"I'll Spend Less In Retirement Than When I Was Working"   This is one of the most widespread assumptions—and financial media often reinforces it by suggesting you'll only need 70-80% of your pre-retirement income. However, the reality is often quite different. In early retirement, spending typically increases as retirees suddenly have more time for activities, hobbies, and travel that were perhaps squeezed out during their working years. Parental obligations can linger, with adult children sometimes relying on financial assistance well into their late twenties or thirties. Unexpected repairs, long-postponed home improvements, or even a burst of "retirement honeymoon" spending are common. Recognizing these patterns, and planning for them, can help set more realistic expectations for your retirement budget.   2. "I Don't Have Time to Recover from a Market Downturn Anymore"   It's natural to become risk-averse as retirement nears; no one wants to see years of savings diminished by a bear market. Today's retirees are living longer than previous generations—often enjoying 25, 30, or even 35 years in retirement. This expanded timeline means you still have the potential (and perhaps the need) to ride out stock market fluctuations and recover from downturns. Avoiding growth assets altogether in favor of perceived "safety" may actually represent a different kind of risk: the erosion of purchasing power due to inflation.   3. "I'll Only Spend Interest and Never Touch My Principal"   This "live-off-the-interest" approach may have worked in an era of higher interest rates, but it's limiting in today's environment. With the brutal flowers.Look, first of all… This is not the beginning of a poor-me story.This is a story of how I found moments of joy… and darkness… in my autistic life. Like Leonard Cohen sang in Suzanne, “among the garbage and the flowers.”But I found dark humor... every where.1972 was a hell of a summer… Room 1I first sought a diagnosis at 19. Following suicide attempt #1.I was driving after dark. Which I wasn't supposed to do… new family rule.See, I'd damaged our car the week before, making a hasty turn into our driveway near Jumping Deer Road in Katonah. Hit the damn stone wall on the way in.This was Westchester County, NY. Local code only allowed a nano break between the 18th-Century stones guarding our yard. Colonial heritage or something… masking slave labor.I'm in the doghouse. With parents already skeptical about letting me go to college. Not “mature” enough.Yet, when the hood and fender are finally fixed? They drop me off on a muggy, hazy June night. Out in the boonies at the old Amawak Service Center on Route 202.“Pick it up and bring it home. No side stops.” Then they instruct me, “Be… careful.” Rolling their collective 4 eyes.I pull out, then wait. The light's gotta change at the 4-lane intersection with Route 35 before I can head home.The light turns green. I go into a weird space in my head. There's… there's some reason I shouldn't turn left… yet… But I watch myself shrug, flick my signal switch, and turn. Right into two lanes of accelerating traffic coming right at me.Don't remember much more. Just the red, don't-turn-yet-idiot arrow. Staring at me brightly… through the windshield that used to be there.I survived. That classic, white 1965 Mustang… didn't. Barely street legal, 271-horse V8 under the hood. Maybe the most collectible American car of all time.A hand-me-down gift to our family from my father's father. Who bragged, “I had to jew the dealer down from 5 grand,” back when he bought it new in '65. A lot of money then.Um, things got tense at home.“You are responsible for your own actions. You are the cause here.”Parental meeting time.“Uh, I don't know what happened.” I couldn't stand these “meetings.” So many in my childhood. This was maybe the worst of all.“I don't know. It… it... just happened.”Making my parents even more furious. These were avid Ayn Rand readers. And my grandfather? He slept beside an orderly nightstand. Mein Kampf tucked tightly in its tidy drawer. My dead father's voice echoes coldly in my mind still. “You are responsible for your own actions. You are the cause here.” But, I stumble on. Making things worse… in my way.“Something's wrong. I don't know what. I'm having horrible visions. Hitting people with the car as I drive by. Hitting their bodies… bones…” I trail off. Into stony silence, I say, “And now something weird happened. I think… I think… maybe I should see a doctor…”Next thing I know, I'm sitting in front of a Westchester County caseworker. Cuz my parents felt a psychologist or private therapist cost too much.I had no idea what I was feeling… much less why.The intake experience was horrific.I felt… badgered.She called it… delicately. “Maybe the accident looked like an attempt to… maybe… harm yourself?” But she continued with a sledgehammer.