Standing Ovation, hosted by keynote speaker and emcee Jay Baer is where the very best public speakers reveal the secrets behind their greatest successes. In each episode, listeners hear a legendary on-stage story from a world-class speaker, and then hear Jay and his guest dissect and discuss that…
Unless you are just an extraordinary motivator on stage, at some point all speakers must provide EVIDENCE that the recommendations they are making to the audience actually work. Legendary speaker Zig Ziglar used to say that the similar situation is the best way to make a sale. Show me somebody in my scenario who has benefitted from this solution, and I’m more likely to buy it, right? Keynote speaker, author, entrepreneur, marketing consultant, and podcast host Mitch Joel includes a lot of evidence in his presentations, including a closing story about a man who was so successful in following Mitch’s advice, he changed his entire business model. You’ll hear all about this win in this episode of Standing Ovation! Some of the most effective and impactful stories from speakers are when they are the butt of the joke; when their own foibles and uncertainties make the speaker more relatable to the audience, who can envision themselves doing the exact same thing. She’s been around a construction site or two in her day, and knows how things work (which is what makes her signature elevator story even funnier). 20 great episodes, 20 fantastic speakers, 20 different perspectives from people at the top of their game. It’s time to go back to some of the Greatest Hits in Standing Ovation history – and no, this was not an easy task. As speakers, knowing what to say is sort of in our job description, but that’s easier for some topics than others. How about… a pen? It’s a topic that has no right to set the world alight, but Phil Jones has been leaving scorched stages across the globe for years with his story of a humble piece of stationery. How does he do it? What are the secrets to Phil’s storytelling skill? And what does he think every speaker should know about this business? Phil’s dedication to helping people see their worth and understand the value they bring – whether it’s to a relationship, a room, or an entire business – can be quite literally life-changing. I wouldn’t promise a life-changing experience to you, Clappers… but I can guarantee a standout episode of Standing Ovation. The best stories are all about connection. They connect with us and help us to connect the dots about something. When Colette Carlson tells the story of her father surviving a prisoner of war camp, all thanks to an unexpected moment of connection, you can imagine how many layers pile up and drive home the power of connecting. Colette tells beautiful stories with poise and passion – but how does she manage the prickly subject of speaking about her father’s intensely personal experience? When did she realize this story was a winner? And how has she learned to adapt it for the four different types of audiences she speaks to? All of these questions and plenty more are answered in the latest episode of Standing Ovation, Clappers. Prepare to feel moved – and connected – by Colette Carlson’s signature story. Find out about: How Colette’s story is enhanced by visuals, but not dependent on them How she gave herself permission to share a personal story What it means to embrace the applicability of your story Why there is a right way and wrong way to customize your story Whether Colette intentionally picks out stories from moments or just lets them happen What Colette thinks will help Clappers tell better stories Please Support Our Show Sponsors: content10x.com/standingovation (http://www.content10x.com/standingovation) to learn more! As speakers, we need our audiences to trust us. Nobody knows this better than David Horsager. But how does the world expert on trust in all kinds of relationships make his own audiences trust him when that’s the very topic he’s there to discuss? Well, there are a lot of ways this Hall of Fame speaker does it but – at the heart of it – he thinks it comes down to authenticity. David is my guest on Standing Ovation and I consider myself very lucky to have seen his ‘mutton busting’ signature story several times in person. To dive into its roots, its nuances, and its adaptability was a real bucket list moment for me. Clappers, I’m very proud to be able to share this episode with you. Entrepreneurs tend to be made by inspiring situations – a big idea, a moment of clarity, a story they tell at all the dinner parties. They don’t tend to be made by a letter from head office telling them they’re fired. Ramon Ray has a history of being an exception to the rule, though. And his story is fit for the stage, not for the dinner table. After losing his job with the UN, Ramon found inspiration where others would find desperation. He used that experience to pivot to a career in speaking and now, with trademark humor and passion, that story has become his signature. To have Ramon join me on Standing Ovation was a delight. For me, his brightness, vivacity, and mile-a-minute style makes him as entertaining as he is informative and, Clappers, I know you’re going