Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast, I interviewed Scott Stratten. President of UnMarketing. Scott Stratten has Co-Authored 6 best-selling business books with his business partner and wife Alison and was formerly a music industry marketer, National Sales Training Manager, and a College Professor. They ran one of the most successful viral video agencies in the world for nearly a decade before solely focusing on speaking at events for companies like Walmart, Pepsi, Adobe, IBM, Microsoft, Cirque du Soleil and Saks Fifth Avenue when they need help navigating their way through the landscape of business disruption. UnLeadership: Make Building Relationships Your Business.   Key Takeaways In this riveting episode Scott Stratten discusses the concept of Unleadership. A sequel to their practical and effective ideas on Unmarketing. Drawing from their four-page chapters book, Scott compares leadership to culture as it continues to be made of the unseen "everyday stuff", as opposed to what you can make a picture out of such as: a person addressing a team of individuals. Beginning with a dose of self-awareness and the fact that "you don't know what it's like to work for you". Scott challenges leaders to define what a 'job' really is and to question what they consider 'insurbordination' in the workplace, touching on the other side of the coin: the overused, misused phrase 'we are a family' when referring to the business, and many other overlooked yet relatable pointers in building professional and empathetic subordinate relationships required to achieve set company goals and build a culture that is understood even at the very top of the organisational structure.   More About Scott Stratten: Connect with Scott on LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/unmarketing/ Visit their Website - unmarketing.com/ If you liked this episode please consider rating and reviewing the show. "UnMarketing is my attempt to reduce hypocritical marketing, because I saw twenty years ago that people were interuptively marketing in a way they hated to be marketed to. I realized there had to be better ways than this "push and prey" mentality and instead choose a "pull and stay" mindset to authentically build community so that when people need your product or service they will unconditionally choose you." No one enjoys being on the receiving end of a business that manipulates or pushes you into buying something. Good business is about relationships where you are authentic, engaged, and building trust. Today's guest is Scott Stratten. Scott is an author, podcast host, and an award winning keynote speaker. He is known for his energy, passion, knowledge, humor, and his man bun. His live and virtual presentations bring UnMarketing to life, energizing attendees, and creating experiences audiences will remember and learn from. Show Notes: [1:30] - Scott's inspiration for starting UnMarketing was frustration. He explains his background and how he moved forward into entrepreneurship. [3:58] - In business, Scott saw the “buy or bye” mentality and believes there's a better way. [5:27] - It isn't about tactics. Strategies don't take into account the human factor. [6:53] - “I'm going to say what I think and I'm going to say it without a filter.” A lot of people are afraid of this for polarizing the market. [8:13] - Scott shares the story behind the domain name for UnMarketing. [11:01] - The kindness of the person who originally owned the domain name believed in Scott's brand. [13:04] - Many companies continue to manipulate people to buy. [14:04] - In marketing, if you lie, nobody knows. [15:49] - Scott shares the story of catching a company in a lie. [18:32] - The internet can't work in a way without trust. [20:09] - In over 300 episodes across six years on the Unpodcast, Scott has never run out of material. [23:31] - Business decisions must be ethical and Scott calls people out for unethical decisions in their business. [26:31] - If you have the endless pursuit of more, you don't appreciate what you have now. [29:38] - Scott has been presented with many opportunities but he couldn't serve too many audiences well and authentically. [33:39] - There is a difference between what is legal and what is right. [36:13] - A lot of companies believe they own their employees. Employees are an asset, not overhead. [37:18] - Scott shares the story of an experience when consulting and a technique called Stop, Start, Continue. [42:04] - After 20 years in this field, Scott continues to be shocked that people don't realize how they are supposed to treat others. [45:01] - Scott recently revamped the UnMarketing website to better show what it is about and to ensure that it is presented authentically. [46:29] - A newer phenomenon in business is that younger generations are coming in with better skills in tech. [48:31] - Be wary of those who say something isn't working anymore because they are likely selling an alternative. *** Link Blog: https://aldypradana.medium.com/pelajaran-dari-sebuah-brand-fe1a4e5416c4 *** Twitter: https://twitter.com/aldypradana17 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aldy_pradana17/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/aldypradana17 KaryaKarsa: https://karyakarsa.com/aldypradana17 *** Arsenio Store ID: https://www.instagram.com/arsenio.store.id/ Tokopedia: https://www.tokopedia.com/arseniostoreid --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/aldypradana/message

