We shall walk through the still town In a windless peace; We shall step upon white down, Upon silver fleece, Upon softer than these. We shall walk in velvet shoes: Wherever we goSilence will fall like dews On white silence below. We shall walk in the snow. "Disturb Us, Lord" by Sir Francis Drake Disturb us, O Lord, when we are too well-pleased with ourselves; When our dreams have come truebecause we have dreamed too little; When we have arrived in safety becausewe sailed too close to the shore. Disturb us, O Lord, when with the abundance of things possessed, we lose our thirst for the Water of Life; When, having fallen in love with time, we have ceased to dream of Eternity; And our efforts to build a new earth have allowed Your vision for a new heaven to grow dim. Stir us, O Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas where storms shall show Thy Mastery.Where, losing sight of the land, we shall find the stars, in the name of Him who pushed back the horizons of our hope and invited the brave to follow Him. "Christmas Bells" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I heard the bells on Christmas DayTheir old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeatOf peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come,The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken songOf peace on earth, good-will to men! Till ringing, singing on its way,The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublimeOf peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouthThe cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drownedOf peace on earth, good-will to men! It was as if an earthquake rentThe hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households bornOf peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head;"There is no peace on earth," I said; "For hate is strong, And mocks the songOf peace on earth, good-will to men!" Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail,With peace on earth, good-will to men." "Thanksgiving Day" (Over the river and through the wood) by Lydia Maria Child Over the river and through the wood, To grandfather's house we go; The horse knows the way To carry the sleigh Through the white and drifted snow. Over the river and through the wood-- Oh, how the wind does blow! It stings the toes And bites the nose, As over the ground we go. Over the river and through the wood, To have first-rate play. Hear the bells ring, "Ting-a-ling-ding!" Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day! Over the river and through the wood, And straight through the barn-yard gate. We seem to go Extremely slow-- It is so hard to wait! Over the river and through the wood-- Now grandmother's cap I spy! Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done? Hurrah for the pumpkin-pie! "Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore" by William Brighty Rands Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore —No doubt you have heard the name before —Was a boy who never would shut a door! The wind might whistle, the wind might roar,And teeth be aching and throats be sore,But still he never would shut the door. His father would beg, his mother implore,"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore,We really do wish you would shut the door!" Their hands they wrung, their hair they tore; But Godfrey Gordon Gustavus GoreWas deaf as the buoy out at the Nore. When he walked forth the folks would roar,"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore,Why don't you think to shut the door?" They rigged up a Shutter with sail and oar,And threatened to pack off Gustavus GoreOn a voyage of penance to Singapore. But he begged for mercy and said, "No more!Pray do not send me to SingaporeOn a Shutter, and then I will shut the door!" "You will?" said his parents; "then keep on shore! But mind you do! For the plague is soreOf a fellow that never will shut the door,Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore!" Hi, I'm Grace, and this is the Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Poems Podcast. "I Sit Beside the Fire and Think" by J. R. R. Tolkien I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen,of meadow-flowers and butterflies in summers that have been;Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there were, with morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair.I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will bewhen winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see. For still there are so many things that I have never seen:in every wood in every spring there is a different green.I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago,and people who will see a world that I shall never know. But all the while I sit and think of times there were before,I listen for returning feet and voices at the door. Science is more than just a collection of facts and theories; it's a dynamic story of discovery and innovation. And, ultimately, science leads us to worship our Creator in deeper ways. In my recent conversation with nuclear chemist (and homeschool science curriculum author) Dr. Jay Wile, we delve into why a chronological approach to teaching science can offer a richer, more integrated learning experience. By exploring the lives and contributions of key scientists through history, we not only understand scientific concepts better but also appreciate the development of human knowledge. Homeschooling parents seeking to inspire a love for science in their children will be encouraged and equipped by this episode. "From a Dakota Wheat-Field" by Hamlin Garland Like liquid gold the wheat-field lies,A marvel of yellow and green,That ripples and runs, that floats and flies,With the subtle shadows, the change, the sheenThat plays in the golden hair of a girl.A cloud flies there—A ripple of amber—a flareOf light