Into the Forest I Go. In a last-ditch effort to penetrate the Klingon cloaking technology, the crew of the USS Discovery develop a plan that puts the lives of Lieutenant Tyler and Specialist Burnham in danger. Once aboard the Ship of the Dead, the pair make an unexpected discovery: Admiral Cornwell is alive and being held prisoner by General Kol. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Stamets is put through an incredible test of endurance as the spore drive transforms Discovery into a 3D camera. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala and Amy Nelson are joined by Sarah Buck to discuss the ninth episode of Star Trek: Discovery, “Into the Forest I Go.” And in our news segment, Mike Schindler and Max Hegel discuss the January return and compare the mid-season cliffhanger to those of past Star Trek. The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry. A mining colony on Corvan II is under attack by Klingons. The Federation has sent Discovery to their aid, but the only way to arrive in time to save the colonists is to use the new spore drive. But what cost is Captain Lorca willing to pay for their rescue? Do the ends justify the means? According to Lorca, they do. He is willing to do anything and sacrifice anyone to win the war against the Klingon Empire—no matter how loud the lamb's cry. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Aaron Harvey welcome Davis Grayson to discuss the fourth episode of Star Trek: Discovery. We explore Lorca's character development, look at the interactions between Michael Burnham and the crew, and discuss the Klingon goal of unification. We also answer the question of whether Gene Roddenberry's vision of a better and more hopeful future is present in this new iteration of Star Trek. Shatner, Part 4: Showtime. One week after the release of Festival in Cannes, the third film in the Shatner Cinematic Universe made its way to the silver screen. Showtime features Robert De Niro and Eddie Murphy as two cops are forced to work together as part of a reality television show. Along the way, they receive tips on how to become TV cops, by none other than T.J. Hooker himself, William Shatner. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Mike, Max and John look at William Shatner as himself in Showtime. We discuss the quality of the movie, how Shatner's performance elevates the entire picture, and what the film adds to the mythology of the Shatnerverse. We also reveal Mike and Max's unhealthy obsession with William Shatner in the workplace. Shatner, Part 1: Trek. William Shatner is excellent at what he does, which is everything. But one thing which he is the absolute best at is playing himself. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Mike, Max and John begin their new series which looks at the films of the "Shatnerverse," movies in which William Shatner plays himself. These include Free Enterprise, Festival in Cannes, Showtime, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Fanboys. In the first part of the series, we look at Shatner's work in Star Trek, as both an actor and director. Burton, Part 3: Reading Rainbow Years before barrel-rolling into our hearts as Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: The Next Generation, LeVar Burton was already very well established from years of work as the host and producer of Reading Rainbow. The PBS series encouraged children to read by offering book recommendations accompanied by filmed "field trips," which took a closer look at the real-world elements from the stories. Over the course of the show's sixteen seasons, Burton won twelve Emmy Awards. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Mike, Max and John take a look at Burton's work on Reading Rainbow. Burton, Part 2: Roots. LeVar Burton's first on-screen performance is also the first to earn him an Emmy nomination. At the age of twenty, he burst onto the scene in the television miniseries, Roots. The show looks at the history of an African American family over the span of a century, from slavery through liberation. Burton leads a huge cast of critically-acclaimed veteran actors, and received a Best Lead Actor nomination for his efforts. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, John, Mike and Max look at Burton's work on Roots. We discuss the cultural impact of the series, Burton's performance, and how his portrayal of Kunta Kinte influenced people's perceptions of history. We also remember TOS director Joseph Sargent, and take a look at who's writing STAR TR3K. Commentary: Trek Stars: The Work of Star Trek Creators Outside of Star Trek
Taylor, Part 1: Trek. In 1992, Michael Piller turned his attention towards his new Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine. This left a void in the Next Generation writer's room. That void was filled by Jeri Taylor. Under her guidance, the last two season of TNG produced some the best Trek of all-time, and earned the series its only Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama. On the strength of that work, Taylor was given the task of creating the next Star Trek series, Voyager, which she also ran for the first four seasons. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, we begin a new series which looks at Taylor's work as a television writer/producer. In our first part, Mike, Max, and John are joined by Charlynn Schmiedt of To The Journey to examine Taylor's work in Trek. We discuss her first episode, her TNG highlights, her work as a showrunner on TNG, and the creation of Voyager. Introducing John. The Original Series had Chekov. Deep Space Nine had Worf. Voyager had Seven of Nine. Sometimes your favorite shows need a little help. Commentary: Trek Stars is no exception. Starship Mine. Life and death situations and small talk go together like Picard and Earl Grey, Troi and chocolate, or Geordi and PowerPoint presentations. Right? Well, they do in “Starship Mine,” a sixth season TNG episode that features a never-before-heard-of particle, a horse saddle, and possibly the most annoying commander in Starfleet. But "Starship Mine" is much more than a bad party with The Hutch. It's also Die Hard in Space. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Darren Moser, Mike Schindler, and Max Hegel to discuss Morgan Gendel's second TNG outing, how it uses the Die Hard framework without imitating it, the difference between trilithium and trilithium resin (hint: there may not be any), and why it may be a better episode than Gendel's more famous episode "The Inner Light." In our news segment, we read a letter from one Captain James T. Kirk to a Captain James Kirk in the US Navy, find out what award the Boston chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has for Leonard Nimoy, Oculus Rift's virtual trip to the USS Voyager bridge, and colliding timelines that combine Q and Guinan with the Abramsverse.
