When the world seems so deeply divided, how can we step across barriers and preconceived notions to build avenues for conversation and collaboration? In this episode, Kaitlin Yarnall, Chief Storytelling Officer at National Geographic, argues that storytelling could hold the key. National Geographic has become synonymous with eye-opening, awe-inspiring, perspective-shifting storytelling. They have been honing the craft for well over a century, telling stories that have helped to alter perceptions, build coalitions, pass legislation, and ignite movements. Kaitlin shares the components for effective storytelling, from the narrative elements to tapping into the right emotions and having a clear understanding of your audience and how to reach them. At S2G, we consider storytelling to be one of the key ingredients for the climate transition. This episode so beautifully illuminates the potential of storytelling and how to tap into its power to move audiences and bring more people into the conversation.Key Topics: Tapping Into Awe Instead of Fear: Kaitlin shares some of the research behind which emotions drive people to action. While fear, shame, and anger can motivate someone to act in the short term, emotions like awe, wonder, and hope can get people to think and act differently in the long term. Translating Science to Storytelling: According to Kaitlin, we need to bring characters into science stories, get creative with communicating scale, and maybe even do a little reframing of the scientific method. Knowing your audience: As Kaitlin says, “The audience is everything.” It is not enough to say you are creating something “for the public.” We have to have a very clear understanding of who we're speaking to and what they will relate to. Communicating about Climate: Kaitlin has a very simple message for those of us trying to communicate and educate about climate: We have to try harder. Polar bears don't move everyone. We have to reframe the conversation based on what different communities care about. Storytelling Tips and Tricks: Find the visuals, know the audience, and don't forget the humor. Stories that Stick (ft. Kindra Hall)A master storyteller on what works, what matters, and what doesn't work or matterOPENING QUOTE:“We get to know people through their stories, and they're asking themselves in that moment as you come out on stage: "I'm spending the next hour with this person, do I like them? Do I connect with them? Do I feel like they're related to me in any way? Do I trust them?”-Kindra Hall:GUEST BIO:Kindra Hall is the best selling author of Stories That Stick: How Storytelling Can Captivate Customers, Influence Audiences, and Transform Your Business. Kindra is one of the busiest keynote speakers on the scene, helping global brands better communicate the value of their company, their products and their individuality through strategic storytelling. She's also the Chief Storytelling Officer at SUCCESS Magazine, where she shares the inspiring, often untold stories of achievers like Daymond John, Deepak Chopra, James Altucher and Misty Copeland in print and on the podcast SUCCESS Stories with Kindra Hall.Links:WebsiteFacebookTwitterLinkedInInstagramYouTubeCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[6:00] - The Four Key Elements of a Great StoryKindra's secret sauce for amazing storytellingKindra lists four key components of great storytelling— First, they need an identifiable character. It can be you or someone else, but it needs to be someone your audience can identify with.Next, a story needs authentic emotion. It doesn't have to make your audience cry, but it needs to make them feel something. Third— a story needs a moment. It's a point in the story where the listener can “come in and sit right there next to you,” experiencing what you or the main character experienced. Finally, a story needs specific details. This adds to the image your audience is creating in their minds, making your story more vivid and impactful.[14:48] - Intros & EndingHow Kindra thinks about two of the most important parts of a keynoteWhen it comes to intros, Kindra has a strong stance: “Always start with the story.” That's how your audience will get to know you, much more than listing out your credentials or resume. As far as endings, Kindra ties all the concepts she's gone on to discuss back to that original story. It brings everything full-circle, and helps solidify the concepts discussed because they tie back to her original narrative. This leaves a lasting impression and ties emotion and feelings to the intellectual side of what's been discussed.[22:36] - Kindra's Storytelling HeroesInfluential names you may not knowKindra lists her mentor, Donald Davis, as one of her storytelling heroes. She cites his traditional storytelling chops and ability to make life's everyday moments have power and value as one of her biggest inspirations. Kindra also lists the opening story of Glennon Doyle's book Untamed, despite its status as being considered “overhyped.” It clearly struck a chord with a wide range of people— the hallmark of a great story.[29:16] - Kindra's Storytelling No-NosTaking a stand against emotional manipulationTwo things Kindra feels strongly about in stories and keynotes— don't cry, and don't tell stories that have no purpose other than to make your audience cry. Becoming emotional onstage might feel like it will convey vulnerability and impact, but the truth is that it takes the focus off your audience and puts it on you. You're meant to be the deliverer of the message, not the central star of the message.Meanwhile, Kendra says that while stories should be emotionally resonant, they also need to tie back to your message on an intellectual level. Ask yourself what the purpose of a story you share actually is— if it doesn't go any deeper than “making the audience cry,” cut it out.