In episodes 9 and 10 of Season two, there is a traitor onboard — and everyone thinks it’s Ash! But there is really no time to hunt that down. The DISCO is on the run, and so is Admiral Cornwell (because Section 31 has stopped responding to her hails, what the what?!) Spock has arrived and he has an axe to grind with his adopted sister, Michael. There’s a minefield (both emotional and literal) to navigate. and the traitor? it’s Airiam — but she tells Michael to find “Project Daedalus” before she gets ejected out of the airlock! WHAT IS PROJECT DAEDALUS? (spoiler: we’ll tell you!)

The Rise, Fall, and Rise of L'Rell. From humble beginnings as a follower of T'Kuvma, L'Rell comes to support Voq, the Torchbearer, with whom she develops a relationship that proves beneficial. But when Kol uses her to captain a ship in his fleet—only to find that she has conspired with Admiral Cornwell—the trust she has earned is lost. Then, with hope seemingly gone, a hydro bomb lands in her lap—compliments of the Federation. With the power to destroy Qo'nos now in her hands, L'Rell rises again, ascending to the role of Chancellor—or Mother—of the Klingon Empire. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss L'Rell's journey from follower to leader. What are her motivations? Do they change throughout the first two seasons? Was she really a believer of T'Kuvma's teaching? Is she searching for unlimited power over her people? Does she truly want to unite the Klingon houses as one family? Yeah, we have a lot of questions … and maybe a few answers. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 14: Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 For episode 40 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I continue our discussion of Season 2 Episode 14 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2. This episode was written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman, and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. So, for this episode, we are focussing on the parts of the episode that our listeners and we had problems with – and we highlight them in our Nos and Hold Your Horses sections. Because this is our second podcast covering this episode, we recommend you start our coverage of the season finale by listening to episode 39 if you haven’t already done so. In that episode, we go over feedback from the previous episode, but also ratings and Yeses. Because we had so much feedback for this episode, there will be a third episode to follow. Thanks go out to my co-host on Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Kyle, for doing most of the editing on this one! I finally got a bit of a break! Fred’s Pics! We go back to our previous format and use pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. And Fred’s pics do the talking for us! Because we have a supersized amount of pics for this episode, divided between this episode and episode 41 when it’s released. So, you’ll see more pics next time! These pictures cover the first half of the episode. What we thought about Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2… We both loved this episode, and it was probably one of the best ones of the series. That said, though we all (but one person) rated it highly, it does have flaws. Like the previous episode, this episode is greater than the sum of its parts. It is interesting, though, for an episode to score so high in ratings, yet have as many Nos and Hold Your Horses highlighted. By the way, a lot of people are really psyched about Discovery heading to the future but I’m not so sure. It feels like a bit of a copout, to be honest, done to appease some of the angry fanbase, some that will never be satisfied no matter what they do. I worry that setting it so far in the future may make all other series prequels to Discovery, the opposite problem they had before, hampering shows like the Picard show, the Section 31 show, and other shows coming down the road. I would have much preferred Discovery end up in the same era as the Picard show will be, so they could play in the same sandbox, so to speak. Maybe they will end up there? Who knows. More coverage of Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 next week! We’ll be back next week with even more coverage of the season finale, covering your feedback, our notes that haven’t been discussed yet, and news, adding in some additional news that’s happened since we recorded. While you can respond to this episode, we will not be covering any feedback received until episode 42 at the earliest. You can submit feedback via the Feedback page, Facebook Group, Twitter, you can email startrekdiscovery@talkthroughmedia.com, or call