“I know you have a secret you want to tell me.” Rinse, repeat… Rinse, repeat…I wanted so badly to please her. But had no idea what I was feeling… much less why.Worse yet? There were things I didn't want to tell her. Darker than the physical or sexual abuse she was probably check-listing. Things a traumatized kid might do… himself.I never went back. I told my parents I was uncomfortable talking to her.My dad rocked back in his dark, maple, Early American dining room chair. “Fine. That's your choice.”He paused. Looking directly at my mother as he said to me, “I can see you won't speak to this counselor. I see no reason to look for another for you to talk to. Your decision.”And that was that.We were all dying for freedom.Finally at 63, a psychologist specializing in autism gave me another name, Alexithymia.He said a lot of autistics can know something is wrong. But not know what. And baptized me, Autism Spectrum Disorder… with a side of ADHD.2016 was a good year. A damn fine year.But 1972 was a summer from hell.The last US troops shipped home, fleeing Viet Nam. Palestinians massacred Israelis at the Olympics. My father died that August. The week after he molested me for the last time.We were all dying for freedom.[music]Cuz… if you don't know us… how ya gonna love us.InterludeOkay. Here's the last frag I toss… today. Let's end with joyful moments. Among the dark. Let's end with survival.See, I'm giving you these fragments of my life…Cuz… if you don't know us… how ya gonna love us.And this is part of me, too…[music]I Don't Think I Had a “Personality” as a KidI was busy finding Infinity in a burnt-off ant leg…This one brings home the stakes.The moments of joy along the way… that drew a line under what could have been. Not if they fixed me. But maybe what all of our children could be.If we just listen to them. And support what they say they need.“What are you doing…?”My mother's voice was sharp.I'm lying spreadeagled on the backyard grass, face down.“I've called you three times.” Annoyed. “WHAT are you doing…?”I don't know it in Second Grade… But I have difficulties shifting attention when I'm lost in thought…I try to focus my ears…Then think back,review my short-term memory,and replay the last few moments.Trying to hear and translate anything she might have said while I'm in my private thought bubble…Already at 7, this process of “rehearsing” or “rewinding the tape” to interpret what's going on? It's an automatic, constant routine when I'm around… well, people.Checking for verbal mistakes, missed cues… Just trying to understand, what's going on…?So I'm still trying to sort it out,choose words carefully to explain,clearing my throat,moving my sleeping tongue,loosening my jaw,getting ready to speak…“HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”“Umm… Nothing…?” Close as I come to a lie at that age.I've been lying in the grass for an hour or so, exploring with my new magnifying glass.See, there was this great hobby shop in Johnson City. It had all kinds of cool science “toys.” And I had saved my 50-cent allowance for weeks to buy a “Real, hand-held, magnifying glass  —  made with ALL-METAL handle!!”I was entranced.Examining grass leaves, dew drops, and…Ants.Dozens of ants. One after another.Legs.Antennae.Mandibles.Eyes.Guiltily burning off the occasional leg with focused sunlight…Endless fascination…I was in the flow…“Okay. Whatever you are doing…” I wait for the command I know will end my timeless bliss… “Stop doing it. It's time for lunch.”I sigh. Roll over.And. Trudge. In.Hardly sounds like abuse, right…..??Imagine that last, delicious dream you're enjoying as you drowse in a warm snuggly bed… when you don't have to get up…My autistic joys are hard to explain to another person.Pretty much ANY non-autistic person.And trying to… drags me into Deep Philosophical Waters…Imagine that last, delicious dream you're enjoying as you drowse in a warm snuggly bed on a lazy Saturday morning when you don't have to get up…And someone screams, “GET UP!”Eyes pop open. Instantly. You're so startled, for a minute… you have no idea where you are, what you're doing, the time of day, the season…Now… imagine that… if you can…Every. Damn. Day. Many, many, MANY times a day… Every single day of your childhood.Torture.Being startled out of the flow? It's like that.Capisce? Ya dig? Feel me?That's as close as I can think of to explain my moments of autistic flow.Or, better yet, my autistic joys.That same joy you seeon an autistic kid's faceas he dances endlesslyin a sprinkler in the sun…If I had to guess, this is precisely what Being in the Moment, in the Now, maybe even Zen Satori…Mean.Gradually as I aged, these blissful moments became fewer and fewer…Now, that's all preamble to what I really wanna talk about…Here's the deal on Flow…I think that's where I spent most of my time as a young kid.When I wasn't interacting with family, a few schoolmates, parents, one teacher a year… the few humans I let into my life back then.And that time alone… Endlessly exploring, learning, feeling, being… was…Wordless delight.Gradually as I aged, these blissful moments became fewer and fewer… further and further and further apart… nearly gone…First, I was forced into a school system… That I was clearly not wired for.Rigid.Lockstep.Regimented.Regulated.BORING.No Free Time.To simply… explore.Later, of course, it got MUCH worse. Jobs, relationships, finances… Life in Modern Adult America.Like when I founded Unix World magazine. I was so high on the concept and the joy of process… My inner vision won us awards our first year. Western Publishing Association Best New Publication and Best Issue. Beating out Macworld and PC World.Yeah. We won awards. A couple months after I was fired from my own mag. Fired because… in my autistic