follows after. A swirlIn the hollows like the twinkling feetOf a fairy waltzer; the colors runTo the westward sun,Through the deeps of the ripening wheat. I hear the reapers' far-off hum,So faint and far it seems the droneOf bee or beetle, seems to comeFrom far-off, fragrant, fruity zone,A land of plenty, whereToward the sun, as hasting there,The colors runBefore the wind's feetIn the wheat. The wild hawk swoopsTo his prey in the deeps; The sunflower droopsTo the lazy wave; the wind sleeps; Then, moving in dazzling links and loops,A marvel of shadow and shine,A glory of olive and amber and wine,Runs the color in the wheat. "A Quiet Life" by Baron Wormser What a person desires in lifeis a properly boiled egg. This isn't as easy as it seems. There must be gas and a stove, the gas requires pipelines, mastodon drills, banks that dispense the lozenge of capital. There must be a pot, the product of minesand furnaces and factories,of dim early mornings and night-owl shifts,of women in kerchiefs and men withsweat-soaked hair. Then water, the stuff of clouds and skiesand God knows what causes it to happen. There seems always too much or too littleof it and more pipelines, meters, pumpingstations, towers, tanks. And salt — a miracle of the first order, the ace in any argument for God.Only God could have imagined fromnothingness the pang of salt.Political peace too. It should be quietwhen one eats an egg. No political hoodlumsknocking down doors, no lieutenants who areticked off at their scheming girlfriends andtake it out on you, no dictatorsposing as tribunes. It should be quiet, so quiet you can hearthe chicken, a creature usually mocked as a typeof fool, a cluck chained to the chore of her body.Listen, she is there, pecking at a bit of grainthat came from nowhere. Let me let Kristen introduce herself in her own words: “As a first-generation homeschooling mom, I am deeply committed to nurturing my daughter's education while embarking on a learning journey alongside her. My husband and I have joyfully shared a decade together, embracing the adventures of life as a tight-knit trio. Rooted in our Christian faith, our family foundation is steadfastly anchored in Jesus Christ, who guides our lives and shapes our values. Near them, on the sandHalf sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,Tell that its sculptor well those passions readWhich yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;And on the pedestal, these words appear:My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!Nothing beside remains. Round the decayOf that colossal Wreck, boundless and bareThe lone and level sands stretch far away.” Hi, I'm Grace, and this is the Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Poems Podcast. "The Rainbow" by Christina Georgina Rossetti Boats sail on the rivers, And ships sail on the seas; But clouds that sail across the sky Are prettier far than these. There are bridges on the rivers, As pretty as you please; But the bow that bridges heaven, And overtops the trees,And builds a road from earth to sky, Is prettier far than these. "A Tragic Story" by William Makepeace Thackeray There lived a sage in days of yore,And he a handsome pigtail wore; But wondered much and sorrowed more,Because it hung behind him. He mused upon this curious case,And swore he'd change the pigtail's place,And have it hanging at his face,Not dangling there behind him. Says he, "The mystery I've found -Says he, "The mystery I've found!I'll turn me round," - he turned him round; But still it hung behind him. Then round and round, and out and in,All day the puzzled sage did spin;In vain - it mattered not a pin -The pigtail hung behind him. And right and left and round about,And up and down and in and outHe turned; but still the pigtail stoutHung steadily behind him. And though his efforts never slack,And though he twist and twirl, and tack,Alas! Still faithful to his back,The pigtail hangs behind him. "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by William Wordsworth I wandered lonely as a cloudThat floats on high o'er vales and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daffodils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shineAnd twinkle on the milky way,They stretched in never-ending lineAlong the margin of a bay:Ten thousand saw I at a glance,Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but theyOut-did the sparkling waves in glee:A poet could not but be gay,In such a jocund company:I gazed—and gazed—but little thoughtWhat wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lieIn vacant or in pensive mood,They flash upon that inward eyeWhich is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills,And dances with the daffodils. Today's guest podcaster is Katie Waalkes from Life in the Mundane. Katie is a second generation homeschooler married to her high school sweetheart for almost 15 years. Together they have 6 kids. She has been homeschooling for over a decade and has experience in homeschooling children who are neurotypical as well as kids with Autism, ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder, Dyslexia, Hearing Impairments, & Other Medical Needs. Her own ADHD diagnosis has helped her understand her kids better & allows her to adapt and pivot as needed for her chaotic life. Her passion is helping other homeschool families who don't fit in the box realize that God did not make a mistake when He put them in the families they are in. She loves to share about the flexibility and the individualized education that homeschooling provides and how you can live in that freedom instead of being burdened by the expectations of others. One of the family's mottos is "We strive for progress, not perfection" running the race that God marked out for us by being faithful in what He has called us to do and leaving the results to Him.
