Episode 574: Games that use movement points Episode release date is April 2, 2025 Show Notes This week we are doing a one episode discussion of games that use movement points as a movement. What are movement points you ask? Well, movement points regulate how far a player can move their pieces during the game. For example, players are given a specific number of "points" that can be spent to move game pieces. Different spaces or terrains on the game board may cost varying amounts of movement points to enter. Players may receive a set number of movement points each turn that can be spread across multiple pieces. Those points could fluctuate depending on card draws or dice rolls. Sometimes movement points can be part of a larger pool of actions, and movement can be part of or one of those actions. In short, movement points provide a structured way to manage in game movement while adding a tactical element to gameplay. So let's make it a point to move to the game table and discuss some games. Carnegie is definitely a good game, I think it's tough to outcompete some of the newer ones though. It was a popular blip for a sec, then kinda floated down to the lower mid of bgg pack. It's still a good game, solid 7. Maracaibo would also have a choice of action to move your ship a certain distance also for triggering spaces. Not sure if that's totally true movement points, but fairly close The only other ones I can even think of would be troop movement for war games, like War of the Ring/for Arrakis or Axis & Allies. War of the Ring is awesome! Great 2p strategy game. War for Arrakis, same designer, basically the truncated version of War of the Ring in Dune! TRAPPED IN THE THREE-RING CIRCUS OF YOUR MINDYour consciousness is being hijacked right now—and you don't even realize it.While you're reading these words, an invisible tug-of-war is happening inside you. The outside world demands attention. Your thoughts race alongside. Emotions surge from nowhere. This constant pull in three directions isn't chaos—it's your default state.Michael Singer calls it the "three-ring circus," and it's the greatest magic trick ever performed: making you believe that these distractions ARE you, when in reality, they're just the show you're watching. What if everything keeping you from peace isn't something you need to fix, but something you need to stop entertaining? The truth is both simpler and more radical than most spiritual teachings dare admit: your consciousness—your true essence—is being dragged around like a dog on three leashes, and freedom isn't about gaining something new, but letting go of what never belonged to you in the first place.Ready to step outside the circus tent? Let's pull back the curtain on what's really happening in the arena of your awareness...First ring: the outside world.Everything you see, hear, feel.Open your eyes—it's there.Close them—it's gone.Your senses grab light, sound, whatever, and your mind builds the picture inside, not out there like you think.Second ring: thoughts. They're running through your head, and you're aware of them.Same consciousness that's taking in the world view - it is tracking these too.No split. You can look at something and think about it—same awareness, doing both.Third ring: emotions. Now, these aren't thoughts or thought forms. You can picture a boat in your mind, see words, hear that voice inside your head talking to you—that's thoughts.Emotions? They're different. They're vibrations, feelings, shifts in energy patterns you pick up.Not words, just raw force. But they're strong, and they latch onto your consciousness, pull it right in.So, that's the circus: the outside world you're aware of, the thoughts in your head—your mind—and the emotions coming up from your heart.Three rings, and your consciousness is stuck dealing with all of them. Here's the thing—it gets distracted by every single one.Funny how 'distraction' turns into a spiritual word, right?Deep spirituality? It's all about handling distractions. If you weren't distracted by emotions, or thoughts, or the outside world—if you could just sit still—your consciousness could drop back to its source.THE CALM LAKE REFLECTING BACK PEACE. WHEN STIRRED UP? YOU CANNOT SEE CLEARLY.The source isn't human or a “male God” manipulating the world. It's bigger, divine, universal, and always “as is” with no empotion or preference. We could dig into that later. But here's the problem: we cannot stay there. An emotion hits—boom, consciousness gets yanked to it.Thoughts kick in—'What am I supposed to do? Do I have time for this? Why'd she say that?'—and you're distracted again.Totally pulled by thoughts, emotions, objects out there shifting and moving.Your consciousness gets drawn out, away from its center, onto distracting it.Something happens outside—it sparks a thought inside, stirs up emotions. They all line up, and next thing you know, your consciousness isn't centered anymore. It's projected out onto these objects of consciousness. So this is what the three-ring circus means. In reading Living Untethered, it then balances —the witness, the three rings: senses, thoughts, emotions. The Futility of Mental Effort* The mind cannot escape itself through its own mechanisms—it's a "built-in feature." * True freedom comes from losing interest in the mind's games, not from mastering them, akin to leaving a heavy bag at the airport rather than struggling to carry it.