Today I sat down with my good friend Robert. Robert Borelli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1954, in the middle of the Gambino Crime Family neighborhood. As a young boy, he quickly built a reputation as a little tough guy. Surrounded by real tough guys he began working for The Gambinos by fourteen. By twenty he had two murder wraps and numerous arrests under his belt. He was being paraded around the neighborhood as the up-and-coming star of the feared Gambino Family, the same family which John Gotti would eventually bring into the mainstream media and make a household name. Over the next twenty-two years, Robert fell hard into the mafioso lifestyle which involved money, crime, and drug addiction. In 1997, as a forty-four-year-old man, he found himself in jail, looking to serve ten to twenty years. With over 130 criminal charges against his name, it was obvious he had become a career criminal. With no help from the Mob, his friend's life seemed hopeless. Little did he know his story had just begun. In jail, Mr. Borelli found redemption and a second chance. He discovered the truth, faith, and purpose like nothing he had ever experienced before. With a new outlook, on life, for the first time, he decided to do right instead of wrong, to love instead of hate, and to serve instead of take. From there, Robert Borelli spent time studying the Word of God at both Criswell College and Christ for the Nations Institute. He gained some intense formal education in his newfound faith. Mr. Borelli's story baffles the mind and intrigues the hearts of all who hear it. His passion and calling are to share his story as a preventive to those who are in similar situations and encourage each of us to find the Truth about who we really are. Today, as he tours around the world, he candidly, emotionally, and passionately shares his life story with all who will listen. For information contact robb@robertborelli.com

In this episode of The Sober Sitdown we interviewed author Kathryn Genovese. Eyes of a Survivor is a true story about a tenacious native girl from Ohio - Kathryn Marie Genovese - who gets caught up in the misery of abuse, destruction, and addiction at a very young age. The book conjoins various stories where she shares her life struggles through addiction and her present being where she stands as of today; being a very empowered woman. When dealing with depression, the darkest parts of her life, and the struggles, like an ordinary individual, she started thinking that there is no way out or no way back to living a sober life. Once you have deciphered or become part of the street life, these thoughts become inevitable, and surviving through them appears blurred but only the ones with a strong mindset, resilience, and willpower survive, which is called ‘survival of the fittest.' As time passes, you become aware of the street crimes and the angles, the ends, and outs of drug dealings and so much more under the radar. Eyes of a Survivor depicts the story of the faith and belief of this woman. For the individuals willing to make a 360° turn, this book can serve as perfect self-help guidance to bring them out of addiction and slavery of evil, avoiding them from the afterlife of h***. This book will give you back your integrity and your sobriety and would return you toward your faith and goodness. The belief in self-reliance will open up the doors for you. Kathryn's father served as a motivation and role model for her newfound life which brought her to this point. Through this book, she aims to present examples to millions of other people who are looking for a ray of hope that we must just be true believers and have strong faith! It's OK to breathe again and build your self-respect, which will become a product of your own truth as well as your being. In the end, she has a message to all the people out there, “God bless! I hope you enjoy my testimony and my truth.” You can purchase the book at Title: Eyes of a Survivor: https://www.amazon.com/Eyes-Survivor-Kathryn-Marie-Genovese/dp/B0B3F2C423#aw-udpv3-customer-reviews_feature_div

I can relate to this scene very clearly. In my early days in the family business with my father, I would catch myself eliminating a positive with a negative. So after working with him at the bar/restaurant I would try and stay out of trouble and go boxing or hit the gym after the gym I would be so wound up and have so much energy now I know it was anxiety from supplements I would take I honestly didn't know what to do with myself so I would want to go spend time with my father some sort of sporting event would be on and/or I knew where associates of ours would be so in order to hang out with him he would be in his living room he would be at the restaurant and bar so I would come in and he would be relaxing with friends of ours watching a baseball or basketball game, football whatever so I would try and sit down and have something to eat and hang out with them. Watching them drink and relax made my anxiety worse wanting to jump out of my skin seeing them relaxed and calm. Allowing my mind to play tricks on me I would say fuck it limit yourself to a couple. Yea I would have a couple with them and be more anxious than I originally walked in the first place. As they were sitting there relaxing and enjoying the game, my mind was racing pre-planning the next turn of events (well I know I got about an hour or two then these guys wanna go home and call it a night) I can go to this bar up the street till midnight then this other one that will let me stay after hours I can stop at this deli in between load up with more booze and hit the strip club or after hours bar and have booze at the house to get me to the point Of passing out and having enough to start my day in the morning. Call it sick? I do it is a disease. In this clip, you will see Christopher so socially uncomfortable worried about if people around him were ok and having a good time cause he's sober, but In fact, nobody cares honestly they are happy. They don't have to worry about you or babysit you. He speaks about not being around places that are triggers to him but tony couldn't understand cause he did not battle the disease of addiction. My father was my number one support, but relapse over relapse started with him telling me just stick with beer you don't get out of control as I did with liquor. Because he is a composed couple beer a night drinker he couldn't understand how I felt like I did. When I got sober three years ago I couldn't go sit down at a bar and watch sporting events with him it took years before I was comfortable being around others drinking but it was sacrifices I made to get myself where I needed to get. I missed many social events because I wasn't drinking but I also remember being an addict and blacking out at social gatherings I missed because I was present at the event but physically and mentally wasn't there back then and couldn't remember a minute of it. So what is the difference if I missed it or not it's better I missed it temporarily and sacrificed that time rather than remove myself from family and friends permanently cause I was on the road to an early grave?