Take a swig of maple syrup for episode seventy-four of The Presentation Boss Podcast. Today we have the world-famous Canadian speaker, Scott Stratten. He's famous for his man-bun, talks on marketing and ‘the millennial rant'. Anyone who listens to enough content in the world of presentations ought not to be a stranger to this guy's work.Kate and Thomas always carefully plan out questions for each guest, and the same happened here. But when we jumped on the call, Scott began outlining how he has recently shifted some of his thinking about his own style and techniques and the conversation flowed away from the prepared questions.Turns out when you mix a Canadian and two Australians, good things can happen and conversation flows super easily. And this recording not only went longer than usual and had plenty of laughs mixed in with the gold, but it was deep, raw and vulnerable. And dang can Scott tell a brilliant story!About Our GuestScott Stratten is the President of UnMarketing. He has written five best-selling business books and was formerly a music industry marketer, National Sales Training Manager, and a College Professor. He ran one of the most successful viral video agencies in the world for nearly a decade before solely focusing on speaking at events for companies like Walmart, Pepsi, Adobe, IBM, Microsoft, Cirque du Soleil and Saks Fifth Avenue when they need help navigating their way through the landscape of business disruption. Also, he is going to yell a lot. Without naming names, there are quite a few entities in the real estate business focused on delivering products, services, and methodology to obtain more sales. Some sell programs and apps, some sell their services, and some “employ” agents. As a trainer of real estate agents, I have seen it all and see more every single day. And while some of it is great, some of it sucks and some of it sits squarely in the middle, my question is this….Who's teaching the greatest sales tool of all time? Who is teaching the thing that can transform any agent in any city at any company into a top producer? Who's teaching people? This past Friday, as I listened to keynote speaker Scott Stratten, author of most famously, Unmarketing, discuss with 700 agents the “secret,” he focused on just that: people. Reaching them, building with them, enhancing relationships. So how about teaching listening, attentiveness, empathy?

When most speakers take the stage, they do exactly what’s expected of them. A great speech, followed by an eruption of cheer from the audience and hopefully, a standing ovation. However, not every speaker plays by the ‘rules’ of speaking and Scott Stratten is someone who, I think is fair to say, believes that speaking shouldn’t be bounded by so many rules. His signature rebel style on stage entices audiences and brings them to the edge of their seats as he encourages them to embrace ‘the age of disruption.’ Scott is a Hall of Fame speaker and although many people may know him as the ‘guy with the man bun’, he has built an enviable career out of pulling no punches and taking no shortcuts. He’s one of the most successful disruption speakers in the world and is often referred to as the ‘ultimate sales and marketing truth slayer.’ Scott’s stories get people laughing, thinking and perhaps more importantly, doing. When he is asked to do a keynote, he holds nothing back and never fails to deliver. Perhaps one of his best stories and certainly one that sends me into a fit of laughter is his famous story about Millennials. Well, I say story, but it’s really more of an impressive rant that forces his audience to question the Millennial bias and whether or not they deserve all of the negativity they get from older generations. In Matthew McConaughey's famous Oscar acceptance speech, he mentioned that you need 3 things.... Someone to look up to, Something to look forward to, and A Hero to chase. In my world, I have a friend that delivers me all 3 of those requirements in one human. He is a role model in both my personal and professional life, I look forward to every time I am in the presence of him and his incredible wife Alison and damn I wish I could catch up with him. The man is a living legend and I was tempted to speak with him about a word that included the letters "UN".... Why? you may be thinking.... Well Scott and Alison are the creators of Unmarketing, Unselling, Unbranding, and the brilliant Unpodcast. So instead of talking about any of the UNbelievable obvious words, or reaching for the comedic "manbun" option, instead.... Scott Stratten shares his insight into the word "Speaking." Let's Fix Work
007: Four Theories on How to Fix Work with Laurie Ruettimann

Let's Fix Work

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2018 17:26