* The body and the self are viewed as illusory, akin to a flute that doesn't play notes but allows them to pass through. * Consciousness is the underlying reality, and the self is a mental narrative claiming ownership of experiences.* This recognition negates the idea of a separate "doer" or "seer," leading to liberation from the need to seek liberation.Your absolute absence is your absolute presence... Once you start seeing this absence, it just becomes more and more obvious when you are distracted, triggered and allowing the three-ring circus. Shatter the Illusion: Question the Norms, Trust Your Inner Wisdom, and Forge Your Soul's True Path.So freeing, right? So much love to you my friend. CBS News Congressional Correspondent Scott MacFarlane talks about President-Elect Donald Trump and President Joe Biden meeting today, Trump filling his Cabinet quickly, how qualified are the Cabinet picks, new members of Congress, the probability of pardoning the January 6th rioters, and the delay in Trump's hush money case.
Send us a textI often find myself feeling like a clown in a chaotic “3 ring circus” because of my interactions with someone who exhibits traits of Cluster B personality disorders, like narcissism and borderline personality disorder. I've noticed that these individuals frequently chase after unrealistic happiness and set unattainable expectations, which leads to a constant cycle of disappointment.Reflecting on Maria Consiglio's insights, I see that people with these disorders tend to live in a fantasy world and often engage in what's known as “monkey branching” when they seek new partners. In my relationship, I've experienced a growing emotional detachment resembling a roommate situation more than a loving partnership. This leaves me questioning whether genuine love can exist in such dynamics.I've come to realize how futile it is to seek validation from toxic individuals. It's become clear to me that I need to prioritize my self-worth and practice self-love. Ultimately, I believe I must focus on my healing and build a life centered around my own needs and values, rather than trying to please others.Support the show
Guest Bios:Shelley Paxton: Former CMO of Harley-Davidson, Shelley left her high-powered corporate career to pursue a more meaningful path, coining the term Soulbbatical. As an author, keynote speaker, and guide, Shelley helps others redefine success on their own terms, inspiring leaders to build bold, brave, and authentic lives. Shelley's signature message—“I Quit So You Don't Have To”—is the core of her keynote and forthcoming book.Chris Schembra: Founder of the 7:47 Gratitude Experience, Chris has made a career out of helping people connect more deeply through shared experiences. From hosting intimate dinners to delivering workshops and keynotes, Chris focuses on fostering vulnerability and gratitude, encouraging organizations to build a culture of empathy and inclusion. His latest book, Gratitude Through Hard Times, delves into the transformative power of appreciation.Core Topics:Liberating Yourself from “Success-Empty” to “Success-Full”: Shelley advocates for a fundamental redefinition of success that goes beyond external accolades. Through her concept of Soulbbatical, she explores how true fulfillment comes from listening to your own voice, not society's expectations. Shelley's goal is to help professionals escape the trap of “success-empty”—having material success but feeling unfulfilled—and embrace a richer, more meaningful version of success by aligning with their core values and passions.Fostering Human Connection as a Business Strategy: Chris emphasizes that human connection should be at the heart of every business strategy. By using gratitude as a tool for fostering genuine relationships, he challenges companies to build deeper bonds between employees and clients. His 7:47 Gratitude Experience—a shared meal centered around expressing thanks—demonstrates that something as simple as asking the right question can dismantle barriers, create a sense of belonging, and ultimately drive better business outcomes. The Courage to Say “No”: One of the hardest, yet most powerful strategies for growth is learning to say no. Whether it's declining opportunities that don't align with your values or setting boundaries that protect your energy, they argue that success comes not from chasing every option, but from focusing on what truly matters. For Shelley, this principle shows up in her ability to pass on engagements that don't resonate with her core message. For Chris, it's about maintaining focus on his passion for creating