Today's guest really brings me back. Welcome central Jersey's finest, Kevin Shields of Detention and Bigger Thomas. Kevin was a founding member of the central New Jersey punk scene that birthed bands like Bouncing Souls and Vision. He talks about what the scene was like, how it developed, and how it changed. He also talks about life before punk. He was in the Coast Guard and traveled all over; which is how he discovered punk rock in San Francisco in 1979. After an honorable discharge, he moved back to Jersey, picked up a bass, and formed Detention. Their first gig was an eviction party that was shut down by the cops. Their second gig resulted in a ban. Despite, or maybe because of, that, they were championed by none other than Matt Pinfield. Detention was, and really still is, a DIY affair in the truest punk sense. They were working class and wanted to have some fun. Now Left For Dead Records is releasing a compilation of some of Detention's material and it really is a time capsule. Check out Dead Rock ‘n Rollers on Left For Dead Records. Interview with Kevin Shields Of Detention. Detention was one of the first and best bands of the ‘80s New Jersey hardcore punk explosion. Their wonderfully tasteless “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” single became the college radio cult classic of 1983. The song's 97 seconds of primal Ramones-style speed-punk mocked the demise of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious, John Belushi, and John Bonham — who “played the drug game and couldn't maintain.” They even foretold the drug-related heart attack of Jim Carroll, famous for “All The People Who Died,” screaming, “What are you waiting for? Do it!” Saving the best for last, “Dead Rock 'n Rollers” raised the obvious question: “Why couldn't it be Barry Manilow?” The Detention story goes back to Central Jersey, to the Shields family home in Hillsborough Township, about 20 minutes from the “culture capital” of New Brunswick. Kevin Shields, the fourth of five sons, grew up listening to his older brothers' sophisticated record collection of hippie music that ranged from Blue Cheer to King Crimson. Kevin recalls: “Early on, I knew that rock ‘n roll was something special. I was fascinated.” “I enlisted in the Coast Guard when I was 17. I was out on my own. I was always a music guy and realized music was getting stale with Genesis and whatnot. I read all the magazines, and the ads in the back, so I sent money to these labels, and came home with albums like Never Mind the Bollocks and Rocket to Russia, and singles by the Slickee Boys and MX-80 Sound. But the coup d'grace was when we stationed in Alameda and I went wild in San Francisco. I went to the Mabuhay Gardens like three nights a week, seeing all the legendary West Coast bands: DKs, DOA, Black Flag. I got thrashed on the education of seeing live bands.” When Kevin returned home in 1981, he was inspired to make music. “Detention came about because I decided to be a player not a spectator,” he explains. “The easiest way was to recruit my family, so I turned to my brothers. I bought a bass, but I didn't know how to play it. My brother Paul suggested I get in touch with this guitarist Rodney Matejek. He showed me how to play simply, and within months we started coming up with riffs, and what would become songs came very quickly.” The band — Kevin, Rodney, frontman Paul Shields, and drummer Daniel Shields — played their first show at Raritan Manor on the Somerville Circle, hosted by a young Matt Pinfield in his first radio DJ gig at WRSU (Rutgers). It was a noisy and chaotic affair, with people rolling on the floor — until police arrived and stopped the mayhem. “We were given 100 bucks, and we promised never to play there again,” Kevin says with a grin. Kevin offers some backstory: “Rob Roth, god bless his pointed head, he had a vision. He got us into the studio in Roselle Park, and he paid for it. All we had to do was get good recordings of the two songs, including the B-side “El Salvador.” It came out great. My brother Paul certainly had the lungs for the job! Those 500 copies got us gigs and got us a lot of notice.” In 1985, Detention released a self-produced self-titled album before disbanding. This week we're discussing every album (and EP) by My Bloody Valentine. MBV is one of the most influential rock bands of all-time and helped pioneer shoegaze, with singer/guitarist Kevin Shields's surreal and unreasonably noisy guitar tone. This band is for anyone who wants the prettiest music ever to also make their ears bleed. Before discovering punk rock and forming New Jersey hardcore band Detention with his brothers Daniel and Paul, bassist Kevin Shields was a rock and roll kid. He bought the Johnny Winter And 'Live' album because he thought the cover looked cool, and no matter where his musical path took him this blistering live set recorded live at The Fillmore East in 1970 remained near-and-dear to his heart. Rock. And. Roll. Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine is one of the loudest guitarists around. And he puts his volume to work creating mythical tones that have captured so many of our imaginations, including our special shoegaze correspondent, guitarist and pedal-maestro Andy Pitcher, who is our guest today. My Bloody Valentine has a short discography made up of just a few albums and EPs that span decades. Meticulous as he seems to be, Shields creates texture out of his layers of tracks and loops and fuzz throughout, creating a music that needs to be felt as much as it needs to be heard. We go to the ultimate source as Billy Corgan leaves us a message about how it felt to hear those sounds in the pre-internet days, when rather than pull up a YouTube clip, your imagination would have to guide you toward a tone. But not everyone is an MBV fan, so this conversation is part superfan hype and part debate. We can all agree Kevin Shields is a guitarists you should know, but we can't all agree what to do with that information. This episode is supported by http://fender.