Welcome to Monday Night Live! Join Derek Arden on this week's Monday Night Live as he sits down with Patricia Fripp, a renowned international speaker and celebrated coach. Patricia brings a wealth of experience as a top-tier speaker with accolades from both the National Speakers Association (NSA) in the U.S. and the Professional Speaking Association (PSA) in the U.K. Known for her lifelong commitment to learning, Patricia shares her recent experiences attending prestigious speaking and writing events, from the Professional Speechwriters Association conference in Washington, D.C., to an exclusive seminar with acclaimed consultant Alan Weiss in Las Vegas. Throughout this engaging conversation, Patricia and Derek explore the art and science of crafting impactful messages and the nuances of effective communication. Patricia dives into her observations from the Professional Speechwriters Association, where she met top-tier speechwriters, including those who have crafted messages for U.S. Presidents. These writers provided insights into the meticulous process of speech crafting, with a focus on the importance of every word, the visual setup of the speech environment, and the power of tailored messaging for different audiences. Patricia also reflects on her recent time with Alan Weiss, the prolific author and business consultant, renowned for his unconventional yet practical approaches to consulting and client engagement. She recounts Alan's principles on how to pivot conversations, use storytelling, and leverage anecdotes to resonate deeply with audiences and clients. Alan's technique of offering clients "options of yes" — presenting three tiers of services — is a prime example of his strategic approach to enhancing perceived value and encouraging clients to invest more heavily in themselves. Exploring the Power of Language with Patricia FrippPatricia Fripp, a celebrated speaker and communication coach, delves into the meticulous world of professional speechwriting and the importance of intentional language. Sharing insights from recent engagements, including the Professional Speechwriters Association, Patricia emphasizes that the most effective messages are carefully crafted, considering both content and setting. She recounts how iconic speakers like President Obama collaborated intensively with their speechwriters, highlighting the importance of every word, gesture, and visual setting in delivering impactful addresses. Lessons from Alan Weiss:Adapting and Engaging with ClientsIn discussing her recent seminar experience with Alan Weiss, Patricia highlights essential takeaways for anyone working with clients or audiences. Alan, known for his direct approach and deep expertise, advocates for a fluid conversational style that pivots based on the listener's needs. His "options of yes" strategy — presenting clients with a choice of service packages — encourages investment while subtly guiding clients toward the ideal middle-ground option. Patricia and Derek explore how consultants can use similar techniques to add value and build trust with clients. Mastering Spontaneity: Preparation Meets PerformancePatricia's anecdotes underscore the paradox of spontaneity in professional speaking. While great speeches often appear off-the-cuff, they are typically the result of intense preparation and a repertoire of carefully chosen stories and quotes. Citing insights from comedians and writers, Patricia stresses the importance of being "perpetually prepared," ready to adapt to audience needs while maintaining a polished, natural delivery. The Art of Constructive Conflict: Insights from “The Odd Couple” SeminarsPatricia reflects on her years of collaboration with Alan Weiss in "The Odd Couple" seminars, where they often took opposing viewpoints to spark dynamic discussions. She explains how constructive conflict can enrich presentations, engaging audiences through debate and contrasting perspectives.

Patricia Fripp is an expert on how to give better presentations, and she shares some of her secrets with me on “Aim Higher” this week. She just recently co-authored the book “Deliver Unforgettable Presentations,” and it's filled with step-by-step instructions on how to become a world-class public speaker. During our talk, she makes the great point that everyone can benefit from being a better presenter, even if you're just leading a team meeting. How people remember what you say depends as much on your delivery as on the content itself. And Patricia's advice can help you dramatically improve the way you deliver information.