Maybe you despise work. Maybe you’re apathetic about it. Or maybe work would be bearable if it weren’t for that one co-worker who always… You get the picture. Most people aren’t passionate about their cubicles. We’ve had some interesting guests over the past few weeks, and today, Laurie shares her takeaways from those conversations and some of her own theories on how to fix work, starting with one very important thing: to fix work, you need to fix yourself. Stop living in your head and comparing yourself to others. You ARE going to face things like institutionalized racism, sexism, ageism and more, and that’s terrible. But you can’t let that force you into your own mental prison. If you’re going to fix yourself, you need to live in the present and live mindfully. You need to be an active participant in your own life. Scott Stratton, the author of UnMarketing, was Laurie’s first guest, and he was fearless in burning down his corporate career. The lesson to take from him is that when your job is killing your soul, you should burn down your professional life and build it back up again. You don’t have to do it like Scott did; Laurie argues for a slow, well-planned burn. We had another Scott next, Scott Santens. He’s known as the foremost thinker and speaker on basic income. It’s not welfare; instead, it’s a dividend. Companies hide profits overseas. They lobby the government for their own benefit, not yours. And the money they save isn’t invested in employees, not at all. Laurie explains how the basic income is needed, and why it needed now more than ever. People need to get fairly paid for their work, and that will only happen with wage transparency, both with employees and employers. Laurie challenges you to ask YOUR potential employers a series of questions that, while they might make them uncomfortable, you need to, and have a RIGHT to know. Jason Lauritsen was up next as a guest, and he and Laurie delved into what you can do to get clear on your goal for your work life. Sure, he hates work. But he doesn’t hate working. They talked about his evolution from cubicle to entrepreneurship and doing it the safer way. It all began with learning. Laurie shares another of her insights to work: we fix work by deprioritizing it in our lives. Hard to do? Of course it is! We need to pay our bills. But even when you’re paying your bills, you can still separate your identity from your job title, and Laure tells you how to do it. She also dares you to only give 80% at work. Guest #4 was Amanda Hite, another of Laurie’s friends. Amanda has had an interesting life, and at one point, she had a boss who encouraged her to stay in the closet to advance her career. Really. Now that Amanda is a successful CEO, she wants people to be their whole selves at work, and she campaigns for employees to be heard and honored, even if it makes management a little more challenging. You need to drop the mask you’re wearing on an everyday basis. It’s not doing you any good to pretend to be someone else, to try to fulfill a role that isn’t you. You can’t live two lives. Laurie believes that we can fix work by having a harmonized personality that reflects your passion, your sense of purpose, and our core values. There’s only one you. So be you. Tim Sackett was the next guest, and he is an expert on recruiters. Yes – the Jerry McGuire type of recruiter who fights to put the best talent in the best jobs. Except they aren’t usually like that. Some – or most – are shady paper-pushers who are only in it for the money. It doesn’t have to be that way, but since you can’t change the recruiters, you can be your OWN talent agent. Laurie explains how. Laurie had a careers reporter from Business Insider as her most recent guest. Áine Cain is the type of woman who breaks the barriers and smashes stereotypes for the next generation of workers in offices. From #MeToo to robot workers, Áine has an exciting breadth of knowledge from her role in Business Insider. She also thinks you should smash your own pseudo-science around generational thinking. Laurie shares what you SHOULD be thinking about instead. Are you interested in a ‘Let’s Fix Work’ community, where you can get freebies, early access to the podcast, interact with Laurie and guests? Scott Stratten hated work. It was broken. So he decided to burn it all down and build it back up. How did he do it? By becoming unemployable. Join Laurie and Scott as they talk through his experience before and after burning down his career (multiple times) and what he did to make life and work better for himself. What can YOU do to burn down your career? Scott knew he wanted to be a speaker at age 12. For his 16th birthday, he asked for a textbook on HR standards because he realized that he could stand up for people through human resources. Pretty nerdy, right? Scott shares the story of when he was in HR for Goodwill and the ridiculous situation that made him realize he couldn’t do the job any more. It started with an employee stealing from Goodwill. That’s bad enough. But then she was given $5,000 to drop her grievance. Would you have done with Scott did? He went on to find another job training employees to sell bubble wrap, constant travel and ridiculous hours, which he quit with only 64 cents in the bank and a son on the way. His next job as an independent trainer didn’t go much better, but something happened that turned it all around for him. He created some viral content in the HR circle. Laurie makes a surprising observation about the American economy; the rug’s going to get pulled out from under us at any time. She asks Scott how he’s future-proofing himself and his business. Normally, business owners want to grow their businesses, but Scott’s answer will shock you. He’s willing to take a 50% cut in revenue. Not everyone wants to be a keynote speaker or online leviathan. Some people want to open frozen yogurt shops. Scott shares some sage advice on how to burn it down, or how NOT, to burn it down. The first piece of advice? Start building your other thing before you burn your current thing down. He even throws some ‘dad’ advice in there. You can find Scott just about everywhere; just search the term ‘unmarketing.’ You’ll also find him on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. We hope your enjoyed this episode! He talks about his personal experience of saying no more to being Mr. Nice Guy and how to have a great love life. Timestamped Show Notes: [ 02:35 ] Backstory. [ 05:53 ] No More Mr. Nice Guy. [ 56:02 ] Failing Forward. Takeaways: There is a worldwide men’s movement that is growing and gaining traction, men’s are wanting to be better and grow personally so that they can improve their relationships and then their overall lives. Men are seeking answers by being vulnerable and putting themselves out there. Men want to feel masterful. Nice guys have the temperament to be easy going and a desire to make people happy. However where that temperament goes wrong is in wanting to become who they think people want them to be and denying aspects of themselves that they think will receive a negative reaction from others. Look to ascertain what is wrong in a situation before someone else has to do it for you. Look at it as dancing, men lead. You don’t have to lead all the time, but it is your job to be the leader. A relationship is about reciprocity, the woman will reciprocate the tone you set with your leadership. When you are being your authentic self you have no competition when you are just meeting a woman be you and if she likes you it will be easier to maintain your relationship.   Resources: BDB Live No More Mr. Nice Guy Book Passionate Marriage Book The Road Less Traveled Book

If you’re like most entrepreneurs and business leaders, you may fear your success will be short-lived; you may worry you’ll be replaced when the next big thing comes along. In this episode, Brian Buffini delves into the sure-fire solution to building a business that lasts—an adherence to the fundamentals. You’ll learn why relationships are the key to building a strong, successful business; how excellent service will allow you to stand out from the competition and the reason it’s essential to continue to keep your skills sharp. Shore up your business to last, regardless of the changes in the market.   Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “Principles don’t change, tactics do.” — Brian Buffini “The purpose of the technology is to support the fundamentals, not replace them.” — Brian Buffini “What I know for sure is that in life and in business, relationships matter.” — Oprah “If you believe business is built on relationships, then make building them your business.” — Scott Stratten “When you invest time in your relationships, people understand you’ve given them the greatest gift.” — Brian Buffini “Time is the most valuable resource we have.” — Brian Buffini “Achieving incredible success means using your time wisely, not watching it pass you by.” — Brian Buffini “If you want to create relationships that endure with your customers, investing time is key.” — Brian Buffini “The greatest gift you can give another human being is the gift of your attention.” — Daniel Goleman “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” — Matthew 6:21 “Always render more and better service than is expected of you, no matter what your task may be.” — Og Mandino “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” — Muhammad Ali “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi   Mentioned in the episode Unmarketing by Scott Stratten   Connect with Brian Buffini http://www.brianbuffini.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brianbuffini Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianbuffini Buffini Show Insiders: http://www.thebrianbuffinishow.com/insiders Love what you heard? Marketing, Branding, Business, Customers, Loyalty   Summary   Our brand is not what we'd LIKE the marketplace to think of us and say about us. It's what they DO think and say about us. We'll look at that in our Thought of the Day. And in our interview segment, branding authority, Alison Stratten shares with us the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to businesses … and their branding. That and more on today's show.   Bob's Thought of the Day   We'll explore:   The importance of constantly working at being a brand worthy of being chosen over our worthy competitors in the marketplace. One way of being “brand worthy” to our customers. The critical difference between how you WANT your customers to feel about your company, and how they ACTUALLY feel about it. Interview with Alison Stratten   You'll discover:   How Alison defines branding. The two key elements of a brand. What it means to be disruptive. Four ways to create customer loyalty. How the logos of Apple and Volkswagon can elicit polar opposite feelings. Why rebranding is about changing practices and creating great brand stories. A compelling story about a pizza company whose staff saved a man's life. Why frontline staff are a company's biggest and best ambassadors. An example where trying too hard can come across as...insulting. Why a company should take more time to find out its customers' real needs. One example of incongruence and one of congruence with two different brands.   