On this week's episode of our show, we are taking a look at three animated episodes of Star Trek. The first takes us back to the original animated series, where our old pal Harry Mudd is up to no good yet again. The second takes us to Lower Decks, where the evil Badgey resurfaces to wreak havoc on the galaxy. The third takes us to Prodigy, where our heroes must figure out how to repair the timeline that they have inadvertently damaged. Join us as we go boldly!
Harry Mudd is back and he's out for revenge in "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad"! He's got some inexplicable time magic creating a loop that should allow him to pull off the perfect heist, and a spore-dappled Stamets might be the only person that can throw a wrench into his plans! With a little help from our main character, of course. Also this week: whalebutt transport, tonal dissonance, and...oh. Jonathan Archer. Ugh. SHOW NOTES It's November, so our Casual Explorers have novels to write, but we also want to bring you the innovative Casual Content you crave, so we're going to go through all of Short Trek in a two part binge. We've make some new friends alongside Tilly as we discover that Ice Cream isn't a universal constant like Sweedish Meatballs (Babylon 5 fans will get that one) in Runaway while in the far-future, things feel a bit like the opener to most RPGs with FPS mechanics in Calypse. After that, things go a little bit folk horror for the Kelpians as we get Saru's secret origin in The Brightest Star while Miles becomes disturbingly obsessed with saying 'Jippers on a Beach' like he's Harry Mudd in The Escape Artists. Next episode will see us wrap up the Short Excursion with the second season of Short Treks!- 8:01- Runaway (ST)- 19:21- Calypso (ST) - 29:21- The Brightest Star (ST) - 39:17- The Escape Artists (ST) Talking points include- Harlan Ellison's agressive tendencies, The Exorcist II: The Heretic, Wes Anderson and The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar, Charlie hates Maroon 5 (But when pressed on this, he simply replied 'Who Doesn't?'), we had a LOT of music on this one, Asteroid City, folk horror, Bioshock and RPGS with First Person Shooter Tendencies, Classic Doctor Who fans having very obsessive tendencies, every time Charlie talks about Delgrassi Junior High, he paints an ever more disturbing image of a Canadian Teen Drama written and directed by Sam Peckinpah, Quinton Review's Long YouTube Videos about Carly 101 and VicTORIous, Rick and Morty and apparantly the British being unable to pronounce anyone's names correctly. Pedants Corner: Miles is editing the two Short Trek episodes and that has inspired him to take some of the editing load off Charlie giving them both one episode a month to edit, there may be a few spotty edits, but there we go. The Quinton Review discussion went in a few tangents dealing with personal stuff that both Miles and Charlie decided were best left out of the episode itself. Captain Kirk pursues his biggest nuisance to a planet in the Arcadian system, where, sure enough, he finds Harry Mudd peddling his latest drug -- a so-called love potion -- to the miners working there. Turns out this love potion actually works and soon makes its way through the crew of the Enterprise, starting with Mr. Spock, much to the initial delight of Nurse Chapel. Completing a trilogy of sorts that started with "Mudd's Women" (one of the first "Star Trek" episodes ever produced) Stephen Kandell returned to write "Mudd's Passion" for "The Animated Series," which, fortunately, also saw Roger C. Carmel reprising his role as Harry Mudd. (Sorry, but there's no way James Doohan could have pulled that one off!) While far from being the crowning achievement of "The Animated Series," "Mudd's Passion" is an enjoyable-enough episode for "Star Trek" fans that saw the return of a beloved character. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Mudd's Women, which aired on October 13, 1966, Star Date 1329.1. Harry Mudd attempts to evade the Enterprise with his small class J cargo ship and leads it into an asteroid field. The Enterprise extends its shields over Harvey's ship, burning out three of its four lithium crystals. The crew of the Enterprise becomes fascinated with the three beautiful women Mudd has been transporting. As a result of the destruction of three of its lithium crystals, the Enterprise is forced to divert to Rigel 12 to obtain new crystals. Mudd makes his bargain with the lithium miners on the planet. At Mudd's prompting, the miners offer to provide Kirk with lithium only in exchange for Mudd's freedom and the three women. Kirk learns the women's beauty secret: Mudd has been providing them with the Venus drug. Kirk beams down to collect the lithium from Childress while providing Evie with red gelatin she believes to be the Venus drug. Evie believes herself again to be beautiful and unintentionally reveals her natural inner beauty. In the end, Kirk gets his lithium, Evie remains with Childress, and Mudd is taken into custody. It’s the return of fan-favorite villain, scoundrel, and generally bad human being Harry Mudd. This time, his shenanigans involve 23rd century date rape drugs. Is it possible to mishandle a long-standing supporting crew member to such a degree that it insults the audience, and brings shame to the entire show? [...]
