When Is Your Son Ready for a Smart Phone? Mr. de Vicente on Self-Mastery, Technology, and Parental Discernment

HeightsCast: Forming Men Fully Alive

In this week's episode, headmaster Alvaro de Vicente helps us develop a philosophy of technology. Building off previous conversations on The Forum with Cal Newport, Mr. de Vicente takes a deep dive into the topic of smartphones. In particular, he helps us answer the following questions: How can parents discern if a smartphone would be beneficial for their son?  When is the right time to entrust him with this powerful tool? Under what circumstances?  Will waiting to give your son a smartphone render him ill-prepared for college and beyond? More provocatively, is it correct to assume that holding off on the smartphone is merely delaying the inevitable? As Mr. de Vicente explains, parents' discussions of these questions ought principally to consider their son's level of self-mastery. Like any tool, if a smartphone is to be of help rather than harm, the user must be prepared to use it and not be used by it.  On a practical level, the two basic questions to be asked are: What are my son's current needs?  Can my son master this piece of technology?  To answer the first question, Mr. de Vicente suggests that parents consider:  The purposes of technology: communication, information, organization, and entertainment. The possible (objective) needs of the boy: calling, texting, GPS.  What tool--whether a smartphone, flip-phone, or some other device--will satisfy the specific needs without being detrimental to the boy's ultimate good. In order to answer the third point, it is helpful to look at whether a boy has demonstrated self-mastery in the following areas:  Property: clothes, school materials, sports equipment. Spaces: room, bed, closet, desk.  Time: morning and evening routines, weekends and holidays. Urges: speaking, food, desire to have a phone. While no-one is perfect, if a child has not displayed a certain level of self-mastery in these areas of his life, it will be hard for him to use a smartphone well. Indeed, it is far easier for a boy to put a shirt on a hanger or make use of a calendar than it is for him to resist the algorithms of technologies whose aim it is for him to be unable to. If he does not do the former, one ought not assume he will do the latter. In the end, using smartphones well is not a matter of learning how to navigate technology per se, which is a skill that is not learned with much difficulty. It is, rather, a matter of developing self-mastery, which is a virtue that requires both time and perhaps more than little toil.  Show Highlights  How to develop a personal philosophy of technology  In general, what is a good approach to smartphones? Questions parents should ask themselves when deciding whether their child needs (and is ready for) a smartphone What are the purposes of a phone?  Are all needs equal? How do you know if your child is capable of mastering a smartphone?  What parents can do to limit bad uses of technology  Does a high schooler need a smartphone in order to be prepared for college?  Is there a right age to give your child a smartphone? Challenge the assumption that the smartphone is inevitable for everyone  Some alternative phones to the traditional smartphone  What to do if a parent has mistakenly given their child a smartphone Also from The Forum  Digital Minimalism: Creating a Philosophy of Personal Technology Use Digital Minimalism: Creating a Philosophy of Personal Technology Use, Part II

Teaching boys to drive can be exciting, scary. and intimidating. Boys are more likely than girls to speed, drink while driving, and take chances when they have passengers in the car. "I think he thought driving was going to be super intuitive," says Carole, mom of Lucas, a newly-licensed driver. "When we started, he was like, 'Whoa, this is not at all what I thought it was going to be!' It's not Forza." No matter how many hours your son has logged Forza and other popular driving video games, it's a good idea to start his real-world driving adventure in a parking lot or other wide-open space where he can gain experience without worrying about other drivers. But even after your son has mastered the basics of driving, it can be unnerving for parents to hand over control of car. "It was definitely hard to see him drive off the very first time," Carole says. "It immediately brought me back to when he was in 5th grade and wanted to ride his bike to school. We don't live on a super bike-able road, so we talked about it and we biked it together and the day he rode off by himself, I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I just have to trust that everything I've done up to this point is going to be enough.'" Abortion laws part 5 (final part)