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 10: The Red Angel For episode 35 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 10 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, The Red Angel. This episode was written by Chris Silvestri & Anthony Maranville, and it was directed by Hanelle M. Culpepper, who will be directing the first two episodes of the new Picard series. She directed S1E12 Vaulting Ambition previously. Discussion on The Red Angel begins at 19:40… We begin the podcast with feedback from the previous episode. We get into this episode at the 19 minutes 40 seconds mark. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We thought last week’s experiment was a big hit, so we’re going to do it again, and let Fred’s pics do the talking for us! Before you look at pics from The Red Angel… We both loved this episode, although maybe not quite as much as last week’s episode. We’ll be back next week with our next episode. As always, your feedback is essential to this podcast! We’ll be having a short feedback deadline most weeks this season, due to scheduling issues. We’ll cover more feedback from S2E10 The Red Angel, so do not hesitate to send in your feedback if you miss the deadline. SPOILER ALERT The crew of the USS Discovery believe they know the identity of the mysterious Red Angel, and conjure up a plan to capture it - but the cost of that capture may be the life of a beloved crew member. Plus, Hugh Culber is still trying to come to terms with his new life, and looks to Admiral Cornwell to help him try and figure out how to cope with what has happened to him. =/= Music for Discovering Trek is provided by Five Year Mission. Project Daedalus. As the USS Discovery attempts to infiltrate the defenses protecting Section 31's home base, home to the group's threat assessment system known as Control, Commander Airiam endandgers the search for the Red Angel as she struggle to maintain her own identify after being compromised by a program from the future. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss the importance of Airiam's backstory, Admiral Cornwell, and the cause of Spock's extreme behavior. Plus, we debate Airiam's death, possible paths to the transformation of Discovery's computer into Zora, and the role of Spock's relation with Michael in his efforts to reconcile logic and the end of all sentient life in the galaxy. Even though Discovery went rogue just last week, "Project Daedalus" has them teaming up with a Starfleet admiral to cause a ruckus. This time they're heading over to that troublesome Section 31 to depose the Logic Extremist at the top. As happens from time to time in the Star Trek universe, things don't turn out to be exactly as they seem. Directed by Star Trek veteran Jonathan Frakes, and written by newcomer to the franchise Michelle Paradise. She's written a bunch of episodes of CW's "The Originals" so don't go thinking she's a rookie. This episode also has Jayne Brooke returning as Admiral Cornwell, and Hannah Cheesman in what seems to be a pretty momentous episode for Airiam.
Suspect: Section 31. Admiral Cornwell boards Discovery to lead an assault on Starfleet’s super-secret rogue branch, but everything is not as it seems. A background member of the crew steps forward in this highly-emotional episode. Matt and Pete hang with episode 209, “Project Daedalus.”We covered the latest casting news on the Picard series. Thanks as always to everyone who supports the podcast by visiting Patreon.com/PhantasticGeek.Share your feedback for Star Trek: Discovery by emailing PhantasticGeek@gmail.com, commenting at PhantasticGeek.com, or tweeting @PhantasticGeek.MP3iTunes

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 5: Saints of Imperfection For episode 30 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie is back and we discuss Season 2 Episode 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Saints of Imperfection. It was written by executive story editor Kirsten Beyer, who is said to be one of the creators of the new Picard series, and directed by David Barrett. He previously directed S1E7 Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. Discussion on Saints of Imperfection begins at 18:12… We begin the podcast with feedback from previous episodes, and Ruthie’s take on last week’s episode, since she was out sick. Then, we finally get into this wonderful episode a little over 18 minutes in. A very cool looking episode! From the Section 31 tech to the partial spore jump, to the beauty of the mycelial network, this episode was beautiful. This show just keeps outdoing itself visually! STDP 030 – Discovery’s Partial Jump STDP 030 – Bridge In The Network Another Tough One for Tilly… Taken to the mycelial network to kill a monster, Tilly has yet another tough episode, but one that she comes through in the end with support from her friends. This may be the end of that connection with May, but I have a feeling that those two will meet again. One thing I said during recording was that I didn’t feel that the emotional connection between Tilly and May didn’t seem earned, but I have rethought that stance. I can see it now. STDP 030 – Discovery In The Mycelial Network The Return of Culber! One of the worst kept secrets in Star Trek history, Culber has returned, although it is a new Culber, reconstituted in the mycelial network. How much of the old Culber is in this new Culber is hard to