What if you could re-imagine schooling to be student-centered? Build from the ground up?  That's what Connect Academy did when it was given carte blanche to re-imagine schooling for students in the Poway District.  It re-imagined: How we organize learning experiences, by making them interdisciplinary, and community focused.   How we organize learners, by making classes mixed grade level, and inclusive of all abilities.  How we organize the school day, by creating extended blocks of time, and project-based opportunities.  How we CONNECT students, by connecting them meaningfully in daily advisories, and homerooms.  Connect Academy isn't some fancy prep school built for elite families that live in the Hollywood Hills; it's a public, inclusive school built for kids of all backgrounds, nationalities, and socio-economic status.  Learn more about their journey from learning experience designers/teachers Joe Gizzo and Karen Rogers, and you can build in these student-centered elements in your classroom or school.   Learn more about Connect Academy: https://connectacademy.powayusd.com/ , Twitter (X): https://twitter.com/Connect_PUSD, Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/connect_academy_pusd/ & https://www.instagram.com/naturaldesigners/  Connect with Karen: LinkedIn, Twitter (X), Personal Site: https://sites.google.com/powayusd.com/karen-elaine/home  Karen's Bio: Karen Elaine Rogers is a visionary who focuses on big picture and deeper purpose. Having directed multiple early childhood centers, started or revamped children's education programs, and pastoring a large and growing non-profit for families, she also fostered and then adopted many children in the first 20 years of her career. As an outside the box thinker who thrives in flexibility and clear purpose, KarenElaine has spent the last 10 years in public education. Focused on behavior modification and music therapy in her time in special education, she then piloted a project and brain based TK/K program in one of Poway Unified School District's Title 1 schools, and then helped launch the district's first hybrid Independent Study school while recently being awarded as Teacher of the Year. Strategizing tasks by building teams & investing in those closest to her, KarenElaine leads with empathy and focuses on team strengths. Her creative and innovative mind is constantly impassioned to dream, collaborate or share. Possessing a way with words, her ability to weave a great story, articulate vision, and influence an audience are what inspires. She aims to transform education & be part of life's most exciting pursuits with women, children and families while living simply with nature! Joe's Bio: Joe Gizzo has been a teacher in Poway Unified School District for 24 years. He teaches middle school digital arts and computer science at Connect Academy, PUSD's innovative, hybrid school. Joe strives to build empathy in students to help to create a school culture where everyone is welcomed, valued, and respected. Joe's students have won many awards, including Digital Art awards from the SD County Fair and Museum of Photographic Arts, Jostens yearbook awards, Outstanding Activities and Leadership Program awards, and the California Association of Student Leaders Service Award. Joe's awards include the Bob Burton Spirit Award, Area G Service Award, SD County Fair Teacher of the Year, School & District Teacher of the Year, honored as one of San Diego County's top Teachers, Teen Ink's Educator of the Year, and California's designee for the Warren Shull Award. What is truly remarkable is Joe has accomplished all he has while battling a rare & incurable auto-immune disease. His story is truly inspirational for students and teachers alike.