Signing Off. This week we bring you the final episode of Trek News & Views with voice messages, email, and the final discussion. Colin is joined by Daniel Proulx of Earl Grey, Mike Schindler and Max Hegel of Commentary: Trek Stars, and Trek.fm publisher and host of The Ready Room Christopher Jones for one more trip through the world of Star Trek. True to all our previous shows we go off topic here and there, but in general it’s Trek. In general. Thanks for sharing the journey with us here on Trek News & Views.
For the Uniform. We knew from the start that Benjamin Sisko had a temper. After all, he punched Q in the face in the sixth episode of the series. But if you really make Sisko mad he'll do more than just punch you. He'll chase you down in a broken ship and then try to punch a holographic projection of you. That's what happened to Michael Eddington when he decided to escalate the Maquis-Starfleet conflict by sabotaging the Defiant and attacking a Cardassian colony with biogenic weapons. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Ben McCormick, Mike Schindler, and Max Hegel to discuss Peter Allan Fields's futuristic take on Les Misérables, the extreme tactics of both Eddington and Sisko, and how this episode paves the way for another of Fields's classics, “In the Pale Moonlight.” We also explore the creative communication methods employed in this story, including the holographic communicator and the shouting Ferengi. In news we get into the Halloween mood with our favorite scary or spooky Star Trek episodes, debate the results of a poll that asked which character should have died differently, take a look at a new Starfleet uniforms infographic, and hear a few tidbits about the next Star Trek film.
Homefront / Paradise Lost. In the 24th century Earth is a paradise. At least that's what we've been led to believe. But paranoia can drive even the residents of paradise to begin burning down the house, and that's what happened at the heart of the Federation when the Changeling threat reached Earth. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Michael Fisher, Max Hegel, and Mike Schindler to discuss the mid-season two-parter that was originally planned as the third-season cliffhanger and fourth-season premiere, what it says about civil rights during times of danger, Gene Roddenberry's utopian vision versus reality, and how Worf's addition to the show changed the story's original concept. In our news segment we discuss some interesting comments about the Star Trek video game from J.J. Abrams, his decision on directing the next film, which Starfleet engineer would make the best handyman, and our first venture into interstellar space with Voyager 1.
A Taste of Armageddon. In this episode of Trek News & Views Colin is joined by Drew Stewart and Max Hegel for another trip into the worlds of TOS with “A Taste of Armageddon.” We talk about sonic weapons, Apple-product love, synthetic burgers, Drew and his love of fabric, how the Vulcans made ancient Earth monuments, and of course how Kirk yet again leaves a planet on the brink of annihilation.
100 Things We Love About Star Trek. This week we reach a milestone: our 100th show! To help us celebrate the occasion we've gathered members of the Trek.fm crew from all around the globe for a double-length feature. In this episode of The Ready Room we forego our usual format as Matthew Rushing, Charlynn Schmiedt, Drew Stewart, Lorrie Sears, Thomas Baddeley, Max Hegel, Daniel Proulx, Mariel Keeran, and Matt Miller join us for an informal chat about a hundred things we love about Star Trek. In an abbreviated news segment we hear from one of our most devoted listeners and check in on Star Trek: The Exhibition as it kicks off in San Diego. We also look at some very limited autographed collectibles from Amazon and Celebrity Authentics signed by William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Zachary Quinto.
