Learning the necessary business owner skills comes slowly over time, and mistakes will be made. But drawing lessons from those mistakes can be transformative. Master real estate investor and mentor Ron LeGrand joins Onward Nation to share how he developed the business owner skills needed to grow and scale his organization into the thriving empire it is today, and he shares some of the key lessons he learned along the way over the course of his decades-long career in real estate, mentoring and publishing. Developing Key Business Owner Skills Ron knew early on that the path he was on wasn’t going to provide the life he wanted for his family, and so at age 35 he borrowed $450 from friends and used the money to attend his first real estate seminar. As Ron explained in his interview, he learned “just enough to go out and make a mess”. But the early successes were enough to show Ron that he was on the right track, and so he continued to iterate on and refine his business model. One of the business owner skills that became the backbone of his success was learning to delegate responsibility, from putting the right people into the right roles in his company to hiring his most successful students to become coaches. Today, Ron isn’t just a successful entrepreneur and real estate investor, he also runs a thriving publishing business and has a team of mentors ready to teach others the real estate investing strategies Ron learned through trial and error. Being Ready to Pivot to the Market The onset of the global pandemic and its unforeseen challenges have impacted many businesses in dramatic ways, but knowing how to successfully pivot has proven to be one of Ron’s most effective business owner skills. He and his team quickly shifted their mentoring business to a virtual environment and adapted to the realities of social distancing, and in doing so they actually increased Ron’s reach and the profitability of the business. As Ron explained in the interview, being ready to pivot and adjust his strategies to the market has always been a crucial part of his success. By staying nimble and thinking creatively, Ron has been able to adapt to every challenge he has encountered and helped his business not just survive these obstacles but thrive through them. Most recently he wrote the book Tenacity, a memoir focusing on the determination necessary to overcome any and all unjust obstacles that may stand in the way of one's dreams. As he lived and climbed the ladder of success, for 45 years in Las Vegas, he faced a barrage of constraints, including political and police corruption, bribery, coercion, and even death threats along the way. He also started 20 different businesses after arriving in Las Vegas from the Marine Corps. Along the way, he dealt with death threats from competitors, as well as with some police and political corruption. Launching is the beating heart of an online business and my absolute favourite thing. There is one person who loves launching just as much as me and has made a name for himself as a launch-expert: Ron Reich. When my friend Selena Soo connected us last year, I immediately knew that I had to bring Ron on the show to talk about our big shared passion. Graduating from law school, Ron quickly knew that he didn't want to be a lawyer, got involved in online marketing and launched 50 of his own products, mainly in the relationship and dog training niches. In 2015, best-selling author Ryan Levesque asked him to be his Marketing Director, and he started to manage numerous multi million dollar marketing campaigns. Ron had arrived in his zone of genius: He became known as the behind-the-scenes launch person for Selena Soo and Denise Duffield-Thomas. Ron eventually wanted to help everybody, not only the A-players, to have great launches and has been teaching everything about launching ever since. In this episode of the Sigrun Show, Ron shares how he became a launch specialist, the mistakes he made and learned from, and what you have to look out for when you're launching during these challenging times. Are you about to launch? This episode is full of valuable tips and advice on why launches fail and what you can do to really make a difference in your own launch. “If you're just relying on automation, you're not going to be relevant.”- Ron Reich What you will get out of this episode: What brought Ron to launching (3:52) How Ron learned by doing (6:04) Ron's favourite launch method (11:11) What has changed with launching during these challenging times (16:36) The importance of staying relevant (00:00) The 3 main reasons why launches fail (18:41) The 2 things that really make a difference in launching (20:50) [Recording with image] [Link to transcript] [Link to Apple podcast / stitcher / Google Play] Can't get enough of launching? Learn how to launch without launching or how to keep momentum while launching. 