[32:52] - More than an OvationKindra's real measure of a great keynoteMany speakers measure success in standing ovations. But Kindra uses another metric. Does anyone come up to her after the keynote and ask to discuss its message with her further? Does anyone speak to her about speaking at another event? These are signs that she's made a lasting impression after leaving the stage and concluding the event. That's the true measure of keynote success.RESOURCES:[23:02] About Donald Davis[24:02] Untamed, by Glennon Doyle[24:40] New York Times Metropolitan DiaryFollow Kindra Hall:WebsiteFacebookTwitterLinkedInInstagramYouTubeFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. Though he's adamant about using the Dust to improve life, not destroy it, corporate raiders and the military have other ideas. They want to weaponize Brandt's nanites. Suddenly, everything Keira has worked for is in jeopardy. Exposed to the worst humanity has to offer, she and Elly must fight to use this newfound tech for good and keep it out of the wrong hands…before it's too late. Kindra Hall discussed the power of storytelling to create change, expand influence, and inspire growth in business and in life. Kindra sheds light on how stories influence your daily life, your career/business, your relationships, and the people around you. She also gives advice and strategies for overcoming the negative stories that are holding you back from being your best self. Choose your story, change your life. How can stories and storytelling impact your growth as a human and even the growth of your business? They can either slow it down or speed it up… and in this episode, we're diving into that head first! Kindra Hall is a keynote speaker, best-selling author, and the go-to expert for storytelling in business and beyond. Kindra is also the Chief Storytelling Officer at Success Magazine where she shares the inspiring, often untold, stories of achievers like Daymond John, Deepak Chopra, James Altucher, and Misty Copeland in print and on the podcast, Success Stories with Kindra Hall. Follow Kindra Hall @kindrahall Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning Key Highlights We become our stories. We're made up of stories. What does that mean? Listen in as Kindra breaks it down and shares a fun exercise you can do to see how many stories you're made up of and how those stories have shaped you. Fear, especially fear of failure, often comes from the stories we've subconsciously held onto for our entire lives. This leads to inaction, stagnancy, and a lack of growth. How can we overcome this? If we look at what influences us, there might be a story behind why we're influenced by those things… Listen in to hear Chase and Kindra's thoughts on this intriguing phenomenon. Kindra speaks on whether or not we need to be mindful of how our stories passively influence others. If you're struggling with the emotions from old stories and the struggle is keeping you stuck, ask yourself: Are there stories since that time that exhibit the characteristics that I want to become, that I'm working towards, or that I'm proud of? Show yourself the receipts to prove that you have evolved from those old stories. This week is a blast as we explore some very creative business strategies with Tony Gnau. Content marketing is a tool that Tony relies on heavily to add value to his customers while also building his credibility and drawing in new clients. We look into taking the time to audition your clients to find ones that align with your core values and then working those clients into a retainer system that creates consistent income and a mutually beneficial relationship between you and your client! Key Takeaways Use quality content marketing to set yourself up as an expert in your field and draw in quality clients. Be proactive to think about both the short term AND the long term strategy or your life and business. Use the retainer business model to create consistent income with clients you want to work with. Make sure you are clear on your core values and audition clients to find ones who mesh with those values. About Tony Gnau Tony Gnau is the Founder and Chief Storytelling Officer at T60 Productions. I'm back with best-selling author and the former Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine, Kindra Hall, to walk through her personal values, motives, and habits in the key areas of life fulfillment so we can hear what has driven and does drive her to lead us in the stories we write about our lives, and design a life that fulfills her. In episode 1042, the longest show I've ever published, Kindra and I talked about…story. Specifically the message in her new book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life. Here we go behind the scenes into the ever evolving story she is writing in her current life. The Cliff Notes I think you'll want to hear more about, regarding her spirituality she pondered that her purpose is easy when she understands it, but hard when she doesn't. A key for her health and wellness is to consider the most essential uses of her time. On mental health, Kindra said she is consistently paying attention to what is working, and what isn't. And being aware that what did work might not anymore. In work and career we got to talking about our propensity to feel we need to put in a solid week, 40 hours or whatever, when so often, as she said, "I can create magic in only 10." We ended on achievements and I think you'll be curious to hear how Kindra views her own story regarding what she wants to achieve, as