In a Mirror, Darkly. TOS and DS9 aren’t the only ones to have romped in the Mirror Universe. Enterprise did it, too, and in this week’s episode of Trek News & Views Colin dives into 22nd-Century evil with the help of Matthew Rushing, Max Hegel, and Mariel Keeran. We look at the TOS tie-ins, how the Temporal Cold War seems to have taken place in some fashion in the Mirror Universe, and why DS9 had no cloak while Archer did. Of course it wouldn’t be Trek News & Views without a bit of digression, and this week we discuss Phlox’s love of animals, how Porthos almost became soup, and how the Terrans resemble the Nazis.
Star Trek (2009). In the same year that Enterprise went black, marking the end of Star Trek on television, Paramount reached out to a new creative team for ideas on how to revive the franchise. What came next was revelation that J.J. Abrams was developing a new Star Trek film. Slowly fans learned that the project was a reboot of the franchise that would recast the iconic roles of Kirk, Spock, and their crew. We're starting everything over again. As the poster said, “The Future Begins.” In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt, Matthew Rushing, and Max Hegel to talk about the first J.J. film, the uproar it caused in the Trek community, where it fits into the overall franchise, and about its strengths and weaknesses. In news we look at summer and autumn tour plans for Star Trek: The Exhibition, new developments in the possible remastering of Deep Space Nine for Blu-ray, Diamond Select's USS Excelsior, Geek Nation Tours “Hollywood to Vegas with Larry Nemecek,” changes to the Star Trek Into Darkness release date, and we talk about IDW's Star Trek Ongoing #20. Plus, Mike Schindler gives a report from the midnight screening of Into Darkness at the BFI IMAX in London.
Scifi Divergence: Battlestar Galactica. This week we bring you a special episode of Trek News and Views, the first of a quarterly cast called “Scifi Divergence” in which Colin goes off tangent to talk about some non-Trek parts of the science fiction world. In this episode Colin is joined by Mike Schindler and Max Hegel of Commentary: Trek Stars along with Joe Myers to discuss Battlestar Galactica—with a bit of divergence into Stargate, Egyptian religion, and how big a difference 700 pounds is from 50 pounds when one is gaining a bit of weight.
Star Trek V Commentary. It’s finally here. The journey you’ve been waiting for: a trip to Paradise City. In this episode of Trek News & Views, Colin joins forces with Mike Schindler and Max Hegel of Commentary Track Stars for a crossover show as they watch—and provide commentary on—Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
Time Travel in Enterprise. There’s always more time to talk time. And this time we head to the 22nd century, or is it the 30th… or the 20th… to talk time travel on Enterprise. In this episode of Trek News & Views, Colin is joined by Mike Schindler and Max Hegel of Commentary: Trek Stars along with not-co-host of The Observation Lounge Drew Stewart to continue our ongoing discussion of time travel—Archer style.
Time Travel in Voyager. Time keeps on slipping… slipping… slipping… into the Delta Quadrant! In this episode of Trek News & Views, Colin is joined by Drew Stewart and Max Hegel to continue our ongoing discussion of time travel—this time as it pertains to Voyager. Along the way they go down a few wormholes including one for health care, one for vowels and the British need for the letter ‘u’, and one in which they find a new storyline in which Harry Kim is the only one not to die!
Time Travel on Deep Space Nine. If you’re going to talk about time travel in Star Trek, then it’s going to take some time. And thus, in this week’s Trek News & Views, we offer the third installment in our podcasting slingshot around the sun. Colin is joined by Miles McLoughlin of the SciFi Diner Podcast, Max Hegel of Commentary Track Stars and Commentary: Trek Stars, and our TOS Editor Drew Stewart to discuss the various excursions through time taken by the crew of DS9. Plus, they examine in detail the build quality of American refrigerators.
Equilibrium. From the beginning we knew that, as a joined species, Jadzia Dax was different. Bit by bit we learned more about the path that she had followed to become joined, and about the symbiont inside her. We learned about her previous host, Curzon, and debated whether one host could be held liable for the actions of past hosts. Then, in season three, we took a deeper look at the past lives of Dax beginning with “Equilibrium,” a story that explored how repressed memories can affect Trill and the truth behind the selection process. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Mike Schindler and Max Hegel of Commentary Track Stars to discuss “Equilibrium,” the concept of the Trill, and the story's unusual genesis. In news we remember Winrich Kolbe and cover a new world record for costumes set at Destination Star Trek London, the TNG Season Two theatrical event, typographic art prints from Generation Gallery, Trek Tones for your iOS device, and we debate which series would make the best movies. Plus, we reveal the truth about what has happened to Greg.