To the Classroom: Conversations with Researchers & Educators

My guest today is Dr. Elizabeth Sulzby whose research focus is on early language and literacy development in Pre-Kindergarten. She talks about research studies she did with preschoolers in NYC years ago where teachers do repeated readings of storybooks—even those with complex language and story structure—and study children's rereadings and retellings. These studies formed the basis for her emergent reading classification scheme. We also talk a bit about emergent writing development in prekindergarten and its parallels to reading development. Later, I'm joined by my colleagues Gina Dignon and bilingual educator Clarisa Leal for a conversation about practical takeaways for young children and multilingual learners.****Read a full transcript of this episode and learn more about Jennifer Serravallo.AccessEmergent Literacy: Writing and ReadingMore on Dr. Sulzby's KLP Literature ProgramThe Reading Strategies Book 2.0****More about this episode's guest:Elizabeth Sulzby is best known for her pioneering work in emergent literacy. Prior to coming to the University Michigan in 1986, Sulzby was associate professor with tenure at Northwestern University. During 1996-97, she was a visiting professor at Leiden University, the Netherlands, where she collaborates with A.G. Bus and Marinus H. Van IJzendoorn in studies of attachment and emergent literacy. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and her M.Ed. from the College of William and Mary. She did post-B.A. study in philosophy at Harvard University after receiving her B.A. in philosophy and English from Birmingham-Southern College. Sulzby is the author, with W. H. Teale, of Emergent literacy: Writing and Reading, and has published her research on children's emergent reading and writing development in numerous journals.  Her studies of emergent bookreading and emergent writing have been conducted with diverse groups of children aged 2-7, including African American, Spanish-English bilingual immigrant, Appalachian, and European American children.Research in emergent literacy has led Sulzby in a number of related directions. She has studied the transition from emergent to conventional literacy, designing techniques for assessing literacy from toddlers to early elementary grades in a manner consistent with emergent literacy insights. Her studies, with Bus, van IJzendoorn, Teale, and Kaderavek have bridged the parent-child intervention studies and children's independent emergent readings. Her research has been funded by the Spencer Foundation, NIE/OERI, the Research Foundation of NCTE, and by various computer and software companies, including IBM, Apple Computer, and Jostens. Sulzby is a Fellow in the APA and NCRLL and has served on many editorial and research review boards. Recently, she served on OERI's advisory group for a center for early literacy agenda, NCEE's New Standards Primary Literacy Panel and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council's Committee on the Prevention of Reading Difficulties in Young Children (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). Special thanks to Alex Van Rose for audio editing this episode. Support this show:(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TotheClassroom) Support the show

Amanda, Nick and Ryan are back digesting a ton of baseball news centered around the negotiations between the Owners and the Players. We break down why nobody should be on the owners' side of these negotiations and just how bad this is for baseball. We discuss the shortened season, the prorated salaries, and the numerous impacts felt by the minor league players due to Owner selfishness. We then are joined by special guest Matt Weyrich of NBCSportsWashington. Matt, Nick and Ryan talk about a plethora of baseball topics including the likelihood of a season and health implications, rule changes, mental health in sports, and the awesome DCNatShack. We wrap the show by talking about the Nats' unveiling the World Series rings and the arbitrary diamond selection process by Jostens in one of the funniest segments we've done. Listen in! In the Middle of It with Amy Kelly, The Ish Girl

TEACHERS SAVE THE WORLD This is my son’s senior year. So far, classes have been canceled. Prom has been canceled. We’re anticipating that his Baccalaureate ceremony and graduation ceremony will probably not be far behind. Making that loss even more profound is the fact that his class helped open his high school as freshmen, the only students in the school. A grade was added each year, and this year is the first they’ll have a graduating class. TEARS AND CHEERS It’s something I’ve been grieving for him, that he doesn’t really understand, not having seen any classes go before him. And until yesterday, I didn’t know that I’m not the only one. As he and I drove up to the school to pick up his cap and gown and graduation invitations, I realized that a whole other group is profoundly affected too. We rounded the curve toward the drop off lane behind the school cafeteria and were greeted with the sight of several teachers and counselors, cheering, holding up signs, and waving as car after car passed through. They greeted my son by name, from their socially-distanced posts and told him they missed him, told him to let his younger sister know that she was missed as well. They tucked a “Congrats to our Senior” yard sign in our back seat and sent us up the line to the masked and gloved people from Jostens, who handed out the green, gold and black packages with military precision. And as I pulled away, I wept. For the efforts to make this special. For the loss that my son will remember and tell his own children and grandchildren about. THE HEROES OF THE DAY By the time we left the parking lot, my heart was swelling with gratitude. Because the heroes of the day were those teachers, who showed up – again – for my kids. The same way they’ve been doing since the beginning of this crisis. Much has been made so far of the healthcare workers on the front lines fighting COVID one patient at a time. And rightly so. But in this moment, I have to say that teachers are going to go down in history for saving the world, too, during this crisis. Every lesson plan, every zoom call, every assignment graded and returned, has created a sense of normalcy for our kids. Has created a routine and a structure that helps parents manage time at home with their kids. And that? It’s invaluable. TEACHERS – WE SEE YOU Add to it the actual care and concern and I daresay even love that these teachers have for you kids and mine, and it’s enough to bring tears to my eyes – again. If you are a teacher out there, know that you are seen and appreciated. Not because we parents don’t know what to do with our kids during this 24/7 enforced togetherness. Not because we’re stumped by the math they’re doing and are grateful you know how to teach them what’s what. No. It’s because we see how much love you have for our children. We see how you are juggling all the things in your house AND helping us juggle what’s in ours. We see you learning new tech, adapting and modifying your instruction and still managing to connect in personal ways with your students even when you’re not face-to-face. So thank you. Know that you are heroes. Understand that you’ve made this so much easier than it would have been otherwise. We see you. And we’re forever grateful.

