Hey everyone...in honor of our upcoming 100th episode (!!!), I'll be re-releasing a few of my favorite past conversations on Tuesdays. This one was a lifelong dream for me: getting to talk to DEVO's Gerald V. Casale about their body of work--a band whose musical and visual identity showed teenage me that it was o.k. to be different, weird, and skeptical. Jerry does not suffer fools gladly, so I was quite nervous going into the interview, but once he realized I wasn't going ask about the flower pot hats, we both relaxed and took a serious deep dive into how he and DEVO altered the world forever, as well as how lonely that could be for them. Episode 35 originally aired on May 9th, 2024.The original podcast show notes:This week, the one that started it all for me, Devo's Jerry Casale, joins me on the podcast to talk about Devo's film and video legacy. We discuss the origin story of their first short film, the films that influenced Casale and Devo's aesthetic, their early jobs and the pressures of Ohio, how ‘Bonnie & Clyde' influenced the 'Beautiful World' video, meeting collaborator Chuck Statler, where Rod Rooter's dialogue came from, Club Devo and the difficulties making their merchandise, Jerry tells the plot of the Devo feature-length film script that never got made (including one that was going into production with Francis Ford Coppola & one with William Friedkin), how they directed their conservative looking extras and General Boy, meeting their idols, how they constructed their live shows, phone calls from the video Commissioner of MTV, censorship, working with Soundgarden, Bruce Connor's ‘Mongoloid' short film, transgressive art, people being scared of Devo, Kent State & the Vietnam War as the antecedents of Devolution, crawling out of the basement, the communal mindset of the members of Devo, the antagonistic nature against Devo from interviewers, having fun with the audience while rubbing their nose in it, the groundbreaking & primitive ‘Oh No It's Devo' tour, making ‘The Men Who Make The Music' and having your own action figure made of you.So...peek-a-boo...let's all get devolved together on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!JERRY CASALE (videos, action figures, music, art):https://www.geraldvcasale.com/DEVO:https://www.clubdevo.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Buon ascolto!

ATOME PLC (AIM:ATOM) CEO Olivier Mussat talked with Proactive about a landmark milestone for the company's Villeta green fertiliser project in Paraguay. The company has signed its first definitive engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) agreement with Swiss firm Casale S.A. Mussat explained that this agreement marks the world's first large-scale green hydrogen fertiliser project to reach the EPC stage, underlining its global relevance. “It's significant for us as a company because we've announced that we had been working on the front-end engineering and design for more than two years now,” Mussat said, noting the long-term collaboration with Casale. He highlighted Casale's industry-leading expertise, describing the firm as the oldest ammonia licensor globally, with the ability to deliver complex, full-chain fertiliser projects. According to Mussat, the partnership serves as a strategic blueprint for Casale's future growth. Looking ahead, ATOME aims to reach a final investment decision on the Villeta project by the end of the first half of the year. The company is working to finalise offtake agreements and complete financial documentation for both debt and equity funding. This includes a $115 million equity commitment from Hy24, with further syndication in progress. For more updates on green hydrogen and clean energy developments, visit Proactive's YouTube channel. When the Safavid dynasty, founded in 1501, built a state that championed Iranian identity and Twelver Shi'ism, it prompted the more established Ottoman Empire to align itself definitively with Sunni legalism. The political, religious, and military conflicts that arose have since been widely studied, but little attention has been paid to their diplomatic relationship. In Gifts in the Age of Empire: Ottoman-Safavid Cultural Exchange, 1500–1639 (University of Chicago Press, 2023), Dr. Sinem Arcak Casale sets out to explore these two major Muslim empires through a surprising lens: gifts. Countless treasures—such as intricate carpets, gilded silver cups, and ivory-tusk knives—flowed from the Safavid to the Ottoman Empire throughout the sixteenth century. While only a handful now survive, records of these gifts exist in court chronicles, treasury records, poems, epistolary documents, ambassadorial reports, and travel narratives. Tracing this elaborate archive, Dr. Casale treats gifts as representative of the complicated Ottoman-Safavid coexistence, demonstrating how their rivalry was shaped as much by culture and aesthetics as it was by religious or military conflict. Gifts in the Age of Empire explores how gifts were no mere accessories to diplomacy but functioned as a mechanism of competitive interaction between these early modern Muslim courts. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Robert Kidney of The Numbers Band 15-60-75 : Part 2 on Zig At The Gig. Robert Kidney founding member, singer songwriter, composer, and guitarist for the Number band. The Numbers Band (a.k.a. 15-60-75) are an American blues rock[1] and experimental rock band formed in Kent, Ohio, United States in 1969. They are part of the 'Akron Sound' that sprang forth from their home state. The original personnel were Robert Kidney (guitar, lead vocals), the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde's brother Terry Hynde (saxophone), Hank Smith (guitar, keyboards), Greg Colbert (bass) and Tim Hudson (drums). Chris Butler, from Tin Huey and The Waitresses, also played in the band for a stint as a bassist. They premiered as a live act at the local nightspot The Kove in July 1970. Later, they incorporated jazzy influences as well and they have stuck with their sound ever since. By 1972, Gerald Casale, future co-founder of Devo (bass), and David Robinson were added to the lineup. Casale was thrown out after wearing a monkey mask onstage. Due to interior pressures, Kidney terminated the project by year's end and joined his brother Jack's band, King of Hearts. However, King of Hearts reformed as a new Numbers Band a few weeks later with a retooled lineup that consisted of the Kidney brothers, Hynde, Drake Gleason (bass) and Jay Brown (drums). After two years of playing gigs, Brown left the band and Robinson came back. Michael Stacey (guitar), was added prior to the cutting of their 1976 live album Jimmy Bell's Still in Town. The following year, Gleason was replaced by Bart Johnson (bass). The Numbers Band, like most of the other Ohioans, never became renowned nationally and were not signed by the major labels. This week, the one that started it all for me, Devo's Jerry Casale, joins me on the podcast to talk about Devo's film and video legacy. We discuss the origin story of their first short film, the films that influenced Casale and Devo's aesthetic, their early jobs and the pressures of Ohio, how ‘Bonnie & Clyde' influenced the 'Beautiful World' video, meeting collaborator Chuck Statler, where Rod Rooter's dialogue came from, Club Devo and the difficulties making their merchandise, Jerry tells the plot of the Devo feature-length film script that never got made (including one that was going into production with Francis Ford Coppola & one with William Friedkin), how they directed their conservative looking extras and General Boy, meeting their idols, how they constructed their live shows, phone calls from the video Commissioner of MTV, censorship, working with Soundgarden, Bruce Connor's ‘Mongoloid' short film, transgressive art, people being scared of Devo, Kent State & the Vietnam War as the antecedents of Devolution, crawling out of the basement, the communal mindset of the members of Devo, the antagonistic nature against Devo from interviewers, having fun with the audience while rubbing their nose in it, the groundbreaking & primitive ‘Oh No It's Devo' tour, making ‘The Men Who Make The Music' and having your own action figure made of you.So...peek-a-boo...let's all get devolved together on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!!!JERRY CASALE (videos, action figures, music, art):https://www.geraldvcasale.com/DEVO:https://www.clubdevo.com/LIMITED EDITION REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE SHIRT:revolutionspermovie.bandcamp.comREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. FOUR ACTIONABLE TAKEAWAYS Do not neglect internal research when you're preparing for a sales call. Find out if your company has spoken to them before and dig internally. Prep for your sales calls by understanding lookalike conversations your team has had in the past. Use the lighthouse email to engage someone at the top, mid-deal cycle. Don't just pull them into the boat. Let them know that the boat is there and you have an awesome champion so they can affirm you're in the right place. Don't say “AI” in your sales call. Instead, focus on the problem they want to solve and what they want to do.
