Episode 645: From Electrician to James Beard Nominee: The Jacob Sessoms Story

Restaurant Owners Uncorked - by Schedulefly

Asheville-based restaurateur Jacob Sessoms shares his 26-year journey from a trade-focused background in electrical work to becoming a James Beard-nominated chef. Sessoms details how his early experience in construction provided a unique "unfair advantage" in the restaurant world, allowing him to maintain his own facilities and stay resilient during lean times. He discusses the difficult transition from being a passionate cook to a disciplined business owner, highlighting the shift from sole proprietorship to a sophisticated investment model that allows for shared risk and growth. Throughout the conversation, Sessoms advocates for "running into the storm" like a bison, viewing failures, including the 2008 crash and COVID-19, as essential educational assets that build long-term grit and operational strength.10 Key Takeaways Technical Skills as Leverage: Jacob's background as an electrician allowed him to fix his own equipment, saving thousands in repair costs and proving his worth in NYC kitchens. The "Bison" Mentality: While cows run away from storms (and stay in them longer), bison run into the storm to get through it faster. Successful owners face challenges head-on. Cooking vs. Business: Opening a restaurant isn't about "making food"; it's a business of managing rent, debt, and payroll. The food is often peripheral to the objective of the business. Failure as Tuition: View financial setbacks (like a $14,000 audit) as the price of a business education you didn't get in a classroom. The Advantage of Being Under-Capitalized: Starting "scrappy" forces owners to learn every facet of the operation, building a foundation of resilience that over-capitalized owners often lack. Evolving Ownership Models: Moving from a sole proprietorship to raising equity from investors can provide a safety net and allow owners to "breathe" during cash-flow crunches. Economic Cycles: Recognize that the economy operates on 8-to-12-year cycles; understanding this helps owners prepare for the inevitable "down" periods. Strategic Partnerships: Success often relies on strong partnerships. Jacob continues to work with his ex-wife and primary business partner, Alicia, to manage their diverse portfolio. Turning Adversity into Opportunity: Jacob's first restaurant, Table, was born after a potential partner's struggles left him holding a lease he had to navigate alone. Practical Education: Jacob preferred the French Culinary Institute because it was 100% lab-based with no classrooms, emphasizing that hospitality is a craft learned by doing.

Falling in love with dance and yearning for more, Tina left her home in Lancaster, California to pursue her dreams in Hollywood. Auditioning for various dance productions around town, she landed a gig as a Laker Girl. She was well on her way, yet what could be considered a “big break” would be just the beginning when she was booked as a principal dancer for Michael Jackson's “Smooth Criminal” music video.Tina's hard work and commitment eventually landed her many dance roles in various music videos including her first spot as a touring dancer on Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation Tour. She eventually went on to choreograph Janet's next two world tours “Janet” and “The Velvet Rope” which earned her an Emmy nomination for the HBO special. She has also directed and choreographed national and world tours for many other artists. Tina is a 9-time MTV Choreography Award nominee and a 2 time MTV Award recipient for Michael and Janet Jackson's “Scream” and for Ricky Martin's “Livin La Vida Loca'.Her latest passion is giving back and helping young dancers navigate careers in the music industry by sharing and coaching them through her extensive experience and knowledge.Connect on Social Media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamtinalandon/

This week, we got a surprise nomination for the top role at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). On Tuesday, President Donald Trump quietly submitted Robert Cekada's nomination to the Senate. Cekada is currently ATF's Deputy Director and has worked at the agency for the last 20 years. To dissect what the pick means for gun politics and policy, we've got Bearing Arms' Cam Edwards back on the show. Cam said Cekada's background in law enforcement is likely to make him relatively uncontroversial in the Senate, which boosts his odds of being confirmed. He said Cekada could even gain at least some bipartisan support. But he also noted the same quality could irk some gun-rights activists. Cam agreed that Cekada was a much less aggressive pick than the two that former President Joe Biden made. He said picking a career ATF official to head up the ATF is unlikely to please those who want to see the agency change dramatically or even go away altogether. Still, he noted the gun industry is very supportive of Cekada's nomination and that could help sway other gun-rights advocates. Ultimately, he said the pick is likely to keep the ATF on its current trajectory. How people feel about the ATF's 2025 track record is probably a good barometer of how they'll feel about Cekada. Special Guest: Cam Edwards.

