Disturb us, O Lord, when with the abundance of things possessed, we lose our thirst for the Water of Life; When, having fallen in love with time, we have ceased to dream of Eternity; And our efforts to build a new earth have allowed Your vision for a new heaven to grow dim. "Christmas Bells" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I heard the bells on Christmas DayTheir old, familiar carols play,    And wild and sweet    The words repeatOf peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come,The belfries of all Christendom    Had rolled along    The unbroken songOf peace on earth, good-will to men! Till ringing, singing on its way,The world revolved from night to day,    A voice, a chime,    A chant sublimeOf peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouthThe cannon thundered in the South,    And with the sound    The carols drownedOf peace on earth, good-will to men! It was as if an earthquake rentThe hearth-stones of a continent,    And made forlorn    The households bornOf peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head;"There is no peace on earth," I said;    "For hate is strong,    And mocks the songOf peace on earth, good-will to men!" Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;    The Wrong shall fail,    The Right prevail,With peace on earth, good-will to men." For still there are so many things that I have never seen:in every wood in every spring there is a different green.I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago,and people who will see a world that I shall never know. But all the while I sit and think of times there were before,I listen for returning feet and voices at the door. A swirlIn the hollows like the twinkling feetOf a fairy waltzer; the colors runTo the westward sun,Through the deeps of the ripening wheat. I hear the reapers' far-off hum,So faint and far it seems the droneOf bee or beetle, seems to comeFrom far-off, fragrant, fruity zone,A land of plenty, whereToward the sun, as hasting there,The colors runBefore the wind's feetIn the wheat. The wild hawk swoopsTo his prey in the deeps; The sunflower droopsTo the lazy wave; the wind sleeps; Then, moving in dazzling links and loops,A marvel of shadow and shine,A glory of olive and amber and wine,Runs the color in the wheat. It should be quietwhen one eats an egg. No political hoodlumsknocking down doors, no lieutenants who areticked off at their scheming girlfriends andtake it out on you, no dictatorsposing as tribunes. It should be quiet, so quiet you can hearthe chicken, a creature usually mocked as a typeof fool, a cluck chained to the chore of her body.Listen, she is there, pecking at a bit of grainthat came from nowhere. "A Tragic Story" by William Makepeace Thackeray There lived a sage in days of yore,And he a handsome pigtail wore; But wondered much and sorrowed more,Because it hung behind him. He mused upon this curious case,And swore he'd change the pigtail's place,And have it hanging at his face,Not dangling there behind him. Says he, "The mystery I've found -Says he, "The mystery I've found!I'll turn me round," - he turned him round; But still it hung behind him. Then round and round, and out and in,All day the puzzled sage did spin;In vain - it mattered not a pin -The pigtail hung behind him. And right and left and round about,And up and down and in and outHe turned; but still the pigtail stoutHung steadily behind him. And though his efforts never slack,And though he twist and twirl, and tack,Alas! Still faithful to his back,The pigtail hangs behind him. "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by William Wordsworth I wandered lonely as a cloudThat floats on high o'er vales and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daffodils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shineAnd twinkle on the milky way,They stretched in never-ending lineAlong the margin of a bay:Ten thousand saw I at a glance,Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but theyOut-did the sparkling waves in glee:A poet could not but be gay,In such a jocund company:I gazed—and gazed—but little thoughtWhat wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lieIn vacant or in pensive mood,They flash upon that inward eyeWhich is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills,And dances with the daffodils. "You're still in my luncheon,"Was all that she answered. "Get out of it!" And the Moral is this: Be it madam or missTo whom you have something to say,You are only absurd when you get in the curdBut you're rude when you get in the whey. Today we have TWO pickled poems! Did you know that sometimes poems talk to each other?   Our first poem is "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost   Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;   Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,   And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.   I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.     The second poem is “Two Roads” by Chris Harris   Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by... Since then I've been completely lost. Thanks for nothing, Robert Frost!   Hi, I'm Grace, and this is the Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Poems Podcast. It's a poetry podcast by a kid, for kids.