she admits that she's currently aware the big achievements so often did not provide as much fulfillment as the achievements she wasn't even looking for, like yesterday's testimonial from a teacher about her child's character. Kindra is the 191st guest I've had on my show and is one of the most thoughtful and interesting conversationalist I've experienced. We all wake up every day and participate in what we feel is simply our reality. Yet it's truly a storyline we've created, or accepted, or feel we are forced to live and in that case, agreed with and submitted to. For you, which is it? This is not some hoodoo guro motivation that life is make-believe and we simply decide to have it be something else better. That is offensive. But it is interesting how we live our daily lives and we let things like marriage, children, getting hired or fired from a job, an injury or even a windfall of money, totally change our story. If that's the case, can't we not only do things to change our stories for the better, but can we also change our perspective of our stories right away and make things better? And I have with me, Kindra Hall. Kindra is the best-selling author and the former Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine, whose work and research teaches individuals and brands to harness and leverage the power of their stories. Her first book, Stories that Stick debuted at #2 on the Wall Street Journal Bestseller List and Forbes said it “may be the most valuable business book you read." Inc.com said her newest book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life is "the business book you need to read in 2022." I however read this new book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life and felt it was a must-have conversation for…all of us. As humans. And what follows is my longest interview to date because the topics are so profoundly important. Find her book anywhere and connect with Kindra at kindrahall.com. In this episode of Start With A Win, Adam introduces President and Chief Storytelling Officer at Steller Collective, Kindra Hall. Steller Collective is a consulting firm “focused on the strategic application of storytelling to today's communication challenges.” Kindra's interest in storytelling sparked at a young age during a family vacation road trip after listening to a storytelling tape by the National Storytelling Festival. She reflects how this experience unified her family, despite different age gaps and interests. Since then, she transformed her passion for storytelling into a career. Kindra explains how storytelling is co-creative, differentiating it from other forms of communication. This co-creative process enables people to create their own versions of relatability, creating a shared experience with the interpersonal connection. She elaborates how this applies in business—people say yes to the story of the products or services rather than its features. Kindra's book, Stories That Stick: How Storytelling Can Captivate Customers, Influence Audiences, and Transform Your Business, provides insights into why storytelling is an effective business strategy, including a framework for creating compelling stories. Kindra addresses the #1 common mistake for storytelling in business—people try to convey big concepts, resulting in vague stories. This approach prevents opportunities to connect with others emotionally. Instead of persuasive language, Kindra suggests focusing on one moment. This moment should address a person's hopes, struggles, or fears, producing a story that reveals a solution people can resonate with and understand. Paying attention to your audience is key. Consider what you want your audience to think, feel, know, or act after engaging with your story. Having clarity of the objective and understanding your audience will guide you into the story you should tell. When trying to convince someone or alter their behavior we often lead with facts and figures. Ironically, that might be the LEAST effective strategy for inspiring real, lasting change. Rather, we should utilize the most powerful persuasive ability humans possess: storytelling. You might roll your eyes or reminisce on bedtime stories as a kid, but good stories aren't just for fun and laughs- they can quite literally capture audiences, move people to action, and catalyze change. Better yet, storytelling is a skill and just by understanding/utilizing a few simple “ingredients” we have the ability to make our communication that much more convincing. Today's guest, Kinda Hall is a professional storyteller (yes, you read that right!) who teaches leaders, executives and entrepreneurs across countless industries to harness and leverage the power of their stories. Her book, Stories that Stick debuted at #2 on the Wall Street Journal Bestseller List and Forbes said it “may be the most valuable business book you read." In 2020, she became the Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine where she interviews icons like Deepak Chopra and Misty Copeland in an effort to hear and share their stories of success. She is based in New York City with her husband and two children. On today's episode we discuss: The 4 essential components to a good story and how to implement them Why every professional needs to become an expert storyteller When to share personal stories and knowing where to draw the line How to create powerful stories from the small moments in life Connect with Kindra: Via her books: Stories That Stick and Choose Your Story, Change Your Life (pre-order) Via Instagram: @kindrahall Via Twitter: @kindramhall As Kindra knows and shared, these days, “It's not enough to differentiate, you have to be uniquely relevant.” Speaking