mind… the game was Create the Most Amazing Publication… Ever.But the whole time, the world was shouting that it was Make the Most Money You Can… Right Now.Snake eyes. I lost.My natural state, left alone to my own devices? Wandering from moment to moment of… fascination.Now, I have some personal speculation to get off my chest.First… I don't think I had a native personality when I was a kid…At least not as bell-curve average humans understand a personality.My natural state, left alone to my own devices? Wandering from moment to moment of fascination. No motivations. No intentions. No (verbal) thought…So… I was either happy exploring in the fields… or with my chemistry set in the basement… or catching polliwogs in Spring pools…Or I was forced to don my “personality.”In other words,the language,facial expressions,body language,polite responses,social lies,and predictable actionsthat humans think of as “personality”…and that social contact demands.Which is so natural for most humans, they aren't even aware of it.Even though they must have it from me… to feel safe.But, for me, “personality” was likebeing dragged out of my comfy pajamas,forced intothe worst, most cumbersome, restrictive, awkward, embarrassing winter coat,ear muffs,muffler,heavy snow boots,and mittensyour mother ever stuffed you intoto shove you onto that bus to kindergarten…And “personality” still is suffocating. Today. In my 70s. Ten years after diagnosed as autistic and ADHD.Especially, “fun times”… They're the real killers.Parties.Intimate conversations…Shudder... Family holidays? So nightmarish, I wrote the 7-page narrative poem sneaking my mother's creepy g-d on high.These are all times I must adopt my “personality.” You know, to survive. No matter how much “fun” they're supposed to be.What pros call “masking”? Really nothing more than exhausting habits of behavior & speech. That I must shroud myself in. Like an embalmed mummy. Just so it's easy for other humans… to feel “comfortable” around me.Not an essential Self. Just, ya know, “personality.”Certainly not me. Nothing comfortable about it.I'm going to hazard a guess.Which may be narcissistic delusion… Flow seems awfully close to what the Buddha described as experiencing “no-self” vs. the “conditioned mind.”From at least age 2 on, I clearly remember lucid dreaming and long periods of time spent without verbal thought of any kind. Just perceiving, in awe and wonder…EVERYTHING.Until I had to interact with humans. Any humans. Even those I was required… to “love.”And donning the “personality”? The joy collapsed. Fast as a quantum waveform when you try to measure it. Not into pain…Collapsing into an all-absorbing effort.Intellectualizing every word,gesture,tone of voice of my own…Then interpreting all those of each and every human I was with at the time…and THEN determining precisely the right word,tone of voice,facial expression,and body attitude to project back…all at the same timeTo avoid being in trouble.Because I was… Bad.And I had to protect everyone around me from that.Every. Single. Second…And even at a young age, a growing sense of the need to protect others…From me.Because I was different. Because I hurt people without understanding. Because I acted as if I were “arrogant”… etc., etc.Like two divorces. Cuz I could be amazing for 3 to 6 months. Caring. Fun as hell. Then fall into deep depressions and work burnouts. Cuz I couldn't handle that much intimacy. Hell, that much time alone with another human…Because I was… Bad.And I had to protect everyone around me from that.Every. Single. Second… That I am with another human.Except very young children. And of course, animals… Since I was… 4 years old.Now since diagnosis, I found a few tricks.In 2019 when I first started writing about my autism, I was all about lists. Trying to “help” others. Took me a year or two to realize we are… every one of us autists… different. Different lives. Different needs and goals. Different survival skills.So I'm only an “expert” on my own life. Even if I am the only expert on that there is.Your mileage certainly will vary.But for me? My autistic life is not about “getting better.” Or fixing me. It's about knowing who I truly am. And what I truly need. Doing what I can to meet those needs.Then being… me.So I moved to the Country…Living in the trailer across the courtyardFrom my third, loving wifeWhere I can reduce sensory overload.Reduce the number of humans I talk with To only folks I feel comfortable around.And stopped failing at jobs I was never built to do.But I… now… can pursue those things that have brought me joy since childhood.Spending unstructured, unmeasured time on any of my passions…walking in the wildest Nature I have access to,baking bread,fermenting pickles,gardening,deep-focus while replaying a favorite movie… that seventh time,illustrating,writing,playing music,researching world events….so, so many others.When I pursue a “special interest”… alone? Sometimes it's nearly orgasmic… In fact, I've redefined my understanding of my passions.They're not a forbidden pleasure. A shameful quirk. Something I “waste time on” when there's nothing more important to do.They are my gateway to Bliss, Satori, Oneness… Maybe even whatever God is… or Isn't…I'm not talking toxic positivity. My autistic joys aren't some advanced spiritual state