to agree. Grab yourself a seat at the front, you’re going to want to hear what Ramon has to say. Find out about: When Ramon felt able and ready to share his now-signature story How Ramon chose his path as he was already walking it What the key differences are between speaking for free and for payment The approaches Ramon believes helped him become a better speaker over time How to find the balance between your classic lines and new material How to use your voice to great effect What a great audience looks like to Ramon Please Support Our Show Sponsors: content10x.com/standingovation (http://www.content10x.com/standingovation) to learn more! Signature stories come from all sorts of experiences, from the ordinary and mundane to the fantastical and unbelievable. But what if your story has nothing to do with you? What if you weren’t there or even alive when it happened? It might go against the grain for most speakers, but it’s never been a problem for Tamsen Webster. With a glittering career as a speaker, strategist, marketing maestro, TEDx executive producer and Weight Watchers leader, Tamsen has more than enough stories of her own to tell, but her most popular and powerful talk remains her signature story that starts 200 years ago. She’s been telling the story of Dr Ignaz Semmelweis to rapturous applause for years and, now, she’s telling it for Standing Ovation. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did, Clappers. Phil M Jones may be a bestselling author and sales and marketing specialist, but it’s his knowledge of stationery that seems to blow people away most often. With his signature story about a humble pen, Phil is living proof that good storytelling comes from delivery, context, and simplicity – not from bright lights and overproduction. Phil’s journey is like something out of a movie. Since cutting his teeth in business at just 14, washing cars and hiring a fleet of his friends to become something of a local legend, Phil has gone on to work for Premier League soccer clubs and grow a £240m property business. It’s no surprise, then, that Phil has a lot of stories to tell and an incredible knack for telling them. I’ve been listening to Phil speak for several years now and I’m always amazed at how well he can change up his story depending on where and to whom he is speaking. That’s not what I love most about Phil, though. Phil’s dedication to helping people see their worth and understand the value they bring – whether it’s to a relationship, a room, or an entire business – can be quite literally life-changing. What can we learn from five-year-olds? Probably some great opinions on the best flavor Pop Tart, but would you expect to end up with a life-changing lesson and the source of your signature story? That’s what happened when Neen James, my guest on this episode of Standing Ovation, was trying to have a cup of coffee in her friend’s house. It seems some of the best stories come from the most innocuous situations, but Neen’s story is far from ordinary. Neen has had an illustrious career in the boardroom and on the stage and her personal story spans several industries and borders. Now an attention and productivity coach, Neen knows all the tricks when it comes to capturing and keeping attention… Probably because she wrote the book on it! How do you tell the perfect story? It’s a question that’s plagued me and many Clappers for years. It’s also been renowned keynote speaker, Kindra Hall’s focus since she first started telling stories at 11 years old. Now, with a lifetime of experience and practice under her belt, she’s ready to share what she believes makes truly great storytelling. As President and Chief Storytelling Officer at Steller Collective, Kindra has spent years teaching people and businesses how to use storytelling to overcome their communication challenges. From working with Facebook and Berkshire Hathaway to delivering in-house training and being keynote speaker at global conferences, Kindra has helped countless people tell their story better. When you tell a story, how much energy do you put into it? Andrew Davis is a highly caffeinated speaker who brings a high wire style to every gig. He's also one of the world’s most prolific marketing and communications speakers. Before becoming an internationally acclaimed keynote speaker, Andrew worked for The Muppets in New York, wrote for Charles Kuralt and produced for NBC’s Today Show. He’s got an impressive track record but what makes my jaw drop about Andrew is his infectious enthusiasm and magnetic speaking style. Andrew has some great stories and he’s not one to shy away from telling a lengthy and complex story. Actually, one of his all-time gems is a story about meatloaf. That’s right Clappers, for the first time in the history of Standing Ovation, you’re going to hear a delicious signature story all about the wonder that is meatloaf. How well does your audience really know you? Do you ‘let them in,’ or do you remain on your professional speaker pedestal on a stage they can never reach? Vinh Giang is one of the most successful speakers in the world today and works incredibly hard on his craft. But what I admire the most about his work on stage