84, 9-4, SHOW NOTES & COPYRIGHTS, (Scheduled 12/29/2022) Today we are going to talk about the new year and what it can and hopefully will mean for us.We'll start with a poem that comes after the Christmas poems in God Still Rhymes. This poem was probably written in 2017THE YEAR'S LAST THOUGHT (God Still Rhymes, pg. 125)(Not what it oughtNot what he broughtNot what he thought)At that hour it was dark.He was carrying the booksAs he walked through the park.Strangers gave him strange looksAs they crossed his path.Pausing – you do the math:What is two times too many?More than a pennyBut less than time?He asked, “what of me is mine?”Then it was as if the soles of their feetHad trampled his soul as he crossed the street. The task . . .Was it lying or lying ahead?Where was the truthWhere all was false?Could there be an heirWaiting in the air? What is there,What is fair,Does one care,Does one dare,As one staresAt the stairs? Is there dangerWith the stranger? Can the doctorCure the sickBy doctrineOf infectious wordsThat cut and sting,That strangleOne's lifeAnd maybe another's?Yes, in the Almighty Healerthere is Hope.Reflection on The Year's Last ThoughtI'm sure I know why I get in moods like the one I was in when I wrote this poem. Sometimes I distance myself from the people I should be getting closer to. For some reason I had this foolish thought going through my mind for quite a few days. The thought, are all poets tortured souls. I had no I idea. I just knew that I was allowing myself to be that tortured soul. Was it so I could write this poem? I didn't know. But, I do know there was a reason for it. Now as I am writing this explanation I know it was God calling me to come home again. I added the last two lines after realizing God's purpose for this poem.Discussion: As I reread this poem when looking for poems or today's podcast, I realized that is reminds me of today, how in the world we are living in now can do this to us if we do not have Jesus to lift us up and above the everyday – everything the world wants for us.The next poem is from one of the unpublished files.GO GENTLEGo gentle into the nightAnd into the fading light. There is no more fightSurviving on God's might. The shadows will fallAs you hear God's call. There will come a timeWhen you hear His rhyme.Worry not about the morning dewKnowing that God loves you.Go gentle into your living,Embrace what God is giving.7/30/19, tcarterDiscussion:Even though this was written many months into the year, I believe that it is how we should start our new year, by turning over our lives to Jesus. We can turn over a new leaf with a New Year's resolution year after year, or we can turn over everything to Jesus and let Him lead us into joy and satisfaction that is everlasting. Once and always forever. One from God's RhymeHIS BLESSINGS RHYME (God's Rhyme, pg. 88)My hopes, my needs, the cure for my...

According to the RSF (Reporters Without Borders), World Press Freedom Index for 2022 Sweden ranks #3 just behind Norway and Denmark. The list is based on the degree of freedom journalists and news organizations have in each country and the efforts that authorities make to safeguard this freedom. Today I want to explore what freedom of speech and censorship mean in Sweden. Openness and transparency are vital parts of Swedish democracy. There are four fundamental laws that are the controlling this;the Instrument of Government (targets and rules for how the state should be organized and governed)the Freedom of the Press Act (protects freedom of speech in print)the Fundamental Law on Freedom of Expression (the right to express yourself and state your opinion)the Act of Succession (specifies how the royal crown is inherited when the current king or queen dies)A survey was conducted by PEW Research Center in 2019 About how democracy works in their country and we are going to take a look at the following statementsThe rights of people to express their views in public are protectedMost people have a good chance to improve their standard of livingThe court system treats everyone fairlyElected officials care what ordinary people thinkNo matter who wins an election, things do not change very muchMost politicians are corruptMost people live in areas where it is dangerous to walk around at nightAnd we will compare the answers between people in Sweden with people in the US and the world.Support the showThank You for listening to A Swedish Fika. It's Gail Nobles from the CAT BEAR. Tonight I'm thinking of Benny Mardones, and I'm thinking of his song, Into The Night. If I could flyI'd pick you upI'd take you into the nightAnd show you a loveLike you've never seen.Into the night hit the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart twice in 1980 (#11) and again in 1989 (#20). Mardones co-wrote the 1980 soft rock hit with Robert Tepper. Benny Mardones said: "It's about a young girl 16 yrs. old who use to walk my dog every morning before school and her family. And the father abandoned them. She came to get the dog one morning. We were up all night writing, and as she walked out, Robert said, "Oh my goodness." And I said, "She's just 16 yrs old. Leave her alone." And I said, "Play that lick again and I went .. She's just 16 yrs old ......"Announcer: The song is about abandonment of kids. It was not about Benny with a 16 yrs. old girl. Benny Mardones: She was like a kid sister to me. Her and her brother and her sister.Announcer: As we listen to the song, we hear it as romantic. So there is more explanation to it. You're listening to Explanae Moment. Today's topic is "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones. ..