Gifted with the ability to create authentic connections with his audience, Mark Scharenbroich is a Hall of Fame keynote speaker who began his career in a comedy troupe in the mid-1970s. His career catapulted to the stars when the Jostens award-winning film, “The Greatest Days of your Life…(so far)” featuring Mark was viewed by millions of high school students in the 1980s. Little did he know that the success of the film would lead him on the path to becoming one of the top-rated keynote speakers in America. To Mark, connections are everything and he has built a career speaking about how to create authentic connections in the workplace and between companies and customers. Mark’s signature story, ‘Nice Bike,’ is more than just a bunch of clever words strung together. It’s a metaphor and a memorable principle that, in Mark’s words, ‘helps create raving fans one customer at a time.’ Interestingly, Mike’s entire brand stems from his ‘Nice Bike’ story. He even wrote a book about it called (https://nicebike.com/about-the-book/) . In this episode of Standing Ovation, you’ll hear the Nice Bike story in all its glory. You’ll also discover where this incredible story came from, how it’s evolved and what’s next for this truly brilliant Hall of Fame keynote speaker. Find out about: The remarkable genesis story of Nice Bike Why you shouldn’t be afraid to be spontaneous and try new things  How Mark applies the Nice Bike philosophy to different audiences An insight into Mark’s approach to preparing stories for the stage How specific lines in the Nice Bike story have evolved over time Why speakers need to be more open to coaching Techniques to paint a picture in the mind of your audience Why some speaker’s stories don’t land as powerfully as they hoped Quotes from the episode: “We all have two core needs: Number one, we need to belong. Number two, we all need to hear, ‘nice bike.’” “If you can find a signature story that people remember, that's relevant to them, and has a hook that’s memorable three days, three months or three years later - now you're cooking.” Connect with Mark Scharenbroich    Website (https://nicebike.com/)    Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/nicebikemark)    Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/nicebikemark/)    LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-scharenbroich-sharon-brock-6b4009a/)    YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/markscharenbroich)    Twitter (https://twitter.com/NiceBIkeMark) 2 Key Questions What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given about the speaking business? “The obvious one that most people hear is to write a book. It helps you frame your writing but more than anything else, its value added. It helps with your negotiation. I’ll throw in 100 books for everybody in the audience and personally sign them. That helps from a negotiation standpoint and it adds value. My second piece of advice is to be open to coaching.” Who is your dream guest for Standing Ovation? “Jeanne Robertson is in a league all by herself: her storytelling, her humor, her heart, and her work ethic. I asked Jenny, “Does it drive you crazy when people steal your material? And she said, ‘Well, you know, number one, they can’t do it as well as I can. And number two, I'm constantly writing - I'm staying ahead of them.” Please Support Our Show Sponsors: The sponsor of this episode is Content 10x (https://www.content10x.com/) , the content repurposing experts who have a unique service just for speakers called Talk 10x, where they transform your presentation into a suite of unique content to help spread your message.