know, but if you think this is far fetched, remember Star Trek III: The Search for Spock! Is this anymore far fetched than if it was his katra? STDP 030 – Culber In The Network Georgiou and Section 31! We got another long glimpse at what the Section 31 series may be like in this episode. With Georgiou, Tyler, newcomer Leland and (possibly) Admiral Cornwell, who showed up near the end of the episode, we could definitely see those characters in that show. To me, it’s looking more and more interesting. Sparks fly when the Discovery captures Spock’s shuttlecraft, only to find that Georgiou is piloting it. We think Pike may put two and two together about Georgiou if he knows where Lorca came from. There were some interesting scenes between Georgiou and Burnham and more interesting actions by the former Mirror Emperor that will keep us guessing. What are her true intentions? We’ll have to keep watching to find out! STDP 030 – Georgiou Hands Up

If Discovery was aiming for a bit of calm before the big finale storm, this episode sure was low on the tranquility scale! But was that for the better or worse? This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton, along with special guest Dale Deruiter of the Outrage Factory podcast, dive into the character-heavy penultimate chapter in the show's inaugural season, the ominously titled The War Without, The War Within. Practically bursting with major dramatic moments involving Burnham, Tyler, Stamets, Sarek, Mirror Georgiou, Admiral Cornwell and L'Rell, the episode offers plenty of fodder for the trio to obsessively mull over. Will there be a place for our tortured former security chief in season 2? What is fallen Emperor Georgiou's dubious game plan? And does anyone really care that Lorca is gone?! All these lingering questions, and many others, fuel this mighty energetic hour of Star Trek discussion. Plus, as an added bonus, Cam reviews the second issue of IDW's "The Light of Kahless" comic-book arc, and Tyler & Dale offer their thoughts on the new sci-fi Netflix series Altered Carbon. Finally, Poey and Mikey don't have to beat around the Sarek bush anymore! This week we're talking Star Trek: Discovery's sixth episode, "Lethe". Liam, Matt, Paul and special guest, Chortle Award nominated Stand Up Comedian, Sean McLoughlin, attempt to find their way out of the mirror universe in Part Two of our epic two part look back over the first season of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ as we analyse the back six episodes of the series. Liam reads a ridiculous fanboy rant that complains about everything from “feminist lunacy” to “feminist Idiocy” for ruining the show, Paul reckons Qo'noS looks more like Camden Market then the Klingon homeworld, Matt ponders the thought process behind naming a torture device an 'Agonizor' while Sean falls a little bit in love with Admiral Cornwell. Multiple sword fights, shocking twists, Jason Isaacs owning twitter trolls, and much more as we find out whether the USS Discovery sticks its landing. Captain Lorca. We first meet Captain Gabriel Lorca in “Context Is for Kings,” the third episode of Star Trek: Discovery, and quickly learn that his command and leadership style is vastly different from that of any captain we've seen before. He is flippant, abrasive, and obsessed with winning the war against the Klingons. And, as we later learn, he has ulterior motives. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin are joined by Ken Tripp of Standard Orbit to discuss the intricacies of Lorca's command style and his varied interactions with his crew. We discuss his autocratic approach to leadership and how the crew responds. We also examine the appropriateness of his relationships with Admiral Cornwell and Michael Burnham, and consider how our view of this complex character changed after learning that he is from the Mirror Universe. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1, Episode 15: Will You Take My Hand? There was a lot to say about Star Trek: Discovery S1E15, which is titled Will You Take My Hand? It was a season finale, after all, right? In fact, like last week, it took extra time to get this episode to you as a result. More about Season 1, Episode 14: The War Without, The War Within Before we get going and talk about the season finale, we got more feedback about last week’s episode and some pre-finale speculation. We share that feedback about the penultimate episode! Fred’s pics… Part 5! Fred from The Netherlands shared more pics again this week, showing us more wonderful use of lighting in the season finale! I have used one of those pics as the featured image for this episode, and a couple more below. If you want to see them all, you can see Fred’s image collection from the episode here. You’re no Captain Georgiou, Emperor!!! It seems that not all Starfleet captains from the Mirror Universe are good at hiding in plain sight! During his time in the Prime Universe, Lorca was able to pass himself as a Federation captain, albeit with some unconventional tendencies. Emperor Georgiou, on