"For the next 45 years — not including the two years I was away in the Air Force — I was a practicing OB/GYN in Texas, conducting Pap smears, pelvic exams and pregnancy check-ups; delivering more than 10,000 babies; and providing abortion care at clinics I opened in Houston and San Antonio, and another in Oklahoma. Then, this month, everything changed. A new Texas law, known as S.B. 8, virtually banned any abortion beyond about the sixth week of pregnancy. It shut down about 80 percent of the abortion services we provide. Anyone who suspects I have violated the new law can sue me for at least $10,000. They could also sue anybody who helps a person obtain an abortion past the new limit, including, apparently, the driver who brings a patient to my clinic. For me, it is 1972 all over again. And that is why, on the morning of Sept. 6, I provided an abortion to a woman who, though still in her first trimester, was beyond the state's new limit. I acted because I had a duty of care to this patient, as I do for all patients, and because she has a fundamental right to receive this care." "Though we never ask why someone has come to our clinic, they often tell us. They're finishing school or they already have three children, they're in an abusive relationship, or it's just not time. A majority are mothers. Most are between 18 and 30. Many are struggling financially — more than half qualify for some form of financial aid from us. Several times a month, a woman confides that she is having the abortion because she has been raped. Sometimes, she reports it to the police; more often, she doesn't. Texas's new law makes no exceptions for rape or incest. Even before S.B. 8, Texas had some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country. That includes a 24-hour waiting period, meaning a woman has to make at least two visits to our clinic. Ultrasound imaging is mandatory. Parental consent is required for minors, unless they obtain court approval." "And yet, despite the restrictions, we were always able to continue providing compassionate care up to the legal limit of 22 weeks. It meant hiring more staff, everything took longer, but we managed. Until Sept. 1. Since then, most of our patients have been too far along in their pregnancies to qualify for abortion care. I tell them that we can offer services only if we cannot see the presence of cardiac activity on an ultrasound, which usually occurs at about six weeks, before most people know they are pregnant. The tension is unbearable as they lie there, waiting to hear their fate. If we detect cardiac activity, we have to refer them out of state. One of the women I talked with since the law took effect is 42. She has four kids, three under 12. I advised her that she could go to Oklahoma. That's a nine-hour drive one way. I explained we could help with the funding. She told me she couldn't go even if we flew her in a private jet. “Who's going to take care of my kids?” she asked me. “What about my job? I can't miss work.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

This book is different from most books on raising children. It is a plea for the parents to truly know and walk with God – for them to love God and His Word. In the correct order, focusing first on the parents, Andrew Murray then urges parents to sincerely and consistently love their children and in all tenderness and gentleness teach them as God also teaches us. Children are a most precious gift that we receive from God, and they deserve our very best. Our faithful training will not be lost on our children; this is a promise found over and over again in the Scriptures. If our hearts are right towards God and our children, the world's influence will not impact our children. We can and must exercise faith, so our children and our children's children will be able to impact the world for Christ and inherit eternal blessings. A few of the parenting topics covered in this book: * What sin did to the family and how to redeem that which was lost. * The distinct and also shared roles of fathers and mothers. * How and why to teach children manners. * How to show children the Scriptures in a way that takes root in the heart. * How to teach with a quiet, gentle spirit, as God teaches us. * How to intercede effectively in prayer for our children.

In this episode Jon & Stamos get together and talk about "cosmic bowling" and a great week of football for the state of North Carolina. Then it's time for "Best Trends”!  It's National Sons Day so the gang all brag about their sons and what they're up to these days. And October 1st is World Smile Day, so Jon shows us what his actual smile looks like under his veneers. After that, it's time for the "Troll Patrol” and this week's target is Maury Povich.  He asked his Facebook fans to rate his drip, so Jon obliges. Next up it's time to give some money away when Jon takes listeners phone calls as they play "How Much Is That Screen Actors Guild Residual Check?" Then it's time for "Who's Zooming Who” when comedian Kelsey Cook joins the show to talk about her trumpet playing Dad, foosball, and massages. And finally, in "Small Town News" a funeral home in NC put the wrong body in a woman's casket. This episode is Pretty, Happy, and Parental. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Parental Alienation topic is continuing and requires attention by us because it causes tremendous harm and disorders in our children. This issue must be addressed and tackled fully. Here are the links for you that I used in my episode. Divorce magazine Psychiatric Times  The following content has been taken from Psychiatric Times that talks on the treatment and prevention of parent alienation by Philip M. Koszyk, MD, William Bernet, MD   Many people often underestimate the power of parent alienation or brainwashing against a parent. Parental alienation (PA) profoundly affects both children and alienated parents. Children of PA are at increased risk for future trust and relationship issues, depression, and substance abuse. Dr. Garber, what is parental alienation? 2. So why does this happen? 3. What are the warning signs in terms of the other parent's behavior that he or she may be trying to turn the children against you? 4. Are there any other symptoms or perhaps behaviors to watch for in your children? Next week will cover: 5. So if there are enough red flags, should the parent confront the alienating parent about his or her actions? What's the best way to address these concerns? *Remember to LIKE, SHARE, RATE and REVIEW. Let me know which question triggered your interest? Which part of conversation was more beneficial for you? How would you answer the questions I asked? Thank you. Shua - شعا ع https://linktr.ee/Shuakhan My prayer and wish is that no one goes through this horrible abuse ever. Let us strive to get rid of this detrimental habit of abuse near and far.
