As 2024 comes to an end, we look in a rearview mirror filled with some amazing films, especially ones that came out this year. Filmmakers around the world wowed us with creative stories, intriguing plots and outstanding techniques. It is definitely a great time to be a horror fan. 2024 was another stellar year for us at the podcast, where we covered a wide variety of subjects, from Bigfoot to Amicus Films, from Women Directors to Al Adamson & Sam Sherman, to more obscure topics like German Expressionism, and much more. We also had an astonishing lineup of special guests including Severin's David Gregory, Vinegar Syndrome's Archivist Oscar Becher, HorrorHound's Aaron Crowell, and Will Morris from Oscarbate and The Music Box Theatre, just to name a few. One thing that continues through this year is our constant love and admiration for those that have made some long lasting impact on the genre, and our constant striving to help share that love with our listeners. Nothing excites us more than hearing that we've turned someone on to a film or filmmaker or even sub-genre that they might have not experienced before. And you can be damned sure that we plan to continue that in 2025. So join us in this extra long special episode as we go over our favorite viewings of this year, as well as some shout-outs and discussions on other films that came out in 2024. On this Thursday bonus episode we are going to play the interview from episode 260 from April 2020 with director Neasa Hardiman who talks about making her first feature Sea Fever, which she coordinated across 4 countries and many different grants to do so, and what it was like to work in other environments. "Sea Fever" by John Masefield I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tideIs a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. We're celebrating National Poetry Month with musical presentations of poems taken from a gendered pair of 100-year-old anthologies published as The Girls and The Boys Book of Verse. Today's is John Masefield's famous poem of seafaring. The Parlando Project takes words (usually literary poetry) and combines them with original music we write and perform. We've done over 700 of these over the years and you can read about this and listen to them at our blog and archives located at frankhudson.org

One of the UK's most popular vocalists and broadcasters, Aled Jones MBE, today announces the release of his brand-new album which not only celebrates 40 years in show business but reveals some previously unreleased tracks, recently unearthed by Aled himself. Whilst visiting his family home in Anglesey earlier this year, Aled began reminiscing over the 40 years of memorabilia his parents have collected throughout his career. They literally had everything, even a collection of multi-coloured shirts and bow ties. Aled's mother explained they had been handmade for him by a BBC employee for a series he made in 1983, at the age of 13. This prompted Aled to go and find the original programme. He began to go through the footage and discovered recordings, which have never been released or even heard since the original broadcast 40 years ago. The album includes brand new arrangements of those classics including Ave Maria and Bright Eyes.Aptly titled, ‘One Voice – Full Circle', the new record is the fourth (and probably final, says Aled!) instalment in his utterly unique ‘One Voice' series in which, through the magic of technology, Aled is able to duet with his younger self: man and boy, baritone and treble. Here, album highlights include ‘Sailing', The Sutherland Brothers' 1972 track best known as a hit for Rod Stewart, Handel's ‘Where'er you Walk', from the musical drama Semele, Welsh love song ‘Bugeilo'r Gwenith Gwyn' and traditional ballad ‘Scarborough Fair'. Aled even tracked down the original 80's guitarist, Dylan Fowler, to re-record his part for this new recording. TRACKLIST:1. Bright Eyes 2. Sea Fever 3. Scarborough Fair 4. Where ‘ere You Walk 5. Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! On this week's show, we look at vampiric sea-fearing horror, The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Based on Bram Stoker's Dracula pages, The Last Voyage of the Demeter sees an England-bound cargo ship succumb to something beastly in the depths of the ship's cargo. Who or what is lurking in the shadows? Check out the show for more deets! Hot off the heels of DCs The Flash comes their latest superhero to make it to the big screen. Xolo Madridueña (Cobra Kai) stars as Jaime Reyes, who later becomes Blue Beetle. Promising to cure your superhero fatigue, Blue Beetle eschews any ‘grown-up' superhero antics (we're looking at you Batman), and delivers a family-friendly adventure. But is it any good? Download the show to find out! On Anniversary Corner we look back at Afflicted (2013). And on Hidden Gems, we bring you Sea Fever, an eerie psycho-horror set on the rough seas. And if that wasn't enough for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Thank you for supporting us and we hope you enjoy the show! 00:00 Intro 02:50 Shoutouts 04:12 Movie News 14:56 New on Streaming 18:36 New Trailers 22:19 Anniversary Corner 25:52 The Last Voyage of the Demeter review 35:58 Blue Beetle review 43:32 Sea Fever (Hidden Gem) 49:32 Outro

Infectious diseases are in the news today and horror and thriller films have been using them as a plot device for years. One of the most popular was THE THING (1982). Since then there has been a lot of movies that have copied it quite nicely including ALIEN RAIDERS (2008) and THE THAW (2009). Now in 2020, the internationally produced film SEA FEVER has arrived and it is getting positive reviews. Siobhán, a young marine biologist, joins an Irish fishing boat with a crew of six to study the traveling patterns of their latest catch. While aboard, they discover a strange molluscan like cedphalopoda that attaches itself to the port side of their boat. When a deserted Portuguese schooner brings with it a deadly secret, the seven crew members must make a decision that will determine their fate. The film stars an international cast including Connie Nielsen, Dougray Scott, and Hermione Corfield. Irish television director, Neasa Hardiman, wrote and directed the film. Getting fair to good reviews by most critics, Dark Discussions takes their own look at the movie and gives their take.
