As we continue Season 5, Mike speaks with Alex Gibney (Agents of Chaos, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Taxi to the Dark Side) about his documentary series for HBO Max, “Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos”. If you are familiar with Gibney's work, you will know that his documentaries often have a political topic or a political edge, so it won't surprise you that while he doesn't overly focus on it, he does explore the ways in which the legendary HBO series was a commentary on America. But the true pleasure of this documentary is to witness the incredibly deep ways that Chase's own life informed his work and–this may actually be connected–the ways that Chase used techniques that he learned from directors like Polanski, Lucci, and Kubrick to shape his own cinematic language. Matt Birkbeck - The Life We Chose“The Life We Chose—an unforgettable story. A really great read.” —Nicholas Pileggi, author of Wiseguy and Casino and screenwriter of GoodfellasFrom Matt Birkbeck—investigative journalist and executive producer of Netflix's #1 movie Girl in the Picture—a revelatory father/surrogate son story that takes readers deep inside the inner workings of the mob through the eyes of William “Big Billy” D'Elia, the right-hand man to legendary mafia kingpin Russell Bufalino, who ran organized crime in the US for more than fifty years.William “Big Billy” D'Elia is Mafia royalty. The “adopted” son of legendary organized crime boss Russell Bufalino, for decades D'Elia had unequaled access to the man the FBI and US Justice Department considered one of the leading organized crime figures in the United States. But the government had no real idea as to the breadth of Bufalino's power and influence—or that it was Bufalino, from his bucolic home base in Pittston, Pennsylvania, who reigned over the five families in New York and other organized crime families throughout the country. For nearly thirty years, D'Elia was at Bufalino's side, and “Russ's son” was a witness and participant to major historical events that have stymied law enforcement, perplexed journalists, and produced false and wild narratives in books and movies—not the least of which being the infamous disappearance of union boss Jimmy Hoffa. In addition, their reach was illustrated by their relationships with Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Michael Jackson, Suge Knight, and many other celebrities and personalities.D'Elia became the de facto leader of the Bufalino family upon Russell Bufalino's imprisonment in 1979, and he officially took control upon Bufalino's death in 1994 until his arrest in 2006, when he was charged with money laundering and the attempted murder of a witness. He pled guilty to money laundering and witness tampering and was released from federal prison in 2012.Candid and unapologetic, D'Elia is finally ready to reveal the real story behind the myths and in so doing paints a complicated, compelling, and stunning portrait of crime, power, money, and finally, family.BookWebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
The following is excerpted from a newsletter Guy Kawasaki, the Apple and Canva evangelist, sent out about a week ago. I love his advice. I'd recommend you follow it when appropriate.Facts tell, but stories sell. If you want to change someone's mind, skip the data dump and share a story that resonates emotionally. When I was evangelizing the Macintosh, I didn't just talk about specs—I told stories about how the Mac empowered creatives to design, write, and innovate in ways they never could before.Stories bypass skepticism. They're not something people argue with, they're something people feel. Whether you're pitching a product or convincing your boss to greenlight your idea, craft a narrative that makes your audience see themselves in the story.By the way, I wrote a revised and updated edition of my book Wise Guy—it's new name: Wiser Guy. Don't miss a new collection of honest, humorous, and heartfelt stories! You can preorder it here: https://amzn.to/3GmUbdL.Appeal to Emotion, Not Just LogicPeople make decisions emotionally and justify them logically. If you're trying to win an argument, tap into what your audience cares about most. When I pitched the Mac, I didn't just say, “It's user-friendly.” I said, “It's the computer for the rest of us.” That phrase hit people in the gut—it made them feel included, empowered, and part of a revolution.Think about what your audience values. Is it security? Freedom? Belonging? Frame your argument in a way that aligns with their emotional priorities.Handle Skeptics Like a ProSkeptics are inevitable, but they're not your enemy—they're your opportunity. The key is to listen, not argue. When someone doubted the Mac, I didn't try to bulldoze them with counterpoints. Instead, I asked questions to understand their concerns and then reframed my argument to address those doubts. For example, if someone said, “The Mac is too expensive,” I'd respond, “It's an investment in your creativity and productivity. What's the cost of not having the best tools?” By reframing the conversation, I turned objections into opportunities.Make It About Them, Not YouHere's the secret sauce: people don't care about your argument—they care about how it affects them. When you're evangelizing an idea, focus on the benefits to your audience, not the features of your product or point of view. For instance, when I pitched Canva, I didn't say, “It's a graphic design tool.” I said, “It's the easiest way to make your ideas look amazing.” See the difference? One is about the tool, the other is about the user. This is a public episode. If there had been no cover-up of Robert Kennedy's complicity in the murder of Marilyn Monroe in 1962 and he had been prosecuted based on compelling evidence at the time, the assassination of JFK by Bobby's enemies would not have happened—changing the course of history and preventing the murder of media icon Dorothy Kilgallen. In a breakthrough book