What do you do when someone tells you a story that isn't true? Maybe you were there or you heard it from someone else differently. As a leader, knowing how to handle stories (true or not) is so important for the integrity of your team. Having your values plastered on the office wall is not living by them. Wanting to know how to infuse them into your business so your team embodies them as well? That requires one of our people power skills — storytelling. The best way to showcase your values is to live by them and tell your personal story around them. Storytelling is an essential skill in leadership. Last week Kindra shared the science behind storytelling and it led us right into this episode where she breaks down the “how to” of storytelling. If you stay in the mode of “I'm not a storyteller,” I have bad news folks: Your leadership will suffer. Storytelling is the key to change. It's almost impossible to elicit change without a good story. (a true one I might add!) Kindra broke down what every good story needs and gently reminded us to start paying attention to the stories around us, yes, even the uncomfortable ones! We spoke about how stories build confidence and connection and how we can start today to gather and tell better stories. “The shortest distance between two people is a story.” My coach Harris says this frequently, and I find it true over and over. In person, in an email, a LinkedIn post, a TikTok…stories change us AND shape our leadership. I‘ve watched Kindra Hall for a long-time as a mentor from afar. Someone who's doing what I want to do. Author, speaker, and storytelling expert, her stories have impacted me in profound ways (that she didn't even realize!). I was thrilled she joined me for another podcast episode. We really got into the science of storytelling and it was such a great reminder to me that storytelling is quite literally a part of our DNA. It's how we evolved as humans (and how we continue to!). We shared laughs about keynote speaking and how people often overlook stories as a form of learning. But as a teacher and keynote speaker, I've seen stories awaken sleepy students and executives! But not just to entertain, but as a powerful leadership tooI. I loved how Kindra put it: “Would a scorpion not use their poison? Would a Zebra not use their stripes?” It's a superpower only humans have and to say you don't need story is to say you're not human. I'm currently reading Stories that Stick by Kindra Hall. In it, she mentions that “story” has become such a common term that people use it for everything, even if it's not a story. I feel the same thing has been done to the term “repurposing.” See, when you repurpose something in the real world, you take it, you make changes to it, and you give it new life. You don't just lop a piece off of it and say you've repurposed it. But that's what many people consider repurposing today. “I'm going to clip 1 minute of this 60-minute conversation and call it repurposed.” That's why I'm excited to have Greg Wasserman on the show today. He helps us reframe repurposing, and talks about how AI can help us repurpose properly – and while I don't agree with everything he says, I like exploring different ideas. Top TakeawaysRepurposing content isn't just turning current content into other content. It's taking conversations and turning them into content, products, and more. Get creative! Greg uses his coaching calls and repurposes them into courses. How can you take conversations you're having and leverage them to get something tangible for your business? When it comes to leveraging AI, consider your creative comfort. Some people are more comfortable writing. Some feel better talking it out. Integrate AI into your current and best process! I've got to say, Charelle and I really enjoyed chatting about this one.As a book about storytelling, it should come as no surprise that in addition to laying out really helpful ideas and frameworks, Stories That Stick was super well-written and fun to read. This book is chock full of examples, questions, and prompts to get your wheels spinning. If you are someone who feels you don't have anything to say, or that your story isn't worth telling, by the time you finish Stories That Stick you will have stories in spades. Even though I'm someone who has always been interested in narrative and has found a lot of success in sharing stories with my audience, reading these prompts sent little sparks of inspiration shooting through my mind. Luckily, author Kindra Hall walks you through how to sift through your newfound pile of stories and choose which to tell and how. Stories That Stick was a joy to read and talk through with Charelle, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Listen in as Kindra breaks it down and shares a fun exercise you can do to see how many stories you're made up of and how those stories have shaped you. Fear, especially fear of failure, often comes from the stories we've subconsciously held onto for our entire lives. This leads to inaction, stagnancy, and a lack of growth. How can we overcome this? If we look at what influences us, there might be a story behind why we're influenced by those things… Listen in to hear Chase and Kindra's thoughts on this intriguing phenomenon. Kindra speaks on whether or not we need to be mindful of how our stories passively influence others. If you're struggling with the emotions from old stories and the struggle is keeping you stuck, ask yourself: Are there stories since that time that exhibit the characteristics that I want to become, that I'm working towards, or that I'm proud of? Wrapping up my series on Kindra Hall and the message from her new book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life. In this episode I'm joined by my co-host, Randy James, Medical Doctor, Functional Medicine expert, and my dear friend to discuss how we create and accept our stories and the conversation veers towards…striving and aspiring, and the tension between being ok and at peace and in essence, content, with the here and now. With who and how you are and what you have, right now. There is a big piece of all of us who can feel tired of the constant striving and just want to be at peace and have joy, now. And to that, we agree and desire as well. And yet, is