Pre-Order The Chief Storytelling Officer HERE: https://amzn.to/4eihvql"Commercials interrupt people. Shows invite them into the story world. That is the difference between traditional marketing and storytelling." — Rain BennettYour marketing campaign strategy is perfectly executed... and it still flops. The visuals are crisp, the copy is tight, and nobody cares. In this solo episode, Rain breaks down the real reason most marketing fails: it isn't a production problem, it's a storytelling problem. When your marketing isn't rooted in a clear brand purpose, it becomes what Rain calls "story yelling," which is loud, scattered, and ultimately forgettable. This is the fifth installment of the Narrative Operating System series, and it's where brand building and marketing strategy finally collide.Rain walks through how the Chief Storytelling Officer fits into your marketing function. Not to replace your CMO, but to ensure every campaign, every message, and every piece of content traces back to the brand narrative your company intentionally chose. The CSO's job isn't to ask "does this say what we want to say?" It's to ask "does this make people feel what we want them to feel?" That distinction is the entire difference between brand storytelling and traditional advertising.Using Yeti, Cali BBQ, and the Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation as case studies, Rain shows how the most effective marketing strategies aren't campaigns at all—they're story worlds. He introduces the Content Cascade model as a practical framework for building tent pole projects, supporting stories, and audience amplifiers from a single unified brand messaging strategy. And before you go, he breaks down which metrics actually reflect meaningful connection (watch time, saves, comments, shares) and which vanity metrics to stop reporting on entirely. If your brand purpose is clear but your marketing still feels scattered, this episode is your blueprint. In this episode, you will learn to:Understand the difference between story yelling and storytelling—and which one your brand is currently doingUse the Content Cascade model to build tent pole projects, supporting stories, and audience amplifiers from a single narrativeReplace vanity metrics with story metrics that actually measure connection and community growthAvoid the traps of trend chasing, channel hopping, and virality chasing that derail most marketing strategiesAudit your last 10 pieces of marketing to see if they stem from one unified brand narrative or exist as isolated piecesLINKS AND RESOURCESEpisodes Referenced:EP 225 → Brand: How It Feels to Be Part of Your Story WorldEP 230 → Product: Where Your Story Gets ProvenGuest Referenced → Sean Walcheff, Cali Barbecue Media → https://www.calibbq.mediaOrganization Referenced → Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation → https://www.ncf.net/Book → The Chief Storytelling Officer by Rain Bennett → Coming August 25th https://amzn.to/4eihvqlFor more storytelling tips and strategies, visitWebsite → https://rainbennett.comPodcast → https://thestorytellinglabpodcast.comOr follow along at:TikTok → https://www.tiktok.com/@chiefstorytellingofficerTwitter/X → https://twitter.com/rainbennettInstagram → https://www.instagram.com/rainbennettFacebook → https://www.facebook.com/thestorytellinglabYouTube → https://www.youtube.com/@RainBennett Hosted on Acast. "Your product is not the features, the specs, it's not what you ship. The product is the experience, the transformation that your customer goes through. It's the change in their lives. That's what you're selling." — Rain BennettYou can have a bold vision, a clear mission, and a brand people believe in... and still fail. Because none of it matters if your product doesn't deliver. In this solo episode, Rain breaks down the fourth layer of the Narrative Operating System: Product, the moment where your story is either proven or broken. Using Nike's grassroots origins and screenwriting software Highland Pro as case studies, Rain shows how the best brands don't build products for their customers—they build them with them. He also introduces the Hub and Spoke Model as a practical framework for keeping every feature and offering tied back to your core brand narrative, and walks through the most common product traps (feature bloat, trend chasing, and data misreading) that cause brands to drift and fracture over time.In this episode, you will learn to:Reframe your product as the moment your brand story is proven, or exposedUse the Hub and Spoke Model to keep every product feature tied to your core narrativeBuild with your customers instead of for them by treating listening as a storytelling strategyUnderstand where the Chief Storytelling Officer sits in the product conversation and why it mattersAvoid the three biggest product traps: feature bloat, trend chasing, and misreading data without contextEpisodes Referenced:EP 216 → Vision: The Big Future Story (https://www.thestorytellinglabpodcast.com/items/the-real-reason-your-brand-feels-disconnected)EP 220 → Mission: How You're Going to Get There (https://www.thestorytellinglabpodcast.com/items/%E2%80%9Cvision-is-what-inspires-your-people.-mission-is-what-activates-and-organizes-them.