The First Woman Rabbi Had a Tragic Life
I have a special in-house interview today with 2 men currently on a mission across Canada sharing the truth about a story of a family and their plight to help those suffering with mental illness and about the nightmare this family had to endure for years.Todd Michael Harris and David Stephan are on tour promoting the film 'Epiphany' and David's harrowing journey. The interview delves deeply into David's family's struggles with mental health, their pioneering work in nutritional supplements, and an intense legal battle with the Canadian health system. They discuss the transformative power of their line supplements, aptly named True Hope, the dynamics behind David's wrongful conviction, the death of his son Ezekiel, and how media and health authorities continue to misrepresent their story despite clear proof otherwise. This is a story of resilience and highlights the corruption among organizations we look to for justice, truth and support. Instead of finding any of these things, the Stephans were met with corruption at every step that started over 20 years ago. Please go to Matadorfilms.ca to see if this film and discussion is coming to your city in the next few weeks. This is a story that needs to be told, heard and shared.01:00 Introducing Today's Special Guests: Todd Michael Harris and David Stephan01:29 The Tragic Story of David Stephan's Family03:48 Todd's Journey in Filmmaking06:03 David's Family History and Struggles with Mental Health15:13 The Birth of True Hope and Nutritional Discoveries28:56 The Impact of Health Canada and Legal Battles34:13 The Fight for Truth and Justice37:51 The Power of Justice and Identity38:26 Reaching Beyond the Choir38:41 Challenges in Spreading the Truth39:01 Audience Reactions and Support41:25 The Birth of True Hope Empire Plus43:23 Health Canada's Contradictions44:13 Justice and Truth: An Interdependent Relationship45:22 Media's Role in Shaping Public Perception47:40 Medical Misadventures and Systemic Issues49:47 The Fight for Natural Health Products50:56 Legal Battles and Personal Struggles52:25 The Aftermath and Seeking Justice56:05 Systemic Corruption and Cover-Ups01:04:44 Exposing the Truth and Seeking Accountability01:07:25 Personal Connections and Accountability01:07:55 The Illusion of Trust in Systems01:08:48 Facing Challenges and Integrity01:09:25 The Plea Bargain Dilemma01:11:40 Tour Goals and Media Coverage01:17:43 Nutritional Products and Their Benefits01:25:05 Protocols and Health Canada Restrictions01:30:33 Final Thoughts and Call to ActionPlease share this interview, the world needs to know the truth about the nightmare this family has experienced at the hands of authorities that people wrongfully trust. If you enjoyed this episode, please share and consider going to www.sovereigncollective.org/shop to check out my offerings and get a deal while supporting the podcast. Hana and her adoptive brother, Immanuel, were brought from Ethiopia into what was supposed to be a loving home, but they instead found themselves in an abusive environment of isolation, starvation, and cruel punishment. Perhaps the warning signs were too subtle, because no interventions came in time to prevent the unimaginable tragedy that unfolded in May 2011. Far too often abuse is only exposed in hindsight. Larry and Carri Williams appeared to be a kind, wholesome couple devoted to raising their family in Sedro-Woolley, Washington. But behind closed doors, their strict fundamentalist Christian beliefs and harsh parenting practices would lead to a horrifying case of abuse, ultimately resulting in Hana's tragic death. In this episode, we examine the rise of the homeschooling movement particularly in fundamentalist Christian homes, the influence of controversial child-rearing books like To Train Up a Child, as well as some of the troubling adoption practices that led us here. Hana's death laid bare the dangers of abusive parenting ideologies and the failures in adoption oversight. She endured years of mistreatment before her body sadly succumbed to the persistent abuse that she had already endured for years at the Williams family's rural home. What red flags were ignored along the way? Last Take: The Tragic Story of Halyna Hutchins and the Rust Shooting A tragic accident on the set of "Rust" took Halyna Hutchins' life, and the new Hulu documentary "Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna" examines the failures that led to that moment. Directed by her friend Rachel Mason, the film attempts to honor Hutchins while also dissecting the catastrophic failures that led to her death. Halyna Hutchins was more than just a talented cinematographer. She was a mother, a wife, and an artist dedicated to her craft. And she loved working on "Rust." That's a painful truth that echoes throughout the documentary, revealed through her personal notes, messages, and behind-the-scenes footage. This wasn't just another job for her. She was fully invested. Then, in a single moment, everything changed. October 21, 2021. A routine rehearsal inside a small wooden church on the set of "Rust" in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Alec Baldwin, both the film's star and one of its producers, was handed a Colt .45 revolver. It was supposed to be a "cold gun"—an industry term for a firearm containing no live rounds. But when Baldwin pointed it toward the camera during the scene and pulled the trigger, a live bullet was discharged. The shot struck Halyna Hutchins in the chest and