3 Reasons Why Launches Fail (Plus 2 Tips on What Really Makes the Needle Spin) Even though we are going through a recession, many businesses are still selling and it might even be a great opportunity for you to launch now. To prepare you for the pitfalls of launching, Ron reveals the 3 main reasons why launches fail: People feel no desire to buy your product This doesn't mean that the product you're selling is something people don't want. It might just need to be repackaged to fit their needs better - especially in a time like now. While the market has become more price sensitive, people are still buying if the offer is a no-brainer. It's about making an offer your audience can't resist, even if that means that you might have to sell your offer for a lower price than you usually would. Set out for your product to be relevant and in the moment. What you're selling doesn't come across as new or different Ron has watched people launch the exact same product year after year, and seen their launches getting progressively worse. It wasn't because there were suddenly less people in the market. “It was because they got bored. People like shiny objects, they believe that what they don't have is better than what they do have,” Ron says. That's why you have to focus on being different. You can sell the same product each year, but in order to increase your launches, you need to make it come across as being different from the previous version: update it, give it a new message, or change its name. You don't have a big enough audience to hit your revenue goals It's a numbers game. Ron says that converting 2-5% of your audience to buy is considered a good result for every launch. If your conversion rate is above that? Great! However, the mistake people often make is setting a goal for their launch that is too high for the number of people in their audience. They achieve a conversion rate between 2-5% but are disappointed that their launch revenue isn't as high as they had hoped for, forgetting that if they're aiming to have a bigger launch, their audience needs to be bigger, too. While the launch process in its essence remains the same, Ron says that marketing has become more amplified with the crisis. “What that means for you as an entrepreneur is that your marketing just has to be that much better.” But how? Firstly, be willing to make sales calls. “If you're willing to get on those calls yourself, that makes all the difference. Your conversions will go through the roof,” Ron advises. And secondly, add any kind of personal touches that you can think of. If someone has been opening your emails or visited your sales page multiple times throughout your launch, reach out. Send a personalized video or message. This is the highest level of attention you could possibly give someone who is on the fence, and the more you do it, the more often you will convert. Now, I would love to hear from you. Did this interview with Ron help you with your launch planning, or do you have any launch stories you would like to share? I'm curious to hear them! You can follow and connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Selfmade Fund I'm taking this opportunity to remind you of the Selfmade Fund. We created our own fund in March to support selfmade entrepreneurs in need who can't cover rent and food during these difficult times. We started the fund with our own $10k contribution and are adding 10% of our revenue over 90 days. So far, over $47k have been donated to the fund and we've paid out a total of $4915. The money has gone to help 13 women including a single mother who is giving online sewing classes to make ends meet and a physical therapist who decided to stop working to keep her clients safe from exposure. The COVID-19 pandemic has left a lot of people in a vulnerable position, out of work and in need of food and comfort. And logistically, it’s very difficult for the government to step in to feed and supply an entire country locked in our homes. But what if those of us with means knew who was struggling and could help them directly? What if those of us in need had a place to go to ask for help—without fear of judgement? What if we could deliver LOVE and support each other through this unprecedented time? Ron Lynch is the Creative Director and CEO at Big Baby Agency, a marketing and media production consultancy that helps entrepreneurs and Fortune 500 companies alike build brands and launch new products through direct sales on television and online. In the wake of the Coronavirus shutdown, Ron introduced an initiative known as Intellihelp, a platform designed to engage its network of Angels with people in need one-on-one, fulfilling emergency food rations and drugstore medical and hygiene supplies. Since its inception in March 2020, Intellihelp has grown to a community of 65K members in 12 countries. On this episode of Men on Purpose, Ron joins Emerald and Ian to discuss what inspired him to create a peer-to-peer solution for fulfilling our current needs and explain how Intellihelp gives us the opportunity to step into who we can be as humans. He describes how he got the movement up and running so quickly, offering insight on choosing NOT to operate out of fear and making ‘cold and fast’ decisions when necessary. Listen in for Ron’s take on the misguided shame we feel around asking for help in America and learn what YOU can do to get involved in the Intellihelp movement and deliver LOVE in your community—and around the world! This week, Tom is speaking with Ron Berger, the Chief Academic Officer at EL Education. Ron has been with EL Education since 2003 and is responsible for leading EL Education's vision of teaching and learning. Bringing with him 40 years of experience as a teacher and professional development designer, with 28 of those years teaching public school, Ron is highly regarded in the education space. Going back to the beginning of Ron’s journey, he began teaching in a little town in Western Massachusetts. Just about everyone under the age of 50 in Shutesbury, MA, was one of Ron Berger’s students. The fact that his nurse, plumber, and accountant had all been in his class helped him understand the bigger picture. It made him ask himself, ‘Do they understand high-quality work? Do they have courage? Do they have quality values? And do they use critical thinking? Would I trust my life to that person?’ These became Ron’s principles in what he hopes for his students to achieve. When he went on to develop the Expeditionary Learning School model — a project-based community-connected approach focused on doing authentic, quality work — these principles remained at the forefront. Now, EL Education is helping more than 50,000 students become great scholars and active, ethical citizens with the capacity to build a better world. Listen in to Tom’s and Ron’s conversation about the incredible impact EL Education is having on students, teachers, and schools; Ron’s journey in education and how it has impacted his life personally and professionally; about his upcoming book, a sequel to his 2014 release, Leaders of Their Own Learning; and some incredible examples of how students are building quality character through the framework Ron has helped build through EL Education. Documentary filmmaker Ron Davis, whose work includes Harry and Snowman and the 2019 release Life in the Doghouse, seeks to tell inspirational true stories that are largely unscripted. Ron’s own journey to becoming a filmmaker might be worth a documentary of its own. Ron grew up riding and competing in the hunter/jumper divisions near his home in northern New Jersey, but left the sport behind to pursue a career in publishing in New York City. He spent 10 years working his way up the ranks, ultimately managing global sales and licensing for both Simon and Schuster and Sterling Publishing, a subsidiary of Barnes and Noble. After seeing a video celebrating a friend’s life, Ron was inspired to create a similar piece as a gift for an equestrian he knew. A filmmaker friend, a producer for the sitcom How I Met Your Mother, saw the piece and recognized that Ron had an innate talent for filmmaking. With his friend’s encouragement, Ron decided to pursue filmmaking in his spare time. In 2009, using his background in sales to help fundraise for the project, Ron co-produced and co-directed his first full-length film, Pageant. The piece debuted on television on The Sundance Channel and played at theaters in New York City. In 2010, Ron relocated to Wellington, Florida, to pursue filmmaking full time. He founded Docutainment Films, which has produced four full-length documentaries and has several upcoming pieces in pre-production. The FilmRise/Netflix film Harry and Snowman tells the true story of Harry deLeyer and Snowman, a slaughter-bound horse of unknown breeding that deLeyer purchased at the New Holland Auction in Pennsylvania for just $80. Together, the pair wrote their own rags-to-riches story, winning prestigious show jumping competitions. The film premiered at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in 2015 before opening to general release in September of 2016. It was a New York Times “Critic’s Pick” and won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at both the Nantucket and Prescott Film Festivals in 2015. Harry and Snowman ultimately became one of 2016’s top-grossing theatrical documentaries. In 2018, Ron completed Life in the Doghouse, another FilmRise/Netflix production that chronicles the work of equestrians Danny Robertshaw and Ron Danta, who together have rescued over 11,000 abused, abandoned and starving dogs. Danny & Ron’s Rescue finds safe homes for the rescues through their network of horse people and attending horse shows. The film premiered on Netflix in June 2019 and was lauded by the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, who urged her fans and followers to see the film and support Danny & Ron’s Rescue. Ron will donate all the net proceeds from his film to dog charities across the country. He is committed to producing only stories he cares about deeply and looks to craft character-driven pieces which inspire and warm the heart. Topics of Discussion: [:25] About today’s guest. [1:43] Ron Davis’ high-level success in New York’s publishing world before he followed his dreams to become a filmmaker. [6:06] How Ron’s first film, Pageant, served as an affirmation that he was on the right path. [7:49] Why Ron’s cinematographer for his first film, Pageant, Clay Westervelt, ultimately decided to work with him as a first-time filmmaker. [9:27] Ron discusses making tough decisions based on instincts, how he gets through stressful situations, and the challenges inherent in filming a documentary. [17:50] Prior to interviewing someone on film, how does Ron help them to relax and speak naturally on-camera about their story? [21:24] Ron reflects on HBO’s decision to not produce Harry and Snowman. [22:42] Ron speaks about the importance of embracing hard work and trusting your instincts. [24:22] Ron speaks about the crucial role of a director in the filmmaking process. [28:40] What keeps Ron motivated? [32:01] Ron shares some of his memories from creating his huge success, Harry and Snowman. [36:05] How did Ron help Harry to open up for the film? [jbox color="grey" radius ="2"] The Momentous Minute with Tim Caron Today's Momentous Minute is with Tim Caron, the owner of Allegiate Gym and performance engineer at Momentous, the sports nutrition company on a mission to clean up the supplement industry. Today's question is do we really need to supplement with protein sources like protein powders and why? Tim Caron: We wish we lived in a perfect world where the reality is we can get all of our protein needs met by food. The unfortunate thing is we don't. People are busy, athletes are on the go, if your training goal is always to be in a net positive in regards to your amino acid pool, but it's also really hard to get a full complete meal after your workout. Now when we're looking at post-workout, a really big benefit in terms of recovery is having bio-availability and actual proteins that digest