%E2%80%9D)EP 225 → Brand: How It Feels to Be Part of Your Story World (https://www.thestorytellinglabpodcast.com/items/the-real-brand-difference)Guest Referenced → Nelson Farris, first Chief Storytelling Officer at NikeGuest Referenced → John August, screenwriter and founder of Highland ProPodcast Referenced → Scriptnotes with John August and Craig MazinSoftware Referenced → Highland Pro → https://www.highland.appBook → The Chief Storytelling Officer by Rain Bennett → Coming August 25th (https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-chief-storytelling-officer-b-rain-bennett/1149080177?ean=9781636988115)Substack → Subscribe for more NOS content → https://rainbennett.substack.comFor more storytelling tips and strategies, visit:Website → https://rainbennett.comPodcast → https://thestorytellinglabpodcast.comOr follow along at:TikTok → https://www.tiktok.com/@chiefstorytellingofficerTwitter/X → https://twitter.com/rainbennettInstagram → https://www.instagram.com/rainbennettFacebook → https://www.facebook.com/thestorytellinglabYouTube → https://www.youtube.com/@RainBennett Hosted on Acast. His favorite? Raw oysters cracked open right on the pier. What We CoverStorytelling Is the Strategy Storytelling is not a marketing add-on. It is the operating system for your entire organization. The transformation lives in the receiver of the story, not the teller. You must hook people emotionally before any information can land.Narrative vs. Stories Your brand narrative is the overarching mission and change you want to create in the world. Your brand stories are the infinite individual moments that support it. Once this is clear, story opportunities appear everywhere, from a LinkedIn post to a full documentary.Co-Authoring with Your Community Great brand narratives are collaborations, not monologues. Like Nike sending reps to track meets to listen to runners, you must build deliberate systems to find and capture your stories.Everyone Is a Brand Storyteller From the CEO to the server at your restaurant, every human touchpoint is a chapter in your brand story. Culture starts from the top, but the story is lived by everyone on your team.Your Story Is Your Only Unique Asset Skills can be acquired. Tools can be replicated. But nobody on this earth has your path. Your story is the single most valuable asset you own and it is usually the most overlooked.Memorable Quotes"The power of storytelling lies in the receiving of the story, not the teller. If you think storytelling is just for the stage, think again. In this week's episode of Consulting Matters, I sat down with not one but two former Disney executives—brothers Bob and Rick Allen—who know the real power of story: not just to entertain, but to lead, influence, and change minds. Their Disney roots run deep (102 years combined, starting with their dad, who worked alongside Walt himself). But what they reveal goes far beyond theme parks and parades. Tune-in To Hear: Why story—not data—is the consultant's real superpower A behind-the-scenes look at how Disney embeds story into everything (including spreadsheets) The 6 storytelling elements every coach and consultant should master Why does how you share your ideas matter more than how smart your ideas are How to use story to influence even the most results-driven executives And yes, we swap some epic Disney tales, from launching resorts like Animal Kingdom Lodge to transforming a Disney division into a private company (and surviving 9/11 with a Navy contract!). If you love Disney, storytelling - or just want to coach and consult with more meaning - this episode is a must-listen. That is often a sign that the story is missing, not the expertise. Start with the picture before the process: In your next conversation or proposal, describe what changes when the work is successful before explaining how you get there. Stories help people see themselves in the outcome. Get support clarifying your message: If this episode made you realize you need help communicating the value of what you do, I created a free messaging guide to help. Over the course of his career, Rick spent 24 years in executive leadership across theme parks and resort hotels, served on the grand opening team for Disneyland Paris, and led the operations design and opening of Disney's Art of Animation Resort. After retiring from Disney, Rick served as Chief Operating Officer for Give Kids The World and later as COO for the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. He now consults with organizations in hospitality and experience design and serves on the board of Shepherd's Hope, a nonprofit providing free healthcare to the uninsured in Central Florida. Rick is passionate about unleashing the power of inspiration to elevate customer experience. Bob Allen is the Chief Storytelling Officer at IDEAS and brings decades of creative leadership from across Disney's entertainment and production legacy. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a musician at 16 and went on to hold key roles in Disneyland's Live Entertainment division, contributing to major productions including the Main Street Electrical Parade. Bob later worked as a writer and producer with Walt Disney Imagineering, helping develop attractions for EPCOT, and went on to lead film, tape, and multimedia production for Tokyo Disneyland. After relocating to Walt Disney World, Bob held senior leadership roles including Director of Film and Tape Production and Vice President of Disney Production Services, overseeing creative operations at Disney-MGM Studios. Today, Bob focuses on concept development, experience design, and branding, helping organizations harness the power of story to create meaningful, memorable experiences. About the host: Betsy Jordyn is a business mentor, brand messaging strategist, and former Disney consultant who helps purpose-driven consultants and coaches build profitable businesses rooted in their unique strengths. With over 20 years in the industry and a knack for turning big ideas into clear positioning, she's your go-to for strategy that aligns with your calling. And together, we're gonna have a conversation about what storytelling really is, why it matters so much more than most consultant-coaches realize, and how to use it to elevate your influence and impact.
