Send us Fan Mail“Have you ever shot someone?” Most cops will be asked this throughout their careers, including myself. Most cops go to retirement without having to take a life. Then others have been involved in multiple officer-involved shootings (OIS). Most of the time, there is no rhyme or reason to this. Although your chances of being involved in an OIS are much greater if you are actually doing police work and not hiding behind a desk for 25 years. Welcome back, everyone, to the conclusion of one of the most dramatic and impactful stories I have ever encountered since I started this podcast with Police Officer Michael Martinez of the San Diego Police Department. A little about Mike. Michael Martinez has been a police officer with the San Diego Police Department for about 10 years. After phase training, he was assigned to Southern Division, where he worked a variety of assignments, including Patrol, Acting Detective, and Field Training Officer. Officer Martinez has been involved in four Officer-Involved Shootings, the first three within his first 18 months after field training. He took advantage of a career-and life-changing opportunity that was offered to him by the San Diego Police Department's Wellness Unit. He was diagnosed with PTSD and now shares his story with fellow law enforcement officers. He is currently a member of the Department's OIS Peer Support Team and is currently assigned to the Department's Wellness Unit. Officer Martinez has received numerous awards and commendations, including a Medal for Valor. He truly believes his assignment is his calling to help others who are struggling in silence. His goal is to break the stigma of seeking and receiving help within the first responder profession and to be a resource to officers and their families. I admire Mike's honesty and willingness to help other cops who have gone through the trauma of being in an OIS. Mike has been through the wringer and is now helping his fellow cops. Please enjoy this raw and powerful interview with Police Officer Mike Martinez. In today's episode, we discuss:· The second officer involved shooting. Has he gone back to where it happened?· Did he react differently to this one compared to the first?· The third officer involved in a shooting. Did any bosses or friends suggest that he take a break from the street? How was his drinking and family life?· A breakdown of the third OIS.· The wellness unit confronting him while he was drunk.· His path towards a first responder-only treatment facility.· His experience there: how long and what did that treatment look like?.· Life after treatment.· Being voluntold to be on the wellness unit.· An overview of his fourth officer-involved shooting. · What was different about this one in how he dealt with it?· Was there ever a time when he thought perhaps he was in the wrong line of work and should get out while he was still in one piece?· His advice to someone who is going through a tough patch in their police career.· How can someone prepare for a career in LE? Michael Martinez grew up in San Diego and started getting into trouble as a teenager before turning his life around and heading to Hawaii for college. His goal was to serve and protect — but his past made getting into law enforcement a challenge. While waiting to be accepted, he worked animal control in San Diego County before finally joining the San Diego Police Department. Within his first two years, Michael was involved in three officer-involved shootings, an experience that led to severe PTSD, alcoholism, and a complete personal breakdown. This episode dives deep into the reality behind the badge — the trauma, the toll, and the long road to redemption. Michael opens up about how he rebuilt his life, saved his family, and learned that asking for help isn't weakness — it's survival. #PoliceStory #TrueCrimePodcast #AddictionRecovery #FormerCop #PoliceShootings #MentalHealthAwareness #LawEnforcementLife #redemptionjourney Thank you to BLUECHEW, AURA FRAMES & PRIZEPICKS for sponsoring this episode: BlueChew: Get 10% off your first month of BlueChew Gold with code LOCKEDIN. In the final episode of our series on Ann Landers and Dear Abby, the feud reached new heights when Abby fell victim to a “gotcha” moment on Charlie Rose. (Who woulda guessed?) Afterward, she agreed to an interview with Ladies' Home Journal. In it, she said awful things about Ann. Years later, when Ann died, the feud went intergenerational between the sisters' two daughters — daughters who became, you guessed it, advice columnists. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For a few years, the feud between twin sisters Ann Landers and Dear Abby was an industry secret. That changed in 1958, when Life Magazine printed a story that exposed the rivalry. In the article, Abby shared stories that weren't hers to tell. She talked about Ann's nose job. She talked about Ann's broken engagement. Abby told the reporter, “I understand why she's disturbed. She wanted to be the first violin in the school orchestra, but I was. She swore she'd marry a millionaire, but I did.” From that point on, the sisters' feud became part of their permanent public narrative. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! Ann Landers was thrilled. She'd just landed a job as the new syndicated advice columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times. Her new role gave Ann something to call her own. Then, just three months later, her twin sister Abby shared some news. She'd gotten a job as an advice columnist, too. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For decades, Dear Abby and Ann Landers were the undisputed queens of advice columns. They had millions of loyal readers. They were celebrated public figures. Their columns stood out for being sassy, sharp, and at times, shockingly progressive. But, behind the scenes, the twin sisters had a contentious, competitive relationship. In this episode, we set the scene for the women they would one day become. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! On April 9, 1997, shortly after midnight in Buffalo, NY, Officers Charles “Skip” McDougald and Michael Martinez were patrolling near Northampton and East Parade in Buffalo’s East Side when they observed what they described as a “suspicious person.” According to police accounts, when they approached, the individual produced a handgun and fired. Officer McDougald was struck in the chest and fatally wounded, and Officer Martinez was shot and seriously injured but survived. Nineteen-year-old Jonathan Parker was convicted for the shooting death of Officer McDougald and the attempted murder of Officer Martinez, and was sentenced to life without parole plus consecutive terms. The prosecution’s case rested heavily on eyewitness testimony and seized items, while Parker has consistently maintained his innocence. Ready to Deep Dive into our guest's personalities? It's time for “5 Questions With…” We put our previous guests back on the hot seat to answer 5 more burning, quirky and random questions we just had to know. Back today are the boys of Lonely Parrots, Michael Martinez and Max Embers, an emerging folk pop duo from the San Francisco Bay Area. Their music blends catchy tunes with poignant themes of love, loss, growth, and self-discovery. The duo's harmonious collaborations promise to leave an indelible mark on the music scene. Their journey began when Max saw a flock of wild parrots, which inspired them to write a joke song. This led to the creation of their first song, 'Coldplay,' and the formation of Lonely Parrots. Their songwriting styles blend seamlessly, with influences from R&B and musical theater. And the questions are ready to go………. Casual word games is a tough, tough category to compete in on mobile. Not only is it a very crowded red ocean, but casual games are notoriously hard to monetize effectively through IAPs, making user acquisition even more difficult than it already is in the post-IDFA world. That said, Funcraft is making it work in their favor, building a thriving, growing business with an expanding portfolio of games and with the ability to spend profitably, at scale, on user acquisition. With a small team of experienced industry veterans, investments in systems, processes, and analytics, as well as a second-to-none ad mediation stack, Funcraft is a great case study in how it is still possible to compete with the big guys — and win. To learn more about how Funcraft is making it work, your host Niko Vuori talks with Michael Martinez, Founder & CEO of Funcraft. Funcraft: https://www.funcraft.com/.