Click to Tweet   The only “why” we should have is because our customers want it or because our market needs it. #branding #business @unalison Your #brand doesn't actually belong to you. Why Alison feels often times there's more to learn from train-wrecks when things go badly wrong as opposed to when they went right. Why she feels overly focusing on new technology can take away from creating value for your customers. Technology is just a tool. The relationship between brand and influencer is complex. It takes more than metrics. It takes a hard discussion about values. You can't put a flashy campaign on something that's worthless and expect it all to work out.   3 Key Points: Success doesn't have a specific measure. Don't be intimidated or overly concerned with ten steps down the road. Enjoy the journey you're on. Focus on loyalty, not new technology. Quality will always trump convenience. As part of my business (and my inherently nosy personality) I love the peeking in on other people's lives aspect of social media. I love the stories they tell. I love connecting with people over similar interests. But what I don't love is the fakery and insincerity of some accounts on behalf of businesses. I just want to shake them and say, "Really? Are you sure about that?". I thought it was just me. Then I read Unmarketing by Scott Stratten and felt a huge sense of relief. I was not alone in my frustration on the fake factor. I've had Unmarketing on my shelf for a bit. I'm not sure why I held out but am so glad I got over whatever was holding me back. This book confirmed that the fake route, autotweeting, push marketing and all the other things that drive me crazy were in fact dumb. And bad for your business. And annoying. Thanks to reading this book I now have a deeper confidence in the slow but steady growth of my social media audience and the recommendation to my clients that they too embrace the WYSIWYG way. One of the many things I love about this book is how each section is a manageable length for marketing newbies and filled with enough insight and actionable items for those more long in the marketing tooth. The fact that it made me laugh out loud several times and managed to teach me so many great things? Well, that's a bonus worth passing on to others. If you're more of a video learner, then do yourself a favor and check out one of many of Scott's keynotes, the unmarketing podcast and other videos of amazeballs via: https://www.youtube.com/user/stratola/featured. Careful if you have a drink in your hand while you watch it. It's either coming out your nose or ending up in your lap at some point. Laughing or a forehead palm for the aha moments you'll have - keep it cold. You're welcome ;)

We are always marketing ourselves whether we know it or not. "You can't get rabid fans without rabid detractors." -Scott Stratten The Cheat Sheet: How he uses his appearance to his advantage. What can you learn from his speech at The Venetian? Scott debunks the myths of social media. How did his jackass whisper statement become his mantra? What two things will he never talk about and why? And so much more... If someone has ever made a negative personal comment directed at you you know how hard it is to brush it off. Our guest for today has learned firsthand how to let go of detractors and focus on the people who support him. Scott Stratten has been named one of the key influencers in the world. He's also the head honcho of Unmarketing, author of several books including one by that same name and is an international keynote speaker. We talk about what "unmarketing" is, why it stirred up so many naysayers and how he's dealt with them (and more) on episode 389 of The Art of Charm. More About This Show: If you saw Scott Stratten on the street you might mistake him for a homeless man; he's well-bearded with long hair, tattoos and usually wears jeans and a tee. But that appearance misleads many folks; Scott is a famous author, keynote speaker and entrepreneur who made his biggest splash with his Unmarketing brand. Today we talk about what that term unmarketing means, the commotion it stirred up (and continues to stir up), why he welcomes thoughtful debates and ignores trolls, and how important it is to create connections and build networks in every area of your life. Unmarketing simply means to stop marketing, start connecting and engaging. It's the idea that we become experts, position ourselves as such in front of our target markets so they chose us when the time comes. It is NOT the traditional means of marketing: splashing your goods and services in front of anyone with no regard for whether or not they're part of your target market. Unmarketing doesn't just apply to entrepreneurs and business owners though, it applies to all of us. Scott says we are all marketing and creating our own branding whether we know it or not. All of us are never not under review in any area of our lives from work to our relationships. Keeping with that