of, there's just 1 WEEK LEFT to sign up for our most popular online workshop! The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Ep #329: Kindra Hall Full show notes can be found at www.LearningLeader.com Kindra Hall is President and Chief Storytelling Officer at Steller Collective, a consulting firm focused on the strategic application of storytelling to today’s communication challenges. Kindra is one of the most sought after keynote speakers trusted by global brands to deliver presentations that inspire teams and individuals to better communicate the value of their company, their products and their individuality through strategic storytelling. Kindra is a former Director of Marketing and VP of Sales. Her much anticipated book, Stories That Stick, will be published on September 24, 2019. Notes: Why is storytelling so important? It's how we learn, how we connect Your team needs to know you, and like you (stories do that when you tell them well) You can learn breadth/depth of a person through a story A story is NOT: A bullet point resume A list of information Stating the mission statement The objective A story = The small moments when mission is in a specific place and time... When something happens. The four components of a story: Place and time: "a moment" Identifiable characters - must see people Authentic emotion - Relatable to audience Specific details - Draw audience in to the co-creative process Opening story of her book: In Slovenia at Thanksgiving: The power of the sales clerk's ability to tell a story compelled Kindra and her husband to buy Why did the story work? It drew you in with powerful moments and emotion It had suspense - "I want to know what's going to happen..." People will give you their attention when you're telling a compelling story It brought them to places through vivid descriptions How to better start a meet at work: First, realize it's a skill you can develop Take a step back, think of the higher level message -- "What's the overall theme?" "When have I seen this in action?" Why was it compelling? Make a list of nouns: People in life you've had to communicate with (bosses, friends, colleagues) Find moments and stories from those people... Understand the characters of the story Think: "What do I want my audience to think, feel, know, and do at the end of this story?" Use the "bystander story" - Stories of others that you make yours Remember the goal is to create connection This becomes your story... Through your eyes How to handle price conversations? Move from dollars and cents to value -- "They need to feel the pain of if they didn't have this thing I'm selling." Our decisions are not always based on logic, they are based on ideas Use the "Get To Know You Document" Why joining The Learning Leader Circle is a good idea
Kindra Hall, President and Chief Storytelling Officer at Steller Collective, joins the Social Pros Podcast to discuss how brands can increase consumer storytelling and solicit better stories from their customers. Huge thanks to our amazing sponsors for helping us make this happen. Please support them; we couldn't do it without their help! This week: Salesforce Marketing Cloud Emma Full Episode Details As a species, we’ve told stories since the first caveman (or cavewoman) painted mammoths inside cave walls. We’ve definitely got better at it since then, but the foundation of storytelling and how stories have the unique ability to drive emotion from deep within us has remained the same. There’s no denying that although the essence of storytelling hasn’t changed much, the way we tell stories certainly has. Even traditionally published books have had to make room for the digital screen age of storytelling and what is a social media post other than a short-form story? As Kindra Hall, President and Chief Storytelling Officer at Steller Collective says, every Instagram post is a stage for you to connect with your desired audience. So, you’ve got to make every word count and get people in your ecosystem to want to tell their stories with you. If you can find a way to solicit better stories from your customers, you’re well on your way to success. Matthew "Griff" Griffin is an author, TedX speaker, and co-founder and Chief Storytelling Officer for Combat Flip Flops. Griff is also a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in Engineering Management. Griff served in the 75th Ranger Regiment as a Rifle Company Fire Support Officer with three tours to Afghanistan and one tour to Iraq. Combat Flip Flops is a fascinating story on so many fronts. His entrepreneurial journey began the day he walked into a factory in Kabul Afghanistan that was manufacturing combat boots. In that moment Griff visualized a world where people living in Afghanistan could be manufacturing flip flops. It didn’t work out exactly as he first imagined. The flip flops are not manufactured in Columbia while workers in Afghanistan make jewelry out of scrap metal from unexploded landmines. Griff and his two co-founders are flipping the view on how wars are won and seek to empower the mindful consumer to manufacture peace through trade. Griff opened up about the many ups and downs of the startup and growth phase, including walking out of the Shark Tank with 3 Sharks on board. These days they work most closely with Mark Cuban. In addition to providing important jobs Combat Flip Flops donates a portion of their profits to fund schools in Afghanistan. When Griff describes an email her got from a group of girls at school in Kabul you’d best have a tissue handy. You can reach Griff at: Website: https://www.combatflipflops.com/ Instagram: @combatflipflops.griff Please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