is how he humanizes himself immediately. Believe it or not, ‘being human’ on stage is more challenging than you might think and sometimes it’s about not only sharing your own stories on stage but helping the audience to find their own stories too. Gifted with the ability to create authentic connections with his audience, Mark Scharenbroich is a Hall of Fame keynote speaker who began his career in a comedy troupe in the mid-1970s. His career catapulted to the stars when the Jostens award-winning film, “The Greatest Days of your Life…(so far)” featuring Mark was viewed by millions of high school students in the 1980s. Little did he know that the success of the film would lead him on the path to becoming one of the top-rated keynote speakers in America. To Mark, connections are everything and he has built a career speaking about how to create authentic connections in the workplace and between companies and customers. Mark’s signature story, ‘Nice Bike,’ is more than just a bunch of clever words strung together. It’s a metaphor and a memorable principle that, in Mark’s words, ‘helps create raving fans one customer at a time.’ Interestingly, Mike’s entire brand stems from his ‘Nice Bike’ story. He even wrote a book about it called (https://nicebike.com/about-the-book/) . In this episode of Standing Ovation, you’ll hear the Nice Bike story in all its glory. You’ll also discover where this incredible story came from, how it’s evolved and what’s next for this truly brilliant Hall of Fame keynote speaker. Find out about: The remarkable genesis story of Nice Bike Why you shouldn’t be afraid to be spontaneous and try new things How Mark applies the Nice Bike philosophy to different audiences An insight into Mark’s approach to preparing stories for the stage How specific lines in the Nice Bike story have evolved over time Why speakers need to be more open to coaching Techniques to paint a picture in the mind of your audience Why some speaker’s stories don’t land as powerfully as they hoped Quotes from the episode: “We all have two core needs: Number one, we need to belong. Number two, we all need to hear, ‘nice bike.’” “If you can find a signature story that people remember, that's relevant to them, and has a hook that’s memorable three days, three months or three years later - now you're cooking.” Connect with Mark Scharenbroich Website (https://nicebike.com/) Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/nicebikemark) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/nicebikemark/) LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-scharenbroich-sharon-brock-6b4009a/) YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/markscharenbroich) Twitter (https://twitter.com/NiceBIkeMark) 2 Key Questions What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given about the speaking business? “The obvious one that most people hear is to write a book. It helps you frame your writing but more than anything else, its value added. It helps with your negotiation. I’ll throw in 100 books for everybody in the audience and personally sign them. That helps from a negotiation standpoint and it adds value. My second piece of advice is to be open to coaching.” Who is your dream guest for Standing Ovation? “Jeanne Robertson is in a league all by herself: her storytelling, her humor, her heart, and her work ethic. I asked Jenny, “Does it drive you crazy when people steal your material? And she said, ‘Well, you know, number one, they can’t do it as well as I can. And number two, I'm constantly writing - I'm staying ahead of them.” Please Support Our Show Sponsors: The sponsor of this episode is Content 10x (https://www.content10x.com/) , the content repurposing experts who have a unique service just for speakers called Talk 10x, where they transform your presentation into a suite of unique content to help spread your message. To succeed in the speaking industry, you’ve got to be good at speaking, sure. But you also need to have a knack for branding. Owning your intellectual property is a huge part of success for speakers and nobody knows or does this better than Hall of Fame keynote speaker, Sally Hogshead. She’s a thought leader, dynamic speaker, New York Times bestselling author and a world-class creator of advertising. She’s so good that her advertising work has been on exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. If that’s not proof of someone’s success, I don’t know what is. If that wasn’t enough, Sally has been awarded the #1 Global Brand Guru in 2016 and 2019 and was inducted into the Word of Mouth Marketing Hall of Fame. After helping over a million people discover their personal brand, Sally is still blazing a trail for herself in the speaking industry and beyond. If you don’t know who Sally is yet, let me jog your memory. Speakers and meeting planners worldwide are familiar with a premise she created that has become somewhat of a speaking legacy and it consists of just five words: Different is better than better. Sally often introduces this research-backed premise to her audiences with a vividly told case study that combines intriguing insights, witty humor, and booze. You’ll hear this story on this episode of