the other hand, doesn’t even TRY to hide her true self, despite Admiral Cornwell installing her as the long thought dead Captain Georgiou. The way she conducted herself on the Bridge was quite shocking, but also right in character. I was a bit surprised that she survived the episode, but when I think of the possibility of her as this crew’s longtime antagonist, like a Q, Gul Dukat or even Daniels, it makes me giddy! I still wonder if she will end up an agent of Section 31, or running the whole thing. Maybe she’ll try to start a new empire? Who knows, but I look forward to seeing her again! NCC-17… Yup, that’s right!!! At the end of this episode, Discovery answers a distress call from… you guessed it… the USS Enterprise NCC-1701!!! Now, in this era, sometime around the Kirk is not the Captain of the Enterprise yet. Instead, his predecessor, Captain Christopher Pike, is the Captain. However, Sarek’s son and Burnham’s adopted brother, Spock, does serve on this era’s Enterprise. We can only hope we’ll see this Enterprise in Season 2. Will Zachary Quinto reprise his role, or will they cast someone else as another version of Spock? And will it be Bruce Greenwood, who plays Pike in the 2009 and 2013 reboot films, reprising the role, or will it be someone new? What about the enigmatic Number One, who was played by the late Majel Barrett in The Cage (the original TOS pilot)? Some called the appearance of the Enterprise as fan service, and Ruthie is a little trepidatious on how this might affect canon next season. I say bring it on!

As the newly appointed Captain of the Discovery, Mirror Georgiou is sent on a mission by the remaining Starfleet leadership to end the Federation-Klingon war, once and for all. She uses Stamets to jump the ship inside one of the vast caves of Qo'noS, the Klingon homeworld. Once there, Mirror Georgiou assembles an away team - consisting of Michael Burnham, Ash Tyler, and Cadet Tilly - to join her to supposedly plant a drone that would map critical military targets for the Federation. Burnham suspects there is more to this mission than the mapping exercise and her suspicions are confirmed when Tilly learns Georgiou actually aims to embed and detonate a powerful bomb that will destroy Qo'noS, effectively crippling the Vulcan empire and saving the Federation from annihilation. Outraged that Federation leaders have sanctioned this action, Burnham effectively argues to Admiral Cornwell that the Federation cannot jettison its own moral principles to win the war, even in the face of eradication by the enemy. After other crewmembers demonstrate their support for Michael’s line of reasoning, the Admiral acquiesces and accepts a different option. Michael retrieves the mega bomb’s detonator from Georgiou and gives it to L’Rell. Burnham and Tyler convince the Klingon that with such a device as leverage, she would be able to convince the feuding houses to unite as one following the teachings of T’Kuvma. The episode ends with the awarding of Starfleet’s medal of honor to Discovery officers and the knowledge Burnham has been pardoned and reinstated as a Starfleet Commander.
So we reach the end! We say a Vulcan Goodbye to this first season of “Star Trek: Discovery” with a look at a shocking final scene, a rushed ending, a surprising conversion by Admiral Cornwell, some abrupt goodbyes, and Tilly’s “just say no” moment. Host Scott McNulty with Joe Rosensteel and Jason Snell.
Starbases and the USS Saratoga. As Discovery's first season winds down and the war against the Klingons reaches its climax, Admiral Cornwell is all about the numbers. There's a twenty here, a twelve there, a nineteen and a one. What does it all mean, and have these numerical locales played a role in past Star Trek? In this episode of Notes from The Edge, in which we deep-dive into connections between Star Trek: Discovery and the broader Star Trek universe, host C Bryan Jones shares his thoughts on key character moments, the status of the way, and the magical spore plan. We also explore appearances in past Star Trek by the USS Saratoga, Starbase Twelve (there are more than you think) and Starbase One (not so much). Jack's Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast
Geoff Clarke, Jack’s cohost on The ApeCast, comes back for another spectacular episode of Jack’s Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast, and they have a lot to talk about this week! Has Discovery righted the ship after last week’s questionable outing? The answer is… kind of? It’s more complex than that, and Jack and Geoff have FEELINGS, both good and bad on a lot of the crazy stuff that happens in this ep! Along the way, they stop to talk about ideal beards, Admiral Cornwell and what the hell she, or anyone else in this episode is thinking, shooting fortune cookies, just what in the heck the Klingons did to Voq/Tyler, a good Tilly moment and a bad Tilly moment, what, if anything, Discovery is trying to say, and AGRI-TRANSPORT BOOSTERS. It’s a gormagander of a time to get you all pumped up for that finale tonight!