that is sure to be relevant for years to come, bestselling author (The Reporter Who Knew Too Much) and distinguished historian Mark Shaw investigates the connection between the mysterious deaths of motion picture screen siren Marilyn Monroe, President John F. Kennedy, and What's My Line? TV star and crack investigative reporter Dorothy Kilgallen. A former noted criminal defense attorney and network legal analyst, Shaw provides an illuminating perspective as to how Robert Kennedy's abuse of power during the early 1960s resulted in the murders of Marilyn, JFK, and Dorothy.Praise for Mark Shaw BooksThe Reporter Who Knew Too Much“The compelling story of Dorothy Kilgallen, the celebrated journalist once called ‘the most powerful female voice in America.'” —Nick Pileggi, author of Wiseguy and CasinoDenial of Justice“A worthy sequel to the mysterious whodunit that snuffed out the brave reporter, Denial of Justice is a true crime thriller that seeks to undo the label attached to Ms. Kilgallen's untimely demise. Mark Shaw has done an admirable and exemplary job in his work. Do not miss!” —San FranciscoBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

The splash zone? No, probably just balderdash, but Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck have much to discuss as the draft draws near. With Patrick Peterson in town, it gets one to thinking – is a cornerback the first-round choice? Another defensive lineman? A wrecker on the interior offensive line? All possible. Meanwhile, Peterson's return to Arizona generates so many memories, brings in so many names to visit, and underscores the benefit of making up with family. There is a special edition of Wise Guy – including a buzzer-beater(?), as well as Cam Skattebo talk. Calais Campbell domination, the mixologists in front offices, going without a phone, Winning Behavior, and the mock tendencies of both Darren and K1.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We try not to shed any tears for the semi-retirement of Ron Wolfley, but the trio of Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck have fairly good memories about Wolf, as well as the just-completed Scouting combine. Our trio reconvenes in person to chat about the mosh pit coming to the new Nashville stadium, combine buzz about Matthew Stafford staying and Aaron Rodgers moving, players who do or don't work out in Indy, quality over quantity search for the Cardinals on the D-line, Cam Skattebo's draft stock, an impromptu Wise Guy from Paul of all people, a lot of (non-)Winning Behavior, and positions the Cards might seek in free agency.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Through the 1970s and 1980s Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa served in the NYPD, rising through the ranks, each becoming decorated detectives. They are also responsible for what may qualify as the department's darkest chapter. For years the two cops operated not only as paid informants for the Lucchese organized crime family, but served as mob henchmen, committed a multitude of crimes and were involved in at least fifteen murders. And they came remarkably close to getting away with all of it. Michael Cannell, a former editor at the New York Times and author of the critically acclaimed A Brotherhood Betrayed, now has written the definitive account of the crooked cops' escapades and the trail of terror they left-which included the deaths and wrongful imprisonment of wholly innocent people-in BLOOD AND THE BADGE: The Mafia, Two Killer Cops, and a Scandal That Shocked the Nation (January 14, 2025; SMP). Our fearless trio debut a new segment this week with “The Wise Guy” on hiatus, but that's only part of the discussion for Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck. How much hate watching has been going on – or will be going on – with the Chiefs and/or Eagles? Will the #CramItVertical work of the Cardinals eventually create the same success as Philly? How do our hosts feel about the Brotherly Shove? There is also acceptance of the value of the ball, BJ Ojulari's recovery, what helping the edge might look like, Pro Bowl fun with Trey and Budda, MHJ's lessons from Dad, and feeling some kind of way about Dry January – including how it can be used for good.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As the new year begins and Dani Sureck refuses to give us any karaoke examples on air, Paul Calvisi and Darren Urban are still willing to talk Cardinals, like that last unlucky interception in L.A., Trey McBride's monster season, the need for better red-zone results, Marvin Harrison Jr.'s good game and continued improvement, whether we see James Conner in the finale, Michael Carter's swag, a reunion against Joshua Dobbs, who the Cardinals will play in 2025, what the NFC West could look like in 2025, and a solid season-ender for The Wise Guy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If your holiday shopping isn't done, you better get on it. Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck understand slow starts; they break down the Cardinals' own slow start in a difficult overtime loss in Carolina that ended playoff chances. On a short week, the trio discuss what one moment/stretch in a game would they like back; the injuries that whacked the offense over the last week, locking down McBride in Carolina, the continuing learning curve for Marvin Harrison Jr., struggles on defense, looking for a speed wide receiver, the benefits of the Budda signing, the Pop-Tart Bowl and innovative trophies, and a huge moment for Paul on The Wise Guy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Whadda you lookin' at? It's Johnny Da Big, Bankadelic's official Wise Guy of Debatable Talent, lending his nit-so-dulcet tones and storytelling to the holiday classic "Do You Hear What I Hear?" Or "What I Hoid," as he likes to say in his South Philly patois. Listen if you dare, maybe even share, it's better than being a grinch and far more satisfying. Ya got a problem wit day?