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. My Bloody Valentine were a great band from the start, but the 1990 Glider EP broke their floodgates open, as Kevin Shields turned the band's mix of thick guitars, heavy bass, pounding drums, and heavenly vocals into a soundworld of its own. After a little bit of a summer hiatus, Marc Masters (author of High Bias: The Distorted History of the Cassette Tape) and John Howard (Nice Breeze, Many Spaceships Studio) submerge themselves in the 7-inch version, "Soon" b/w "Glider," on the latest episode of The Spindle.Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. There's something romantic about glorious failure and Will nails it perfectly in ‘Street Level Superstar: A Year With Lawrence'. Over 40 years plagued by bad luck and self-sabotage with Felt, Denim and Mozart Estate, Lawrence has pursued fame and success while refusing to do what's required to achieve them. Will spent 12 months wandering the streets of London with him to paint a fond, touching and extremely entertaining portrait of the worst-equipped pop star attempting a comeback, a man on a holy, monastic mission in a book about “sacrifice and the price of a dream”. Among many highlights here, we talk about … … where Lawrence fits in the pantheon of great underachievers like Syd Barrett, Nick Drake and Arthur Lee. … and his similarity to Kevin Shields and Kevin Rowland. … the wisdom of a former girlfriend: “stop trying to be the pop star you don't want to be and you might get somewhere”. … is lack of success the central dream of the indie world? … why Denim were Britpop before Britpop happened and why EMI melted down all copies of their last single. … his rules before the book began - “No anecdotes, no interviews with former members of Felt …” … what his stalker planned to get his attention. … fantasy girlfriends and “a fear of cheese”. … why he didn't go to his mother's funeral. … and why Truman Capote's portrait of Marlon Brando, the Duke and His Domain, was a touchstone for this book.

Formed in a city best known for either Motown Soul or Garage Rock, shoegazers Majesty Crush were an anomaly in the early ‘90s Detroit music scene. Inspired by the music coming out of the UK, Majesty Crush's sound employed swirling guitars, hazy vocals, and captivating dreaminess while incorporating elements of soul and R&B. After their song “No. 1 Fan” received significant airplay during prime hours on the Windsor radio station 89X, Majesty Crush - David Stroughter (vocals), Mike Segal (guitars), Hobey Echlin (bass) and Odell Nails (drums) - signed with Dali Records, a subsidiary of Warner/Elektra and released their debut full-length, Love 15, in 1993. However, just a month after the album came out, Dali Records folded bringing Majesty Crush's momentum to a halt and, ultimately, to an end just a few years later. Though their time was short, the band amassed a small but loyal following in the shoegaze scene of the early ‘90s and have been cited as an influence for everything from indie guitar groups to metal bands. And curators of this style of music have sought out Majesty Crush's music to include on compilations like Third Man Records' Southeast of Saturn which features 19 tracks from Detroit shoegaze and dream pop artists. In March 2024, Numero Group released Butterflies Don't Go Away, a 2 LP set featuring the Love 15 album as well as singles, EPs, and rarities, all remastered from the original tapes. Toronto-London based experimental group, The Flowers of Hell, founded by Greg Jarvis release their latest album called "Keshakhtaran" via Space Age Recordings. "The Flowers of Hell" is rooted in an old blues idea about how music transforms the misery and toil of musicians into the joy of listeners, as well as Baudelaire's poetry book called, "Les Fleurs Du Mal." "Keshakhtaran," meaning "seeking nirvana through meditation to sound, especially when you're stoned," is suitably named. The album presents a 42-minute instrumental psilocybin meditation piece in two parts, rooted in sax, flugel horn, chimes, harp, sitar and opera soprano vocals, augmented with tremolos, flutters, horns, woodwinds, strings and percussion. The album was mastered by Grammy recipient Peter J. Moore (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Joe Strummer). For the past 18 years, The Flowers Of Hell have traversed the experimental edges of indie, classical and jazz, with music often rooted in the audio-visual synesthesia of Jarvis. Despite relative obscurity, they have been championed by music legends such as Lou Reed, Sonic Boom, Kevin Shields and members of The Legendary Pink Dots, Death In Vegas, The Wedding Present, The Fugs and The Plastic People Of The Universe, not to mention support from NASA's Mission Control team and the Tate Gallery. THE FLOWERS OF HELL also released their deluxe first vinyl pressing of Lou Reed-endorsed "Odes" album for Record Store Day UK. "Odes," pays tribute to The Joy Division, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Stereolab, Laurie Anderson, The Velvet Underground, Siouxsie & the Banshees and Neutral Milk Hotel, among others. http://www.flowersofhell.comhttps://flowersofhell.bandcamp.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturnaListen : http://modsnapradio.comQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on ModSnap RadioKMOD: San Antonio2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)
