Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Dr. Ron Friedman is an award-winning psychologist who has served on the faculty of the University of Rochester and has consulted for political leaders, nonprofits, and many of the world's most recognized brands. His first book, The Best Place to Work, was selected as an Inc. Magazine Best Business Book of the Year. His most recent book is called, Decoding Greatness: How the Best in the World Reverse Engineer Succes. Notes: When Michael Dell was 16 years old, his parents bought him an Apple Computer. And they were horrified by what he did next... He took it apart to learn how to build it. He was curious. Excellent performers don't passively observe. They take action. When you encounter an awesome memo or speech, try to identify why it was remarkable... And then see how you can implement what you've learned to do the same. Nature vs. Nurture? "It's both." The stories we've been told are wrong: That it takes talent + practice. That's only part of the story. It's thinking in formulas and becoming a collector. "Identify what works and turn it into a template for yourself." A presidential speechwriter like Jon Favreau (President Obama's speechwriter) would study the greatest presidential speeches in history as he wrote... Reverse outlining - Take a finished product and reduce it to small paragraphs. Read the transcript and identify the emotion. There are six main narratives for main characters... The analysis comes after collection. Identify what's extraordinary... And then create a template. Create metrics and rate your work. "Measurement begets improvement." This requires a mindset of curiosity (like Michael Dell) Think in "blueprints." How does this work? How do I recreate it? President Obama initially was not a good politician... He observed pastors at churches. He started using repetition and pausing for effect to improve his ability to give compelling speeches. How are Chipotle and Starbucks similar? "They think in blueprints." The creators of Chipotle knew that people love burritos, but there wasn't a fast way to get great ones. They created a blueprint. The leaders at Starbucks modeled their buildings after Italian coffee bars. It's "pattern-thinking." Tom Petty didn't watch Bruce Springsteen because he felt they were too similar. He didn't want to outright copy him. Ron reads fiction to help him become a better storyteller and use cliffhangers in his non-fiction writing. Visualization - Why does it not work? "It can give you temporary satisfaction and lead to you not working as hard for the goal. You feel as if you already achieved it." "Visualize the process instead of the outcome." The UCLA Study: Visualize the process Practice in the past - Be reflective, use a journal, look back at previous entries Deliberate practice - It needs to be hard and you need feedback from an expert. Practice in different locations. Novelty is important. This allows you to be more present in the moment... Sign up for improv classes Find a hobby that has an overlap with what you do (if you're a manager, join toastmasters to become a better public speaker) Tinder algorithms - They predict who you'll find attractive. It looks for commonalities... The takeaway? Start a collection intake engine. Curate what that contains and what you exclude. Ritz Carlton obsesses over metrics. They understand that what gets measured gets managed. They optimize for their net promoter score (NPS). The links that are drivers to outcomes... For Ron, he needs to do cardio to get into creative mode. To do great cardio, he needs great sleep. To get great sleep, he needs regular massages. It's a chain of events to get the optimal outcome. Figure out what that is for you. How to give a great Ted Talk? Ron reverse engineered the most watched talk... Here is what he found: Ken Robinson used one fact He had lots of anecdotes There were LOTS of jokes (and they were funny) The storytelling drives the whole talk Taking risks -- Ron learned this from his grandmother and dedicates his work to her. He was born in Israel and moved to New York when he was 7. His grandmother would go door to door selling the services of her husband (he was a dentist). "The more risks we take, the more likely we are to succeed." Life/Career advice: Take more risks Optimize for your relationships... And your spouse is the most important relationship Apply to be part of my Leadership Circle

