After losing her mom at just 13 years old, she was forced to move in with grandparents and friends, and away from her hometown of Quinlan, TX. In this episode, she shares her most precious story of salvation from an unlikely source and how a God encounter changed everything. This episode is part love story as she talks about her childhood sweetheart who she is not only married to, but together, they have five children. Through her adoption journey, they added a young daughter just months into their marriage and later three natural children and second adoption of their oldest daughter. From the time of leaving her home town to the present, in her journey of healing, God reignited a dream and presented an opportunity to go back to her and her husband's hometown to love the city and the people of which they call home.     On this episode of The Awake Podcast, we sat down with Rick and Dr. Abbie Smith of Richardson, TX. Through the relationship of two 10-year-old boys, we've come to know, love and appreciate the work they are doing in this world. As advocates for families with Down Syndrome, they are on their own journey with their 10-year-old son Noah and his brothers, Jaxten and Cohen. After finding out a half hour after Noah's birth that he was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, God put it on their hearts to change the conversation forever. Abbie, a general pediatrician, and her husband Rick are the founders of Hope Story. Rick, Noah's dad, runs his blog, the nonprofit and speaks globally to advocate, support and champion families who are facing and living this diagnosis. Hope Story is partnering OB/GYNs all over the country with success stories of raising children with Down Syndrome and giving them the tools to start the conversations. Rick also shares how we can support this community of incredibly special people and gives us tools to start conversations. This episode far exceeded my expectations. We thought we were sitting down with two fun parents who have this incredible boy and friend of Max. We thought we were sitting with our kids' pediatrician to chat about life with Noah, but what we learned is so much more! Tanya Randazzo, mother of 2, is learning the challenges of high school and elementary education while continuing to work outside the home. Janet Cagle is navigating education of her elementary and junior high daughters while her husband runs their construction business outside the home. Allison Burke, mother of 3 kids at home (one is an adult and out of the house), is navigating two high schoolers and an an elementary daughter as well as running a non profit and attending college for her undergrad. Jen and I are right in the mix as we lead our church, our homes and the Awake Podcast all while working day jobs and educating our kids while our husbands (and producers) also work from home. To say our homes are full is an understatement. They are full of life, activity, filth, energy, projects, stress, joy, frustration, laughter, family meals and quality time.