Harry Mudd is back, now with a gap in his teeth.
When an android posing as a crewman hijacks the Enterprise to an uncharted planet, Captain Kirk discovers the true culprit to be his old nemesis, Harry Mudd. His plan: to strand Kirk and his crew on the planet, where they will be served by a race of androids, while he escapes to his freedom on the Enterprise. But Mudd's plan backfires when the androids turn on him and decide to leave him behind with the rest of Kirk's crew, while they set out across the galaxy to conquer the human race and "protect" mankind from itself. The stakes are indeed high in "I, Mudd," which is a stark contrast to the more lighthearted, fun and madcap tone that permeates it. It's a total departure from anything ever attempted before on "Star Trek," but the producers and cast members make it work by leaning into the farce of it all and running with it. Everyone is clearly having a ball, especially William Shatner and returning cast member Roger C. Carmel as Harcourt Fenton Mudd. This week on Episode 519 of Priority One: Kurtzman and Trek, Gene Roddenberry's archive goes into an NFT digital world, and plenty of new Star Trek related products to add to your wishlist. In Gaming: rock out with your targ out when Mary Chieffo goes metal for Star Trek Online, and Modiphius has new goodies to add to your tabletop Star Trek Adventures! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Kurtzman's Next 5-Year Mission By Elio Lleo Since we've been gone, quite a lot has happened. Although we'd love to cover it all, we'll have to narrow it down to the news that we think matters most—starting Alex Kurtzman's new 5-year/$160 million contract with Paramount+ to develop not only Star Trek, but other projects as well. The New York Times's Nicole Sperling published an article on August 1, 2021, featuring interviews with Kurtzman and other major players involved. The article explores Kurtzman's past, present, and future projects for the studio and the hopes he has for the franchise. Something particularly interesting though, was the announcement that a “Starfleet Academy” series is in the works which “will be aimed at a younger audience.” Also, according to Sperling: Mr. Kurtzman, who wants to get much weirder with the franchise… points to a pitch from Graham Wagner (Portlandia, Silicon Valley), centered on the character Worf, that he calls “incredibly funny, poignant and touching. If it were up to me only, I would be pushing the boundaries much further than I think most people would want,” he said. “I think we might get there. Marvel has actually proven that you can. But you have to build a certain foundation in order to get there and we're still building our foundation.” Becoming Props of Pure Energy By Cat Hough Announced at Las Vegas, Gene Roddenberry's personal archives are being comprehensively digitized on an unprecedented scale, with plans to do some fancy sci-fi things with the material. The joint effort between the Roddenberry estate, OTOY, and Light Field Lab, hopes to preserve thousands of photos, documents, and physical assets like starship models in extreme digital detail, preserving it for future study and recreation. https://youtu.be/0bDuT-4cFyg The Roddenberry Archives will use OTOY's blockchain-based computer rendering network to extensively digitize the Roddenberry estate's collection from the producer's work on the Star Trek franchise. Long time Trek writers Denise and Michael Okuda, artist Mike “Beeple” Winklemann, and comics legend Alex Ross are also contributing to the project. Beyond the historical importance of maintaining the extensive archives, OTOY intends to leverage the assets for fan experiences. The company will work with display startup Light Field Lab to recreate a 1:1 scale holographic replica of the U.S.S. Enterprise as seen in the original series. It claims to be able to use the original models seen in filming the series to create a projected replica “indistinguishable from reality” for “one of the world's first fully immersive holographic installation experiences.” What is this, a starship for ants??? Image: OTOY. Rod Roddenberry had this to say: “I cannot think of a more capable and innovative company to trust with these materials. OTOY's work will allow generations to experience my father's contribution to humanity with the greatest historical accuracy possible. This project will protect an optimistic vision of the future that has inspired so many and remains so important today.” Play(mobil)ing Into The Enemy's Hands By Rosco McQueen Speaking of bringing Star Trek to life, the classic Enterprise [no bloody A, B, C, or D--Ed.] is warping into your living room. Playmobil's newly-announced model starship comes complete with seven crewmembers (Kirk's two-handed punch and kung-fu grip not confirmed). The model itself is over a meter long with lights, sound, its own dedicated mounting and augmented