Standing Ovation where Sally graces the stage and shares how her Jägermeister story has aged like fine wine. Find out about: Sally’s Jägermeister story and why being different is better than better The hilarious origin story of Sally’s Jägermeister story Why you have to identify your advantages as a speaker and focus your presentation around it Why it’s futile to try to be ‘the speaker for all audiences’ What separates a great keynote speaker from a world-class keynote speaker How to use the proximity effect to create a bonding experience with the audience The importance of avoiding events that aren’t the right fit for you or your personal brand Quotes from the episode: “When we say something that’s slightly shocking and provocative, but it's also about to lead into a highly strategic story with a clear deliverable - It bonds you to the audience.” - @SallyHogshead (https://twitter.com/SallyHogshead) “The higher your fee goes, the more the client is basically buying an insurance policy.” - @SallyHogshead (https://twitter.com/SallyHogshead) “Just as you need to be a right fit for an audience, an audience needs to be a right fit for you.” - @SallyHogshead (https://twitter.com/SallyHogshead) Important Links & Mentions Sally’s website (sallyhogshead.com) (https://www.sallyhogshead.com/) How to Fascinate (howtofascinate.com) (http://howtofascinate.com/) Connect with Sally Hogshead Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/hogshead) LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/hogshead) Twitter (https://twitter.com/SallyHogshead) YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/SallyHogshead) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/sallyhogshead/?hl=en) Please Support Our Show Sponsors: The sponsor of this episode is Content 10x (https://www.content10x.com/) , the content repurposing experts who have a unique service just for speakers called Talk 10x, where they transform your presentation into a suite of unique content to help spread your message. What does it take to be a professional motivational speaker? Courage? Yes, probably. Confidence? Definitely. But above all of that, to be a successful motivational speaker, you need to be able to tell motivational stories. Jim Cathcart is a Hall of Fame keynote speaker who started his career repossessing log trucks in the mountains of northern Arkansas. It wasn’t until he heard speaker and author, Earl Nightingale, on the radio in 1972, that he decided to take a complete U-turn and become a professional speaker. Since then, Jim has built quite a reputation for himself as one of the most recognized and highly sought after motivational and sales speakers in the world. He is the author of 16 books including the famous, Relationship Selling, which has transformed the entire world of sales. Jim has given more than 3,000 presentations worldwide and his motivational stories have moved countless people to change their lives for the better. One of Jim’s best (and my personal favorite) stories is about a memorable employee of a fast food restaurant. Chances are, you’ve heard of this restaurant before and you’ve probably had lunch there this week. Listen in to hear the story about Grandma, where it came from, how it’s evolved and what’s next for this Hall of Fame speaker. Find out about: The surprising story about Grandma and the importance of providing memorable moments for your customers How the Grandma story has evolved and survived 40 years of professional speaking How Jim can change the lesson of the story by altering the application The problem with depending on ‘sight gags’ in your presentation How to strategically withhold information from the audience in a way that builds suspense How Jim got into the professional speaking business How to find, curate and adapt better stories Quotes from the episode: “If you're telling a story, you’ve got to create your characters visually in the mind of your audience.” - @jimcathcart (https://twitter.com/jimcathcart?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Eembeddedtimeline%7Ctwterm%5Eprofile%3Ajimcathcart&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fspeaking.com%2Fspeakers%2Fjim-cathcart%2F) “Everybody’s got stories. I was at a conference in Phoenix and I had the privilege of spending a two-hour lunch with just him and one other person. And, he just he was holding court. You know, Bill was a master storyteller, one of the best I've ever met in my entire life. The impression I got was, first, you need to enjoy it, you really ought to let yourself get into this and have fun with it for heaven's sakes, and then look at it afterwards and make it better.” Who is your dream guest for Standing Ovation? “Jeanne Robertson must be on your show. When most speakers take the stage, they do exactly what’s expected of them. A great speech, followed by an eruption of cheer from the audience and hopefully, a standing ovation. However, not every speaker plays by the ‘rules’ of speaking and Scott Stratten is someone who, I think is fair to say, believes that speaking shouldn’t be bounded by so many rules. His signature rebel style on stage entices audiences and brings them to the edge of their seats as he encourages them to embrace ‘the age of disruption.’ Scott is a Hall of Fame speaker and although many people may know him as the ‘guy with the man bun’, he has built an enviable career out of pulling no punches and taking no shortcuts. He’s one of the most successful disruption speakers in the world and is often referred to as the ‘ultimate sales and marketing truth slayer.’ Scott’s stories get people laughing, thinking and perhaps more importantly, doing. When he is asked to do a keynote, he holds nothing back and never fails to deliver. Perhaps one of his best stories and certainly one that sends me into a fit of laughter is his famous story about Millennials. Well, I say story, but it’s really more of an impressive rant that forces his audience to question the Millennial bias and whether or not they deserve all of the negativity they get from older generations. Find out about: Hear Scott’s story that reveals the truth about Millennials How Scott came up with ‘The Millennial Rant’ Tips for timing your story right so you don’t run over in time or cut it too short Why scripts and rehearsals aren’t always necessary The importance of giving the client what they want Why Scott selects certain creative choices when presenting on stage Why Scott is never afraid to challenge the audience Connect with Scott Stratten Website (http://www.unmarketing.com/speaking/) Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/UnMarketing/) LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/unmarketing/?originalSubdomain=ca) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/unmarketing/?hl=en) Twitter (https://twitter.com/unmarketing?lang=en) Please Support Our Show Sponsors: The sponsor of this episode is Content 10x (www.content10x.com/standingovation) , the content repurposing experts who have a unique service just for speakers called Talk 10x, where they transform your presentation into a suite of unique content to help spread your message. What are you doing to exceed your customers’ expectations? Lisa Ford asks this question at the end of her eye-opening story about the importance of going beyond good service to exceed the customer’s expectations. Lisa is a speaker with over 20 years of experience and is one of the world's leading experts on customer service. She has a gift for helping companies, big or small, build a customer-focused culture and often speaks internationally on topics of leadership, team issues and of course, customer service. Everyone has a story to tell and some of us are fortunate enough to share our stories on stage in front of a live audience. My new podcast, Standing Ovation, is a show about stories. Stories that move us, inspire us and drive us to take action and change the trajectory of our lives. Let’s face it, not all stories are great stories. But, every once in a while, I stumble across a story that is so moving and so powerful that I just have to share it with my audience of Clappers (that’s you guys!). So, in this first episode of Standing Ovation, you’ll hear one such story from Scott McKain, a Hall of Fame keynote speaker who has delivered thousands of presentations across six continents. Scott’s tapestry of speaking experiences has landed him on stages all over the world including being booked by the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, for an event on the White House lawn with the President in attendance. If that’s not impressive for a speaker who began his career when he was just a teenager in a small town in Indiana, I don’t know what is. Scott is renowned for his storytelling ability and speaks a lot about distinction and helping his audiences understand how to stand out in today's crowded business environment. But, perhaps his most famous story of all is about Taxi Terry, a curious cab driver who uses a personal database to improve customer relations and provide his passengers with the best cab experience of their lives. Find out about: The curious story of Taxi Terry and the importance of providing excellent customer service Why signature stories need constant revision How the Taxi Terry story has evolved over time What makes signature stories have a real impact How Scott makes the Taxi Terry story relatable to his audience How Scott has managed to inject comedy in his story What makes the Taxi Terry story work so well regardless of where it’s told Important Links & Mentions Scott McKain’s website (https://scottmckain.com/) Taxi Terry’s website (http://www.taxiterry.com/) Connect with Scott McKain Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/iconicbusinessbook) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/scottmckain/) LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottmckain) Twitter (https://twitter.com/scottmckain) YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/scottmckain) Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/scottmckain) Please Support Our Show Sponsors: The sponsor of this episode is Content 10x (www.content10x.com/standingovation) , the content repurposing experts who have a unique service just for speakers called Talk 10x, where they transform your presentation into a suite of unique content to help spread your message.