In this episode I share two 'poems for a pandemic' I've recently written, and I chat to my friend Marissa who also wrote one after I asked my poet friends to join me in writing these. Below are the words to Marissa's poem: The Hopeful Calm, Marissa Niven~~~Surreal.Definition:Having the qualities of surrealismExample:To live through a time you know history will look back on,Whilst doing nothing noteworthyAnd yet in doing soMaking historyThis situation is surreal to meYou got people too scared to go into the streets,While neighbours ignore fears and say cheers to breaking the rules,You'll find no social distancing hereShopping aisles turned to fight clubs,City streets to forgotten histories,Pharmacies look like crime scenes, taped up cause the visual makes it impossible to ignore the new boundariesMaybe that's why there's a reminder on every screen...News headlines never change,Just the numbers do,And it's easy to forget that each number is a name, and each name is a person, and each person is a story-...a story with an unsatisfying end…And still we have leaders who manage to pretend that things aren't so badAnd I wonderDo they see the same news we do?Do they see their people dropping in the streets?Hear the pleas of their doctors to help them?Or do they only care about who can buy the best publicity and make profit from tragedy? And as is the way with Tragedy,She brought her brother RageAngrily he searches for someone to blame for his sister's griefBut blame is a funny thingFor rage leads to blame, and blame leads to rage, and all too soon tragedy is born again anew,And I fear for the people who those grieving will blameA 2 year old stabbed in a parking lot can attest to thatDrowning in the pains of the world,And the ignoranceAnd the griefIt's easy to believe that hope she has left us…But ask Pandora what remained…When the box is opened,And the evils have been unleashedHope still stays.A quiet but steady light to fight the fright of perpetual nightAnd in this wayWe look past the noise of the world in panicAnd find the hopeful calmWe find it in the music played from balconies in cities,Closed down but never forgotten,In wild eyes of nature as she sends her children to reclaim what we have borrowed,In the sky's, clear for the first time in how many years,In the smiles of children, reminders of innocence still safe from all of thisAnd with our quiet hopeful calm,We wait for this to passFor while this fear may be loudIt is hope who's music lasts.

Isaiah 9:2-79:2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined.9:3 You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.9:4 For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.9:5 For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.9:6 For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.9:7 His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.Sing: O Come O Come EmmanuelO come, o come EmmanuelAnd ransom captive IsraelThat mourns in lowly exile hereUntil the Son of God appearRejoice Rejoice Emmanuel Shall come to thee Oh IsraelOh come thou day-spring come and cheerOur spirits by thine advent hereDisperse the gloomy clouds of nightAnd death's dark shadows put to flightRejoice rejoiceEmmanuel shall come to thee oh Israel2nd Corinthians 4:5-6 NEBIt is not ourselves we proclaim; we proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants, for Jesus' sake. Fair Janet's tied her kirtle greenA bit above her kneeAnd she has gone to CarterhaughAs fast as go can she, can she,As fast as go can she. And she hadn't pulled a single rose,A rose but only oneWell up then came a tall young manSays "Lady, pull no more, no more,Oh, Lady, pull no more." "How dare you pull a rose," he says,"How dare you break the treeAnd how dare you come to CarterhaughWithout command from me, from me,Without command from me." "Carterhaugh, it is my own.My father gave it to me.And I'll come and go", young Janet says,"And ask no leave of thee, of thee,Oh, I'll ask no leave of thee." Well he's taken her by the waist so smallDown to where the grass grows so greenAnd what they did, I just can't sayBut he never once asked her leave, her leave,Oh, He never once asked her leave. Fair Janet's tied her kirtle greenA bit above her kneeAnd she has to her father goneAs fast as go can she, can she,Oh, as fast as go can she. Four and twenty ladies fairWere playing all at chanceWell in there came young Janet fairAs green as any glass, any glassOh, as