The War Without, The War Within. As the crew returns to their own universe, Burnham must come to terms with what is left of Tyler-and she seems to be having more difficulty than the rest of the crew. Meanwhile, Stamets concocts a plan to replenish Discovery's spore supply and Admiral Cornwell changes the command structure of the ship as part of a new strategy to win the war against the Klingons. In this episode of The Edge, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by sociology professors and Star Trek experts John and Maria Jose Tenuto to discuss the fourteenth episode of Star Trek: Discovery, “The War Without, The War Within.” We also discuss Project Genesis, forced mind-melds, and astronomical units. Jared, Brian, and Kayla come together once again this week to discuss the penultimate episode in Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season, which kind of felt like a long setup for next week’s finale. Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, Episode 14 – Debuted Sunday February 4th, 2018 Written by Lisa Randolph Directed by David Solomon None of your hosts were particularly enthralled with the latest installment of Discovery. Lots of loose ends were left hanging or cut awkwardly short in an episode that felt like filler leading up to next week’s big finish. Can the show wrap everything up next week? The pseudo-resolution to the Tyler/Voq/Burnham storyline was welcome in principal (we haven’t heard from our dear friend Voqler in a couple of weeks now), but the soap-opera overtones of Tyler and Burnham’s heartfelt reconciliation left something to be desired. Discovery seems like it wants to struggle with the ethical issues surrounding Voqler (who, as Voq, killed a man) but instead seems to sweep them aside in favor of everyone just being glad to see their old pal Ash (who, again, killed a man as Voq) in an awkward mess hall scene led by Tilly. In this storyline, Stamets seems to be the only one acting rationally, and Anthony Rapp lays on a great bit of emotional acting in the confrontation between his character and the now de-Voqed Tyler. It was great to see Admiral Cornwell back again. The scenes in the briefing room (so Star Trek!) and between Cornwell and L’Rell were particularly fun. But, just like the other threads of this episode, we’re left feeling like the characters in the story have lost their minds. A Vulcan and human admiral conspire with a treacherous genocidal maniac to win a war against the Klingons? And they do so by parading said maniac around as a fallen war hero, which was a mentor to many of the people now serving on the Discovery? The writers may have kept some of the pieces from us, but it’s hard to imagine a world in which this makes much sense or leads to a satisfying conclusion. All-in-all, your Shuttle Pod crew was left confused and dismayed. But, of course, the show has one more chance to pull this all together. What could possibly await us this coming Sunday?

The Discovery, back in the Prime Universe, finds itself at war with the Klingons and with a veritable rogues gallery aboard: Voq, L’rell, and Emperor Georgiou. A broken Admiral Cornwell makes some terrible decisions, while nobody gives a crap about the feelings of Burnham, recently out of an abusive relationship. Why is everyone such a …

Bittersweet Announcement We begin the episode with an important announcement about this podcast. Unfortunately, Adam has decided to step down as co-host of the podcast. This is his last episode for the immediate future, due to other commitments that make it difficult to do this podcast. It’s sad to see Adam go. He’s been a big reason for the podcast’s success, and this podcast wouldn’t be where it is without him. However, I am pleased to announce that the new co-host is Ruthie!!! I think you will find that the quality of this show will not skip a beat, and since this podcast’s format is based upon the format of The Walking Dead Talk Through, we probably won’t be changing things much. Into the Forest I Go. In a last-ditch effort to penetrate the Klingon cloaking technology, the crew of the USS Discovery develop a plan that puts the lives of Lieutenant Tyler and Specialist Burnham in danger. Once aboard the Ship of the Dead, the pair make an unexpected discovery: Admiral Cornwell is alive and being held prisoner by General Kol. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Stamets is put through an incredible test of endurance as the spore drive transforms Discovery into a 3D camera. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala and Amy Nelson are joined by Sarah Buck to discuss the ninth episode of Star Trek: Discovery, “Into the Forest I Go.” And in our news segment, Mike Schindler and Max Hegel discuss the January return and compare the mid-season cliffhanger to those of past Star Trek. Into the Forest I Go – Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1 Episode 9 Into the Forest I Go! The fall finale is here! On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 9, titled Into the Forest I Go. We see the Discovery fight the Klingon Ship of the Dead and General Kol, and Burnham redeems herself a great deal from the mutiny in the series premiere. She defeats Kol, rescues Admiral Cornwell, and is instrumental in saving Pahvo from certain destruction. We also see 133 spore drive micro jumps! Don’t you think that the spore drive is cool? However, it is clear that too much of a good thing can get you killed! So what did we think of this episode? I thought this was the best episode of Star Trek: Discovery so far, definitely better than the last episode! Adam did not like it as much as I did, but still found it to be a solid episode. Picking up from the previous episode, the Klingon Kol is in route to the planet Pahvo intent on killing anyone he finds. Admiral Terral orders the Discovery to retreat to the nearest star base. Captain Lorca seems to comply with the order while attempting to figure out another way to identify the cloaked ship. The crew of the Discovery devises a plan to place two sensors on the Sarcophagus that will allow them to map the cloaking grid. Tyler and Burnham serve as the away team to set the sensors at the helm and stern of the Sarcophagus. Using the spore drive, Stamets must initiate 133 jumps in rapid succession to allow the data collection necessary for this task. The mission is successful: The Pahvans are saved; Admiral Cornwell rescued; L’Rell taken prisoner; and the Sarcophagus destroyed. Collected data provides the Federation the information needed for them to detect cloaked shops and turn the tide of the war with the Klingon. Lorca learns he will be awarded the Legion of Honor. With a few notable exceptions, all seems well with the crew when Stamets agrees to initiate one last jump to get Discovery safely to a starport. However, the jump goes terribly wrong and the crew finds they are unable to identify where they have landed. Lorca sets his crew to plan on a way to defend the crystal transmitter. Their plan to see through the Ship of the Dead's cloak involves Stamets carrying out 133 Spore jumps in rapid succession, something Culber isn't too keen on. Burnham and Tyler beam aboard the Ship of the Dead and manage to rescue Admiral Cornwell and give Kol a few good his to the face. Unfortunately for Tyler, L'Rell, manages to beam back to Discovery with them. Disco Night is a Star Trek Discovery Podcast, release every Monday.

When the crew of the USS Discovery face off against the Klingons and their new invisibility screen, they begin to realize that the spore drive may not be the ultimate weapon they think. Star Trek: Discovery – S1E8 – Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 8, titled Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum. Saru knows fear! This episode does a deeper (but in my opinion, not deep enough) dive into Saru and his species. For a prey species, Kelpiens are faster, stronger, have better senses and taller than humans. He can crush communicators with his bare hands. Can you imagine what the apex predator species that considers the Kelpiens prey? For the first time in his life, Saru felt no fear on the planet. His actions, however, showed questionable judgment. His actions on the planet were nothing short of mutiny, though I doubt he will be reprimanded for it. What does Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum mean? According to the Wikipedia article, Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum means “If you want peace, prepare for war”. So what did we think of Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum? It was very much a split vote for this episode. Adam thought it was the best episode so far, but I had the opposite reaction. I would probably rank this one as my least favorite so far. I had a hard time figuring out why I had that impression, but I finally identified one key issue: The episode length. It started with a bang but, in my opinion, it tailed off from there. Mind you, it seemed well written, well-acted, well-directed and the effects (with the exception of the naturally occurring transmitter) excellent. The problem that I see is that there was enough potential story there to fit into two episodes, but the episode was not only edited down to a single episode, but this was the shortest episode so far. It seemed like a lot of the story on the planet had been edited out, as did the story on the Klingon sarcophagus ship. It’s possible that some of the Klingon plot could have been moved to next week’s mid-season finale, and it’ll fit well once that’s been released, but the episode could have benefited from more time to expand the story. Is Cornwell still alive? That’s one thing that wasn’t clear but we both think that she did not die. We should be seeing her again next episode. If you want peace, prepare for this week’s Shuttle Pod podcast. Matt, Jared, and Kayla assemble a landing party to discuss the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery. Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, Episode 8 – Debuted Sunday November 5th Written by Kirsten Beyer Directed by John S. Scott Join us as the Shuttle Pod crew dive into episode 8 of Discovery. Writer Kirsten Beyer’s first foray into writing for television was definitely a success. She was able to bring together a nice story, where we learn more about Saru and get to follow some of the other narrative threads as they weave through the central plot. There were a couple of nice Trek moments in this week’s installment. Our resident audiophile Matt immediately picked up on a familiar sound effect from “The Cage” (listen to the podcast to hear the effects compared). We also got a shout out to the first man in space, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. As Matt points out, it’s about time he had his own ship! The Klingon stuff this week felt a bit more exciting. Perhaps because scenes between Mary Chieffo’s L’Rell and Jayne Brook’s Admiral Cornwell were nothing short of fantastic television. Kayla says Cornwell might be her new favorite character, which makes her death(?) an interesting talking point. As always, we are left with lots of questions in this episode that felt very much like part one of a classic two-parter. What’s the deal with the Pahvoans? Will there be repercussions for Saru, who revealed he was in his right mind during his breakdown on the plant? Is Admiral Cornwell dead, or… not? What is L’Rell really angling for? And, of course, what will happen between Discovery and the Klingons!? Listen to the podcast to hear our thoughts.
Burnham, Tyler, and Saru are sent on a sensitive mission with implication for the entire Federation war effort. Meanwhile, Admiral Cornwell is still in the clutches of the Klingons...Ed. note --- She better not be dead. I will be very angry at you, Discovery.
In episode eight of Star Trek: Discovery, "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum," Saru goes fear-free for the first time - on a planet of sentient blue lint. Plus, Admiral Cornwell and the Klingons!
On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 6, titled Lethe. This episode was a bit of a departure from the long story arc we have seen so far from this series.

Star Trek: Discovery – S1E6 – Lethe On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 6, titled Lethe. This episode was a bit of a departure from the long story arc we have seen so far from this series. Although some of what happened in this episode will continue on through this season, it felt very self-contained, almost episodic. Sarek and Burnham We learn a lot more in this episode about the complicated relationship Burnham has with Sarek. Burnham’s application to join the Vulcan Expeditionary Group was rejected, not on its own merit, but because Sarek was forced to choose between Burnham and Spock. Only one would be able to go. Sarek chose Spock, but Spock decided to join Starfleet instead. He never revealed that to Burnham and reflected upon this with regret as he lay dying on his ship. What’s Lethe? A false rejection? A troubled captain? According to Wikipedia, Lethe means “oblivion”, “forgetfulness”, or “concealment” in Classical Greek. The episode title suggests concealment, as Sarek concealed the truth about why Burnham’s application was rejected. It also fits Lorca concealing his true psychological condition to Starfleet. Cornwell discovers his PTSD, but before she can do anything about it, she is abducted by the Klingons. Unlike his unsanctioned rescue of Sarek, Lorca decides to play it by the books and wait for instructions, probably to hold onto his command. Groovy mind melds, spore trips, and funky nebulas! One thing this show was… it was trippy!!! The mind-meld was trippy. The nebula itself was very colorful and trippy. The Formerly uptight, Stamets is now the mellow Chief Engineer as a result of his spore drive encounters. Very trippy, indeed! We thought that this episode was not as good as previous episodes, especially last week. I thought it was still decent, while Adam didn’t care for it, and thought it was his least favorite so far. Nevertheless, we can’t wait for next week! Want to participate? Join our Facebook group! And follow us on Twitter!

Episode five, “Choose Your Pain” starts out brutally...with a bludgeoning message of interspecies morality that Zach almost cannot stand. It’s David’s turn this week to mess up not just one, but three names (apologies to Admiral Cornwell, Michelle Forbes, and Michelle Pfeiffer). In the midst of an episode chock full of wonderful character moments and development, David and Zach uncover what looks to be an instance of Klingon subterfuge… or bad writing. Fingers crossed for the former!