Toronto-London based experimental group The Flowers Of Hell have announced that they will release their new album 'Keshakhtaran' via UK cult label Space Age Recordings (home to Spacemen 3, as well as Spectrum, Chapterhouse, Acid Mothers Temple and The Telescopes). Ahead of this, they present ‘Foray Through Keshakhtaran', the first taste of the trans-Atlantic group's first studio album in six years. A tripped out instrumental journey in two 20-minute parts, this record involves 20 artists, including special guests Rishi Dhir (Elephant Stone, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels, Beck) on sitar, Montreal harpist Sarah Pagé, and avant-accordion legend Angel Corpus Christi (Suicide, Spiritualized, Dean Wareham). Produced by the band's leader and composer Greg Jarvis, this album was mastered by Grammy recipient Peter J. Moore (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Joe Strummer). For the past 18 years, The Flowers Of Hell have traversed the experimental edges of indie, Classical and jazz, with music often rooted in the audio-visual synesthesia of the group's mastermind, Greg Jarvis. Despite relative obscurity, they have been championed by music legends such as Lou Reed, Sonic Boom, Kevin Shields and members of The Legendary Pink Dots, Death In Vegas, The Wedding Present, The Fugs and The Plastic People Of The Universe, not to mention support from NASA's mission control team and the Tate Gallery with an album installation and concert just a fortnight before London locked down. #NewMusic #Legends #Interview

This week your rock n' roll vampires suck on the neck of a long-forgotten genre that emerged in the late 80s – early 90s. A genre that exploited obscured vocals, guitar distortion, effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume: SHOEGAZE. Primarily based in the UK, these bands used the artistry of guitar innovation to paint some wonderfully layered sonic canvases! If you have a preconceived notion that you don't like this stuff, we ask that you give this episode a shot as you might be surprised how much it rocks…What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we focus on the FORGOTTEN. If you were into this music when it came out back in the early 90s, chances are that you haven't revisited it in a while. Come along on this ride with us and spend the next 90-min staring at your feet! We hope we re-introduce some of you to these bands and turn others on to something completely new!Songs this week include:Swervedriver – “Blowin' Cool” from Mezcal Head (1993)Ride – “Here And Now” from Nowhere (1990)Drop Nineteens – “Limp” from National Coma (1993)Catherine Wheel – “Kill Rhythm” from Chrome (1993)Lift To Experience – “These Are The Days” from The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads (2001)Kitchens Of Distinction – “Sand On Fire” from Capsule: The Best Of Kitchens Of Distinction 1988-1994 (1994)My Bloody Valentine – “Only Shallow” from Loveless (1991)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/

"Heart Shaped Scars" The Scottish born Dot Allison made her initial splash in music fronting the indie dance band One Dove. They only put out one record—-1993's Morning Dove White—but if you were a band that was only going to put one record out, Morning Dove White would be the perfect choice. A dizzying blend of hypnotic electronica and pulsing melodic pop, Morning Dove White is an undeniable classic. From there, Allison launched her solo career, putting out the wondrous album Afterglow in 1999. Since then, she's put out several solo efforts, including We Are Science, Exaltation of Larks and her brand new one, which is also her first in 12 years, Heart Shaped Scars. Along the way she's collaborated with everyone from Paul Weller to Pete Doherty to Scott Walker to Kevin Shields. A sonorous collection of hypnotic indie folk that's punctuated by dreamy and dedicated melodies, Heart Shaped Scars is one of the most stirring and quietly riveting collections of the year. Filled with lyrics that are informed by botany, philosophy, and the organic behavior of the natural world, its an album that's intricate, and personal, yet also decidedly universal. Perhaps Allison's botanist father planted the seeds for her interest in the behaviors of the natural world and perhaps her musician mother inspired her to pursue music. Those wouldn't be illogical conclusions. But that only scratches the surface of the area Alison is exploring on this record. A Whitmanic approach to the natural world has found her digging in to what makes things connect both consciously and unconsciously. When Whitman writes "For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you," that's what she's after. Connection. Awareness. The living intelligence of the natural world that provides patterns and templates that stretch from the past to the un-lived future. This conversation is pure joy and it addresses connectivity, collaboration and....leaf blowers.... www.dotallison.com https://sarecordings.com/artist/166560-dot-allison www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast on Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Saturday 24 April: Gretchen Parlato's new album Flor takes us from Bach to Bowie to bossa nova, and Irish guitarist Kevin Shields on how 'shoegazing' fits between grunge and Britpop.