Your conversations and presentations are critical to achieving the desired results, especially in sales. Your choice of words and how you present them makes all the difference. I have the honor of hosting the amazing Patricia Fripp in this episode. She is a presentation skills expert, award-winning speaker, & speech coach. Today, she will teach us how we can improve our presentation and communication skills to help us achieve our goals. Grab your notebook and pen. You'll need to take notes. Why is it essential to pause during a presentation/ speech? It gives the audience a chance to understand. When people know what they are talking about, they tend to speak too fast, and the audience may fail to know what they are talking about. You pause to think about what comes next when having an unscripted conversation. Magical you to help you present better You need to rehearse your speech to the extent you are comfortable with or without the presentation slides. Also, it would be best if you were prepared in case you are required to have a flip. Patricia's inner superpower Patricia believes her inner superpower is the ability to listen to a speech/presentation and immediately pick how she can improve it. Nobody wants to make mistakes, but we all do…emerging speakers and experienced professionals alike. In this episode, Darren and Mark talk with their mentor, Hall Of Fame Speaker Patricia Fripp, and co-author of their new book DELIVER UNFORGETTABLE PRESENTATIONS. They discuss and expound on some common mistakes, and reveal a few others that presenters fail to recognize or acknowledge. This conversation sheds some light on simple adjustments that any speaker can make to transform speech into an unforgettable presentation. SNIPPETS: There are no mistakes, save one: the failure to learn from a mistake – Robert Fripp Work harder for your client than everyone else does Customize to incorporate the unique differences of every audience Don't use language in that you would not use in daily conversation Prepare for the responsibility of speaking before getting the assignment Sameness is far more than a boring monotone. Avoid it Pause. There is not ‘nothing' in silence Don't cause cognitive overload by giving too much information For technical presentations, start simple and build up to the advanced
Stuff, things, literally, simply . . . how often do you use these words when communicating with your team? “Naughty words” like these might be popping up in your speaking more often than you think, as I quickly learned during this week's podcast with Patricia Fripp! As an executive speech coach, Hall of Fame keynote speaker, and the first female president of the National Speakers Association, Patricia knows all the secrets for how manufacturing leaders can improve their speaking skills and find the magic words for inspiring action, creating well-crafted communications, and showcasing the best possible version of themselves and their organization. 0:45 – The best manufacturing leaders are the ones with the best communication 5:45 - “7% is what you say, 30% is how you say it, and 55% is how you look” – is there any truth to this? 8:00 - If your words are well crafted and well-delivered, you can change your organization 8:11 – In a busy industry like manufacturing, it can be easy to lose sight of the importance of words in our everyday lives 8:22 – When there's a miscommunication, leaders might assume the other person just didn't understand, but it's often an issue with words and phrasing 8:36 – “Stuff” is a rubbish word 9:00 – By being specific with your word choices, you inspire confidence and build credibility 10:00 – “If it weren't a thing, what would it be?” Use specific words to replace unclear words like stuff or things 10:30 – Specific communication is especially important when you're speaking to someone who doesn't speak English as their first language 11:57 – If it's not fruit, it's not a bunch! Use numbers and specifics instead 13:16 – When possible, use shorter sentences to communicate and keep your communications to one idea per sentence 13:40 – Speak with the aim of being remembered and repeated 14:20 – By taking a pause, you give yourself a chance to breathe and allow the other person time to process 15:11 – “Literally” and “simply” are also naughty words! 18:48 – To improve your communications, record yourself and listen to the words you frequently use 21:00 – Depending on their background and culture, people may express themselves differently 22:00 - To inspire commitment and quality, ask them if their work would be good enough to sell to their own mother 23:00 – Ask as an advocate for your audience 24:52 – Every leader needs to show the person they are beyond their position Connect with Patricia Fripp Website Fripp VT

A: And they would be-- one, open your presentation with impact. And of course, close on a high. The first 30 seconds and the last 30 seconds of any presentation have a great impact. The purpose of the opening of your presentation is to arouse interest in the subject. Key Takeaways: “Open and close with impact, have a simple structure, tell good stories, focus on the audience, and add specific language.” - Patricia Fripp “Although you might be brilliant, have a great grasp of your content, that doesn't mean you can put it together into a powerful and persuasive presentation. Plus, it takes a lot longer than most people realize to create a masterpiece that looks as if you're just delivering it spontaneously.” - Patricia Fripp “By speaking as an audience advocate! You look at your message from the point of view of the audience. To say our new strategy will be great for shareholders has no interest to employees unless they are shareholders.” - Patricia Fripp “Every presentation is built around a premise, a big idea, a central theme.” - Patricia Fripp “Sometimes you sell the topic, sometimes you sell the result.” - Patricia Fripp “Because although we use words to communicate, our audience sees what we say in our stories. They can often see themselves in the stories you tell, and find specificity builds credibility.” - Patricia Fripp Ways to Connect with Patricia Fripp: Website: https://fripp.com/handouts/ Ways to Connect with Sarah E. Why you have to check out today's podcast: Learn about the importance of translating what matters to your customer into something of real value, like measurable dollars Discover what the book, Selling Value, is trying to show salespeople Find out how the Guerilla series was able to move a lot of people, including product managers, product marketing, and other VAs “If you're closing more than about 70% of your opportunities, you're not charging enough.” – Orvel Ray Wilson Topics Covered: 01:55 – The story of how Mark and Orvel Ray met 02:40 – Working with Mark for his book, Selling Value: Taking note of what's important to your customers 06:19 – What the book is showing salespeople how to do + how the ‘Will I? In which one?' concept came to exist 10:03 – Orvel Ray's friend, Jordan, who was able to close an $85,000 deal as he learns from Mark's book 14:59 – Why should salespeople and pricing people care about selling value? 