The Cardinals are still alive in the playoff chase, and Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Sureck feel that intensity - especially when Paul and Darren debate (is that what you call it?) the team reaching expectations this season. That's the gooey center of this week's holidayish treat, of which topics include the wedding luck of Dave Pasch, a run game that could feast in Carolina, DeeJay Dallas chaos, Kyler seeking TD passes, Marvin Harrison Jr.'s season close-out, Jonah Williams scoring a touchdown, a tough The Wise Guy hit for Paul, driverless cars, and the idea of dressing your car like a reindeer (Dani feels some kind of way.)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some tours yield $2 billion (right, Taylor Swift?), some tours just bring Paul Calvisi, Darren Urban and Dani Dureck back into the studio each week for tremendous podcasting even though they aren't getting Juan Soto money. The trio discuss the Cardinals' mode of play against the Seahawks after it was broached by Jonathan Gannon, the need to cut down on recent penalties, the line play since the bye on both sides of the ball, Kyler Murray's struggles of late, the Patriots turning to Drake Maye, what it would take for the wild card, Budda Baker on a rampage, and Cheers to another edition of The Wise Guy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Locked in for the stretch run? Dani Sureck sure is after going undefeated with her 15-0 week on picks. Now the Cardinals need to get there too with what has turned out to be a crucial game at home against the Seahawks. Win and move back to first place. Lose and see the mountain get incredibly steep. So Dani, Paul Calvisi and Darren Urban talk about what the Cardinals need to do after heartbreak in Minnesota (more TDs!), and discuss the roller-coaster of the end of the game, coming home to avoid the silent count, dominating the Vikings, the heater of Trey McBride, the Seahawks stealing one in New York, dealing with Leonard Williams, Darius Robinson's impact going forward, brain rot, The Wise Guy battle and did we mention Dani's perfect week?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's nearly Thanksgiving, although Dani Sureck is foregoing her beloved green bean casserole despite her strong feelings on the subject. We can't always get what we want, like the Cardinals wanting to emerge from Seattle with a win, now having to face a strong Vikings team in frigid Minnesota (yes, we know the game is inside.) Dani joins Paul Calvisi and Darren Urban to discuss the offensive line dealing with Leonard Williams and what the Seahawks might be building before their visit to Arizona next week, Trey McBride's dominance, the importance of James Conner production, Garrett Williams underrated, a long drought in Minnesota, whether there should be weather games, Wise Guy domination, and doggie Ozempic.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. JB Hixson Mary welcomes back JB Hixson as we tackle the biblical topic of wisdom, something the world could certainly use a lot more of. Isaiah 33:6 tells us, "Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, and the strength of salvation. The fear of the Lord is His treasure." Instability and chaos are not the product of wisdom, something that resides with God and is given to His people who desire it. Wisdom was present in creation, before anything was made. Solomon asked for wisdom and it was said that he was the wisest man who ever lived, and yet there was a huge disconnect and he did not finish well. When God gives us wisdom, what do we do with it? We are free moral agents and can accept or reject any of it. But when we desire to be wise and act wisely, we are a blessing, preserved and stable for those around us. The Bible has much to say on this topic in both testaments. The world may see us as fools for Jesus, but we know where we are headed when our days are accomplished, and so we seek to persuade men. Shameless plug for swag for our listeners/donors! https://www.redpillprints.com/stand-up-for-the-truth - Thanks for YOUR Support!

25 years ago, The Sopranos, the best television show ever created, premiered. This week, a new documentary called Wise Guy asks the question: how did a show considered so risky & uncommercial even get made? We're interviewing Wise Guy director Alex Gibney about that question, and about how stubborn lunatics like him and David Chase got to make the projects they wanted to make. 25 years ago, The Sopranos premiered on HBO and changed expectations of what TV could be. There's a new two-part documentary, called Wise Guy, about the making of the show, centering on the series creator and executive producer, David Chase. We're using that as an excuse to revisit our interviews with Chase, as well as Lorraine Bracco, who played Tony's psychiatrist, Dr. Melfi, and Michael Imperioli, who played Tony's impetuous nephew.