quickly. Things like whey protein and plant-based protein, they actually digest quicker and in terms of getting your amino acid pool replenished to be in net positive in terms of overall protein, so you can build muscle. Protein supplements do make a big impact. If we're really trying to get the maximum out of our training, we need to make sure that we're having the recovery aspect dialed in afterwards. And just having a convenient, useful tool to get that protein need met, that does make it necessary. [/jbox] Get value from the podcast? Then, please take a minute to review the show. Ron’s business is built on the strategy of “wholesaling” houses, and he mentors investors all over North America on how to use his strategies for their own investment portfolios. In this portion of the episode, you will learn: How Ron got started in real estate when he was a broke mechanic, and how he was able to grow his business to become ultra-wealthy. My friend Ron has a long history of being in bands with ridiculous names that become popular. My friend Ron has a long history of being in bands with ridiculous names that become popular. We've got Weekend Nachos. We've got Bongripper. There's something to be said for the idea of making yourself laugh in your creative work - and sometimes that strikes a nerve with other people as well. In fact, when I was standing outside of the Metro for Bongripper's recent show, there was a Jimmy Buffett concert at Wrigley Field just down the street. A cadre of Hawaiian-shirt clad Parrotheads hurried past me - only to stop in front of the Metro and loudly exclaim in excitement upon seeing the name "Bongripper" in giant letters across the marquee. Hopefully they checked it out. But Bongripper isn't just a band with a clever name. They've pulled together an incredibly loyal following of people who like slow and heavy riffs and long songs. Check out this conversation with Ron to hear: How Bongripper creates songs - and how they think about the relationship between structure, riffs, and the overall texture of the song. And - the frustrations of practicing 20 minute songs while everyone is counting each part differently. How Ron listens to music and records, and how he processes different styles of music as an analytical musician Ron's top pop music recommendations, including Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Tove Styrke Oh, and definitely check out Bongripper's new album "Terminal" as well. After graduating college with a Fine Arts degree, Ron saw the world through two distinct lenses: the Israeli military, and a ballet company he joined after serving in his early 20’s. He traveled around the world, performing with two companies over nearly 15 years before finding himself in New York City and wanting to make a career transition. This is where he began to discover his talent for baking. From never having baked a professional cake to founding Ron Ben-Israel Cakes, Ron shares the path and experiences that got him there. His practical and disciplined approach to growth illustrates the level of passion, dedication, and humble learning that successful pastry chefs possess. About Ron Ben-Israel Ron Ben-Israel is a renowned pastry chef originally from Israel and currently based in New York. Ron is the founder of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes, where he and his team create delectable cakes for luxury events. From 2011-2013 hosted a Food Network show Sweet Genius, and was also a judge on the network’s reality competition series, Cake Wars. Ron lives in Arizona with Andrea, his wife of 25 years and they are the parents of seven children. What We'll Cover: The type of engineering Ron specializes in and how he went from being an employee to a one-man consulting, design and implementation firm. Dispelling the myth that scientists like engineers are less believing or religious than others. The role inspiration played in the process of starting his business. The process Ron used for putting together a business plan and the importance of writing in that process. The pattern of the Doctrine of Christ: faith, repentance, making covenants and receiving the Holy Ghost. The process of covenants and “binding ourselves to act” by making and keeping promises to God. How we can practice creating things (tasks, projects, our day, etc.) spiritually before we move forward and create m in actuality. How and why effective prayer means real communication with Heavenly Father. What it’s like to truly hear the Spirit inspiring your thoughts and action. The relationship between decision making and “binding ourselves to act”. How Ron prayed for help with a challenging client project and was led to solve a previously unsolvable mechanical plate structure problem. How to fast to learn from what has happened in the past rather than for something we want to happen in the future. How we will still experience challenges even when we are worthy and that challenges do not mean we are out of favor with God. How Ron uses journaling to aid in the revelatory process and to see the hand of God in his life and in his business. What evidence you can look for that indicates the Holy Ghost is active in your life and in your business. Why it’s important to act on the first prompting from the Holy Ghost and how to recognize those promptings when you receive them. How to ask and answer the question each day, “How am I going to exercise my faith?” The spiritual practices that keep the Holy Ghost active in our lives. What the revelatory process looks like: confusion, questions, studying/pondering, conclusions, decide, make an attempt, then there is light. How we become what the Lord wants us to be.