18:14 – Send Orvel Ray a message and get one free hour of free consultation on how to become a speaker and/or an author. 19:20 – Orvel Ray's piece of pricing advice 21:43 – What anchoring is all about Key Takeaways: “Salespeople need to understand how this really works, not only to convey and do the math and show them that this is a good investment, but to do that in terms that are important to them.” – Orvel Ray Wilson “I might have 100 good reasons why you should buy my product, but your decision is going to hinge on the three or four reasons that you think are important. And if you can isolate what those are and sell to those, then two things happen – one, the sales process is a lot simpler, and your offering is going to be irresistible.” – Orvel Ray Wilson, Guerilla Selling “Many times, we fail, we lose the sale, not because our product isn't a good fit, or because we don't have superior technology, or aggressive pricing, but simply because we haven't got the customer to make the ‘will I?' decision in the first place.” – Orvel Ray Wilson “Just putting this technology in the hands of your sales team is going to make an immediate and measurable impact, as I've already said, and certainly more so than any other sales book I've read recently; and I've read them all.” – Orvel Ray Wilson “Build value, include everything, load up the table like it's Thanksgiving dinner, and then if you have to talk about reducing your fees, you can take things off the table and still defend your value.” – Orvel Ray Wilson People / Resources Mentioned: Selling Value: https://www.amazon.com/Selling-Value-Deals-Higher-Prices/dp/1737655217/ Houghton Mifflin:https://www.hmhco.com/ Guerilla Selling: https://www.amazon.com/Guerrilla-Selling-Unconventional-Weapons-Increasing/dp/0395578205/ Impact Pricing: https://www.amazon.com/Impact-Pricing-Blueprint-Driving-Profits/dp/1483489701/ Patricia Fripp: https://www.youtube.com/user/PatriciaFripp Connect with Orvel Ray Wilson: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/orvelray/ Email: orvelray@guerillagroup.com Website: https://guerrillagroup.com/ Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

This week we are joined by Henry DeVries, Scott Love & Mark LeBlanc, authors of "Rainmaker Confidential " to discuss, "How To Make It Rain The Rainmaker Confidential Way". You cannot ask your most successful competitors and peers their secrets of rainmaking. That would be awkward, impractical, and sometimes illegal. So, Henry DeVries, Scott Love, and Mark LeBlanc did it for you. The three authors of the new book Rainmaker Confidential will be interviewed by Patricia Fripp, Hall of Fame speaker and new Indie Books author. She will grill them on how they went behind closed doors and asked the tough questions. She will find out how they asked more than one hundred successful rainmakers what they are investing more in, what they are cutting back on, and what are their go-to strategies. Today's show covers the specifics of capturing the attention of others with your words. Join us to learn more! Eva DeVirgilis is an actress and makeup artist. She created a TEDx talk that went viral with nearly one million views. HER Magazine recognized her talk as one of their “Top inspirational TEDtalks to Help You Change Your Life.” Eva has the secret to getting your message so clean, targeted, and engaging that it has the potential to go viral, or at least help you speak in ways that cause people to sit up and take notice. In one-on-one conversations, a boardroom, and groups from 10-10,000, Eva has helpful tips for a tight, focused, engaging message to attract people to you and what you do. She shares specifics about prep work, breathing exercises, and creating your hook. Her coaching is the secret weapon for many top-earning executives, industry leaders, politicians, and influencers, and she empowers many thought leaders to communicate at their highest potential. She brings 20 years of experience in TV, comedy, and business to help you find the creative, passionate, dynamic speaker within you. Eva has taught Creative Presentations at VCU School of Business and loves to help people tell their stories. Show Highlights: How Eva's path unfolded to merge her passions of performing, being a makeup artist, and reaching people around the world with her TEDx talk How Eva's talk helped her become a creative communications consultant to help others share their message Where to begin with any talk or presentation: Think about your audience-- What do you want to make them do? What do you want to make them feel? “Hook them right away, make them feel something, and compel them to action.” How Eva's plan for her TEDx talk narrowed her message to women to forgive themselves, accept themselves, and stop saying, “I'm sorry” What Eva learned from Darren Lacroix and Craig Valentine: “Your audience is always listening to WIIFM radio.” (“What's in it for me?”) The bottom line is that it's all about the audience. How to hook your audience: A short, engaging story A compelling question A shocking fact or statistic A compelling quote An unusual prop Humor What do you want your audience to do and feel? Have an objective that you want them to do (Eva explains how to use action verbs.) Have an objective that you want them to feel (Eva explains what words to use.) Why you need a script for a talk or presentation How to use your voice as a tool to comfort, activate, and engage How to do prep work to center yourself with breathing exercises (4-7-8 breaths) and stretching How to go to your big idea after your hook: Tell the audience why you are there. Use 14 words or less. Keep it simple. (Eva explains how to use Patricia Fripp's formula: “Every _____ can ______ by _____.”) Why your intro should come after the hook and big idea Why you should chunk your main points into three sections: Use the 10-20-30 rule for presentations. “Don't be the sideshow to your slideshow.” Back up your main points with evidence, a personal story, or play. Why your presentation bullet points need to go away How to wrap up with a Q & A by asking, “What questions do you have for me?” How to state your call to action in 14 words or less and use a DTM (drop the mike) statement for your final moment Remember that your final statement is about your audience, especially those who haven't heard you before and may not hear you again.
