Scott Eckstein shares his unique and diverse background creating solutions for an aging planet. Learn about his current roles as Managing Director of Active Living International and Chief Strategy Officer for CiminoCare Care, challenges curating quality care for his aging loved ones, and passion for educating the next generation of senior living providers. About Scott Scott Eckstein has over 30 years of diverse research, analysis, development, operations, and education experience in the senior living space. He has been directly involved in senior living projects throughout the United States, South and Central America, Europe, Africa, and Asia and specializes in providing strategic analysis, acquisitions, development, education, and operations advisory solutions for an aging planet. He is currently the Managing Director for Active Living International, an internationally focused senior living advisory firm, as well as Strategic Advisor for CiminoCare, a California-based middle market senior living operator. Eckstein's senior living experience began in the nascent days of senior housing. He has helped promote the creation of purpose built environments for senior wellness, lifestyles and care as well as having specialized in the creation and operation of a unique range of residential alternatives for the aging population worldwide, from active adult housing through the spectrum to memory care. Eckstein has held management positions at numerous senior living operators: Brookdale, Emeritus (now Brookdale), Aegis Living, Sunrise Senior Living and ARV Assisted Living (now Atria). In addition, he was also the Director of Business Development at WellAWARE Systems (now part of Best Buy), a pioneer in the senior tech space. Eckstein was also, the Director of the Senior Living Program at Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration and was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Senior Living Executive in Residence at the Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living in the Carson College of Business at Washington State University (in which whose formation he was actively involved.) Key Takeaways A career in senior living and aging services is impactful because of the ability to make a difference in people's lives for a few years rather than a few days in a hotel or resort. There are incredible opportunities, but the industries don't market themselves well. Active adult (55+) communities serve a younger age bracket needing minimal care. The category overlaps with wellness real estate and intergenerational housing. Independent living adds care services and attracts people in their late 70s and 80s. One of the biggest problems in the active adult housing market is residents don't want to leave as they age and need higher levels of care. In the United States, you can't push people out legally. The biggest challenges in senior living are related to management, leadership, training, and culture. They are intricately related. The silent generation and baby boomers are focused on wellness and technology, so senior living communities are incorporating Centers for Healthy Living with massage rooms, fitness equipment and aging-related retail. Most communities offer telehealth post covid, and some offer a tech concierge. The most important questions to ask an assisted living community before signing on the dotted line include the turnover of team members and the training they receive, the flexible (or lack of) of the dining options. Dining is the major issue beyond care.
Kiara Scott-Farmer became the head winemaker at Brookdale Estate near Paarl at the tender age of 26. Since then she has made an impression on the industry and a number of 'wine ous' whose palates I respect. Her journey from Mitchell's Plain to this gorgeous property set against the mountains overlooking Paarl is a fascinating one. We sat down for a chat with a view over the vineyards, and spoke about her wines, particularly the Mason Road Serendipity which is now my favourite rosé.Brookdale Estate On Instagram @a_table_inthecorner Cover image sketched by Courtney Cara Lawson All profile portraits by Russel Wasserfall unless otherwise credited
We finally did it everyone, our first episode in our new studio! There's still some work to be done, but we hope eventfully all of it will come together soon. But for now, we find ourselves at the Brookdale Lodge in Brookdale California. This one honestly ends up a little bit somber, so that stinks, but it's still a pretty good location, and a good one to break the new studio in wit, we'd say. Joe Regenbogen's long career as a schoolteacher led to writing later in life, and has encompassed a series of thoughtful, researched and diverse works. Appearing on The Sunbury Press Books Show, Regenbogen discusses his experiences in the classroom, which led to his first two books: Questioning History and Relearning History were targeted at those bored with traditional methods of teaching. His following works were equally fulfilling: The Boys of Brookdale tells the stories of veterans of World War II, while Making a Difference details the work of Irl Solomon, who dedicated his career to teaching in the schools of East St. Louis. From here, Regenbogen stepped into fiction with his first novel, Longs Peak, and his latest, Dying of the Light, available on Sunbury's Ars Metaphysica imprint. When Ethan's wife of 40 years passes away, he realizes the guiding light of his life is now extinguished. Haunted as well by a decision made decades before, Ethan takes a road trip to rediscover himself, and find a way to make things right, after so many years. A native of New Orleans, Joe Regenbogen taught in the city's schools before moving to St. Louis, where he now resides. In addition to writing, he has hosted talks and penned op-ed pieces for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

www.commsolutionsmn.com- The Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line just got a huge financial shot in the arm from the Federal government. It is only a 10-mile line, and $240 million alone is coming from the Feds. $120 million a piece have come from Ramsey and Washington counties. That is such a short route, and it stops in so few places. It will serve such a small segment of the population, but that doesn't stop them from building it anyways. All this in a time where more people are staying home for one reason or another. They are looking to open the Gold Line in 2024, and they want to create bus-only bridges and lanes. You'd think that Republicans might stand up and put a halt to all of this spending and forced redevelopment, but they aren't. They seem to join in with the Democrats and vote to spend, spend, spend. They know it's part of a bigger agenda, but they refuse to stand up for individuals and small businesses that are being bullied by large corporations and government working together. For instance, Rochester is looking to put together a 3-mile BRT line to please Mayo clinic, complete with a 13 acre Transit-Oriented Development site. Southwest Light Rail is 10 years over schedule and double under budget. Metro Transit is cutting routes, because they are so empty. We've got to stop this madness. We also discuss Wells Fargo's recent plan to consolidate office space. Corporations are entering into a new era where more people are working from home, AI is replacing jobs, and fewer people are working at all. Having all of these big office buildings are no longer tenable for big corporations, so what's next? We discuss. Have you checked out our Spotify playlist? At the beginning of each episode, Jason quotes some song lyrics that have to do with the subject matter of the podcast. Andrew never knows what they are, but now he can… and so can you! We've launched the Spotify playlist: “Community Solutions Music From the Podcast!” You can listen to Roundabout from Yes after listing to Episode 30 on Roundabouts… or kick back and enjoy a rocking playlist just for the thrill of it. Nick stops by today to catch up and have a chat. We talk about this prolific career, which will be coming up on 50 years, and all the changes that have happened in drug and alcohol treatment. Some of the changes for good, some for ehhhhh, and some driven by technology. . One specific topic we talk about is "Medication Assisted Treatments." And, for lack of a better term, maybe stigmas in Recovery Communities that existed, or fundamental definitions of recovery, that people in the last four decades had to loosen their grip on, and Nick experienced this firsthand of how these became life saving medications, and wider paths to recovery for individuals. We do a kind of a deep dive on MAT, and I learned a lot, that was the point of this podcast to "learn in real time". So I hope you enjoy the discussion. Support the show

There's a lot of different abilities we have and it's the pastor's job to remind you of that and recognize them and find ways to build those abilities and to put those into action. The goal of service is to edify Christ. The pastors need to remind members like you that you play a vital role. We need to recognize that we have a vital role in the church, the young and the old. Everyone has a role. We all need to recognize the we need each other and need to work together. We need to blend and work together. There's no stage as a church member where you are relegated to play no role, even if you're older and younger people have taken on your old roles.
