The Embarrassing Episode of Little Miss Muffet by Guy Wetmore Carryl Little Miss Muffet discovered a tuffet,(Which never occurred to the rest of us)And, as 'twas a June day, and just about noonday,She wanted to eat—like the rest of us:Her diet was whey, and I hasten to sayIt is wholesome and people grow fat on it.The spot being lonely, the lady not onlyDiscovered the tuffet, but sat on it. A rivulet gabbled beside her and babbled,As rivulets always are thought to do,And dragon flies sported around and cavorted,As poets say dragon flies ought to do;When, glancing aside for a moment, she spiedA horrible sight that brought fear to her,A hideous spider was sitting beside her,And most unavoidably near to her! Albeit unsightly, this creature politely Said:"Madam, I earnestly vow to you,I'm penitent that I did not bring my hat.I Should otherwise certainly bow to you."Thought anxious to please, he was so ill at easeThat he lost all his sense of propriety,And grew so inept that he clumsily steptIn her plate—which is barred in Society. This curious error completed her terror; She shuddered, and growing much paler, notOnly left tuffet, but dealt him a buffetWhich doubled him up in a sailor knot.It should be explained that at this he was pained:He cried: "I have vexed you, no doubt of it!Your fists's like a truncheon." "You're still in my luncheon,"Was all that she answered. "Get out of it!" And the Moral is this: Be it madam or missTo whom you have something to say,You are only absurd when you get in the curdBut you're rude when you get in the whey. Nostalgia, as they say, is one hell of a drug. This week on the show I'm revisiting a game I covered A LONG time ago, in fact this topic was originally covered in the 2nd episode ever of the podcast! But that episode, along with 5 or 6 others, is hidden away over on soundcloud; so I figured it was about damn time I cover it again. This week I am talking about one of my favorite childhood games, an obscure Mac game called Power Pete (later renamed to Mighty Mike). Joining me to help me break down this favorite of mine is Phil Salvador. Phil is the Library Director at the Video Game History Foundation and he also runs the website The Obscuritory, which is a blog about less known games and software. Phil and I talk about the highs and lows of the game, everything from the joy of exploding cakes to the horror of Little Miss Muffet. Historical mothers did not have a lot of pink and purple merchandise for their baby girls, but they did have words. Lullabies, nursery rhymes, and fairy tales are probably as old as humanity, but they mostly didn't get written down until the 17th to 19th century. This episode ranges from the one (and sadly only one) ancient Roman lullaby we know, to the origins of Little Miss Muffet and her Mother Goose compatriots, to the origins of Disney's favorite princesses like Snow White, Cinderella, and the princess and the frog. I talk about feminist criticism of all of that, but also why the feminist critiques may not be quite on point for what girls of the past actually heard. Her poems, stories, and essays have appeared widely in publications including The Sun, Ploughshares, The Hudson Review and The New York Times. In Just Another Jack: The Private Lives of Nursery Rhymes, poet and novelist Michele Herman explores a variety of timeless human predicaments - adolescent lust, overprotective parents, dementia, gender confusion and more - by imagining her way into the actual lives of eight familiar nursery-rhyme characters. Many authors have taken fictional or mythological characters and brought them into our contemporary world, but these eight story-poems accomplish something more unusual by roaming around in Mr. and Mrs. Sprat's house to find out what ails them, following little Bo Beep out to the Welsh pasture to learn how she lost track of her sheep, conjuring up a twin brother for Little Miss Muffet, and much more. Save The Village features Herman's beloved home village, which feels itself like a character as alive as any other we meet in this novel as sprawling as it is particular. Life hasn't turned out quite the way Becca Cammeyer of Greenwich Village – once voted most likely to land on Broadway or in jail for a good cause – had planned. Her only child has moved to another continent, she's still living in a fifth-floor walkup with her aging dog, still single, still nearly broke, still not on speaking terms with her best friend or mother, and still hearing the ghost of her long-dead father whispering in her ear. But she's a semi-famous tour guide, and on a perfect October evening, Becca almost believes all is well with her world as she helps a group of South Carolinian tourists fall in love with her beloved Village. The tour concludes, and Becca sends the women on their way, unaware that her world is about to be upended. In the aftermath of a tragedy, Becca must come to terms with her own paralysis, her survivor's guilt, and the messiness of her life. She embarks on wildly improbable reconciliations and new relationships. This week on Parent Tell Kaila talks about revamping kids music with Jeff Fajans, a creative coach and musician. Jeff decided to write and produce his own children's music albums after realizing that what was already out there just wasn't cutting it. Using the name Mrboodaddy (because who said our AIM names would never come in handy in our adult lives), Jeff has created a new style of music for kids that is edgy, relatable, and also doesn't make parents want to immediately insert some earplugs. Kaila and Jeff have an important discussion, where they kinda sorta bash the "traditional" kids' music, sorry not sorry, Little Miss Muffet, but also discuss that this new style of music goes deeper than just proclaiming a toddler's love for trash trucks. Millennial parents are focused on respecting their children as individuals and want to reach them creatively and encourage them to relate to the world around them.  Empowering children + giving them the respect that many of us who grew up with Baby Boomer parents didn't necessarily get until later in life, if at all = Big Millennial Parent Energy.Jeff Fajans is a creative performance & leadership coach who works with creators and entrepreneurs to help them bring their biggest ideas to life and become better leaders. Sunni and Lisa are joined by  Dr. MarkAlain Déry who talks about structural racism in healthcare and his latest venture into health education via animation. Dr. MarkAlain Déry, who is a nationally recognized HIV/AIDS advocate and Medical Director of Infectious Diseases and Chief Innovation Officer for Access Health Louisiana – the largest Medicaid-providing clinic system in Louisiana. Throughout his career Dr. Déry has been dedicated to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and the social justice issues tied to it.  