Ron Porter is the wine and spirits director for Andy's Local Market which is compromised of three stores in Marin County. He is a certified sommelier and has been in the retail wine and food business for 45 years. For 10 years, he has had his own business in San Francisco which featured wine and food gift basket delivery. Big Takeaways Estimates are done purely by averages when it comes to pricing a bar. Some people drink more some drink less. And when coming up with that number, that is taken into consideration. For Ron, that averages to about a half a bottle of wine, or 5 oz of spirits, or 1 bottle of beer per person. Have a variety of wine options for different palates. For red wine, keep it at medium bodied. Go with bottles of beer at weddings. Kegs are delicious but they often lead to a lot of waste. Instead of sparkling wine or champagne, Ron recommends Cava! It's light, lower cost, and quite delicious. Vodka is king in the wedding bar. Main spirits are vodka, and gin. Brandy is starting to come back. Plan in advance! If you are getting your own alcohol, remember you will need to put it on ice at least 4 hrs before. Get the alcohol days early, and go from there. Don't try last minute. This next show is deeply personal, because I have the treasured opportunity to interview one of my oldest and dearest friends, a man who was literally given up for dead by the medical establishment, and yet who lived to tell a harrowing story of devastation, faith, hard work, and eventually, restoration. Ron Frappier was at the peak of his game, one of the top five corporate security lawyers in the country. Then, in a split second, everything changed. This show is more than just about enjoying peak life experiences — it’s about finding meaning in life. For Ron, that meant defying every prognosis given by his doctors, and doing the hard, hard work it takes to come back from a traumatic brain injury. It meant finding that sacred balance between accepting “what is” while at the same time determining, with all you heart, strength and soul, to make things different. If that sounds oxymoronic, it is, because that’s “God logic” and not “human logic.” If you, like me and Ron, are in the second half of your life and struggling with all the challenges that come with it, then you will want to listen to this interview with my good friend and champion Ron Frappier. I guarantee it will leave you inspired.
Welcome back to another exciting installment of Cinemasters of the Universe! In Episode 9 we see the Rise of the Cinemasters as they change things up a bit with the visual aesthetic. What Adam lacks in overall appeal and personality, Ron more than makes up for in technical ability and general likability. Our heroes kick off this episode with another round of “WHAAAAT??? You haven’t seen _______”. This time Ron is going over his experience with Tom Hanks and his crazy “Bachelor Party” antics, pre “Man with One Red Shoe” fame. Adam is giving us the low down on a nitty gritty cop flick with Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider called “The French Connection”. You’ll have to see what these fellas have to say about their films of bygone era and whether or not you should check them out too. Then we get into our main event as always. The boys will be covering the films of SNL fame. This doesn’t just include the movies that have been specifically produced by Saturday Night Live but rules that Ron and Adam arbitrarily, but thoughtfully, put in place to determine an “SNL Alum” flick. For Ron it was any film with at least two SNL Alumni members in predominant roles. Adam skewed it similarly but his rules were any film that included at least 3 SNL cast members, former or present. To avoid overlap and give you a true top 10 from our Cinemasters, they each concocted a list greater than 5 so they could pivot on a dime and give you, the viewer, just what you needed. Finally we round out this episode with another installment of “Who Played it Better?” where Ron and Adam challenge each other to recast a film to see if they are up to the challenge of executing an award winning casting call or not. The boys really stuck it to each other with this round and it will be compelling to see how each of them handles it. I’m not going to tell you what they picked for each other, you’ll simply have to tune in and see how things unfold in this episode of CINEMASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE!!!