You've likely heard the parable of two brothers with an alcoholic dad. One brother becomes an alcoholic, blaming his father and stating, "What else could I do?” While the other brother becomes a teetotaler, blaming his father and stating, "I watched my dad, and don't want to end up like him.” We all have things that happen in our lives, and we create a story about it, based around a perspective we think is true. We attach meaning, and we believe it. Even though we often change our perspective later. What would it be like if we questioned our perspective to begin with? A few years ago I sat down with Kindra Hall to discuss this. Kindra is a Wall Street Journal best-selling author, international speaker, and the former Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine. She wrote a book titled, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life: Silence Your Inner Critic and Rewrite Your Life from the Inside Out, which was my muse for our conversation. As you're about to hear, this isn't some Pollyanna positivity motivation. The point is to reveal how we are not writing about facts, but perspectives, and if we accept this, we can free ourselves. When the world seems so deeply divided, how can we step across barriers and preconceived notions to build avenues for conversation and collaboration? In this episode, Kaitlin Yarnall, Chief Storytelling Officer at National Geographic, argues that storytelling could hold the key. National Geographic has become synonymous with eye-opening, awe-inspiring, perspective-shifting storytelling. They have been honing the craft for well over a century, telling stories that have helped to alter perceptions, build coalitions, pass legislation, and ignite movements. Kaitlin shares the components for effective storytelling, from the narrative elements to tapping into the right emotions and having a clear understanding of your audience and how to reach them. At S2G, we consider storytelling to be one of the key ingredients for the climate transition. This episode so beautifully illuminates the potential of storytelling and how to tap into its power to move audiences and bring more people into the conversation.Key Topics: Tapping Into Awe Instead of Fear: Kaitlin shares some of the research behind which emotions drive people to action. While fear, shame, and anger can motivate someone to act in the short term, emotions like awe, wonder, and hope can get people to think and act differently in the long term. Translating Science to Storytelling: According to Kaitlin, we need to bring characters into science stories, get creative with communicating scale, and maybe even do a little reframing of the scientific method. Knowing your audience: As Kaitlin says, “The audience is everything.” It is not enough to say you are creating something “for the public.” We have to have a very clear understanding of who we're speaking to and what they will relate to. Communicating about Climate: Kaitlin has a very simple message for those of us trying to communicate and educate about climate: We have to try harder. Polar bears don't move everyone. We have to reframe the conversation based on what different communities care about. Storytelling Tips and Tricks: Find the visuals, know the audience, and don't forget the humor. Stories that Stick (ft. Kindra Hall)A master storyteller on what works, what matters, and what doesn't work or matterOPENING QUOTE:“We get to know people through their stories, and they're asking themselves in that moment as you come out on stage: "I'm spending the next hour with this person, do I like them? Do I connect with them? Do I feel like they're related to me in any way? Do I trust them?”-Kindra Hall:GUEST BIO:Kindra Hall is the best selling author of Stories That Stick: How Storytelling Can Captivate Customers, Influence Audiences, and Transform Your Business. Kindra is one of the busiest keynote speakers on the scene, helping global brands better communicate the value of their company, their products and their individuality through strategic storytelling. She's also the Chief Storytelling Officer at SUCCESS Magazine, where she shares the inspiring, often untold stories of achievers like Daymond John, Deepak Chopra, James Altucher and Misty Copeland in print and on the podcast SUCCESS Stories with Kindra Hall.Links:WebsiteFacebookTwitterLinkedInInstagramYouTubeCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[6:00] - The Four Key Elements of a Great StoryKindra's secret sauce for amazing storytellingKindra lists four key components of great storytelling— First, they need an identifiable character. It can be you or someone else, but it needs to be someone your audience can identify with.Next, a story needs authentic emotion. It doesn't have to make your audience cry, but it needs to make them feel something. Third— a story needs a moment. It's a point in the story where the listener can “come in and sit right there next to you,” experiencing what you or the main character experienced. Finally, a story needs specific details. This adds to the image your audience is creating in their minds, making your story more vivid and impactful.[14:48] - Intros & EndingHow Kindra thinks about two of the most important parts of a keynoteWhen it comes to intros, Kindra has a strong stance: “Always start with the story.” That's how your audience will get to know you, much more than listing out your credentials or resume. As far as endings, Kindra ties all the concepts she's gone on to discuss back to that original story. It brings everything full-circle, and helps solidify the concepts discussed because they tie back to her original narrative. This leaves a lasting impression and ties emotion and feelings to the intellectual side of what's been discussed.[22:36] - Kindra's Storytelling HeroesInfluential names you may not knowKindra lists her mentor, Donald Davis, as one of her storytelling heroes. She cites his traditional storytelling chops and ability to make life's everyday moments have power and value as one of her biggest inspirations. Kindra also lists the opening story of Glennon Doyle's book Untamed, despite its status as being considered “overhyped.” It clearly struck a chord with a wide range of people— the hallmark of a great story.