injured director Joel Souza, who was standing behind her. She was rushed to the hospital but didn't survive. The immediate aftermath was chaos. Authorities swarmed the set. Baldwin, visibly distraught, was questioned by investigators, struggling to comprehend how this could have happened. The film crew had already been in turmoil—complaints about unsafe working conditions, crew members walking off set in protest just days before. The warning signs were there, but no one stopped production. The documentary includes footage of Baldwin being informed that Hutchins had died. His reaction—shock, disbelief, horror—mirrors what most people felt when they first heard the news. A movie set, a place where safety should be an absolute priority, had turned into a crime scene. As the investigation unfolded, it became clear that corners had been cut. The film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was responsible for handling weapons on set, but she was young and relatively inexperienced. Reports surfaced that crew members had been using the prop guns for live target practice—a staggering breach of safety protocols. The question became: who was ultimately responsible? Baldwin, as an actor, claimed he was simply following directions. As a producer, could he have done more to ensure a safer set? And then there's Gutierrez Reed—should she have caught the live round before it ever made its way onto set? What about assistant director Dave Halls, who reportedly handed Baldwin the gun and declared it "cold"? The documentary doesn't shy away from these tough questions, but its focus isn't just the legal blame game. It's about the systemic failures that made this possible in the first place. Hutchins' widower, Matt Hutchins, served as an executive producer on the film, ensuring that her story remained at the center of it all. He initially pursued a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and the "Rust" production team, which was eventually settled. But legal battles continue—Gutierrez Reed faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, and Baldwin himself was charged, then had those charges dropped, only for them to be reconsidered later. The bigger issue? This wasn't the first time safety has been compromised on a movie set, and unless serious changes happen, it won't be the last. The film industry has long relied on outdated practices, assuming accidents are rare enough to justify pushing boundaries. But the truth is, workplace safety shouldn't be an afterthought, whether it's in a factory, a construction site, or a Hollywood set. And when people raise red flags—like crew members did on "Rust"—they need to be taken seriously before tragedy strikes. During a panel discussion about "Last Take," director Joel Souza, who was also injured in the shooting, admitted that he wished the documentary focused more on Halyna's life rather than just the circumstances of her death. And he's not wrong. The documentary was originally intended to be a tribute, but as Mason put it, the commercial value of the "Rust" tragedy became an undeniable part of the story. That's the harsh reality of true crime and high-profile incidents—what starts as a personal loss often turns into a public spectacle. Baldwin, meanwhile, has returned to work and even launched a reality show with his family, a move that has drawn criticism. His involvement in "Rust" continues, as the film has resumed production, now with Hutchins' widower as an executive producer. That decision alone raises ethical questions—how do you finish a movie tied to such a devastating loss? And is there a right way to do it? Mason hopes the documentary serves a greater purpose beyond recounting the tragedy. She wants it to spark conversations about on-set safety, not just in Hollywood, but in workplaces everywhere. Because at the end of the day, this wasn't just an accident. It was a preventable failure at every level. And Halyna Hutchins should still be here. #RustTragedy #HalynaHutchins #AlecBaldwin #OnSetSafety Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In the remote outback of Victoria in 1993, Ralph Vollmer believed his wife, Joan, was possessed. Ralph enlisted members of his local religious community to perform an exorcism, hoping to rid Joan of the ten demons they believed controlled her. What followed was a horrific four-day ordeal that ended in Joan’s death. Margaret Thanos is the director of Furious Mattress, a play based on Joan Vollmer’s tragic story. PART TWO In 1993, Jennifer Ertman (14) and Elizabeth Pena (16), were rushing home trying to meet curfew. What should have been an ordinary evening for the teens quickly took a devastating turn when they encountered a group of drunk teenage boys who called themselves the “Black and White” gang. The story of Jennifer and Elizabeth became a symbol of the need for greater awareness and action against gang activity. During the subsequent trial, victim impact statements were introduced for the first time in the state of Texas, allowing the families of Jennifer and Elizabeth to directly address the court and express the emotional toll the crime had taken on their lives. These statements gave a powerful, personal voice to the victims' families, highlighting the profound loss and the lasting impact of violence on loved ones. Isaiah tells a tale of Moab's distress and their cry for assistance from Judah. In this story we learn of the Lord's compassion for sinners, of His requirement for salvation and of the blinding nature of pride.