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/musicacronica/message
GOOD Friday, great episode. Yes, we’ve finally done it, and it only took a crucifixion to convince us. To honour this episode’s release day, we’re focusing our Top 5 on the show’s patron saint, Kanye West (sorry Frank). But before that main event, we tackle big news from the My Bloody Valentine camp, somehow round-up all the latest non-fungible controversy and discuss the somewhat miraculous return of The Antlers. Easter might be a moveable feast but NO ENCORE is your weekly music mainstay. So tuck in…ACT ONE: Craig and Dave brace themselves for what may well be a divisive episode. So… what’s new?ACT TWO (5:35): Yes, we’ve bought more vinyl. And yes, it’s actually newsworthy. The big question is whether Kevin Shields is really going to grace us with two new My Bloody Valentine albums anytime soon… Other pressing questions this news section: are you interested in a 20 quid Glastonbury show, would you let Matt Willis prick you and are non-fungible tokens “the most disgusting things on the planet right now”? Lindsay Lohan has an answer for at least one of these.ACT THREE (23:41): Peter Silberman has battled stark hearing problems to deliver The Antlers’ sixth studio album, an unflappable record that finds him opting for zen-like serenity. The lads openly wept when they last saw The Antlers live. How will they react during this album review?ACT FOUR (39:00): Our Top 5 Kanye West Songs. Have your NO ENCORE bingo cards at the ready. Naturally featuring Craig reading from a 16 year-old issue of Q Magazine.Q might be a thing of the past but if you fancy helping this musical outlet survive and indeed thrive, you can head on over to patreon.com/noencore. We greatly appreciate it!
A mix of all Brian Eno collabs including David Bowie, Kevin Shields, Daniel Lanois, Laurie Anderson, Michael Brook, Suede, Cluster, and others.
We are honoured to announce our in conversation with Charlotte Courbe. In celebration of @levolumecourbe fabulous EP Fourteen Years which dropped today, we have a very special exclusive interview and part EP playback. With a major label budget backing them, Doug Martsch and his rotating cast of Built To Spill members made something special with 1997's Perfect From Now On. While his previous indie releases, along with Martsch's original band Treepeople, pointed to a capable songwriter and inventive guitar player, Perfect From Now On raised the bar for nearly every guitarist who studied J Mascis' frenetic shredding, Neil Young's extended jams, or Kevin Shields layered shoegaze. Thanks to the time on their side, layers of guitar intertwine throughout, switching between clean picking and fuzzed leads, backed by an array of studio indulgences that include a cello, mellotron, organ, and more. The result is lush and dreamy without losing its bite, and a timeless record that influenced a generation of artists that none have equaled. Antitesis.
Ever go to Japan and been so bored that you have to hang out and fall in love with an international celebrity? Yeah us too. That's why we picked the Lost in Translation soundtrack for this episode. We kinda trash Bill Murray, so sorry to all the diehard Murray heads out there. We also didn't realize this album was 90% Kevin Shields but despite that it turned into a better episode than usual. Nick put together a particularly difficult edition of Covers Blown and blew our minds. STAY TUNED FOR THE HIDDEN TRACK, LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE!

A few episodes of "Music Raygun" have had musical instruments as their themes, namely saxophone, bass and piano. Well, there are only a few instruments left to cover as long as we're talking about your basic rock band, so here's one about the bedrock of the genre: the guitar. We're talking about Link Wray, George Benson, J. Mascis, Wendy Melvoin, Kevin Shields, Robert Quine and plenty more. To see the videos featured in this episode, visit musicraygun.com/playlists.

