Matthew and Riki, along with returning guest Abby, dive deep into Section 31, Star Trek's controversial covert intelligence organization. The discussion explores the ethical implications of having a secretive, unaccountable agency within Starfleet and examines the recent Section 31 movie starring Michelle Yeoh. How does Section 31 challenge Star Trek's utopian vision? The hosts examine the tension between Gene Roddenberry's optimistic future and the pragmatic needs of maintaining galactic peace. They question whether having a CIA-like organization contradicts the Federation's principles of transparency and democracy, drawing parallels to real-world intelligence agencies. Is Starfleet truly just an exploratory organization, or is it fundamentally military—or even colonialist—in nature? The conversation delves into how Section 31's existence reveals deeper truths about Starfleet's dual role as both a diplomatic and military force, challenging the narrative that Starfleet is purely focused on peaceful exploration. What went wrong with the Section 31 movie? The hosts provide a critical analysis of the recent film, discussing how it missed opportunities to explore compelling ethical questions in favor of becoming a less successful attempt at combining Ocean's Eleven with Guardians of the Galaxy.Other key topics discussed:The origins of Section 31 in Star Trek's canon and its controversial inclusion in the Starfleet CharterHow Section 31 has been portrayed across different Star Trek series, from Deep Space Nine to DiscoveryThe role of Michelle Yeoh's character Philippa Georgiou and her involvement with Section 31Comparisons between Section 31 and real-world intelligence organizationsThe evolution of Star Trek beyond Roddenberry's original visionPotential storylines that could have made for a better Section 31 movie**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Another Alex Kurtzman Star Trek turd has dropped on Paramount Plus and this one is called "Section 31." Originally designed as a stand-alone tv series starring Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, the project was hacked down to a 90 minute film that might be the single worst piece of Star Trek ever created. The movie succeeds in being constantly annoying, cliched, and thoroughly unfunny throughout its entire runtime and fails to even jump the shark into "so bad it's good" territory. Without Star Trek branding this film is barely recognizable as Star Trek, as it contains none of the values or vision created by Gene Roddenberry. Following the lead, Philippa Georgiou, who is stated to be from an alternate timeline she once ruled over as the Emperor of the Terran Empire, Georgiou struggles with moral dilemmas as she explores her newfound relationships whilst deciding whether to join Starfleet or not. As the movie continues, Georgiou uncovers a mysterious weapon, the Godsend, that she created long ago, threatening the stability of the universe as a whole. Georgiou's journey is presented with multiple complex alliances, enemies, and untrustworthy allies which all serve as obstacles that challenge the progress of her growth as a character and ally. The narrative of “Section 31” mixes themes of loyalty and sacrifice together, blurring the line between what is and isn't considered moral, challenging the viewers to consider how far they would go to protect those that they care about. The movie as a whole provides various insights on the complex emotions those who sacrifice the ones they love for power will face, showing how the past will always come back to haunt you eventually.

This episode’s teleplay was written by Alan McElroy, with the story by Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt & Alan McElroy, and it was directed by Omar Madha. Sorry about the lateness this episode is in getting to you. Unfortunately, I had to work over the weekend and later into the week, so my editing time was compromised. If you haven’t seen this episode of Star Trek: Discovery, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We’ll be here for you! Shocked! Shocked I say!!! Georgiou’s condition worsens and the Discovery computer sends them to a distant planet for a remote chance for a cure. What happens there may surprise you. May surprise you??? I was DUMBFOUNDED!!! For the first time in more than 200 episodes of podcasting, I could not rate this episode!!! It was SO out of left field for me. I did not expect them to go to the Mirror Universe, though, in retrospect, I should have. Opinions were many and spirited for this episode. After re-watching it more than once (I only got to watch it once this week prior to recording), I can tell you that I appreciated the episode a LOT more after the shock of it wore off, but you’ll hear me talk about that a lot this week. All in all, I knew it was (mostly) a great episode this week, but I had so many questions about it, I had to defer my rating. Ruthie also had a lot of questions, but she gave it a rating. Going to the Mirror Universe now seems like it’s a natural thing to do, given Georgiou’s condition, but we questioned its place in the season, and it taking away from the main plot. Next week, I’ll bring something up about how it seems like a back door pilot and only placed here because they decided to bring Michelle Yeoh and Georgiou into Season 3. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 3 Episode 6 – Scavengers We’re back!!! Ruthie and Brian talk through Star Trek: Discovery, Season 3 Episode 6, titled Scavengers. This episode’s teleplay was by Anne Cofell Saunders, and it was directed by Doug Aarniokoski. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! If you haven’t seen this episode of Star Trek: Discovery, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We’ll be here for you! NCC-1031-A? I don’t get it. They replaced almost every piece of the Enterprise NCC-1701, but it didn’t get the A. That was called a refit. This is called a retrofit. Why does it get the A? The All-in-One Communicator/Transporter/PADD/Tricorders… we don’t like them! Let me specifically say why I don’t like them. We can’t see enough detail in them to see how many pips there are, and the color changes are varied enough to be seen very well. Burnham and Saru… We both had issues with Burnham and Saru in this episode. It leaked into practically every section of this podcast. Specifically, we don’t like the direction they are taking her character. We also think that Saru could have stopped it from happening before it started! Messy Chapters this week… You will notice, if you’re the type of listener that uses our chapters, they’re a bit sloppy this week. Ruthie and I delved into Burnham and Saru’s actions in this episode during our Yeses, and they are clearly Nos. Rather than try to edit them to all be together with the rest of the Nos, it felt more authentic to leave them as they were. Ruthie couldn't join us again this week, so Brian and guest host LT from The Walking Dead Talk Through talk through S3E4 of Star Trek: Discovery, titled Forget Me Not. We enjoyed this expositional Trill episode combined with an old-fashioned dysfunctional Thanksgiving dinner. All in all, this was a very enjoyable episode.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 3 Episode 4 – Forget Me Not We’re back but not all of us. Unfortunately, Ruthie cannot join us again this week due to her power still being out at the time of recording, so Brian is joined by LT from NC for the second week in a row to talk through Star Trek: Discovery, Season 3 Episode 4, titled Forget Me Not. This episode was written by Alan McElroy & Chris Silvestri & Anthony Maranville and directed by Hanelle M. Culpepper, who directed the first three episodes of Star Trek: Picard. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! If you haven’t seen this episode of Star Trek: Discovery, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We’ll be here for you! Trill We arrive on the Trill homeworld and, unlike Earth, the world is welcome to Starfleet. What they weren’t so welcome to was a symbiont in a non-Trill host. We both enjoyed most of what we saw in this story, although it did have a few weak points. Thanksgiving Day Dinner, Starfleet Style! One of the more amusing parts of this story was the Saru dinner, a sort of Thanksgiving day festivity on the Discovery, followed by a holo-movie. Zora is alive! We finally see something from the second Short Trek, Calypso. Zora, the artificial intelligence we see interact with Craft in that Short Trek, emerges when the computer does not give Saru good recommendations. Limiting dairy and therapeutic coloring books aren’t going to do it for this crew! Spot the References… Again, there were a lot of references this week, more than last week. Star Trek Discovery Podcast, featuring Picard and Lower Decks

Brian, and Ruthie talk through Star Trek: Discovery S3E2, titled Far From Home. The USS Discovery has arrived in the 32nd Century, and not everything has gone well. They land on a very inhospitable world, nowhere near where they planned, and don't know when they are. This episode was another good one.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 3 Episode 2 – Far From Home We’re back! Brian and Ruthie talk through Star Trek: Discovery, Season 3 Episode 2, titled Far From Home. Like the premiere, this episode was written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! If you haven’t seen this episode of Star Trek: Discovery, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We’ll be here for you! Welcome… to the future!!! The USS Discovery has arrived in the 32nd Century, but it had a bumpy ride. It lands on an inhospitable planet, known only by its inhabitants as The Colony. Several people have their bells rung, Detmer especially. There wasn’t really any payoff to Detmer, but we might see something from this in future episodes. Hazmat clean-up on aisle 5!!! Jett Reno is back, and boy was she funny this episode! She had some of the best lines ever heard on this show. Bad guys This episode had a bit of a Western feel, with a barroom brawl and a villain. More to