NWT Nominee Program applications open November 10 with revised eligibility criteria, released by North West Territories on November 05, 2025 Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Territorial News Bulletin from the Territory of North West Ter. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario.  NWT Nominee Program applications open November 10 with revised eligibility criteria The third 2025 intake of the Northwest Territories Nominee Program opens on November 10 at 9 a.m. These additional spots come following extensive advocacy work by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), leading to the Government of Canada's decision earlier this month to restore the territory's yearly full allocation of 300 nominations. To fill the remaining nomination spots in a timely manner, the program guidelines have been updated through to the end of 2025, changing eligibility criteria for applicants and employers. These revised guidelines include three key changes: 1. Removing the limit on employer applications: Employers will no longer be limited on the number of applications they can submit based on business size. 2. Removing work permit expiry date requirements: Under the revised guidelines, applicants with a valid work permit who meet all other eligibility criteria may now apply, regardless of their work permit expiry date. 3. Reinstating the previous work experience requirement: The Skilled Worker and NWT Express Entry streams will return to the work experience criteria used in 2024 and earlier. Applicants must have at least one year of full-time work experience within the last 10 years in the same or a similar occupation as the one for which they are being nominated. This experience may come from different employers. These changes will remain in place for the remainder of 2025. Application intake closes November 24, 2025, 5 p.m. The Northwest Territories Nominee Program will aim to process up to 103 eligible applications in order to meet its revised 300 nominations for 2025. Applications received in excess of 103 or applications that cannot be finalized by December 23, 2025, will be withdrawn. Edward Forst told lawmakers Thursday that he wasn't privy to the decision-making behind the General Services Administration's deal with xAI's Grok — but if confirmed to lead the agency, he signaled openness to examining the process that led to the procurement of the generative AI chatbot known for having an antisemitic meltdown. During a Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, ranking member Gary Peters, D-Mich., asked the GSA administrator nominee if he shared his concerns about Grok, pointing to the day the tool “produced racist and antisemitic content widely across [Elon] Musk's social media platform.” Forst, a former private equity and financial services executive, told Peters that he had “not been a part of the decision” by the GSA to contract for the chatbot from the Musk-owned AI firm. With some additional pressing by Peters, Forst acknowledged that procuring a tool with a history of racist and antisemitic posting is “not, I think, the signal we would necessarily want to send to the country.” Peters attempted to get Forst to commit to pausing use of Grok until the committee received “documentation about the details of the procurement, including whether the GSA actually performed a comprehensive risk assessment.” Forst wouldn't go that far on Grok, which once referred to itself as “MechaHitler.” But he did says his commitment to the lawmakers is that he will “meet with the team, and I'll understand the process used in selecting them, and I'll make sure that we have all the facts and if there was incompleteness to the process, that we'll rectify it.” A pair of federal judges said staff use of generative artificial intelligence tools and premature docket entry were behind error-ridden orders they issued, according to letters made public by Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley on Thursday. Judges Henry T. Wingate and Julien Xavier Neals, who sit on the U.S. District Courts for the Southern District of Mississippi and District of New Jersey, respectively, both stated in letters that their law clerks had used AI tools to draft orders that were then entered into the dockets before they had been reviewed. Both judges also described measures to prevent repeat issues. The letters come after the orders from both judges were ridden with errors — including misquotes and references to parties not in the current cases — and later withdrawn. Speculation swirled as to whether those judges used AI, which is known to hallucinate, in their orders. Earlier this month, Grassley, R-Iowa, sent letters to both jurists asking for an explanation. The communications published Thursday are responsive to those inquiries. In his response, Neals indicated that previous reporting by Reuters that a “temporary assistant” had used ChatGPT was correct. “In doing so, the intern acted without authorization, without disclosure, and contrary to not only chambers policy but also the relevant law school