Today we are with the Yosemite climber Ron Kauk. Ron pushed the limits of climbing in Yosemite during the ascendance of the sport and paved the way to some extent of what we see now inspiring climbers of our generation Tommy Caldwell, Alex Honnold to create the next level of what is possible on the soaring granite walls of Yosemite and the wider world. Chris and I met Ron 3 years ago by chance. He was giving a talk in Yosemite on the few days we were there and as we sat there listening to his ideas of nature, how it has changed and what climbing has taught him about how to be a complete human we turned to each other and said we have got to spend a bit more time with Ron. WE hung out with him and featured him in Issue 1 alongside the lessons from Yosemite which we learned in our 3 day trip.Well that was 3 years ago and on our again impromptu stop of in Yosemite we sent him a text to see if he was around for a coffee. He was and we spent the rest of the day talking from daylight to darkness and wished we had recorded it!There is a shared connection when we talk to Ron, climbing brought us together but it is how he sees the world as a result of climbing, what he has experienced in terms of highs and lows that we hold space for because it is an opportunity to learn and share wisdom from someone who has been up to the top, seen the view, come down and then asked himself what the next step is. For Ron it became a journey of giving back through Sacred Rok the educational program sharing his experience with the younger generations to connect with their inner wisdom. Serving others and giving back being a practice we hear regularly from the people we sit with. The big takeaway for me is the importance of rites of passage, how we have to pay our dues, work through the levels and the instability that is often a result of hacking our way through the process, becoming our best takes time and practice and the more you practice with purpose the more progress will be made. Culture, instagram, the media pushes the idea of always being the best and yet rarely talks about what it takes to get there and the stages that the idols pass through in order to achieve their status. There are so many parallels with the conversations we have had with Jamie Wheal, Tony Molina and Arthur Joseph, Brian Mackenzie and beyond that strengthens the case for the essential principles of being a complete human, mainly that there are steps to take and if you skip the steps you will most likely have to return to take them so best to be fearless and take them as they come.Enjoy the conversation with Ron, let us know your thoughts and it would be great if you follow us on our youtube channel weMove world and our instagram page @wemovemagazine.

Hello and welcome to seventh episode of Fanboy Nation’s Toon-In-Talk, your rendezvous for animation interviews. Mortal Kombat X is the latest game in the legendary fighting series and Whitney scored a interview with the voice of the villainous Quan Chi. Ronald M. Banks is the extreme opposite of the villain roles (meaning he’s a swell guy) he tends to get cast for in his extensive musical and theater career. In this interview, he discusses his journey into voice over and how he plans to grow his career. Show Notes Ron’s famous voice over role as Quan Chi in the Mortal Kombat series: Mortal Kombat X, Mortal Kombat, and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. He also played Jafar in the Aladdin Musical Spectacular at Disney California Adventure. On stage, he is most famous for playing the king in the King and I as well as Sweeny Todd in Sweeny Todd. Ron loves playing the bad guy and finds it very cathartic. Ron describes Quan Chi as a sorcerer, who is evil but is not an epic villain. He used to be a gamer and his game of choice was World of Warcraft, but he found that he needed to devout more time to real life. When he voiced the role of Quan Chi, Ron is still learning what the character’s role in the game is. As Jafar, Ron understands the menacing sorcerer’s mind quite well. Whitney got the reference right (though it’s sweat, not silver blood). The game has over the top violence and he thinks players will find it more humorous than gory. Ron thinks that when CGI gets too real it won’t appeal to people. He’s also been in some movies: No Connection and Sentimental Over You. For Ron, when he acts on TV or in movies, he has to back off with his voice. He’s used to projecting his voice. Some of the challenges Ron faces is the newness of being a voice actor and keeping a show fresh when he’s on stage. It’s important for actors on stage to be in the moment to keep their role fresh for the audience. Ron is a vocal coach and he shares some advice on keeping your voice strong and healthy. Whitney wants to know some funny theater stories and Ron reveals a whopper. Both share their thoughts on Andrew Lloyd Webber. SPOILER ALERT! Ron explains Quan Chi’s fate. They discuss the wonders of technology and the trouble of finding silence in a house. (Whitney recorded this episode in her closet.) Voice acting is a very competitive market. During the day, Ron works as a Disney guest relations host, he teaches voice, and works with kids.

You may recognize Ron Douglas from the first season of Discovery Channel’s Blue Collar Backers. Ron was offered five more seasons, but realizing how much time it took away from his family, he turned it down. He continues to help people on a more personal level. Ron has been an entrepreneur since he was 24 and started then sold several companies. For Ron, it all happened one day by accident. He came up very short for payday and needed some money. He took an extra job where he learned how to make money without having to have a boss or a job. He wrote about his love for the art of creating businesses in his book Six Figures in Six Months.
