparent's farm. For years, he obeyed his grandfather's rule. One day, though, not understanding why his grandfather told him to stay off the back part of the farm, he decided to throw caution to the wind. That day, he took his sister with him to get some apples that grew back where he knew he wasn't supposed to go. Tonight's guest, David Bunt, is a farmer, in Cheshire, England who takes exception to people saying that Dogmen couldn't be extant in the U.K. That's because he's had multiple encounters with them. While it's true that he's had multiple encounters with Dogmen, due to how much trouble he has talking about his encounters, he's only going to share the details of his 1st encounter, on tonight's show. Even though Dave was in amazing shape when he had his 1st encounter, he was so terrified, he thought he was going to have a heart attack, when he was trading gazes with that Dogman. Instead of walking away, the best he could do was crawl away. Before he had that 1st encounter, David loved nothing more than going to the most remote areas he could find and camping there. After being so traumatized by his 1st encounter and others he had, after that, remote camping will never be the same for him, unfortunately.