Episode #13: Alan "Gunner" Lindbloom "Dark Days of Detroit"

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2022 93:15

Today I got to Sitdown with the legend himself Alan Gunner Lindbloom is an American novelist and entrepreneur known for his To Be A King novels and remarkable personal stories. Known to most as “Al” or “Gunner,” he has had quite an amazing life journey. Raised in and around the Detroit Mafia, known to law enforcement simply as the “Detroit Partnership,” Gunner was destined for a life of crime and, ultimately, prison. At only age 15 he was expelled from school indefinitely for being part of a stolen merchandise ring. He then became immersed in a full-time life of crime, and his life would slowly take him further into the world of organized crime, something that came very naturally to him. At age 15 Gunner started selling marijuana because he says his father didn't provide enough food for him. This led to the fencing of stolen merchandise he traded marijuana for. At age 17 he was convicted of two hand-to-hand sales of steroids, each sale over $5,000. His grandfather, Peter Paul Tocco, allegedly bribed the judge presiding over the case, and Gunner was given only 6 months in a county jail for the bust. Around age 19, Gunner was taken under the wing of a well-known Detroit Mafiosi named Anthony “Tony Jack” Giacolone, who was best known for being the number #1 suspect in the Jimmy Hoffa disappearance. Gunner's grandfather, Peter Paul Tocco, was “goombadi” with Giacalone. In fact, one of Tony's daughters married one of Peter Paul Tocco's nephews, solidifying the connection between the two families, a long-standing practice between mafia families in Detroit. They almost exclusively intermarry amongst a small handful of Sicilian families, whose connections date back several generations, to the small town of Terrisini Sicily. In Detroit, Tony Giacolone wasn't just another wise guy. He was the street boss, the face of the local mafia, and the undisputed king of illegal gambling in the city. Gunner's grandfather, Peter Tocco, was an accomplished sports handicapper and layoff bookie. Roughly the same age as Giacolone, the two had grown up together their entire lives and were related through several marriages. The men were both close personal friends, and it was rumored that Peter Paul Tocco was in fact a middleman between his cousin, Giacoma “Black Jack” Tocco, Boss of the entire Detroit Mafia, and Tony Giacolone, street boss, as well as several other high ranking Detroit Mafiosi. At some point, Peter Tocco would officially go on record and ask Tony Giacolone to put his grandson, “Alanzo,” to work. Tony did. For the next ten years, Gunner quietly lived a double life as a contract enforcer for Tony Giacolone's crew of bookies and loansharks, as well as engaging in small-time drug and street rackets for his uncle Peter Paul Tocco Jr, his uncle Salvatore Tocco, and at least a dozen other cousins and uncles in the mafia. It seemed Gunner had no real specialty in terms of crime. He did everything from work security and running poker games, to collections and robberies, to beatings and extortions. At age 29, Gunner would be indicted for extortion, bank robbery, armed robbery, kidnapping, weapons violations, and a litany of other capital crimes that carried up to life in prison. He would cop out to 13-50 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections, and serve 13.3 years total. In prison, Gunner Lindbloom decided he no longer wanted to live a life of crime. During a 17-month stretch in solitary confinement, he discovered that he had a knack for writing. Or at least creating. Shortly after that, he began writing and did not stop writing for the next 13 years, penning nine novels, including his debut TO BE A KING novels, which cracked the top 100 in their genre within weeks.

It was an era like no other. Beautiful people, designer clothes, designer drugs, house music, nightlife was at all-time highs, steroids, always something going on, everyone knew everyone and if you didn't you wanted to get to know everyone. People were rewarded and idolized for doing bad things and It was the modern version of the disco our parents lived in the 1970s. But this was different. We lost a lot of people who fell into this trap and some barely made it out. Others moved on and some sank into a funk of preventing them to start their lives and woke up to a late start. Then one day it was all over the lights came on and it was time to go home. For those of you who didn't get to live it, don't worry Scotty Stuch, Anthony Vallone, and my long-time brother Mikey “Whitey” Milunic will take you back way to where it all began. The modern-day disco and how it swept the upper East Coast like never before. Tonight for this segment about 2000-2015 will be something you won't wanna miss. It's Raw, Real, and Authentic.
