I realize, I was gone for like 6 months with nary a word, but I just needed a bit of time to sort of push through my own personal depression phase at all the shit that hit me last year, both COVID related and non. No, I didn't catch COVID, but I also haven't really seen almost anyone in over a year. I didn't travel back east to see family for Christmas. I haven't been at a concert in over a year. Hell, I haven't driven more than 20-30 miles in a year. The last time I was in SF proper was March of 2020. So all of that just got to me, and I needed a break for a while. It also didn't help that a bunch of people told me they hadn't really listened to the show in months because they weren't commuting any more, and I was a commute habit, so that was also a kick in the nuts. But, new year, new president, new lease on life. As way of apology, here's a giant megalithic show that should take you a while to digest. (It's over 5 hours long!) I'll probably have a show up on the Patreon in the next few days as well, and we'll see, maybe another new show here next week or the week after that, but I won't go so long again. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Setlist: "Every Generation Got Its Own Disease (acoustic)" - Fury In The Slaughterhouse "Take That Shot" - Blasted Mechanism "Soul Vaccination" - Tower Of Power "Join The Human Race" - Kingmaker "Is There A Pill?" - Richard Hawley "I'm Not Always So Stupid" - The Wedding Present "Back 2 Business" - Pop Will Eat Itself "So Alive" - Love and Rockets "If I Can't Change Your Mind" - Sugar "I Won't Back Down" - Tom Petty "Idle" - The Music "Manic Depression" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" - The Pogues "Courtesy Greetings" - Into It. I took a bit of time off, just to sort of mentally recharge my batteries. It's been a shitty month, a shitty year, and generally this year can go fucking die in a fire a thousand times over, but we gotta get through it. On the plus side, there's been some amazing new music released in the month or so (is that how long it was? Hell, I'm not even sure) since I released a new episode. Three hours spent talking about the history of funk means the last show of the month gets shortened by half an hour or so, but still, a new show for you to enjoy, including our friend Volker's 3 Miles To Essex project, and their single now available on all your other music platforms. With the passing of Little Richard last month, I decided I wanted to do a deep dive into funk. Turns out that's a pretty big topic, so this is a pretty big episode, and I wrap up in 1986, where funk starts to evolve into a bunch of other things. I've been working on and off on this episode for a while, but I eventually decided I needed to not be such a perfectionist about it and to just admit that I'm probably going to get a bunch of things wrong in it. This week's show is about the Japanese subgenre known as visual kei, which, in many ways, isn't even an actual genre, more a loose association of bands based on a visual aesthetic. Anyhow, here's three hours walking me through some of the history of visual kei, many of the players, talking about its beginnings, the waves - first, second, third, neo - and about how the genre still lives today. It's a big show, it's not for everyone, but give it a go, and maybe you'll learn something. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Setlist: "I'll Kill You" - X Japan "Precious..." I'm still here. California is still standing. We aren't at the worst of the epidemic here in the United States, but it's pretty fucking bad, no lies. I worry for those in New York the most, who are currently hit the hardest. All that said, with all this darkness comes a little bright light. Fury In The Slaughterhouse released a new song today, and all the charity is going to Doctors Without Borders. It's your moment of Fury today, but you should go out and buy the song on your own as well. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Setlist: "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" - Chicago "A New England" - Billy Bragg "Bliss" - The Chain Gang of 1974 "Got To Give It Up" - Marvin Gaye "WeMoveForward" - The Midnight "Driving Nowhere" - Grassy Knoll "The Way I Am" - 3 Miles To Essex "Misery" - Beyond The Black "Rich Cop, Poor Cop" - Lotion "Even If It Kills Me" - Motion City Soundtrack "Never Is A Promise" - Fiona Apple "Debris" - The Faces "Directing Traffik" - Inspiral Carpets "Send Her To Heaven" - The All-American Rejects "Funky Stuff" - Kool & The Gang "The Sky Is A Neighborhood" - Foo Fighters "Paranoia Key Of E" - Lou Reed "My Name Is The Night (Color Me Black)" - Brian Fallon "Forgotten Years" - Midnight Oil "Love Is Ending" - The Charlatans "Tequila" - Terrorvision "Lean On Me" - Bill Withers "Hello In There" - John Prine "Radiation Vibe" - Fountains Of Wayne "Stacy's Mom" - Fountains Of Wayne "Mexican Wine" - Fountains Of Wayne your moment of (NEW!) So I don't want to talk too much about the epidemic crossing the globe, but I will say we're still under shelter-in-place here in California, and that the US is now leading in cases of the virus. So on Sunday, the Bay Area (in which I live) issued a "shelter-in-place" mandate, meaning if you don't have to go out, DON'T. On Thursday, that order was expanded to the entire state of California. Because of that, maybe I'm going a little stir crazy. It's weird to see pictures of the Bay with no traffic anywhere, and to skip things that have been staples in my life, like pub trivia night or boardgame night. I've been doing what I can to stay in contact with friends/family via Facetime, Facebook Videochat and the like, but it's still a very weird disconnect. I deal with trauma with gallows humor, so I made this, show zero, full of apocalypse songs. Soon, I'll do another one, full of more upbeat stuff. But I thought I'd give everyone an update from the frontlines, so I maybe talk more this episode than normal. A slice of life of what right now is like, to be preserved for posterity. We're all living through history. Maybe a little extra talking time is warranted right now. Still, it's my show and while I'm happy to have you along for the ride, Imma do me. Enjoy. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Setlist: "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" - R.E.M. So this isn't a typical episode. The entire back half of the episode is dedicated to a Midwestern band that I've often felt deserves to be a bunch bigger. That band is The Samples. They're also on tour for much of this year, all over the whole country, even out here in California, so I'm going to see them live! Again! For the first time in 20+ years! I hadn't really anticipated doing a scene show this month, but it turns out we lost one of the greatest drummers of all time, Neil Peart of Rush, a little over a week ago. If you aren't familiar with the powerhouse that was Neil Peart, I spend over 3 hours giving you a tour-de-force of the tour-de-force they called The Professor. In addition to being Rush's drummer, he was also their lyricist, writing so many incredible songs filled with sci-fi and fantasy imagery. For 40 years, Neil Peart delighted and amazed audiences. If you aren't familiar with the band I describe as "the third most proggy band ever," or even if you're a die hard Rush fan slappin' da bass, hopefully you'll enjoy this overview of their career, and know how much we all miss Neil Peart. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Setlist (all songs by Rush): "Fly By Night" "Anthem" "Bastille Day" "A Passage To Bangkok" "Xanadu" "Closer To The Heart" "La Villa Strangiato" "The Spirit Of Radio" "Tom Sawyer" "Limelight" "YYZ (Live)" "New World Man" "Subdivisions" "Red Sector A" "Manhattan Project" "Force Ten" "Presto" "Hand Over Fist" "Roll The Bones" "The Big Wheel" "Nobody's Hero" "Stick It Out" "Test For Echo" "Limbo" "Ghost Rider" "Secret Touch" "Armor & Sword" "Workin' Them Angels" "Far Cry (live)" "Caravan" "Clockwork Angels"
It's 2020. We made it into a new decade. Let's all hope it won't be our last. Anyway, this should rattle a few brains. It's an all over the map show with lots of variety to make you go "Whaaaaa?" Didn't see as many concerts this year as I normally do. There was sort of a dry spell for a while in terms of shows, although to be fair, there were also a handful of shows I wanted to go see and just couldn't, because they were a) sold out, b) bought out by scalpers, c) happening when I was sick, d) happening when other shows I wanted to see were happening and/or e) thousands of miles away. But I did see a ton of great musicians and comedians this year. So let's delve into that! (Also, be warned, my voice is pretty scratchy this episode. Traveler's plague. Bleh.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Setlist: "Everything Must Go" - Kongos "Teenage Dirtbag" - Wheatus "Janine" - Soul Coughing "Teenage Rockstars" - Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness "Look Away" - Rival Sons "Pressure And Time" - Rival Sons "Far Cry" - Ryan Hamilton And The Harlequin Ghosts "City Girls" - Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers "Uncomfortably Numb (ft. First and foremost, I want to send positive energy towards my friend Thorsten Wingenfelder, who is currently laid up in the hospital, and having to reschedule his solo shows that were scheduled for this month. Hopefully it's nothing too major and he'll be back on his feet again soon, but I wanted to kick off this episode with a big block of his stuff (and stuff he's done with his brother), so he knows I'm wishing him a speedy recovery. Secondly, the scene show I did two weeks ago on Creation Records was probably one of the biggest undertakings I've ever done for the show, and I had way too much stuff to fit in, even with the three hours time. So consider a good part of this show excess stuff from that episode. The first part of it is about American bands that Creation helped put out albums, including one of my favorites, Bob Mould's band Sugar. The second, larger, part is sort of a tangent inspired by that scene show. When I was doing my homework, I was boggled by how much the band Oasis went through membership changes, and how many other bands they sort of stole from to fill in their missing members. So I charted that whole history in a block that takes up a bit more than half of this episode. If you're one of those people who skips through me talking, there's a big block of it (which I warn you of) but for those of you who love weird obscure musical stories, this one's a doozy. Back to a normal show format next week! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Setlist: "Song of Love And Hope" - Driftland "Die Unperfekten" - Thorsten Wingenfelder "Besser Zu Zweit" - Wingenfelder:Wingenfelder "Klassenfahrt" - Wingenfelder "Brüder" - Wingenfelder "Königin Der Nacht" - Wingenfelder "SendeschlussTestbild" - Wingenfelder "If I Can't Change Your Mind" - Sugar "5ive" - Medicine "Naked Girl Falling Down The Stairs" - The Cramps "Two Worlds Collide" - Inspiral Carpets "Rock'n'Roll Star" - Oasis "Let Your Hair Down" - Starclub "Go Let It Out!" - Oasis "Chinese Burn" - Heavy Stereo "Black Nite Crash" - Ride "Let Go Of The Dream" - Hurricane #1 "Tattva" - Kula Shaker "Falling Down" - Oasis "Ready Or Not" - The Lightning Seeds "The Roller" - Beady Eye "The Death Of You And Me" - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds "Wall Of Glass" - Liam Gallagher "All I Want" - Ride "It's A Beautiful World" - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds "Rattling Rose" - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds your moment of Fury "Then She Said (live/acoustic)" - Fury In The Slaughterhouse GET WELL SOON THORSTEN!