policy.” Neals said he prohibits generative AI use in legal research and drafting of opinions and orders. While that policy was verbal in the past, he said it is now a “written unequivocal policy that applies to all law clerks and interns, pending definitive guidance from the AO through adoption of formal, universal policies and procedures for appropriate AI usage. This Day in Legal History: PATRIOT Act IntroducedOn October 23, 2001, just six weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks, the United States House of Representatives introduced H.R. 3162, the bill that would become the USA PATRIOT Act. Officially titled the “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act,” the legislation represented one of the most significant expansions of domestic surveillance and law enforcement powers in modern U.S. history. The bill was drafted rapidly, largely by the Department of Justice under Attorney General John Ashcroft, and was introduced with bipartisan support.Key provisions of the act included expanded authority for wiretaps, the ability to access business and personal records through National Security Letters, and increased surveillance of internet and email communications. Section 215, in particular, allowed the government to obtain “any tangible things” relevant to a terrorism investigation, a phrase later scrutinized for its vagueness. Civil liberties organizations quickly raised concerns about the law's impact on privacy, due process, and the Fourth Amendment's protection against unreasonable searches.Despite these objections, the bill moved swiftly through Congress. The House passed it on October 24, and the Senate followed on October 25. President George W. Bush signed it into law on October 26, 2001. In the years that followed, the PATRIOT Act would become a focal point in debates over national security versus individual rights, particularly as revelations of mass surveillance by the NSA surfaced in the 2010s.Some provisions were later challenged in court, amended by Congress, or allowed to expire. Nevertheless, the PATRIOT Act reshaped the legal framework for counterterrorism in the U.S., leaving a legacy still felt in debates over surveillance, transparency, and executive power today.Several major lobbying firms in Washington, D.C., posted record or near-record revenues in the third quarter of 2025, driven by policy shifts under President Donald Trump and rising client demand for regulatory guidance. Ballard Partners led the surge, reporting a 400% year-over-year increase and nearly $25 million in lobbying revenue. Other top performers included BGR Group ($19.1 million), Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck ($18.9 million), Holland & Knight ($13.9 million), and Hogan Lovells ($4.4 million), each claiming their best quarter yet.The increase in lobbying activity was largely fueled by the Trump administration's aggressive moves on tariffs, trade, and the implementation of a sweeping tax-and-spending bill signed in July. Lobbyists noted that even during the early October government shutdown, regulatory deadlines such as public comment periods on tariffs kept work moving. Akin Gump reported $16.3 million, its best third quarter ever, and K&L Gates earned $5.4 million.Overall lobbying expenditures have continued to climb, with companies spending over $2.53 billion by late July 2025. Industries like pharmaceuticals, health products, and tech accounted for a significant share of that spending, reflecting ongoing regulatory and legislative uncertainty.Lobbying firms record 3rd quarter gains amid Trump policy shifts | ReutersPaul Ingrassia, nominated by President Donald Trump to lead the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, withdrew from consideration after losing Republican support in the Senate. He announced his withdrawal ahead of a scheduled confirmation hearing, citing an insufficient number of GOP votes. The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee had already postponed a prior hearing in August amid growing concerns.Senate Republicans distanced themselves from Ingrassia after Politico published alleged chat messages from him. His connections to controversial figures — including his legal work for Andrew Tate and attendance at a rally for White nationalist Nick Fuentes — drew additional scrutiny. Senator Thom Tillis labeled him “unfit to serve,” and Majority Leader John Thune confirmed the nomination was unlikely to move forward. The Office of Special Counsel plays a crucial role in enforcing civil service protections, particularly amid Trump's push to reshape the federal workforce. It also oversees Hatch Act compliance, which limits political activity by federal employees. With the Merit Systems Protection Board now restored, a new nominee will be needed to confront upcoming legal battles over career employee protections.Trump's Special Counsel Nominee Withdraws After GOP BlowbackIn Delaware court, tensions escalated between bidders and creditors over who should win control of Citgo Petroleum's parent company, PDV Holding, as part of a court-ordered