Some episodes of Star Trek are just so epic, they can't be contained to a mere hour of television. The precedent started in 1966 with Star Trek's, "The Menagerie," and it's a format that occurred all the way up through Star Trek: Enterprise: the two-part episode! Sometimes they're a cliffhanger to give us something to anticipate over the summer hiatus and, other times, they're stories that happen mid-season. In any case, there are things to love about all of them and we'll dive into some of that this week. Joining us to talk about some legendary two-parters are Patreon producers Christina Werther and Chris Tribuzio! It's a fun discussion that we hope you'll enjoy. "Gambit." "Gambit, Parts I and II" are episodes toward the beginning of season 7 of The Next Generation that were unlike anything previously aired in a Star Trek series. After a nearly 30-year ban by Gene Roddenberry on episodes focusing on space pirates, here were two episodes that largely take place on a mercenary ship engaged in piracy. The space pirate ship, however, is really a means to explore how a number of the main characters deal with different roles and situations than we're used to seeing. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Chris Tribuzio, Associate Producer of Earl Grey, to talk about the two-part "Gambit" episode. The discussion includes Picard's initial absence, space pirates, the Picard/Riker and Worf/Data dynamics, Robin Curtis as Tallera, and much more! Such Sweet Sorrow, Part I. Star Trek fans have seen their favorite characters put into some precarious situations over the years. But being tasked with erasing themselves from history? That doesn't happen often. Yet that seems to be the task at hand for Michael Burnham as she sets out on a one-way trip to tomorrow. In this episode of The Edge, host Patrick Devlin is joined by Chris Tribuzio to talk about the fate of Michael Burnham, whether she will really make a trip to the future with no way back, and if we believe the show will go on without her. We also ask whether there were just too many goodbyes and explore the beautiful backdrop created by a special effects team that really gets it. Season 4 Retrospective Part 2. Genetically enhanced humans have popped up in all forms of science fiction media for almost as long as the genre has existed, and Star Trek is no exception. Our first look at "augments," or genetically engineered humans, came in the original Star Trek series episode "Space Seed", when we meet the unforgettable Khan and learn about the Eugenics Wars of Earth past. Gene Roddenberry based this backstory on events from our own history during World War II, when Hitler began examining selective birthing to create a superior race of humans. The United States was not blameless, with physicians and lawmakers using imperfections in family history or other "unwanted" characteristics to deny rights to many citizens. And so we come to Star Trek: Enterprise's entry in the history, the three episodes known as "The Augment Trilogy", heralding Brent Spiner's return to Star Trek as Soong family predecessor, Arik. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Patrick Devlin, Brandi Jackola, and special guest Chris Tribuzio take a look at the season four episodes "Borderland", "Cold Station 12" and "The Augments". We discuss ties to other Star Trek, religious meanings of augment names, big wrestlers and little women, and how a middle-aged man in prison could end up with children.