follow… Spot the References… Again, there were a lot of references this week, though not as many as last week. I used this Den of Geek article to help find them. Föderációs kolóniák felé veszi az irányt a naprendszereket elfogyasztó gépezet, miközben a felfoghatatlan pusztítás látványától megörülő Matt Decker átveszi az Enterprise irányítását, hogy a zabolátlan gépezet nyomába eredhessen. Míg a rettenetes tölcsér ámokfutása alatt Kirk és Scotty a leamortizált Constellation csillaghajón rekednek, Spock az elszabadult flottaparancsnokot próbálja kordában tartani. Aktuális adásunkban a ’A végítélet fegyvere’ című epizódról beszélgetünk. Rövid hírszekció: • Augusztus 19-én lett volna 98 éves Gene Roddenberry, Jonathan Frakes pedig ugyanezen a napon ünnepli a születésnapját. • Csaba belenézett az Another Life című scifi sorozatba, ami a Netflixen magyar szinkronnal érhető el. A kibeszélő tartalmából: • A gombnyomásra megsemmisülő világ helyett napjainkra a globális felmelegedésre helyeződött át a hangsúly: ’A végítélet fegyvere’ aktuális jelentőségét boncolgatjuk. • Will Decker Matt Decker fia Roddenberry Csillagösvény novellájában.

From Kirk to Archer, captains have always been the focus of Star Trek. But this is not true of Discovery. Captains have the responsibility to set the tone and efficiency of the ship so that the crew can complete its mission successfully. Because Michael Burnham is not a captain, these tasks happen on the edges of the story rather than at the center. Each captain we've seen during the first two seasons has had different interpersonal skills and their own approach to diplomacy and strategic planning. This makes comparing them am interesting task. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss nine leadership styles and explore how each captain seen on Star Trek: Discovery fits, paring them with a style of command. From the Philippa Georgiou to Gabriel Lorca to Christopher Pike, we reflect on memorable moments and discuss their lasting impact on Star Trek history. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 14: Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 For episode 40 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I continue our discussion of Season 2 Episode 14 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2. This episode was written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman, and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. So, for this episode, we are focussing on the parts of the episode that our listeners and we had problems with – and we highlight them in our Nos and Hold Your Horses sections. Because this is our second podcast covering this episode, we recommend you start our coverage of the season finale by listening to episode 39 if you haven’t already done so. In that episode, we go over feedback from the previous episode, but also ratings and Yeses. Because we had so much feedback for this episode, there will be a third episode to follow. Thanks go out to my co-host on Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Kyle, for doing most of the editing on this one! I finally got a bit of a break! Fred’s Pics! We go back to our previous format and use pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. And Fred’s pics do the talking for us! Because we have a supersized amount of pics for this episode, divided between this episode and episode 41 when it’s released. So, you’ll see more pics next time! These pictures cover the first half of the episode. What we thought about Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2… We both loved this episode, and it was probably one of the best ones of the series. That said, though we all (but one person) rated it highly, it does have flaws. Like the previous episode, this episode is greater than the sum of its parts. It is interesting, though, for an episode to score so high in ratings, yet have as many Nos and Hold Your Horses highlighted. By the way, a lot of people are really psyched about Discovery heading to the future but I’m not so sure. It feels like a bit of a copout, to be honest, done to appease some of the angry fanbase, some that will never be satisfied no matter what they do. I worry that setting it so far in the future may make all other series prequels to Discovery, the opposite problem they had before, hampering shows like the Picard show, the Section 31 show, and other shows coming down the road. I would have much preferred Discovery end up in the same era as the Picard show will be, so they could play in the same sandbox, so to speak. Maybe they will end up there? Who knows. More coverage of Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 next week! We’ll be back next week with even more coverage of the season finale, covering your feedback, our notes that haven’t been discussed yet, and news, adding in some additional news that’s happened since we recorded. While you can respond to this episode, we will not be covering any feedback received until episode 42 at the earliest. We let Fred’s pics do the talking for us! Before