auction aimed at compensating creditors tied to Venezuela's defaults and expropriations. The case, which has dragged on for eight years, now faces a decisive moment after three bidding rounds.A $5.9 billion offer from Amber Energy, affiliated with Elliott Investment Management, has been recommended by the court-appointed auction officer. However, Citgo's legal team and Venezuelan representatives argue the offer is too low, especially compared to a $7.9 billion bid from a Gold Reserve subsidiary. They also allege flaws in the auction process itself.Amber's bid includes a key side deal to pay $2.1 billion to holders of a disputed Venezuelan bond, making timing crucial since the agreement expires in early December. Gold Reserve, on the other hand, seeks to distribute more of the proceeds among a wider group of creditors, raising concerns over whether bondholders should benefit at all given unresolved legal questions about the bond's validity.Judge Leonard Stark also heard motions from Venezuela and Gold Reserve to disqualify him, court officer Robert Pincus, and two advisory firms over alleged conflicts of interest. The U.S. Treasury Department's approval is still required to finalize the auction, and both the Maduro government and Venezuela's opposition oppose the sale.Bidders, creditors battle in US court over who should win Citgo auction | Reuters This is a public episode. Then we will talk about how nonprofits can get involved with supreme court advocacy, nominees, and more while staying nonpartisan and being mindful of lobbying limits.    Attorneys for this Episode  Brittany Hacker  Susan Finkle Sourlis  Jamaal Lockings     Intro to Justice Program  Our justice team works on both federal and state judicial appointments and elections and runs numerous invaluable resources including our judicial vacancy tracker and helps keep us and the public informed about nominees. This includes the decisions they make after they've been confirmed, and how cases in federal courts – especially the supreme court – are impacting our civil rights and democracy.     Today, we are thrilled to be joined on the pod by our friend and colleague Jamaal Lockings. Jamaal is a fellow attorney who serves as a Dorot Fellow on the Federal Courts team.   Today we want to talk about the upcoming cases in this supreme court term, what we should be keeping an eye on, the potential impacts for our c3 partners, and what nonprofits can do during this term and future terms to advocate.     Cases to watch out for this term  Voting Rights and Money In Politics  Louisiana v. Callais  Issue: Whether a states efforts to comply with the VRA is, in itself, a form of racial discrimination   (1) Rehearing from last term (2) The Court is playing politics (3) the VRA is on the chopping block   Consequences: A final blow to the VRA, and increased difficulty for minority voters to participate in free and fair elections   National Republican Senatorial Committee v. FEC  Issue: Whether to maintain the federal limits on political party coordination w/ candidates in campaign advertising.   (1) Could render campaign contribution limits meaningless, increasing the already outsized influence of money in politics (2) These cases on elections and voting rights can't be observed in a vacuum     LGBTQ+   Chiles v. EPA nominee: Chemical reviews won't be compromised for AI data centers; Voting groups fight Trump's SAVE database overhaul

The Environmental Protection Agency's pledge to “get out of the way” on chemical reviews to accelerate the buildout of artificial intelligence data centers doesn't mean those reviews would be any less “robust,” a top EPA nominee told lawmakers Wednesday. Appearing before the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee, Douglas Troutman — President Donald Trump's pick for assistant administrator for toxic substances — was pressed by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., about comments made by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin last month following a White House roundtable with AI and data center leaders. In a Sept. 18 press release, Zeldin announced that the EPA would begin prioritizing the review of new chemicals — under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) — that would be used in data center projects. Markey asked Troutman, a former chemical industry lobbyist, what provisions in federal toxic safety laws indicate the EPA can “get out of the way of reviewing chemicals for safety.” Troutman responded that “nothing will change with regard to the robust review based on the risk-based statute enacted under Section Five of TSCA.” Markey appeared unconvinced, telling Troutman that if he's confirmed, he will “be under orders from Administrator Zeldin to get out of the way.” The Massachusetts Democrat made the case that “big tech bosses” with ties to the administration could lean on the agency to bypass regular review protocols. Voting rights groups are asking a court to block an ongoing Trump administration effort to merge disparate federal and state voter data into a massive