Andrew's passion for archival VHS content takes center stage as he and Vieves unearth rare 90s commercial gems including a Jim Varney performance that somehow isn't Ernest P. Yanni started building in crypto back in 2013, when you could buy one Bitcoin for $20. At one point, he was playing poker games and betting 1 bitcoin each round! He built an extension that let people use bitcoin to buy anything, anywhere on the internet. Then he pivoted to building the first on ramp for bitcoin. And finally, pivoted into Wyre, which was like Stripe for Crypto, a platform to let developers build Web3 apps.In a couple of years he scaled it from nothing to a $90M run rate. In late 2021, he started working on an exit with Bolt. By mid 2022 the deal was signed. The company was to be sold for $1.5B.Yanni would make hundreds of millions of dollars himself. And then, at the absolute last minute, the world changed. Stocks fell, crypto plummeted— and the deal fell apart.Startups are often one call, one customer or, in this case, one day away from complete success—or total failure. That's the game you're playing. And there are few stories better than the one you're about to hear. Why you should listen- Why if you want to be a founder you can't avoid taking punches to the face- How Yanni found Bitcoin just a couple of years after it was started- Why it often takes multiple twists and pivots to find real PMF- How acquisitions tend to happen and why they can always fall apart Keywordsstartup, acquisition, Bitcoin, Web3, entrepreneurship, crypto, payment processing, innovation, technology, business, crypto, infrastructure, product-market fit, Web3, acquisition, startup challenges, fintech, business growth, developer support, market downturnTimestamps(00:00:00) Intro(00:01:50) Buying Bitcoin in 2013(00:04:48) Creating a Hacker House in San Francisco(00:19:08) Creating Crypto Wallets(00:26:41) Becoming Wyre(00:33:56) Making the Decision to Go All In on Crypto(00:41:18) The Acquisition that Didn't Happen(00:47:33) Learning from All the Mistakes(00:52:03) Some People are BuildersSend me a message to let me know what you think!

Some PEOPLE! Some people's KIDS! We say these phrases jokingly, but often behind the joking is a sentiment of criticism. Every man and woman has a sense of right and wrong, which becomes their moral compass. It is not quite clear to me why, but that compass becomes the standard to which we hold all others. We judge without thinking and it comes so naturally. We pettily discuss hair, speech, clothing, driving styles, diets, but most of all rearing children, often accompanied by the phrase, “I WOULD NEVER!” We judge the lowest members of our communities to the highest governing bodies without prejudice and do it to our own detriment. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the dangers of judging others and this in message we will spend some time unpacking Matthew chapter 7:1-12. So, if you find yourself a judge over others, don't worry. Our goal wont be to judge you, but to find freedom together! Pastor Matt McCarter
Episode 33 of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast is titled, Do You Have the Obesity Gene? The title comes from our In the News segment, where we dive into an article by CNN titled, Researchers Have Found A ‘Clear Genetic Trigger for Obesity' that Applies to Some People. According to the University of Exeter, a gene typically responsible for thyroid function and baseline energy expenditure named SMIM1, may be partially to blame for Obesity in those that carry two faulty copies of the gene. So, how does this affect the treatment of Obesity? Tune in to find out! In our Patient Story, we talk to Kate who had rapid weight gain after a partial hysterectomy due to PCOS. She needed bariatric surgery to get the weight off, but her insurance wouldn't cover it. So, she went to Mexico for the surgery and joined our nutrition program for her post-op care. She has lost 100 pounds since her surgery and 130 pounds off her highest weight! In our Nutrition segment, Zoe offers tips on how to add more movement into your day if you work a desk job, without going to the gym or adding an exercise routine into your already hectic schedule. Since the approval of GLP-1 use for the treatment of Obesity, one of the most frequently asked questions has been, “Why won't my insurance company cover the medication?” It all comes down to the acronym, QALY. In our Economics of Obesity segment, I break down QALY's and explain their purpose. Finally, we answer 3 of our listeners' questions including, whether or not a sleeve patient can have the LINX procedure, how to maximize protein without eating meat, and how to minimize hair loss after bariatric surgery.