Brian Reitzell is best known for his contributions to films by Sofia Coppola, including 'The Virgin Suicides,' 'Lost in Translation' and 'Marie Antoinette,' but he’s also composed scores for the football drama 'Friday Night Lights' and the TV series 'Hannibal.' In his 2015 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, Reitzell spoke about the trials and tribulations of licensing music for film and his collaborations with artists like Air, Kevin Shields, Aphex Twin and more.
First of all, this isn't a band. It's Billy Corgan going into a studio and recording 100 guitar tracks per song, then whispering half his vocals before eating a bunch of broken glass and recording the other half. You're not Kevin Shields, man. Chill. Next, this episode contains a shocking revelation about the music of Smashing Pumpkins. It's honestly so important that it could end up in the viral news cycle. But until Buzzfeed rips off our insights, you'll just have to listen to the episode to hear it. The Smashing Pumpkins suck.
Jason and Matt get into the touchstone of shoegaze, My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless". Jason can't get over this is from 1991 and just Kevin fucking Shields. Matt is hearing this for the first time.
This is a complex and fascinating conversation with Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine about the latest version of the band's legendary 1991 album Loveless. It's also about the group's future. If you have the vinyl version of Loveless you probably think you it's an analog recording. Well the technical truth is, you don't. It's a bit confusing, but for one, the nice segues on Loveless — those seamless song-to-song transitions — were done on a computer. And before a pressing plant makes the vinyl version, it turns the analog tapes into a digital file.So Kevin Shields went on what he thought would be a brief mission to make an all-analog version of Loveless. It ended up taking years and an awful lot of money. But now the new vinyl version is out and the tale of the tape is what much of this conversation is about. We get in the weeds about tech, about mastering an album (which is the technical final tweaking done before a record is pressed). But stick with it. It was an eye-and-ear-opening conversation.

Line Noise is a podcast about electronic music from Philip Sherburne and Ben Cardew. Episode four comes to you live from the first Barcelona independent label market, as we examine some of our favourite Barcelona labels, including interviews with Hivern’s John Talabot, Pau Roca from Black Money Records, bRUNA from Lapsus, Pedro Vian from Modern Obscure Music and Luca Lozano from Berlin’s Klasse Recordings. We also discuss new releases from Hessle Audio’s Ploy, Dean Blunt (as Babyfather), Ex-Terrestrial and Mark Pritchard, plus you can find out why Kevin Shields is “the shoegaze Pitbull”.
My Bloody Valentine’s seminal, revered work “Loveless” is lots of things: a swirling miasma of sonic assault, the birth of the legend of Kevin Shields’ madness (which saw the record make its way through nineteen studios and damn near bankrupt its label), and a layered, and above all, loud approach to song-making. So I guess what it is more than anything is a good story, and we love those. Shane’s sitting this one out with some sort of sickness, which is I guess what happens when your eardrums have been bled clean out and you have to lie down, lest you lose your proverbial shit. In his stead this week is our friend Phil Ajjarapu, who shares a story about eating cheese and crackers with BB King, about the difference between the way we soak things up in our youth (as opposed to when we’ve been worn down over time) and about the influence of this record that seems, in some ways, to be more than the sum of its parts. Ryan rebounds from last week’s love-in with Yo La Tengo, just in time to wonder if he “gets” this LP, even though Shields’ seems to have recorded with at least one of his heroes, and perhaps more. We even wonder about the phenomenally bad idea of Trey Anastasio’s Phish covering this record in its entirety for Halloween (which, fortunately, didn’t happen), and press on about what makes a song work, and what it must be like to have to try to decipher and catalog lyrics you think you may have heard in a live recording session, and then transcribe so that whatever version of “tortured genius” (if you buy the platitudes) might live on. That, and we talk about Skee-Lo, self effacing diminutive rap staple. Somewhere along the way, Phil’s dog Molly eats a pencil in my garage. Purchase "Loveless" on Amazon
Brian Reitzell, drummer (Redd Kross/Air) and soundtrack multi-talent (Marie Antoinette, 30 Days of Night, TV’s Hannibal) has recently moved into the wild world of video game music, while continuing to guide the soundtracks of major films by directors like Sofia Coppola and collaborating with adventurous rockers like Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine and Beck main man Roger Joseph Manning Jr. Brian....