that enough? Do we just find a good place of comfort and leave it at that. Coast from there on? Or is there a responsibility, to God, to others, to ourselves, to take what we have, and grow and give? Continually? As you'll hear, we feel there is. The issue is often simply the spirit of our striving. Like the old religious perspective, do we carry our belief like a song in our heart, or a burden on our back? If your striving gets to feeling like a burden, I'd say…stop. Maybe you need a time of rest. Or recalibration. If you are giving and serving and striving in bitterness, acting as a martyr, and wearing yourself out, you're likely not helping anyone too much. The goal is to give from a full heart. To grow and strive in joy. This is where you'll find us discussing and grappling with you in this episode. I'm back with best-selling author and the former Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine, Kindra Hall, to walk through her personal values, motives, and habits in the key areas of life fulfillment so we can hear what has driven and does drive her to lead us in the stories we write about our lives, and design a life that fulfills her. In episode 1042, the longest show I've ever published, Kindra and I talked about…story. Specifically the message in her new book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life. Here we go behind the scenes into the ever evolving story she is writing in her current life. The Cliff Notes I think you'll want to hear more about, regarding her spirituality she pondered that her purpose is easy when she understands it, but hard when she doesn't. A key for her health and wellness is to consider the most essential uses of her time. On mental health, Kindra said she is consistently paying attention to what is working, and what isn't. And being aware that what did work might not anymore. In work and career we got to talking about our propensity to feel we need to put in a solid week, 40 hours or whatever, when so often, as she said, "I can create magic in only 10." We ended on achievements and I think you'll be curious to hear how Kindra views her own story regarding what she wants to achieve, as she admits that she's currently aware the big achievements so often did not provide as much fulfillment as the achievements she wasn't even looking for, like yesterday's testimonial from a teacher about her child's character. Kindra is the 191st guest I've had on my show and is one of the most thoughtful and interesting conversationalist I've experienced. We recently had Kindra Hall on the podcast to share some wisdom about the path to becoming a paid professional speaker, and if you caught that episode, you know it was a goodie! Today we are recapping some of the most impactful points and reflections from that chat, and underlining the wisdom that Kindra was so generous with! Kindra is a great example of someone who is reaping the rewards of putting in the hard work, and it was clear in her story and our conversation how much can be achieved by setting a goal and following through. One of today's main takeaways was the benefit of zeroing in on speaking at associations when starting out, and we explore five reasons that should inspire you to prioritize this. We also get into the art of storytelling and, as an expert storyteller, Kindra unpacked the impact that the stories we tell ourselves has on our journey toward our goals. So if you want to hear all this and more, and get a running start towards earning the speaking fees of your dreams, tune in today!
We all wake up every day and participate in what we feel is simply our reality. Yet it's truly a storyline we've created, or accepted, or feel we are forced to live and in that case, agreed with and submitted to. For you, which is it? This is not some hoodoo guro motivation that life is make-believe and we simply decide to have it be something else better. That is offensive. But it is interesting how we live our daily lives and we let things like marriage, children, getting hired or fired from a job, an injury or even a windfall of money, totally change our story. If that's the case, can't we not only do things to change our stories for the better, but can we also change our perspective of our stories right away and make things better? And I have with me, Kindra Hall. Kindra is the best-selling author and the former Chief Storytelling Officer of SUCCESS Magazine, whose work and research teaches individuals and brands to harness and leverage the power of their stories. Her first book, Stories that Stick debuted at #2 on the Wall Street Journal Bestseller List and Forbes said it “may be the most valuable business book you read." Inc.com said her newest book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life is "the business book you need to read in 2022." I however read this new book, Choose Your Story, Change Your Life and felt it was a must-have conversation for…all of us. As humans. And what follows is my longest interview to date because the topics are so profoundly important. Find her book anywhere and connect with Kindra at kindrahall.com. Kindra Hall is a storyteller, acclaimed keynote speaker, and bestselling author of Stories that Stick: How Storytelling Can Captivate Customers, Influence Audiences, and Transform Your Business. She's here to remind you how important storytelling is, especially for your business. We all recognize the need for connection, now more than ever. And telling stories is an excellent way to connect with people, but being a great storyteller is not easy. Like most important things, great storytelling requires strategy and effort. It's more than simply reporting information. You've got to feel it. By feel, we mean you have to care and communicate emotion in your story. That doesn't mean sharing your deepest, darkest, most private pieces of yourself. It could be fundamental, like feeling frustrated, nervous, or curious. In this episode, Kindra offers tips on what makes for good storytelling and how you can practice telling them. According to her, there are four critical components to storytelling, and you can start using them right now. Whether you give weekly presentations or are working on your very first, Kindra's advice for telling better stories can only help.