Baxie talks with 80's Pop/New Wave/MTV sensation Belouis Some! In this interview Belouis (ne: Neville Keighly) talks about his fascinating journey from being a virtually ignored solo artist to recording his first album in 1985 with the likes of Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick (both from David Bowie's band) as well as Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson from Chic. That first album would yield two international hits (“Imagination” and the title track “Some People). Belouis talks about the release of his controversial music videos and about being handpicked to support Queen on tour the following year. He also talks openly about walking away from music in 1995 and why he made an incredible comeback after 24 years! Belouis Some was to begin touring the US with The Alarm and Jay Ashton's Gene Loved Jezebel later this month! That tour which as to include stops in Northampton and New Haven has been postponed. But the Belouis Some story is so amazing that it needs to be told! Every once in a while, we hear a story that floors us. Christelle Biiga's story is one of them. Today, she gets clients in front of the right podcast audiences to grow their businesses. Her company is called Exposure Maven. As a young girl in Cameroon, she bought into the American Dream. She knew no one in the states. Had no family or friends stateside. And could barely speak English at the time. But she still bought a one-way ticket to LAX. What Christelle couldn't know was that the next few years would stretch her resilience, patience, and spirit to their absolute limits. She would find herself coping with stress, trauma, and self-doubt. And she would discover just how much she was capable of as an entrepreneur. Christelle talks about:Being illegally detained at LAXSpending 9 months in a detention centerPersistence in the face of doubt and obstaclesHow her trauma resurfaced in the middle of a shiftSharing her traumatic story and overcoming shameThe importance of staying busy and embracing unpredictability We'd love to hear your feedback! It has occurred to me that there is great interest in the background to the current conflict. Here is a discussion of the Palestinian Refugees of 1948. This is an extremely important topic surrounded by false narratives and inflammatory rhetoric. I have put off preparing a podcast for some time, but not because it is sensitive. I deal with quite a few sensitive topics. It goes with the territory. But in this case, a reason for my hesitation is that I have a written briefing document that is the basis of this podcast. It is very thorough and is fully available to anyone through Deep Blue. (See the separate podcast on how to access Deep Blue). It has the same title as this podcast. But I have thought for some time that transferring that written document to a podcast would be a good thing. My hesitation is that I will be reading and improvising from a printed text into the spoken word. I am worried about jumps and stops and stumbles along the way. I hope those who listen to this will find it useful. It will certainly introduce some information that is new to most of you. And if you also want to download the document from Deep Blue that is good given that it has additional information in it. https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/handle/2027.42/110670Note that there are previous podcasts on The Palestine War of 1948, and The Palestinians After 1948. Content warning: this episode contains graphic content. Maisa Mumtaz-Cassidy thought she was going to die. She's the Founder & CEO of Consciously, an ethically-sourced and sustainable fashion platform. Between an incredibly tense childbirth, starting a business in the grips of COVID, and contracting the virus herself, it wreaked havoc on her mind and body. But she managed to keep it all together. Being forced to walk such a winding path reminded Maisa of her own mother. Like her, she was an entrepreneur in the garment industry. And at just 26, she became a single mother of 3 after leaving an abusive marriage. This is an episode about determination, grit, and persistence. Maisa talks about the moments where she almost threw in the towel, the importance of buckling down on fair pay, and how the warmth of family keeps her striving forward. Maisa talks about:How she juggles parenthood & passionHer incredibly difficult pregnancy experienceHow she deals with "mom guilt" as a new entrepreneurHaving a lack of mom friends who are also entrepreneursThe importance of supporting ethical manufacturing as a business ownerStarting Consciously during the pandemic after giving birth to her first child We're nominated for a Signal Award! Self-compassion reduces our feelings of shame and self-doubt. We explore a practice to help quiet our inner critic with kindness. Link to episode transcript: https://tinyurl.com/ytek6jxk Episode summary: What does your inner critic sound like? For René Brooks, it's the adults who misunderstood her ADHD symptoms as a child, before she was diagnosed later in life. For our show, René tried a self-compassionate writing exercise that helped her re-examine how she treats herself in difficult situations. She highlights why self-compassion is so important for marginalized communities in particular, and how as a Black woman, she puts double the pressure on herself to achieve and has come to use shame and self-judgment to motivate herself. The practice helps her to disrupt that tendency by noticing the way she speaks to herself and learning to take a more compassionate tone, instead. Later, we hear from psychologist Serena Chen, who expands on how cultivating self-compassion can help us embrace our true selves, which can lead to greater life satisfaction, increased well-being and closer social relationships. Practice: Think of something that makes you feel guilty, ashamed or insecure. Notice how you feel and write down your emotions. Imagine someone who loves you unconditionally and write a letter to yourself from their perspective, using the tone they would use with you, and expressing acceptance and understanding. Acknowledge that no one is perfect and there are likely many people struggling with the very same thing you are. In a compassionate way, ask yourself whether there are things that you could do to improve or better cope with this negative aspect. Focus on how constructive changes