The Vulcan Hello (Star Trek: Discovery, S1 E1) was recommended by Advik Goel (he/him) - Add-vic Go-El, who said: This episode was actually my entry point into the Star Trek franchise, outside of the first of the Kelvin-verse movies, so it holds a place in my heart even if DIS as a whole doesn't relative to other series anymore.Beyond that, I think the debate over the Vulcan Hello and its merits has always fascinated me. The show lays it out as a debate between the Federation's principles of not being the people to fire the first shot in a potential conflict, and a signal which will ensure the Klingons' respect and prevent a war.I think there is something delightfully contradictory about Vulcan and Klingon cultural norms and signals being seen as oppositional to the Federation's doctrine, despite the Vulcan's being core members of the Federation.While Burnham's mutiny is clearly the wrong way to win an argument, I have to question why the characters meant to represent a more typical Federation viewpoint, like Georgiou, are unfamiliar or unwilling to entertain the merits of something like a Vulcan Hello. The History Book Club is staying with the 20th century as we discuss the V-Force, the aircraft best exemplified by the Vulcan which was the plane that played a huge role in the James Bond film, Thunderball. It was a remarkably beautiful engineering feat, that remains an iconic vision of where British design and science was at in the 1950s. It was capable of flying vast distances where it was intended to deliver its payload, a nuclear bomb. Perhaps its most well-known mission was a bombing run during the Falklands War in 1982. A research paper published a couple of years ago featured an ominous title: “The Death of Vulcan.” A team of astronomers killed off a possible planet around the star 40 Eridani. In the lore of Star Trek, the star is the home of the planet Vulcan. 40 Eridani is actually a triple star. The main star is the one that’s supposed to host Vulcan. It’s a little smaller and lighter than the Sun, and only about 40 percent as bright. It’s probably older than the Sun, so there’s been plenty of time for life to develop on any planets that orbit the star. And in 2018, astronomers reported the possible discovery of one. The planet would have been a “super-Earth” – about eight times Earth’s mass. But the discovery was tentative. And several follow-ups found little evidence to support it. One concern was that the planet appeared to orbit the star once every 42 days. But that’s about the same period as the star’s rotation. And according to the 2024 study, that’s no coincidence. The earlier study had actually detected activity on the surface of the star. That activity looked like the signal of an orbiting planet. So a possible planet Vulcan vanished in the starlight. 40 Eridani is in the constellation Eridanus, the river. The star is in the southeast at nightfall, well to the upper right of Orion’s Belt.