idea he's been able to separate the critics from the trolls, and his advice applies for all of us. First and foremost he believes legit criticism is needed, and you'll know it's legit because it's not personal. The minute it becomes personal don't engage. Second, our job is never to convince others not to hate you; doing so simply drains your energy and your strength, don't waste your time on those people. He also gives a great example of how he dug his well before he was thirsty, and shares how that ties into unmarketing. We talk about the myths of social media, and much more! Thanks to Scott for sharing his wisdom and special thanks to you for being here! We'll see you next time on The Art of Charm. THANKS SCOTT STRATTEN! He provides honest opinions and backs them up with facts which is no doubt a big part of his success in making the marketing world take notice of his skills in calling out bad examples of marketing and helping those businesses transform into solid, customer centric businesses. Scott and I talk about marketing, authenticity, building realtionships, social currency and the secrets to great communication along with his new book, UnSelling.  Scott shared two awesome quotes in the episode; You must be the change you wish to see in the world - Ghandi Heres to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. Theyre not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you cant do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. - Attibuted to Steve Jobs You can find Scott: TwitterFacebookWebsiteand on his own Podcast that he co-hosts with his online and IRL partner, Alison Kramer (also an awesome follow). Welcome to episode #416 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. I had heard of Jason SurfrApp before, only that wasn't his name. The last time I had heard of him, his name was Jason Headsetsdotcom (not kidding). That right, Jason had done this before. He had legally changed his last name to the highest bidder... and he had done it again. Call it a stunt. Call it unconventional, but Jason has a knack for this kind of marketing... or entrepreneurship (depends on how you slice it). He created IWearYourShirt, a company that used sponsored t-shirts to promote businesses on social media and turned it into a million dollar business (not a typo). He took the same approach to the recent publishing of his business book, Creativity For Sale. Frustrated by the landscape of book publishers and book agents, Jason self-published and raised over $75,000 through sponsorships in the book before a single word was written or a single copy of the book sold. If you know anything about book advances and business book sales numbers, that's not a bad amount (at all). The Unmarketing hero, Scott Stratten, took to Facebook to record a video about how personalized Jason's pitch to Scott was. Stratten's video was so compelling that I invited Jason to talk about how he sees marketing, and what stunts look like in a world with so much noise. Enjoy the conversation... He borrowed the term from Scott Stratten's book, UnMarketing. We need to unlearn what we have already learned in order to be more effective in the way we approach it (networking). In order for a networking event to be successful for anyone, it is directly correlated by how many people are there for the same reasons as you. Derek never intended to make his Cadre events large. He vets his members to be sure they are CEOs and business owners. They bring guests to the events who pay $250. His events begin at 3:30 pm instead of after work. Derek explains how to trigger on-going reciprocity. He loves connecting people and providing value to his network. You need to find ways to make it easy for people who want to help you. His clients want to help him, but the introductions often don't take place. He created a couple of email templates for his clients to use to refer him. NBN8 Show Notes Listen to episode 8 in iTunes or Stitcher. Please take a moment to leave me an audio comment. Record one now. Scott explains his choice between self-publishing and traditional publishing for his books. His publisher, Wiley, got him in front of people, on bookshelves, distribution and exposure to networks and conferences. Scott makes his living from keynote speaking. UnMarketing is used as a textbook in forty universities including Harvard, Columbia, and University of West of Scotland. He used a specific email address in his books to understand where people were coming from. Great idea. Ready to write a book? Ask yourself, “What do I want from a book?” There is no way you'll make much money by going with a traditional publisher. Publishers want large audiences. Their job is to sell a lot of books. Scott got his start working in marketing in the music industry. Scott began by self-publishing a book called TGIM: Thank Goodness it's Monday. It took him five years to write and publish it. It's easier to write a book with deadlines (I can agree with this!) If you ever see a friend's book at a store. Be sure to give it great placement to help. How can we position ourselves as experts? It's all about networking. “The fundamental about networking is connection before commerce.” We do business with people we know, like and trust. You can network with people who would be your competitors if they lived in the same city. “If we have no threat geographically to each other, that opens up even more of a trust in a networking space.” For 7 or 8 years, Scott created viral videos (he apologized for using the term). This was before YouTube. They were created to build email lists. In 2009, Scott gave Twitter a second try - a final shot. He lived on Twitter for 30 days, and tweeted 7,000 times in one month. He went from 1,200 followers to 10,000! Scott did a great job with his keynote during New Media Expo this year.  