I've achieved in my 70s. And now, suddenly… I'm here to tell you how to make everything okay. And talk you into buying your 5th NEW self-help system on the way out the door.But my joys are moments of love and happiness sprinkled through most of my days. Between meltdowns and burnouts. This guide covers the readings appointed in the Revised Common Lectionary for the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 10), Year A, falling on July 12, 2026.The Gospel turns a new corner this morning. For six Sundays we have been reading through Jesus' words to his disciples — the sending discourse of Matthew 10 and the closing invitation of Matthew 11. Today we move from instruction to story.Matthew 13 opens what is sometimes called the parables chapter, where Jesus shifts into the long, slow, indirect work of telling stories about the kingdom of heaven. The Parable of the Sower is the first of these stories — and, fittingly, it is a story about how words like these actually land.The Matthew sending discourse is complete. The next several weeks will move through parables — the sower, the wheat and tares, the mustard seed, the pearl, the net. The shape of Jesus' teaching shifts from imperative to image, and the shape of our preaching may shift with it.The Old Testament tracks both lead naturally toward the Gospel, in different ways. * Track One brings us deeper into Genesis with the family of Jacob and Esau — twins struggling in the womb, parents picking favorites, a birthright traded for a bowl of stew. * Track Two brings us Isaiah's beautiful image of rain and snow that do not return to the heavens without watering the earth, paired with Psalm 65's celebration of God's lavish care for the soil. * The Epistle moves into Romans 8 — one of the high points of the New Testament — opening with the famous declaration: there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.The ReadingsGenesis 25:19–34First Reading (Track One) — Jacob and EsauSummaryTwo movements in one passage. * In the first, after years of barrenness, Rebekah conceives twins. They struggle so violently in her womb that she goes to inquire of the Lord, who tells her two nations are inside her — two peoples destined to be divided, with the elder serving the younger. The twins are born: Esau first, ruddy and hairy; then Jacob, with his hand grasping Esau's heel. * The second movement skips ahead to their adulthood. Esau is a skilled hunter, his father's favorite. Jacob is quieter, more domestic, his mother's favorite. One day Esau comes in from the field famished. Jacob is making stew. Esau demands some, and Jacob makes him swear to sell his birthright first. Esau swears, eats, and goes on his way. The narrator's verdict is blunt: thus Esau despised his birthright.Key Ideas for Preaching* The struggle inside Rebekah's womb is named long before the brothers can do anything to cause it. The text suggests that some of what shapes our lives starts before we have any agency in it. How might your congregation hear this without flattening it into determinism — recognizing the conditions we did not choose, while still taking seriously the choices we now make inside them?* The oracle that “the elder shall serve the younger” reverses the standard social order. God's choosing does not follow the rules of human inheritance. Where does your congregation still quietly assume that God's blessing tracks with rank, age, status, or success — and how might this reversal interrupt that?* Esau trades his birthright for a single meal. He gets what he wants in the moment and loses what would have been his future. Where in your congregation has the urgency of the immediate crowded out what people will later wish they had kept?* The parents pick favorites. Isaac loves Esau; Rebekah loves Jacob. Genesis does not pretend that this family is healthy. What might it mean to read these stories with both reverence for what God is doing and clear eyes about what is going wrong?Significant Cautions* Do not make Jacob the hero or Esau the villain. The text is more honest than that. Jacob is a calculating manipulator; Esau is impulsive and short-sighted. Both will need grace.* “The elder shall serve the younger” has been used in some traditions to claim that Christianity has replaced an older covenant. That is a misuse. The text is about this specific family, not a doctrinal program.* Esau's loss of his birthright has sometimes been preached as a warning about losing your salvation through carelessness. That is more than the text says. It is a moral judgment about despising what was given, not a soteriological warning.* Parental favoritism is destructive. Do not preach this story in a way that normalizes it or treats it as a charming family quirk.Psalm 119:105–112The Psalm (Track One) — A Lamp to My FeetSummaryA short section of the longest psalm in the Bible. Each stanza of Psalm 119 begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and each stanza is a meditation on God's word and law. This section opens with one of the most famous lines in the psalms: “your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The psalmist commits to obey God's righteous ordinances. He acknowledges that his life is constantly in danger — “I hold my life in my hand continually” — but does not forget the law. The wicked have laid snares, but he has not strayed. He has taken God's decrees as an inheritance forever.Key Ideas for Preaching* A lamp is a small, focused light — enough to take the next step, not enough to see all the way down the road. What does it mean for your congregation to have a faith that gives them light enough for the next step rather than visibility of the whole journey?