Today, I am joined by Mark Huberman, President of the National Health Association and Editor of Health Science magazine.  He  has adhered to a whole food, plant-based vegan diet since birth in 1951 and credits his excellent health to the pioneering vision of his parents, Max and Ruth Huberman, who had the foresight to recognize the profound benefits of this lifestyle long before most others.  His parents operated a legendary health food store in Boardman, Ohio for more than 33 years where they influenced countless individuals to change their diet and lifestyle and regain and preserve their health. For nearly all of Mark's adult life, his greatest passion has been supporting the work of the National Health Association, the oldest organization in the Country advocating the benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet and lifestyle, something it has been championing since its founding in 1948. After serving his community as an attorney for more than 30 years, Mark retired and moved his focus fully to the NHA. In partnership with is wife, Wanda, they have organized annual health conferences which have featured the leading voices of the whole-food, plant-based health movement, including Drs. Joel Fuhrman, Alan Goldhamer, Stephan Esser, Frank Sabatino, Neal Barnard and more.    Hear Mark's incredible journey as a life-time plant-based eater, how Victoria Moran's documentary helped him make the connection and go vegan, the ways we can “all be a little bit better” and more.. “I am probably the consumer from hell when it comes to this stuff, and I do like to believe that I'm fighting on behalf of other people. Some sort of consumer rights, compliance vigilante.” -Christian Hunt If you've ever spotted a road sign that makes no sense at all, or been sent round in circles trying to cancel a TV subscription, you're not alone. Society relies on us complying with rules on a daily basis, but sometimes the rules laid out for us are confusing.  Christian Hunt is an expert in compliance and risk management, and the author of Humanizing Rules: Bringing Behavioural Science to Ethics and Compliance. From the funny to the deadly, he's been analysing many of these peculiar rules through his Compliance in the Wild series on social media, spurring his fans to send in examples of their own. This episode explores the impact these compliance faux pas have on consumers and the general public, and why we should make it our duty to call businesses out on this stuff. We hear how Christian's method of crowdsourcing content allows him to take bigger creative risks and evolve his message. And we explore some of the challenges writers face and how Christian is dealing with them. In this episode, you will learn: How to evolve and adapt your message after your book has been written. How to deal with criticism and stop overthinking failure. Why audience connection is so valuable to a creator. Find out more about Christian Hunt here. The Nats split their Tuesday doubleheader in Philadelphia to begin the 4 game series. Al & Mark recap Joey Meneses's late game heroics in Game 2 as his pair of HRs unexpectedly lifted Washington to victory. Hear Mark lay out what the first 162 games of Meneses' MLB career looks like in a stats sense; now that he has reached the unofficial milestone. (14:30) A big part of the 5-4 win was the bullpen coming through with 4+ scoreless innings of work. Andres Machado recorded 4 of the outs and his WHIP in August so far is 0.40. Earlier this summer the Nationals DFA'd Machado, but he ultimately ended up back in Rochester before being called back up. (26:00) Both Trevor Williams and Josiah Gray struggled in their starts and neither made it past the 5th inning. Williams has given up at least one run in eight consecutive outings and his spot in the rotation might be in jeopardy. (32:45) An extended discussion on recent pro Philadelphia comments by Bryce Harper that seemed to be underhanded towards D.C. fans. This oddly came in response to Phillies fans rallying around a struggling Trea Turner. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Say It Skillfully® is a show that helps you to benefit from Molly Tschang's expert guidance on the best possible ways to speak your mind at work in a positive and productive manner. Episode 192 is proof our passions in life can come seemingly out of nowhere. Molly's friend Mark Axelowitz takes us behind the scenes of his life journey—making his way to and excelling in a Wall Street career and then (when least expected) a surprise acting career, starring opposite none other than Robert De Niro three times! When Mark was 9, his father lost the entire family savings in the stock market. All 4 kids had no choice but to work. Mark delivered newspapers and caddied, and it was his flourishing landscaping business over a decade that covered his clothes, cars and saving for college. He recalls the deep embarrassment—worst house, worst car, having almost no furniture. While his father, who lived until 101, said losing everything was the best thing that could have happened because he had 4 children who weren't spoiled, Mark learned at a young age the necessity of making money. Staying home for college was the only option, taking 3 jobs: mowing lawns, packing trucks for UPS and working in the Hofstra computer center. Hear Mark recount his early roles and never looking back after his brash foray onto Wall Street. He became a top financial advisor, working with many of the most successful hedge funds, private equity funds and key players in entertainment. I won't spoil how Mark's 2nd career in acting transpired—you have to hear it to believe it. Don't miss how Mark epitomizes leaning into discomfort (a.k.a. freakin' out) as the path to growth. Married 34 years, in business with a partner he's known 43, relationships have been Mark's bedrock, as has serving his community. Mark shares (while not his intention) “100%—I owe my success to giving back … without philanthropy I'd never have met Ray Dalio, Bill Ackman, … or been an actor.” The moral of Mark's amazing journey: “helping others is the best way to help yourself.” Tune in for his many inspiring learnings to succeed on your terms and learn how to navigate life while being invaluable and true to yourself. The Nationals trailed by five runs entering the final frame, but made it interesting by loading the bases and bringing up the tying run to the plate. (04:15) Dom Smith had an inexplicable error in the pivotal bottom of the 5th, which led to 3 Mariners runs to take a 6-3 lead. Cory Abbott was on the mound at that point, because Trevor Williams was only able to last for 4 IP. (10:20) Paolo Espino was sent back to AAA Rochester after just one appearance to make room for 24 year old right hander Amos Willingham.