Airplane with QR code. “If I stop one person from putting a QR code on a urinal, I've done my job.” My silly QR code. Scott critiqued 3-400 presentations each semester when he was a professor at Sheridan College. He learned that it is not about them, it's about the content. “The people sitting in the audience want value. They want content they can learn from.” Use three takeaways. “The best way to sell is to teach.” Respect your listener's time. QR codes on business cards. Good idea? Bad idea? Scott shares his thinking on this. “The job of a networking event isn't to see how many cards you can give out. It's to give out as few as possible to those you only connect with.” Scott has garnered more than 165,000 Twitter followers since April 8, 2008. We talk about how Twitter has changed since 2008. He explains how he doesn't like it as much now. “We create our own noise.” His biggest social media mistake was accepting every friend and follower request early-on. How to use Twitter Lists. Scott uses TweetBot. He mutes certain automation apps. Now he sees live, real-time tweets. Scott talks about how finds and shares so much great content. His entire purpose in life is to stay on top of what's going on and to have an opinion about it. We talk about podcasting.  They podcast by renting a studio and live video the recordings. I love my podcast listeners (that's you :) Scott recommends my book (thanks Scott!). New Business Networking: How to Effectively Grow Your Business Network Using Online and Offline Methods (Que Biz-Tech). Especially cute, little kittens. So don't blame me that Scott Stratten titled his latest book, QR Codes Kill Kittens - How to Alienate Customers, Dishearten Employees, and Drive Your Business into the Ground. If you were to ask Scott what he does for a living, he might have some kind of funny title like, Chief Consumer Protection Officer, but in reality he has changed from being a marketing critic to a consumer advocate. His other books, UnMarketing and The Book of Business Awesome / The Book of Business UnAwesome were both business bestsellers and QR Codes Kill Kittens is on the same track. What you will quickly learn about Scott is that he cares... deeply... about consumers getting everything they paid for and businesses that can deliver on their promises. He wants businesses to be better. And, that's always a good thing. He's become a close friend and advocate for all things Six Pixels of Separation over the years. Along with being a bestselling author and in-demand speaker, he is also doing two very interesting podcast series. Welcome to episode #318 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Will businesses ever get it right? Will they ever be able to please all of their customers all of the time. It's doubtful. While social media has put every company on the spot in terms of having to respond and do the right thing, not a day goes by when someone doesn't have a complaint that is blasted on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and beyond. What's a brand to do? On top of that, if we have customers complaining all of the time and everywhere, does it create a level of noise where, ultimately, there is no brand impact because of the sheer volume? It's something that Scott Stratten has been looking at (and taking part in) for some time. He blasted out of the marketing gates by gaining a massive following on Twitter (currently approaching 130,000 loyal followers). He converted that popularity into a best-selling business book, UnMarketing - Stop Marketing. Start Engaging, and a speaking career. More recently, he launched his second book, The Book of Business Awesome / The Book of Business UnAwesome. As with everything Scott does, it involves humor and personal stories of how businesses are getting it right and getting it woefully wrong (you can flip the book upsidedown to choose your awesome or unawesome adventure). Here he is... the guy known as Unmarketing. Enjoy the conversation... Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast - Episode #318 - Host: Mitch Joel. Running time: 55:58. I don't call Scott a genius lightly! But with the concept he came up with 'unMarketing' is GENIUS! Scott Stratten, author of UN-Marketing ~ Stop Marketing, Start Engaging, hit the proverbial nail on the head! He says: 'Marketing is not a task, or a job... Marketing happens every time you engage (or not) with your past, present, and potential customers. UnMarketing also takes it one step further—it is any time anyone talks about your company (you). Word of mouth is not a project or a viral marketing ploy. The mouths are already moving. You need to decide if you want to be a part of the conversation. Which is why I call it UnMarketing—the ability to engage with your market.'
