Today I am joined by Jodie, Zoe and Fin of the Melancholic Rock band, Mirrors, from Cork!Mirrors blend raw energy with Irish anxieties through bold, compelling music. Drawing inspiration from The Cranberries, Mazzy Star and Just Mustard, their sound fuses Celtic rock and melancholic, shoegaze-laced textures. For this episode, I will be chatting with the band about the two things mainly, with the first being the fantastic achievement that is the band being longlisted as part of the emerging talent competition to play Glastonbury this year.Secondly, and the primary focus of the episode, is the band's brilliant brand new single 'Drowning', which was released today and was recorded with Wayfield records. The single also has an accompanying music video that was also released today and was directed and edited by Katelyn Leahy.Mirrors on LinktreeCover photo was by phototree.ieDrowning official music videoSkinner + Joe Maxi + Digdeep live at Sin EHorrenda + Their Last Stop live at Sin E Hosted on Acast. LA Witch... great tunes, inspired another award approaching show by us... we played some songs by this LA 'garage' band that made a name for themselves in the clubs and have quite the dedicated following. Once we got started it spun off into a "hey, this other band has a similar sound... dontcha think?"... and it went off into the silly fun chatty stuff we do so well ... like 2 sugared up kids at the park. Other bands we played tonight: Yannis & the Yaw, Nirvana, Mazzy Star, the Misfits, Surfin Dead Boys, Messer Chups, Death Valley Girls, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Warm Drag and the Cramps... and likely others. Some new friends and old friends chime in to this Award Winning Show (hey, "participation ribbon" is an award) presented by idiots (me & Eric) and enjoyed by thousands. We had a bundle of fun - hope you do to listening to two buddies mince words and play tunes. You can be part of our Super Secret Schitty Committee - next time we are on - call in and say "Pour Me Another Brother" for fun and prizes. This underwear isn't getting any newer. (that's an inside joke? "yeah, in your PANTS") - what are we ... eight?

Down With Boring – Dork's sonic sanctuary of chaos and contemplation – returns with enough musical muscle to power a small indie disco (or at least your Monday evening existential crisis). Sunday (1994) are our special guests – a band who've mastered the art of making any emotion sound impossibly beautiful. Their debut EP sits somewhere between a Mazzy Star dream sequence and that film you caught at 3am that changed your life – all hazy romance and perfectly framed heartbreak, turning cinematic aspirations into songs that feel like memories you never knew you had. Meanwhile, we're dissecting Amyl & The Sniffers' ‘Cartoon Darkness' like enthusiastic punk rock pathologists. Amy Taylor and co. have packed more raw energy into the record than a case of banned energy drinks, tackling everything from ecological doom to rebellion that snaps back harder than yesterday's bubblegum. Plus, there's all the usual new music. Tyler, The Creator brings the weird and wonderful (and a word we're becoming a little too fond of repeating), Lady Gaga reminds us why she's pop's most committed method actor, and a who's who of indie's finest – Declan McKenna, Overpass, Hotwax, and Do Nothing – all check in with fresh material.
Elizabeth Bruce in conversation with David Eastaugh http://www.evergreendazed.com/ https://evergreendazed.bandcamp.com/ Evergreen Dazed were formed in Leicester, England, in 1991, when Elizabeth Bruce, a US student on a year long exchange, answered a 'vocalist wanted' advert by Mark Turrell. They found an instant chemistry between his dreamy pop tunes and her smoky, jazz-tinged vocals, which can be heard on their first album, 'Cloudbeams In Your Eye' (CBBMLP3). This was recorded at home and released in Nov 1992. It features acoustic pop in the style of The Sundays or Mazzy Star, electronic ambient pieces, and echo-laden space rock. They played a couple of gigs in San Francisco, supporting an embryonic Richard Buckner, and bay area folk rocker Sonya Hunter. They also secured a feature article in UK psych magazine Ptolemaic Terrascope, and an entry in Chris William's book of underground bands 'Adrift In The Ether'. The book drew the attention of Spanish indie-pop label Elefant, who wanted to release some of their music. This resulted in a 7" 3 track EP 'Ocean Beach', released in 1994, and appearances on a couple of label compilations, as well as a Felt tribute CD.