[29:16] - Kindra's Storytelling No-NosTaking a stand against emotional manipulationTwo things Kindra feels strongly about in stories and keynotes— don't cry, and don't tell stories that have no purpose other than to make your audience cry. Becoming emotional onstage might feel like it will convey vulnerability and impact, but the truth is that it takes the focus off your audience and puts it on you. You're meant to be the deliverer of the message, not the central star of the message.Meanwhile, Kendra says that while stories should be emotionally resonant, they also need to tie back to your message on an intellectual level. Ask yourself what the purpose of a story you share actually is— if it doesn't go any deeper than “making the audience cry,” cut it out.[32:52] - More than an OvationKindra's real measure of a great keynoteMany speakers measure success in standing ovations. But Kindra uses another metric. Does anyone come up to her after the keynote and ask to discuss its message with her further? Does anyone speak to her about speaking at another event? These are signs that she's made a lasting impression after leaving the stage and concluding the event. That's the true measure of keynote success.RESOURCES:[23:02] About Donald Davis[24:02] Untamed, by Glennon Doyle[24:40] New York Times Metropolitan DiaryFollow Kindra Hall:WebsiteFacebookTwitterLinkedInInstagramYouTubeFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. Listen in as Kindra breaks it down and shares a fun exercise you can do to see how many stories you're made up of and how those stories have shaped you. Fear, especially fear of failure, often comes from the stories we've subconsciously held onto for our entire lives. This leads to inaction, stagnancy, and a lack of growth. How can we overcome this? If we look at what influences us, there might be a story behind why we're influenced by those things… Listen in to hear Chase and Kindra's thoughts on this intriguing phenomenon. Kindra speaks on whether or not we need to be mindful of how our stories passively influence others. If you're struggling with the emotions from old stories and the struggle is keeping you stuck, ask yourself: Are there stories since that time that exhibit the characteristics that I want to become, that I'm working towards, or that I'm proud of? I'm back with best-selling author and the former Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine, Kindra Hall, to walk through her personal values, motives, and habits in the key areas of life fulfillment so we can hear what has driven and does drive her to lead us in the stories we write about our lives, and design a life that fulfills her. In episode 1042, the longest show I've ever published, Kindra and I talked about…story. Specifically the message in her new book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life. Here we go behind the scenes into the ever evolving story she is writing in her current life. The Cliff Notes I think you'll want to hear more about, regarding her spirituality she pondered that her purpose is easy when she understands it, but hard when she doesn't. A key for her health and wellness is to consider the most essential uses of her time. On mental health, Kindra said she is consistently paying attention to what is working, and what isn't. And being aware that what did work might not anymore. In work and career we got to talking about our propensity to feel we need to put in a solid week, 40 hours or whatever, when so often, as she said, "I can create magic in only 10." We ended on achievements and I think you'll be curious to hear how Kindra views her own story regarding what she wants to achieve, as she admits that she's currently aware the big achievements so often did not provide as much fulfillment as the achievements she wasn't even looking for, like yesterday's testimonial from a teacher about her child's character. Kindra is the 191st guest I've had on my show and is one of the most thoughtful and interesting conversationalist I've experienced. We all wake up every day and participate in what we feel is simply our reality. Yet it's truly a storyline we've created, or accepted, or feel we are forced to live and in that case, agreed with and submitted to. For you, which is it? This is not some hoodoo guro motivation that life is make-believe and we simply decide to have it be something else better. That is offensive. But it is interesting how we live our daily lives and we let things like marriage, children, getting hired or fired from a job, an injury or even a windfall of money, totally change our story. If that's the case, can't we not only do things to change our stories for the better, but can we also change our perspective of our stories right away and make things better? And I have with me, Kindra Hall. Kindra is the best-selling author and the former Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine, whose work and research teaches individuals and brands to harness and leverage the power of their stories. Her first book, Stories that Stick debuted at #2 on the Wall Street Journal Bestseller List and Forbes said it “may be the most valuable business book you read." Inc.com said her newest book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life is "the business book you need to read in 2022." I however read this new book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life and felt it was a must-have conversation for…all of us. As humans. And what follows is my longest interview to date because the topics are so profoundly important. Find her book anywhere and connect with Kindra at kindrahall.com.