In 1993, Jennifer Ertman (14) and Elizabeth Pena (16), were rushing home trying to meet curfew. The case not only led to convictions but also marked a turning point in how the justice system handled the voices of victims' families, offering a way for them to seek closure and ensure their pain was acknowledged. This case will leave you wondering: How can such evil even exist in the world? Episode 346: In this episode, we look into the life and mysterious murder of Annie Mae Pictou Aquash, a prominent Indigenous activist whose story continues to haunt the corridors of justice and activism alike. During the tumultuous 1970s, her journey took her from Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, to the heart of the American Indian Movement (AIM) in the United States, where she fought for Indigenous rights. The mystery surrounding Annie Mae's death is as compelling as her life. In December 1975, she disappeared and was later found deceased on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Initial reports misleadingly attributed her death to exposure, but a second autopsy revealed she had been executed with a bullet to the back of her head. This revelation raised questions about who could have orchestrated such a brutal act against someone so profoundly committed to her cause. It took almost 30 years before the shocking truth was uncovered and the people responsible for Annie's murder were brought to justice. Psychologist Rolio May said, “Hate is not the opposite of love. Apathy is.” Over the course of the last three episodes, we've discussed how apathy paved the way for a horrific criminal to wreak havoc on the women of Vancouver. Willie Pickton was only allowed to continue his crimes, to rack up the number of bodies he did, because the government and the police didn't do their jobs, were apathetic to the cries for help coming from the downtown eastside. Today, we have finally reached the conclusion to this chilling story. Justice will finally be served, but just a little too late for too many women. Once an avalanche starts, there's nothing that can be done to stop it. You can prevent them, you can prepare for them, but by the time you start to hear the ice cracking, it's almost always too late. The case of Willie Pickton feels a little bit like an avalanche. For the past two episodes, the people in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside have been hearing ominous creaks, trying hard to determine what the cause is. Unfortunately for dozens of women, help wouldn't come in time. When we last left off, Willie Pickton was just starting his reign of terror over the women of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Nancy Clark was missing, along with several other women, whose disappearances would never be solved. The Pickton farm was quickly becoming a criminal headquarters, thanks to Dave Pickton's infatuation with the Hell's Angels gang. The Vancouver Police didn't care. The missing women were sex workers and addicts, and therefore, less worthy of effort. The horror of this story is not only the monstrous actions of Willie Pickton, but also the apathy of the same people that were supposed to protect and serve. In his book, Encyclopedia of Murder and Violent Crime, Eric Hickey wrote about a type of victim that he called, “the Less Dead”. These are people that are seen by the media or law enforcement as having less value than others. Usually sex workers, drug addicts, houseless people, and sexual or racial minorities. The case we're discussing today is about dozens of these types of victims. Women whose disappearances were ignored or were straight up covered up because they happened to be addicts or sex workers. One police officer told a woman's terrified family that the series of missing women were “just junkies and hookers. Don't waste our time.” These were human beings. With friends and families, hopes, dreams, stories, lives. The fact that the authorities ignored their disappearances for so long is one of the worst miscarriages of justice that we've seen in our decades of true crime study. This killer roamed the streets of Vancouver, like a shark swimming among a school of fish, unchecked and under the radar, taking almost 50 lives before anyone stopped him. Sources:Cameron, Stevie. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey made millions, publishing cutting-edge journalism in alternative weekly newspapers across the country. Larkin and Lacey were considered champions of the First Amendment, and their brand of journalism won thousands of awards, including a Pulitzer Prize. But the duo also created Backpage.com, a website that was known for its adult section, and according to federal prosecutors – prostitution. In this episode, Morgan Loew interviews Stephen Lemons, an investigative reporter who worked for Lacey and Larkin for two decades. Lemons details Lacey and Larkins' rise from college paper publishers, to newspaper moguls, to Backpage, to Larkins' death by suicide, and Lacey's conviction in federal court.