His most current efforts include releasing a series of free, innovative animated videos aimed at conveying crucial health messaging surrounding HIV medications designed to destigmatize HIV and people of trans experience. A truly exemplary infectious disease physician, even being named Internist of the Year by the American College of Osteopathic Internists, Dr. Déry remains steadfastly committed to working for human rights and social justice.  NoiseFilter — an educational platform that addresses health and wellness topics through creative storytelling — in conjunction with Access Health Louisiana (AHL) and theAIDS Education Training Center, is pleased to announce a new animation trilogy aimed at conveying crucial health messaging around HIV and HIV medications. NoiseFilter is hosted by Dr. MarkAlain Déry, an infectious disease physician, and Dr. Eric Griggs (Doc Griggs), a community health specialist both of AHL. Through daily podcasts, engaging live streams and whimsical animations, the doctors explain complex health topics simply and creatively. Dr. Déry is also the Medical Director of Infectious Diseases and Chief Innovation Officer for Access Health Louisiana where he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS at the Pythian clinic in New Orleans. Alongside Dr. Déry and Doc Griggs, the new innovative animations — designed to destigmatize HIV while also amplifying the voice of people of trans experience — will also feature Milan Nicole Sherry, a trans rights activist and educator. “Our goal is to change the stigma that still remains around HIV,” said Dr. Déry. “The colorful and compelling videos use creative exploration into the human body to explain HIV medications and how they protect individuals from transmission.” In the first animation, Undetectable, Untransmittable and Undeniably Fierce! Déry and Doc Griggs journey inside Milan's body to explain that people living with HIV, who are taking their medications, can have the same quality and quantity of life as individuals living without HIV, also known as U=U.  The human immune system is depicted as an orchestra and illustrates how, when introduced, HIV causes chaos for the musical conductors. Get in Step with PrEP, the second animation, also features Milan as she joins Dr. Déry and Doc Griggs inside of Dr. Déry's body to explain how PrEp, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, prevents HIV transmission. In the video, PrEP is seen as a force field, targeting HIV once it enters Dr. Déry's body. One of the key takeaways is that people living without HIV can take PrEP as a defense as the autoimmune disease. The third animation, Little Miss Muffuletta (a reference to the popular New Orleans food staple), uses the classic nursery rhyme of Little Miss Muffet to explain nPEP or non-occupational post exposure prophylaxis. In this clever animation an HIV exposure has occurred and nPEP is needed to prevent HIV from replicating. When nPEP is us

Hello! This week because the Ashes cricket match between England and Australia has just begun our first question is about cricket. It is from Matilda who would like to know why cricket is called cricket and what are the ashes? To answer it I have cricket legend, Mikey Holding, one of the fastest bowlers ever and a top cricket commentator who knows all about the game. Our second question is about a creature related to the insects called crickets. It's from Aveline, and she asks how grasshoppers eat. Find out all about them as well as lots about insects including how many there are in the world and how many you'll find in just one big field! Plus what Little Miss Muffet's father had to do with insects and about spider crickets, crickets that can jump but look like spiders! Our last question is from our littlest question asker ever on the podcast, it's from Arlo who is two and he would like to know what does incy wincy spider need? You'll find out the answer this week! A huge thank you to Mikey Holding for talking to us about cricket and of course a big thank you to Arlo, Matilda, Aveline for this week's questions! I'll be back next week answering more questions from children around the world in another episode of EUTS. Do send in your questions, there's info about how to do that on the show's website, everythingunderthesun.co.uk. Remember, the questions will now also be in a BOOK, I need all the questions soon as I'm busy writing away so please do send them in as soon as you can! There's only room for a few more so send them in today! If you like the show people do rate, review and subscribe and tell all your friends to do the same, it really does help! Wine and cheese are perfect partners and knowing more about each will help you go from good to great with pairings! Cheese Master Jill Davis of Murray's Cheese tells us all about cheese and we discuss how best to pair certain types of cheese with wine! Here are the notes: There is an amazing parallel history of fermented stuff -- we discuss the evolution of wine and cheese and how they are so very similar. Jill gives us a primer on how to make cheese. We talk cows, sheep, goats, and buffalo and how seasons, geography, and diet all make a huge difference in how our cheese tastes. Little Miss Muffet gets a nod in this part of the show too (curds -n- whey, anyone?) We discuss the various categories of cheese --fresh, bloomy rind, washed rind and what fits where.  We talk about why European cheese is different/better than the cheese available in the US and UK often. While still discussing cheese making and types, we weave in lots of info about pairing. Bloomy rinds and Champagne blue and a great sweet German Auslese medium cheeses like wax Gouda with Beaujolais washed rind or aged cheese with tannic, barrel aged reds. And our favorite adage "what grows together, goes together!" Finally, I offer some commentary on how wine may need to become more like cheese to get rid of the snobbery. It's up for debate, but it's food for thought!