From the poignant narratives of Eddie Vedder's personal history to the band's courageous battle against industry giants, we uncover the raw emotion and rebellious spirit that catapulted tunes like "Jeremy" and "Black" from cult favorites to anthems that defined a generation. Together, we'll navigate the band's origins, their watershed moments, and the cultural legacy that still echoes in the chords of their music.Strap in for a whirlwind journey back to the heyday of the 90s, where the music scene was as eclectic as it was electric. You're promised a year-long celebration, revisiting the era that brought us the angst-filled anthems of Everclear, the haunting ballads of Mazzy Star, and the evocative storytelling of The Wallflowers. Through these tales and tunes, we'll explore the diverse voices that shaped an unforgettable decade, and how those reverberations continue to influence today's artists.Join me as I share personal reflections, studio anecdotes, and the occasional beer-fueled banter, all while dissecting the intricate layers of Pearl Jam's "Ten." Whether it's the "Mamasan" trilogy that struck a chord or the political undertones that stirred the soul, each track is more than just a song—it's a piece of the puzzle that is our collective memory. So tune in, turn it up to eleven, and let's revisit the raw storytelling that still speaks volumes today.Support the show

Interview with Catbells on their full-length debut Partly Cloudy. All the meticulously crafted material on Partly Cloudy was composed by Catbells, and features her soft, hypnotic vocals, dreamy melodies and, haunting lyrics. These are blended with electronic elements and other instrumental seasoning provided by Billy Mohler to produce a sonic landscape that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. With influences ranging from 60's icons like Nico and Donovan to seminal 90's Dream-pop artists ala Mazzy Star, Catbells has created a vein of Lofi " sad girl" bedroom-pop all her own melodies that captures her deep, heartfelt emotions with the deepest intimacy. With each track, she invites her audience on a journey through her innermost thoughts and experiences. Catbells burst onto the indie music scene in 2021with her debut single “Fade (Rainy Day Demo)” which has racked up 1.3 million views to date. She followed that release with an EP titled Wilderness that testified to her blossoming skill as a songwriter and the emotional potency of her performing and garnered a dedicated fanbase who found connection and solace in the midst of their own struggles and triumphs. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist began playing piano at age five, and by 7 th grade was playing guitar and writing songs about middle school heartbreaks. After performing in several bands she decided to focus on her own music. The name “Catbells” comes from a popular hiking spot described in The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle by Beatrix Potter. Raised in New England, Catbells' music continues to draw on childhood memories of the natural world: seasons changing, swimming in the Eastern lakes, canoeing and working on the family farm. As her journey unfolds, Catbells continues to intrigue and captivate. With her soul-stirring compositions, and a voice that echoes through the depths of the heart, Catbells is an artist who embraces the beauty of the unknown. An episode from 11/13/23: Tonight, I talk about our attachment to music as teenagers and adults, and the lessons that loving music—and finding meaning in musicians' life stories—can teach us. First, I read two passages from Patti Smith's memoir, Just Kids. Those parts on her early life with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, before either of them were well-known, are incredibly moving. Next, I talk about my attachment to the band Mazzy Star, and then read from a listener's email about seeing the band Living Colour perform live for the first time, after years of listening to their music. Finally, I read a few passages from Words Without Music, a memoir by the composer Philip Glass. If you have a story of your own to share about art, creativity, religion or myth, email me about it and it could appear in an upcoming episode. After teaching herself to play guitar and piano, Mariangela began composing songs that allowed express her experiences and connect deeply with her audience, while representing the complexity of her life as a multicultural artist. Born in the Mexican city of Monterrey and raised in Texas, she grew up surrounded by both iconic and trending songs from both sides of the border. She is inspired by the works of Natalia Lafourcade, Stevie Nicks, Mazzy Star, Natalia Jiménez, Pink Floyd and Pearl Jam, as well as the folklore of Veracruz, her father's homeland. She found masters for her lyrics in Latin American poets Jaime Sabines (Mexico) and Mario Benedetti (Uruguay), also in Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. Mariangela's music is born on her guitar or piano, instruments she learned to play by herself, and become in vehicles to share her experiences in songs that capture the essence of human emotions. Her lyrics and sounds transcend and have the plasticity that allow her public to make them their own. It's always a good feeling when artists you haven't heard from in a while come back with some of their strongest work. California's Rain Parade were one of the key bands of the Paisley Underground, the name given to indie bands like the Bangles and the Dream Syndicate who were focusing on melody and steeped in Big Star and the Byrds. Their '83 debut is still a masterwork of any genre. After switching to a major label, the usual challenges ensued and the band ceased, though the members all went on to other projects. This summer sees the release of the first Rain Parade album in 38 years, Last Rays of a Dying Sun, and it might be their strongest yet. Matt and Steven join us to discuss what motivated the new album, their collaboration process, the passing of Steven's brother and original member David Roback who went on to form Mazzy Star, and much more. It'll be hard to knock this album off my best of the year list. Enjoy! www.patreon.com/thehustlepod www.flatironrecordings.com