you look at pics from Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 1… We both loved this episode, and it was probably one of the best ones of the series. Star Trek: Discovery – Short Treks, Episode 3: The Brightest Star Ruthie and I are back with the third Short Trek! We recorded episodes for the first three Short Treks on Tuesday, December 18th in back to back to back fashion, and this is the final episode that we recorded that night. This Short Trek is titled The Brightest Star. It was written by executive story editors Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt, and directed by co-executive producer Douglas Aarniokoski. Finally, an origin story! This is the first Short Trek that I would consider an origin story. This one focuses on our favorite alien commander, Saru! Well, he’s at least the favorite alien for one of us. As such, Ruthie didn’t care for this episode as much as I did, as she’s not a big fan of his character and/or species, which she finds confusing. I understand that sentiment, as I was expecting more backstory on the prey aspects of his species, and his height, super speed, strength and especially his threat ganglia. I came up with a theory on how this evolved. His species was hunted, probably by the Ba’ul, but that Mirror Universe saying about scared Kelpiens make tough Kelpiens plays in here. The hunt made Kelpiens less tasty, so a system evolved to make them live in a more idyllic surrounding, and that they didn’t live with that fear their whole life. As I’ve said on the podcast many a time, I HATE the term “headcanon”, so I’d prefer to consider this speculation and not anything that can be used as “gatekeeper” material. Speaking of an origin story, are we to believe that the reason why Saru’s species are called Kelpiens because they eat and/or harvest kelp? Really? That’s a little on the nose, don’t you think? Why did she take a shuttlecraft? I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that Lieutenant Georgiou was the one that rescued Saru from Kaminar, and that totally fits the Saru/Georgiou/Burnham dynamic, and why he was so hurt that he didn’t get to serve as the first officer under her. The appearance of Michelle Yeoh was very unexpected in any of these Short Treks, so I was very happy to see her. However, with that in mind, I did not understand part of that aspect of the story. Was there a reason why she took a shuttlecraft down to pick up Saru and not beam down to get him? This seems like the Prime Directive is under effect here, as the Kelpiens are not a warp-capable species, and we see Siranna see the shuttle as it leaves the planet, so this didn’t make sense to me. Georgiou. One of the first moments of Star Trek: Discovery is the introduction of Captain Philippa Georgiou. We meet her during an away mission with Michael Burnham, and her wisdom is quickly evident. She asks Burnham to trust her as they seemingly meander through the desert. We soon discover that the route was not random; rather it created a landmark with which the Shenzhouto could locate them. Georgiou leaves us early, killed while attempting to capture the Klingon T'Kuvma, but this won't be the last we see of her. She turns up again in the Mirror Universe as Emperor Georgiou. Though ruthless and uncaring, the Emperor—like her Prime Universe counterpart—has a soft spot for Burnham. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Clara Cook of Primitive Cultureto discuss Philippa Georgiou. We discuss her command style in both the Prime and Mirror Universes, similarities in character, what role Mirror Georgiou may play in the Prime Universe … and what Section 31 may have to do with it. With three of our four regular panelists on deck — Chris Clow (Movies.com, Comics on Consoles), Rachael Clow (Biology PhD candidate), and Cicero Holmes (Spawn On Me Cast) — our crew goes in-depth with author Dayton Ward's explosive tie-in novel STAR TREK: DISCOVERY - DRASTIC MEASURES. Set a decade before the beginning of the DISCOVERY TV series, the new book explores one of the most consequential and horrific events in the 23rd century: the slaughter of 4,000 colonists on Tarsus IV. With the book fresh in our minds, we explore how it weaves together two major DISCOVERY characters — Philippa Georgiou and Gabriel Lorca — with established continuity going back to the STAR TREK: TOS episode "The Conscience of the King." Listen as our panel unpacks this and more on episode #20 of DISCOVERY DEBRIEF! Music by Bensound.com. Season Two Captains. In Star Trek: Discovery's first season, two captains were portrayed: Gabriel Lorca and Philippa Georgiou. In the finale, the Discovery crew are en route to Vulcan to pick up their new captain when they stops to answer a distress call, leaving fans with many questions. Who will be the new captain? Will it be a familiar face? Human or alien? When will we meet them, and who will portray them? In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Brandon-Shea Mutala are joined with Kyle Wagner of The Fandom Podcast Network to discuss “What if?” scenarios.