citizenship and voter fraud database. Last week, the League of Women Voters, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and five individuals sued the federal government in D.C. District Court, saying it was ignoring decades of federal privacy law to create enormous “national data banks” of personal information on Americans. On Tuesday, the coalition, represented by Democracy Forward Foundation, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), and Fair Elections Center, asked the court for an emergency injunction to halt the Trump administration's efforts to transform the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements into an immense technological tool to track potential noncitizens registered to vote. Until this year, SAVE was an incomplete and limited federal database meant to track immigrants seeking federal benefits. In an Oct. 7 court filing, the groups said an immediate injunction was needed to prevent permanent privacy harms due to the “illegal and secretive consolidation of millions of Americans' sensitive personal data across government agencies into centralized data systems” through SAVE. In this episode of Crossing Faiths, John Pinna speaks with Michael Kinnamon, a novelist, professor of theology, and expert in interfaith relations, about his novel "A Rooftop in Jerusalem" and the broader themes of his life's work. Kinnamon discusses his three careers—as a professor, an ecumenical leader with the National Council of Churches, and now a novelist—and how they are all connected by the goal of fostering empathy and cross-cultural understanding. The conversation delves into the power of fiction to humanize complex political and religious conflicts by putting a face on headlines and allowing readers to inhabit different perspectives. They explore the central plot of Kinnamon's novel, a 40-year love story between an American Christian and an Israeli Jewish woman, which serves as a lens to examine the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the tension between unity and justice, and the role of hospitality in bridging divides. Throughout the discussion, Kinnamon emphasizes how personal relationships and shared experiences, often over meals, can break down stereotypes and create meaningful dialogue in a world defined by walls and conflict. Michael Kinnamon (https://michaelkinnamon.com/) is the author of two previously published novels: Summer of Love and Evil (2021) and The Nominee (2024). Prior to his career as a novelist, he was a widely respected professor of theology, author of numerous books on ecumenical and interfaith relations, and general secretary of the National Council of Churches in the US. [A Rooftop in Jerusalem](https://www.amazon.com/Rooftop-Jerusalem-Michael-Kinnamon/dp/B0DZQDMQ15/) draws on his extensive experience in the Middle East. Dr. Kinnamon and his wife, Mardine Davis, an art consultant, live in San Diego.

On Tuesday, the nomination of E.J. Antoni, the Chief Economist at The Heritage Foundation, to become the next Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was withdrawn. In his first long-form interview since his withdrawal, Antoni joins “The Signal Sitdown” for an inside look at life as a presidential nominee and the problems with our economic data that President Donald Trump is trying to solve. When Antoni met with the president in the Oval Office upon his nomination, the biggest piece of advice that Trump gave him was “always tell the truth.”  In the months since President Donald Trump nominated him for the position in August, Antoni has lived the unique life of a presidential nominee—constant meetings on Capitol Hill, continued preparation for the nominated role in the administration, and very little sleep. But, day after day, Antoni took the president's words to heart and told Senators the hard truths about our economy and our economic data. Antoni explained why the BLS is in desperate need of reform, ”The problems were starting to surface, really, many, many years ago with things like people just not responding to government surveys anymore. Those response rates have been steadily trending down,” Antoni told The Daily Signal.  Keep Up With The Daily Signal   Sign up for our email newsletters: https://www.dailysignal.com/email     Subscribe to our other shows:    The Tony Kinnett Cast: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL2284199939 The Signal Sitdown: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL2026390376   Problematic Women: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL7765680741   Victor Davis Hanson: https://megaphone.link/THEDAILYSIGNAL9809784327     Follow The Daily Signal:    X: https://x.com/intent/user?screen_name=DailySignal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailysignal/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDailySignalNews/  Truth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@DailySignal  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/dailysignal?sub_confirmation=1    Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform and never miss an episode.