* The psalmist names that his life is “continually in his hand” — meaning, in continual peril. The psalm does not pretend that following God spares us from difficulty. What does it look like for your people to keep walking faithfully in a season when nothing feels safe?* The psalmist takes God's decrees as an inheritance “forever.” This is the same language Jacob and Esau will fight over in today's Genesis. How might your sermon set these two inheritances side by side — what we receive from God, and what we trade away?Significant Cautions* The piety of Psalm 119 can sound boastful out of context. Read in full, the psalm is more a series of vows and longings than self-congratulation. Be careful not to use a line from it to humble-brag from the pulpit.* “Your word” should not be flattened into “the Bible says” in a way that closes down honest inquiry. The psalmist's relationship to God's word is a long love affair, not a system of proof-texts.Isaiah 55:10–13First Reading (Track Two) — As the Rain Comes DownSummaryThe closing of Isaiah's great chapter of invitation. The verses for today open with one of the most beautiful images in the prophets: as the rain and snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the earth…. The chapter closes with extravagant joy: you shall go out in joy and be led back in peace; the mountains and hills shall burst into song; all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Where the thornbush stood, the cypress will grow; where the brier was, the myrtle.Key Ideas for Preaching* The image is one of the most natural and concrete in the prophets: rain comes down, waters the earth, makes things grow. The word of God works the same way, the text says — patiently, naturally, without immediate visible effect, accomplishing what it sets out to do. What does it look like for your congregation to trust God's word the way they trust rain to do its work?* The closing image of mountains singing and trees clapping is one of the most joyful pictures of God's restoration in the prophets. The whole creation joins the celebration. How might your sermon let your congregation feel the size of the joy the prophets imagined — not just our private gladness, but a joy that mountains and trees join?* Where the thornbush stood, the cypress will grow. The text imagines not just restoration but improvement — what was harsh giving way to what is beautiful. Where in your congregation's life or your community's life has thornbush been growing for too long, and what would it look like to keep hoping for cypress?Significant Cautions* “God's word will not return empty” has been used as a triumphalist confidence — as if any sermon, or any evangelistic effort, is guaranteed success. The text is about God's faithfulness, not our methods. Be careful with this verse.* The closing imagery is poetic and visionary. Do not turn it into a literal prediction of what is about to happen. Isaiah is helping his people imagine; let your people imagine, too.Psalm 65:(1–8), 9–13The Psalm (Track Two) — You Visit the EarthSummaryA psalm of thanksgiving for God's provision through the natural world. The opening verses (which the lectionary makes optional) celebrate God's awesome works — silencing the roaring of the seas and the tumult of the peoples. The main section then turns to the soil itself. God visits the earth and waters it. God provides grain. God softens the ridges and blesses the growth. The wagons of God overflow with abundance. The pastures of the wilderness drip with goodness; the hills gird themselves with joy; the meadows are covered with flocks; the valleys are decked with grain. They shout and sing together for joy.Key Ideas for Preaching* The psalm imagines God as a farmer working the land — visiting, watering, softening, blessing. This is a wonderfully embodied picture of God's care for the world. Where in your congregation has the picture of God become too abstract, and how might this earthy image steady it?* The earth itself is described as joyful. The hills gird themselves with joy. The meadows shout. The valleys sing. The praise of God in this psalm is not just human; it is cosmic. How might your sermon include the praise of the creation as part of the worship of your people?* The psalm pairs naturally with Isaiah and with the Parable of the Sower. The whole day is, in a sense, about good soil — about what makes things grow, about the patience of fields and the joy of harvest. What does it mean for your people to take their place inside that picture?Significant Cautions* The agricultural imagery can fall flat in urban congregations or for those without much connection to growing things. Take a moment to translate where needed — to help people who have not held soil feel what the psalm is celebrating.