could make you feel happier, healthier, or more fulfilled, and avoid judging yourself. Try to complete the practice on a weekly or monthly basis. May's Marketing Bulletin from the Global Market Development and Reputation Management teams at the Almond Board of California. Leveraging Nutrition Research The Almond Board is currently running ads on Facebook and Instagram encouraging consumers to learn more about the benefits of eating almonds before meals. Ads seek to reach people that express interest in topics such as specific diet trends (e.g., paleo, keto), nutrients, or visit health websites like WebMD, and more. The ads just aren't running in the U.S. but have been translated into local language and are running in seven other markets around the world. They will run through mid-May in an effort to support two new research studies that have been published in recent months and are featured in the press release Eating Almonds Before Meals Improved Blood Sugar Levels in Some People with Prediabetes. A First-of-its-kind German Partnership The Almond Board of California has formed an editorial partnership with Brigitte, a popular German women's lifestyle magazine, to educate Germans on how California almonds are grown sustainably and are nutritious. The partnership includes online and print articles, and videos emphasizing the industry's water and zero-waste practices. In the messaging, almond grower Christine Gemperle discusses how almond farmers use water efficiently, reducing water consumption per pound of almonds by 33% between the 1990s and 2010s. The articles also cover the health attributes of almonds – which include 13 grams of unsaturated fat (only 1 gram of saturated fat) and 6 grams of protein pers serving – and include comments from German nutritionist Rebecca Kunz. The efforts are the first editorial partnership designed specifically for the German market. Expo West and Award The Almond Board of California attended the Natural Products Expo West, the world's largest natural, organic, and health products trade show, to keep up with the latest trends and innovations in the food industry. ABC staff prioritized interacting with companies that include almonds in their products as part of their ongoing effort to support food makers who incorporate almonds in their recipes. Sustainability was a dominant theme at the event, with companies supporting regenerative and organic agriculture, upcycling food, and utilizing sustainable packaging. Consumers expect brands to be transparent about their sustainability initiatives, and companies are including consumers on the journey to make informed purchasing decisions that align with their values. The Expo West also focused on the slogan "real food and local communities," and how brands add value to the local community. The event highlighted the health and wellness of food products, and how consumers want to know how foods and specific ingredients can benefit their personal health. Also at the conference, The Almond Project, a multi-year, farmer-led project by Treehouse California Almonds, was honored with the Regeneration & Sustainability Award for their sustainability program. ABC Board Member Joe Gardiner accepted the award on behalf of Treehouse California Almonds.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On the FLI Open Letter, published by Zvi on March 30, 2023 on LessWrong. The Future of Life Institute (FLI) recently put out an open letter, calling on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. There was a great flurry of responses, across the spectrum. Many were for it. Many others were against it. Some said they signed, some said they decided not to. Some gave reasons, some did not. Some expressed concerns it would do harm, some said it would do nothing. There were some concerns about fake signatures, leading to a pause while that was addressed, which might have been related to the letter being released slightly earlier than intended. Eliezer Yudkowsky put out quite the letter in Time magazine. In it, he says the FLI letter discussed in this post is a step in the right direction and he is glad people are signing it, but he will not sign because he does not think it goes far enough, that a 6 month pause is woefully insufficient, and he calls for. a lot more. I will address that letter more in a future post. I'm choosing to do this one first for speed premium. As much as the world is trying to stop us from saying it these days. one thing at a time. The call is getting serious play. Here is Fox News, saying ‘Democrats and Republicans coalesce around calls to regulate AI development: ‘Congress has to engage.' As per the position he staked out a few days prior and that I respond to here, Tyler Cowen is very opposed to a pause, and wasted no time amplifying every voice available in the opposing camp, handily ensuring I did not miss any. Structure of this post is: I Wrote a Letter to the Postman: Reproduces the letter in full. You Know Those are Different, Right?: Conflation of x-risk vs. safety. The Six Month Pause: What it can and can't do. Engage Safety Protocols: What would be real protocols? Burden of Proof: The letter's threshold for approval seems hard to meet. New Regulatory Authority: The call for one. Overall Take: I am net happy about the letter. Some People in Favor: A selection. Some People in Opposition: Including their reasoning, and complication of the top arguments, some of which seem good, some of which seem not so good. Conclusion: Summary and reminder about speed premium conditions. I Wrote a Letter to the Postman First off, let's read the letter. It's short, so what the hell, let's quote the whole thing. AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research[1] and acknowledged by top AI labs.[2] As stated in the widely-endorsed Asilomar AI Principles, Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned for and managed with commensurate care and resources. Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening, even though recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control. Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks,[3] and we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization? Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable. This confidence must be well justified and increase with the magnitude of a system's potential effects. OpenAI's recent stateme...