reality app. Of course it's for my niece, that's totally who I'm buying it for. Image: Playmobil. It's impressive in size and, according to the release, there are more technical details yet to be announced. I can't wait to hear more about what this toy collector's item has hidden away in the shuttle bay. But from the photos there is a lot to like, with light-up Bussard collectors and exceptional attention to detail. Plus, in a Playmobil first: Mr. Spock is the first figure in the company's history to have (Vulcan) ears!. But if you're more into relaxing with a good book, then Titan Books has just the thing. Their latest release takes an inside look at the franchise's bad guys with Star Trek: Villains, the Federation's deadliest foes collected in one terrifying volume. The book features interviews with the actors behind the baddies such as Alice Krige (the Borg Queen), Christopher Plummer (General Chang), and Ricardo Montalbahn (KHAAAAAAAAN!) and profiles of alien foes such as the Romulans, the Gorn, the Dominion, and the Klingons. The book is available for pre-order now through Amazon in the US and Canada, and Forbidden Planet in the UK and Europe. Boy bands in the future are going to be wild. Image: Titan Books, via Red Shirts Always Die. Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his involvement with the horror series Slasher, David Cronenberg also hinted that we may see his Star Trek: Discovery character in three episodes in Season 4. A couple of interesting conversations were had in Las Vegas this year; although we weren't there to report on the events ourselves, be sure to visit TrekMovie.com for highlights like Rainn Wilson wanting to bring back Harry Mudd, and Kenneth Mitchell teasing a return to the franchise. STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds Today Is A Good Day to ROCK By Elio Lleo Captains, while we were away, the most epic thing hit the internet. Something so awesome, that we feel as though we should add a faux cautionary disclaimer before talking about it: Priority One is not responsible for side-effects caused by the sheer awesomeness of the following story. The Mother of All Klingons—Mary Chieffo—joined forces with Star Trek Online and singer/songwriter Jason Charles Miller to produce a song for the ages: Steel and Flame!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOirKrzSVgI In celebration of this year's Klingon story arc in Star Trek Online, Mary Chieffo goes all out in an original heavy metal song—entirely in Klingon. Harry Mudd sells women! We get into the difference between magic and science fiction and try to skate the narrow edge of parody and misogyny. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-measure-of-an-episode/message
Mudd's Women was the sixth episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, as an intergalactic rogue leverages a unique situation in an effort to secure his freedom. In this episode Gerry and Iain take a look at unambitious women and the social calendar of Rigel XII. Harry Mudd (Roger C. Carmel) and his 'cargo', Ruth (Maggie Thrett), Magda (Susan Denberg) and Eve (Karen Steele) arrive on the Enterprise with a secret to keep, but soon find themselves in a position to influence Kirk's decision-making. On Rigel XII the miners, Ben (Gene Dynarski), Herm (Jon Kowal) and Benton (Seamon Glass), look forward to the arrival of their promised wives, knowing they control a resource the Enterprise can't manage without. Mudd's Women was directed by Harvey Hart and was written by Stephen Kandel (from a Gene Roddenberry story idea). Hart was not invited back to the series after concerns about 'camera cutting', but Kandel became the go-to writer for all things Harry Mudd. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether Mudd's motivations were in any way honourable; and lamented the missed opportunity to create female characters with a bit more depth than this trio. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. Mudd's Women was released in 1966. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

This week Star Trek Discovery boldly goes where the franchise has only gone once before. Have you ever felt like you're living the same event over again? Have you every felt like you're watching the same episode you've already seen before? What about watching the same episode that you've already seen before involving a story where people have lived the same day over and over? If you haven't caught on yet, we have all seen this latest episode of Discovery before when it was called 'Cause and Effect' on The Next Generation. Despite the show clearly running out of original ideas only 7 episodes in, do Colin and Jamie have good things to say about this remake? You bet they do, and his name is Harry Mudd. But stay tuned all the way to the end to hear the plot hole that almost ruined it all.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