* If you use the optional opening verses, do not let their language about God forgiving transgressions become a transactional reading. These are people overflowing with thanks, not making a payment.Romans 8:1–11The Epistle — No CondemnationSummaryAfter the long, painful description of the inner war in Romans 7, Paul opens chapter 8 with one of the great thunderclaps of the New Testament: there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set us free from the law of sin and death. What the law could not do, God did by sending the Son. The selected verses describe two different orientations of life: * the mind set on the flesh, which is hostile to God, and * the mind set on the Spirit, which is life and peace.The passage closes with the promise that if the Spirit of God dwells in you — and Paul insists it does — then God who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies as well.Key Ideas for Preaching* “There is therefore now no condemnation.” That is the gospel in seven words. After the heaviness of Romans 7, Paul does not say there is now some condemnation, or only a little, or condemnation managed by your performance. He says no condemnation. Where in your congregation are people still walking around as if some part of them were under condemnation, and what would change if they took Paul at his word?* Paul describes two different mindsets — flesh and Spirit. He is not talking about the body. He is talking about whether we live oriented around our own self-defended life or around the life of God breathed into us. How might your sermon help your people tell the difference in their own daily lives?* The closing verse is one of the most physically hopeful in the New Testament: God will give life even to our mortal bodies. The Christian hope is not escape from the body but its raising. What might it shift in your congregation to hear that the resurrection includes the body, not just the spirit?Significant Cautions* “Flesh” language in Paul has often been used to denigrate the physical body and bodily life. That is not what Paul means. Flesh in Paul is closer to the self-organized-against-God, not the body. Say so clearly.* “No condemnation” should not be flattened into “anything goes.” Paul is naming what is true about your standing before God, not endorsing every choice you might make.* The “if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ” line has been used to test other people's salvation. Paul's whole flow of thought is reassurance, not threat. Keep the assurance in the foreground.* The Spirit language has sometimes been used in ways that exclude people who do not have particular emotional or charismatic experiences. The Spirit's work is wider than what feels like the Spirit at any given moment.Matthew 13:1–9, 18–23The Gospel — The Parable of the SowerSummaryThe crowds press in on Jesus, and he gets into a boat to teach them from offshore. He tells the story of a sower who goes out to sow. Some seed falls on the path and is eaten by birds. Some falls on rocky ground, springs up quickly, and withers without root. Some falls among thorns and is choked. Some falls on good soil and yields a remarkable harvest — thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was planted. Let anyone with ears listen. The lectionary skips the section in which the disciples ask Jesus why he speaks in parables, and goes directly to his interpretation. Each soil represents a kind of reception. The path is the one who hears without understanding; the seed is snatched away. The rocky ground is the one who receives joyfully but, having no root, falls away under pressure. The thorns are the one whose hearing is choked by the cares of the world and the lure of wealth. The good soil is the one who hears, understands, and bears extravagant fruit.Key Ideas for Preaching* The sower in the parable scatters seed everywhere — on path and rocks and thorns and good soil alike. He does not check the ground first. This is one of the most striking pictures of God's lavishness in any parable. Where in your congregation has there been a quiet calculation about who is worth speaking the word to, and how might this image interrupt it?* The four soils are types of hearing, not types of people. Anyone might find themselves in any of the four conditions, depending on the season of their life. Where in your congregation are people in danger of being preached at as “the rocky ground” or “the thorns,” when in fact they are people whose conditions have changed and could change again?* The yield from good soil is extravagant. Thirty, sixty, or a hundred times what was planted is wildly more than ancient agriculture typically produced. The parable is not just about which soil is best; it is about the surprising abundance of what even one good response can produce. What does it look like to preach hope about what one faithful hearing can yield over time?* Jesus' interpretation calls out “the cares of the world and the lure of wealth” as a particular kind of choking thorn. He is not condemning attention to daily life; he is naming what happens when those concerns become the whole horizon. Where in your congregation's life has the daily slowly become the whole, and how might today's parable invite a recalibration?