green as any glass, And up then spoke an old faced knightWatching o'er the game,"Alas my young poor girl for theeWe will take the blame, take the blame,Oh, we will take the blame." "Oh, hold your tongue, you old faced knightSome ill death may you die.I'll father my child on whom I willI'll father none on thee, be sure,I'll father none on thee." And up then spoke her father dear,And he spoke meek and mild,"Alas my young poor daughter dear,I think you go with child, with child,Oh, I think you go with child." "If that be so," Janet says,"Myself shall bear the blameFor there's never a knight in all your courtWill get the baby's name, name,Oh, will get the baby's name." "For if my love were an earthly knightAs he is an elven greyI'd never change my own true loveFor any knight you have, you have,Oh, for any knight you have." Well up then spoke her mother dear,She meant to do her harm,"There grows an herb in CarterhaughWill twine you and the bairn, the bairnOh will twine you and the bairn." Fair Janet tied her kirtle greenA bit above her kneeAnd she has gone to CarterhaughAs fast as go can she, can she,As fast as go can she. She hadn't pulled a single leaf,A leaf but only oneWell, up then came a young Tam LinSays, "Lady pull no more, pull no more,Oh lady pull no more." "How dare you pull a leaf," he says"How dare you break the tree. And how dare you harm the babe," says he,"That lies twixt you and me, and me,That lies twixt you and me." "Oh, tell me the truth, Tam Lin," she says,"If a mortal man you be.""I'll tell you the truth, fair Janet," says he,"I was christened as good as thee, as thee,I was christened as good as thee." "But as I rode out one better winter's dayWhen from my horse I fellThe Queen of Elfland she took meIn yon green hill to dwell, to dwell,In yon green hill to dwell." "And at the end of seven yearsShe pays a tithe to hellAnd I so fair and full of fleshAnd fear it be myself, myself,Oh, I fear it be myself." "But tonight is Hallowe'enAnd the morn is hallow dayAnd win me, win me and ye willFor well I wish you may, you mayOh, well I wish you may." "For at the murk and midnight hourThe fairie folk will rideAnd they that would their true love winAt Miles Cross they must hide, must hide,Oh, at Miles Cross they must hide." "Three companies will pass by the first on horses blackAnd then will pass the brownAnd when you see the milk white steadYou must pull the rider down, down,Oh, you must pull the rider down." "But then they'll change me, oh, in your armsInto many a things so wildBut hold me fast and fear me not.I'm the father of your child, you know,I'm the father of your child." Janet's tied her kirtle greenA bit above her kneeAnd she has to the crossroads goneAs fast as go can she, can she,Oh, as fast as go can she. The cold and gloom was the wayAnd eerie was the nightAnd a crescent moon hung in the skyAnd shown a ghostly white, so bright,Oh, it shown a ghostly white. Just at the murk and midnight hourShe heard the bridles ringAnd that poor girl was afeared at thatAs any mortal thing, any thing,Oh as any mortal thing. Oh three companies did ride by the first on horses blackAnd then there came the brownAnd when she saw the milk white steadShe pulled the rider down, down,Oh, she pulled the rider down. And thunder rolled and roared aboutAnd the stars burned bright as dayAnd the Queen of Elfland she spun roundCrying, "Young Tam Lin's away, awayOh, young Tam Lin's away." And in a flash they changed, oh, in her armsInto a lizard wildBut she held him fast and feared him notHe was the father of her child, child,Oh, he was the father of her child. And in a flash, they changed him, oh, in her armsInto a writhing snakeBut she held him fast and feared him notHe was one of God's own make, she knew,Oh, he was one of God's own make. And in a flash, they changed him, oh, in her armsTo a red hot block of ironBut she held him fast and feared him notAnd it did to her no harm, no harm,And it did to her no harm. And they they changed him, oh, in her armsInto a naked knightAnd she wrapped him in her cloak so boldAnd kept him out of site, site,Oh, she kept him out of site. But up then spoke the Fairy Queen,And fire burned in her eye,"You've stolen away the bonniest knightIn all my company, young girl,Oh, in all my company." "And what I know this knight Tam LinHad I but known beforeI'd have taken out your heart of fleshAnd put in one of stone, of stone,I'd have put in one of stone."
