It has been amazing to watch Tamsen step into being a midlife mentor. She is truly leading the menopause movement we desperately need and I am here for it. We're all going to go through it. Why not empower ourselves and the next generations with more knowledge? I think that's exactly what How to Menopause will do. ❤️ Read the show notes for today's episode at terricole.com/702

I know those times, and 2025 is not one of them for me. I am in a period of significant change professionally, so I was excited to talk with Tamsen about her book. The idea of saying what people cannot unhear resonates with me because I want to get my point across strong enough that it gets buy-in and is a good use of my time. As a resident intranpreneur in corporate and entrepreneur outside of corporate, idea buy-in and making friends with change management is crucial.During my conversation with Tamsen, we chatted about:What is the ding for Tamsen? The importance of giving our audience a reason to believe. Why is story the foundation for understanding?Tamsen gives an overview of what a persuasion proverb is and how to use them. What if someone cannot hear our story or refuses to listen? Then what? Her doctoral studies at NYU. She almost gave me the academic bug! Here is more about Tamsen:Part message designer, part English-to-English translator, and now part doctoral student, Tamsen Webster helps leaders craft their case for large-scale change. A sought-after speaker and consultant, she's spent more than 25 years developing the field and practice of persuasive message design, with a particular focus on the principles and processes that build buy-in that lasts. In addition to her work in and for major organizations such as Harvard Medical School, Fidelity Investments, and Klaviyo, she built and delivers the message design curriculum for Elemental Impact, a leading investor in impact startups. She's a judge and mentor for the Harvard Innovation Labs and a professional advisor at the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship. She's also spent over 10 years as the Idea Strategist for one of only nine legacy-level TEDx events and was named to the Thinkers50 Radar in 2022. She's the author of two best-selling books, Find Your Red Thread: Make Your Big Ideas Irresistible, and Say What They Can't Unhear: The 9 Principles of Lasting Change which was named one of the top 10 management books of the year by Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper.Tamsen was a reluctant marathoner… twice; is a champion ballroom dancer (in her mind); and learned everything she knows about messages, people, and change as a Weight Watchers leader. It's Women's History Month 2025. And although we completely missed the moment LAST March (our bad), we definitely wanted to do a special episode this year honoring perhaps a lesser-known woman of history: Tamsen Donner. Join host CH as she reflects on why she feels drawn to Tamsen's story of enduring strength and resilience, as well as her appreciation of a pioneering woman who defied some of the more traditional norms of her era while also facing incredible personal tragedy not once but twice during her short life. Although Tamsen is perhaps best known for her selfless acts during the infamous Donner Party expedition, she is just one of many women in history whose unyielding spirit still resonates today, and helps to remind us of the challenges and sacrifices faced by women of the past - and the power of their perseverance that continues to inspire our present. Show Notes For those interested in learning more about Tamsen: WikiPedia: Tamsen Donner Tamsen's Letters: Tamsen Donner Letters Article: 'Tamsen Donner: Strong-willed matriarch of the Donner Party' by Mark McLaughlin || YourTahoeGuide.com Book: 'Searching for Tamsen Donner' by Gabrielle Burton Book: 'The Fateful Journey of Tamsen Donner' by Frankye Craig The author who CH asked about the viableness of the elusive diary Tamsen supposedly kept during the Donner Party expedition is Ethan Rarick, who wrote 'Desperate Passage: The Donner Party's Perilous Journey West'. The full inscription of the plaque dedicated to Tamsen and Elizabeth Donner that is currently at the Donner Memorial Picnic Site of California Highway 89 in Truckee, CA (wh), can be viewed here. Many businesses approach strategy with a broad brainstorming phase, leading to unrealistic or misaligned initiatives. How can leaders align decisions with their organization's internal philosophy to catalyze intentional change? According to message strategist Tamsen Webster, every decision follows an internal logic based on people's existing beliefs. To foster lasting change, leaders must communicate in a way that aligns with these existing perspectives. Tamsen explains how identity shapes decision-making and why brand messaging should reflect true values rather than aspirational statements. By recognizing patterns in decision-making and communicating strategically, businesses can create messages that resonate deeply with employees and customers. In this week's episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris hosts Tamsen Webster, the Founder and Chief Learning Officer at Message Design Institute, to explore the nine principles of lasting change and how to gain buy-in for organizational transformation. Tamsen shares examples of strategic messaging in renowned brands, how to balance two opposing beliefs, and how storytelling and intuitive messaging influence effective communication.

Through her groundbreaking documentary The M Factor, Fadal tackles decades of misinformation, highlights the urgent need for research, and sparks a much-needed shift in the public conversation around this critical life stage.A respected newsroom veteran, Fadal shares how her own experiences and the stories of countless women led her to pivot from high-profile reporting to menopause advocacy. By spotlighting expert voices and real-life stories, Fadal reframes menopause as a natural transition requiring understanding, not stigma.Fadal also emphasizes the importance of including men in the conversation. Whether as partners, colleagues, or policymakers, their support is key to bridging gender gaps and challenging ageist assumptions in society and the workplace.