* The parable is the first in a long string of parables in Matthew 13. It is, in a sense, a parable about parables — about how images and stories actually land in people. What does it mean to preach a sermon that takes seriously how it itself will be heard?Significant Cautions* The four soils are easy to use diagnostically — “which soil are you?” — in a way that produces anxiety. Be careful with this. The parable is not a personality test, and the soils are conditions that change with the seasons of a life.* The parable has been used to blame failure to flourish on the hearer rather than on the conditions. Some hearts are stony because life has been stony to them. Be gentle.* “The cares of the world and the lure of wealth” can quickly become a preacher's broadside, especially against people in financial stress. Jesus' point is about what choosing to be absorbed by these does to a soul, not a condemnation of anyone living with real economic pressure.* The “evil one snatches” language has been sensationalized in some preaching traditions. Keep it where Jesus keeps it — as part of an explanation, not as a dramatic centerpiece.Thematic ConnectionsThe Gospel is the natural center for the day, and it is the first of a series of parables that will fill the next few weeks. Matthew is asking us to slow down, to listen to stories, to receive the kingdom of heaven through images rather than instructions.On Track One, Genesis gives us a family in which inheritance is despised and grasped — Esau trading his birthright for a meal, Jacob calculating his way into a position God had already promised him. The Psalm names God's word as a lamp to the feet — a small, faithful light. Read alongside the Gospel, the Genesis story poses the question of what we do with what is given us. Esau let his birthright go for a stew. The path, the rocks, and the thorns let the word go for similar reasons. The good soil holds what has been received and lets it become a harvest.On Track Two, Isaiah and Psalm 65 both celebrate the natural processes through which God's purpose works. Rain comes down. The earth softens. Seeds grow. The whole creation eventually joins the praise. The pairing with the Parable of the Sower is beautiful: the patient, ordinary, often invisible work by which the word of God accomplishes what it sets out to do. The harvest is real, even when we cannot see the seed underground.Romans 8 sits inside the day as a steady ground. There is no condemnation. The Spirit of God is at work in those who belong to Christ. The various soils of the Gospel, the family dysfunction of Genesis, the slow growing of Isaiah — none of these has the final word. The final word belongs to the Spirit who gives life even to our mortal bodies.The parables of the kingdom (chapter 13) begin here. The shape of Jesus' teaching shifts from imperative to image, and the shape of our preaching may shift with it. The Parable of the Sower is a particularly fitting place to start, because it is a story about how stories like these actually land. (17:30) This raises an important question: What are we giving up for convenience? Critical thinking skills are being diminished. Writing by hand activates the brain's neural pathways; in contrast, AI encourages a more passive state of the brain. Dr. Strohman researched the Columbine tragedy in 1999. (34:00) Concerning trends show signs of increased narcissism, reduced empathy, and lower levels of oxytocin (a key bonding chemical). (36:00) As a result, many kids raised on tech and social media place less value on other humans, and certain apps make this worse. News spreads instantly, and memories of current events fade quickly as the next story replaces them. (47:00) Negative interactions are increasing; let's refocus on teaching how to be good humans. Society leans heavily on tech because it's easy; however, that's not necessarily a good thing. (1:05:00) Remaining Vigilant Safety settings on social media and other platforms are largely an illusion. (1:08:00) Dr. Strohman's team participated in a product liability case against Meta, involving the grooming of minors. (1:10:00) Pornography changes the brain in a harmful way. Another key point is that ads are deliberately targeted at children as young as 8, unless parents are extremely vigilant about filtering. Other high-profile violent cases are discussed. It's Tuesday, June 30th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson and Timothy Reed China to add 435 ships to Navy by 2030 China's control of the high seas is on the rise.  Global Times reports that China's shipbuilding industry produced 16 million tons of ships last year — an increase of 46% year over year.  China is handling 57% of the global shipbuilding annually. By contrast, the United States retains around 0.04% of the global shipbuilding capacity at present.  Currently, China is producing the equivalent dead weight in ships of 160 aircraft carriers per year. China's military plan is to add 435 ships to their naval capacity by 2030 in addition to their current fleet of 395 ships. United States Naval Institute News has reported that America has 291 battle force ships in operation -- exactly the number it had in 2004.  The Pentagon has revealed that China has targeted a fleet of nine aircraft carriers in nine years from now to compete with the 11 carrier fleet of the United States. China's GDP is 7.3% vs, America's GDP of 2.2% In God's providence, China has improved its Gross Domestic Product by 7.3% per year over the last 20 years.  