meaningful connections, rather than chasing every possible business avenue. The Impact of Living Your Values Daily: A key theme in both Shelley's and Chris's stories is the importance of living authentically. Guest Bio:Carla Johnson is a world-renowned keynote speaker, author of ten books, and a master of connecting the dots between creative problem-solving, strategy, and customer experience. She is best known for helping leaders and organizations cultivate innovative thinking and apply it to everyday business challenges. Carla's innovative approach earned her the title of the world's leading innovation architect, working with Fortune 500 brands, startups, and associations to rethink how they innovate and achieve breakthrough results. Her latest book, Rethink Innovation, provides a roadmap for unlocking creativity and achieving bottom-line impact.Core Topics:Defining and Conquering Your "Three-Story Limit": Carla's concept of the "Three-Story Limit" is a powerful metaphor for the boundaries we often unknowingly impose on ourselves. Just as early architects believed buildings couldn't exceed three stories, people often set limits on their potential. By identifying these hidden barriers and confronting them directly, leaders and innovators can break through constraints and reach new heights, just as William LeBaron Jenney did with the world's first skyscraper.Cultivating Curiosity as a Strategic Advantage: Curiosity, according to Carla, is the foundational skill that drives all forms of creative thinking and problem-solving. By intentionally pausing to understand a problem fully and resisting the urge to jump to quick solutions, professionals can uncover unconventional insights. Carla suggests applying curiosity in structured ways, such as reframing problems, examining them from multiple perspectives, and exploring ideas to their extreme possibilities.Exposing the Hidden Costs of the Status Quo: Carla argues that maintaining the status quo often carries a hidden cost—stagnation and loss of relevance. She challenges organizations and individuals to evaluate whether their “safest” path is actually putting them at risk of obsolescence. By constantly questioning accepted norms and pushing for bold experimentation, people can unlock new growth opportunities and avoid the trap of complacency.Applying the Concept of "Expiration Dates" to Drive Continuous Reinvention: To prevent content and strategies from becoming stale, Carla introduces the idea of assigning “expiration dates” to everything from keynotes and speaker reels to messaging and business strategies. This practice encourages regular re-evaluation, keeping ideas fresh and compelling. It's not about change for the sake of change but rather about embracing a mindset of continuous renewal to remain relevant and impactful in a rapidly evolving world.Resources:Learn more about Carla Johnson:WebsiteLinkedInInstagramXLearn more about Josh Linkner:WebsiteYouTubeLinkedInInstagramXFacebookABOUT MIC DROP:Hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. This week on Rational Security, Quinta and Scott were joined by Lawfare Senior Editor and Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Molly Reynolds to talk through some big stories at the intersection of politics and national security, including:“Over the Hill.” Congress is back in town and up to its old tricks, kicking the can of government funding down the road and still debating a funding package for Ukraine and other Biden administration priorities. As President Biden prepares to meet with congressional leaders at the White House, what are the odds of any sort of functioning legislature in this heated election year?“Rewarmed Deterrence?” After weeks of threats, the United States and its allies finally took military action against the Houthi movement that has been threatening maritime traffic through the Red Sea in purported response to the Israeli military operation in Gaza. But will this solve the problem or only invite another cycle of escalation?“The Frozen Corn Primary.” The first step of the 2024 election is officially over and the race is down to three candidates, with former President Trump having won the Iowa caucuses handily over rivals Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. What does this first race tell us about the trajectory of the 2024 race—and how it intersects with Trump's legal travails? For object lessons, Quinta recommended Paul Murray's book “The Beesting” as a pleasantly sad-funny read. Scott gave his annual PSA about why it's worth watching the divisional round of the NFL playoffs and endorsed the amazing "Art But Make it Sports" account on Twitter and Substack. And Molly told the story of Bob, the man who found the Alaska Airlines door plug in his backyard. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast. The recent disappearance of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin adds to the chaos, symbolizing a government that resembles a circus more than a serious entity.