By contract, the United States has averaged a GDP improvement of just 2.2% per year over the same timeframe. This year, the International Monetary Fund is forecasting a 4.4% Gross Domestic Product bump for China and a 2.3% bump for the United States. China builds 3 million drones and increases nuclear warheads by 77% China's drone production is approaching three million per year now. By contrast, the U.S. military is producing 120,000 drones per year, with a plan to increase to about 1 million per year in the next year or two. China's nuclear warhead buildup continues as well -- now at 620 warheads which is up from 350 in 2020. That's a 77% increase which would put the nation with 1,100 nuclear warheads in five years. The United States and Russia have each deployed 1,770 nuclear warheads. Job 12:9 and 23 asks the question: “Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?  ... He makes nations great, and destroys them; He enlarges nations, and guides them.” White House affirms parents, opposes Johnson Amendment The White House Religious Liberty Commission issued its final report over the weekend. The report noted that “parents bear primary responsibility for the formation of their children. … This principle is deeply rooted in American law, tradition, and constitutional understanding. However, witnesses testified that government actors have frequently infringed upon the fundamental rights of parents to raise their children in accordance with their beliefs. Parental rights deserve greater clarity and stronger protection.” The report also recommended “federal legislation repealing the Johnson Amendment.” The commission called this ”an unconstitutional restriction on the religious speech of houses of worship and faith-based non-profits.”  The commission was particularly concerned about “physicians, nurses, pharmacists, administrators, patients, and religious healthcare providers regarding conscience conflicts involving abortion, sterilization, assisted suicide, gender-related interventions, vaccine mandates.” Trump: Democrat Party is embracing Communism Last Friday, President Donald Trump spoke on religious liberty to the Faith and Freedom Coalition. He warned that the Democrat Party is turning towards communism. Listen TRUMP:  “I looked at some of the people that got elected the other night in New York. These are people that want to destroy our country. They hate our country. They hate our people. They hate the Democrat Party. “The Democrat Party is in big trouble. This isn't stopping with New York. These are not social 'Dumocrats.' These are hardcore, godless communists. They don't believe in God. This is the most serious threat to our country since its existence, in my opinion.” Homosexual pride marches in San Fran, New York City, and Ukraine Pride comes before a fall. And the month of June featured more pride events around the world. Indeed, 56,000 people participated in San Francisco's homosexual pride march over the weekend, and news reports indicate more than a million showed up on Sunday for New York City's event. Plus, 5,000 people showed up at last week's homosexual pride march in Kiev, Ukraine. That's the largest turnout since the start of the war. Ukraine has been celebrating homosexuality with these events since 2013.   Meanwhile, since June 2012, Moscow banned all homosexual pride events for a hundred years. The largest homosexual pride event in Asia occurs in Taipei, Taiwan each year — attracting some 150,000 people.  And the Chinese government shut down Shanghai homosexual pride marches in 2020.  How sexual perversion is affirmed in corporate America Here In the United States, the pro-homosexual Human Rights Campaign lost 65% of its Fortune 500 company participants in its Corporate Equality Index for 2026. Companies like Target, Amazon, Walmart, and Verizon agreed to forego all external benchmarking. However, the companies continue to provide the same level of benefits to their homosexual employees. Specifically, 93% offer gender-identity non-discrimination policies. That's about the same as the last two years. Marriage in decline Marriage is on the decline in America. Today, only 46% of adults are married, down from 72% in 1960. Incredibly, 29% of older adults have never married. That's up from 7% in 1960.  This may be a first in human history. Hebrews 13:4 declares this: “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” Oregon withdraws $90,000 fine against counselor who didn't affirm perversion And finally, Frank Canepa, a Catholic counselor from Oregon, won a legal victory after being persecuted for his Judeo-Christian beliefs, reports the Daily Citizen. Canepa was fined almost $90,000 for not affirming sexual perversion. One of his clients, whom he had been helping professionally for two and a half years, brought up homosexual relationships 44 times and finally demanded that he personally bless her homosexual relationship which he refused to do. Sadly, the state of Oregon seeks to prohibit people of faith from sharing their convictions with those who are homosexual.  But Jonathan Scruggs of Alliance Defending Freedom stated, “The government can't target counselors for their views and force people to say things that go against their core convictions.”  Thankfully, Oregon was forced to withdraw the outrageous fine.
