ROSIE's BIO Rosie Varela is a 54-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist for EEP, an eclectic shoegaze band in El Paso, Texas. She began writing songs in the late 1990s, but did not record any of them until 2019, when she and her bandmates formed EEP. The band has released two critically acclaimed albums - “Death of a Very Good Machine” (2020) and “Winter Skin” (2021). Rosie created The Rosie Varela Project, an Avant-Pop/Indie Rock band for songs that bend genre and may not always fit into EEP's shoegaze style. The solo project will release its debut album “What Remains,” co-produced by Rosie Varela and Ross Ingram, on June 3, 2022. Rosie is a co-owner with her husband, Justin Oser, and her collaborator and bandmate, Ross Ingram, of Brainville, a recording studio in Sunland Park, New Mexico, and Hogar Records, an independent music label in El Paso, Texas. The label's plans for 2022 include releasing The Rosie Varela Project's debut album, Ross Ingram's second solo album, and EEP's third album. Romulans and Star Trek (2009). Star Trek (2009) featured a prominent role for a revenge-seeking 24th-century Romulan captain named Nero and his unusual ship, the Nerada. Nero's time travel to the 23rd century created an alternate timeline and left fans wondering what led to the Romulan supernova of 2387—and what happened after. Finally, the first season of Star Trek: Picard, along with the Picard: Countdown comics and Una McCormack's novel The Last Best Hope, have provided some answers. Ocean’s 11 (1960) and “Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang.” Long before George Clooney assembled his star-studded gang of high-rolling thieves, the original Danny Ocean—Frank Sinatra—successfully knocked off five casinos in a single night in the original 1960 Ocean’s 11. With help from Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and the rest of the Rat Pack, Sinatra brought his own brand of cool to the caper genre in a film that, arguably, proved more iconic than creatively successful. Three decades later, when the producers of Deep Space Nine began plotting their own casino heist in “Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang,” it was to Sinatra’s job that they turned for inspiration, even renting particular period-specific costumes because they matched those featured in the movie. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Justin Oser to look at the links between Ocean’s 11 and “Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang,” two stories in which a crack team of decorated war veterans must pull off the most audacious mission of their careers. Earl Grey: A Star Trek The Next Generation Podcast

Wesley's Starfleet.   Ever since we met Wesley Crusher, he has always wanted to join Starfleet and become an officer. What is it about Starfleet that has Wesley so enamored? With the number of tests to enter the academy and the peer pressure of doing well, does this discourage Wesley to leave Starfleet before graduating? In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser, Joe Keegan, and Amy Nelson are joined with Kevin Scharf to discuss the testing procedures and courses taken at Starfleet Academy. The mere entrance exams of written, oral, and psych tests are enough to sway the faint of heart but Welsey endures only to drop out before his graduation. Nepenthe. The last time that we saw Will Riker and Deanna Troi together with Jean-Luc Picard was in Star Trek: Nemesis, when a newly married Captain Riker and Commander Troi were about to embark on adventures aboard the USS Titan. Twenty years later, the couple—now retired—returns in the series Star Trek: Picard for a heartfelt reunion with their beloved captain. Lending a helping hand, they provide Picard and Soji much-needed refuge at their peaceful home on the beautiful planet Nepenthe as they try to digest the dramatic events that have turned lives upside down. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the seventh episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Nepenthe.” We explore the much-anticipated meeting of TNG favorites, Will and Deanna's charming daughter Kestra and her friendship with Soji, and the dangerous turn of events for Elnor and Hugh back on the Artifact. We also discuss the worlds and languages invented by Thaddeus Troi-Riker, what may be happening with Rios, Jurati, and Raffi, and the disturbing images we see in a mind-meld between Commodore Oh and Jurati. Midseason Supplemental. The first season of Star Trek: Picard has passed the halfway mark, and each episode has led to a lot of discussion. The fifth, “Stardust City Rag,” was particularly controversial, and we wanted to take this opportunity to dive deeper into some of the debates it has generated. In this supplemental episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi debate whether Seven of Nine's actions were justified, ask if the Una McCormack's tie-in novel The Last Best Hope is essential for watching Star Trek: Picard, and explore the differences in the portrayal of sex and violence. The Impossible Box. “I Borg”—the acclaimed episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation that aired in May 1992—introduced Hugh, the first individual we see who has been liberated from the Borg Collective. After two more appearances in the series, Hugh has returned almost three decades later in Star Trek: Picard as the executive director of the Borg Reclamation Project. In “The Impossible Box,” Picard and Hugh have an emotional reunion amid the major storylines of Picard's quest to find Soji—all while the intrigue aboard the Artifact finally leads to dramatic results. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the sixth episode of Star Trek: Picard, “The Impossible Box.” We explore the long-awaited meeting of Picard and Hugh, the deep friendship between Raffi and Rios, and the sudden turn in Soji and Narek's interaction. Stardust City Rag. Star Trek has rarely shown us the fringes of the galaxy without at least some of the perspective coming from Starfleet characters. In Star Trek: Picard, we're seeing 24-century life in more parts of the galaxy that are far from the oversight of the Federation, and where few interactions with Starfleet officers occur. In “Stardust City Rag,” the crew of La Sirena go on a mission to find cyberneticist Bruce Maddox. They trace him to a city where it seems almost anything goes and any sort of official law is a distant memory. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the fifth episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Stardust City Rag.” We explore the controversial opening scene as well as the important roles of Bruce Maddox and Seven of Nine. Absolute Candor. Star Trek: Picard has shown us a wider variety of Romulans than previous series. We've seen Romulans inspired by The Original Series, The Next Generation era, and Star Trek (2009). We've also been introduced to previously unknown aspects of Romulan society, such as the secretive Zhat Vash. In “Absolute Candor,” another fascinating part of Romulan society comes to light: the Qowat Milat, a sect of women warrior nuns who have pledged to tell the truth at all times. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the fourth episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Absolute Candor.” We explore the introduction of Elnor, a Romulan who has been cared for and trained by the Qowat Milat on the planet Vashti. We discuss the refugees living there and how their relationship with Picard has deteriorated over the past 14 years. And we talk about life aboard the La Sirena, the battle with an Original Series-era Romulan Bird-of-Prey, the evolution of the Narek–Soji story, and the much-anticipated return of Seven of Nine. We also share our predictions for upcoming episodes. The End Is the Beginning. Starfleet officers have been an essential part of every incarnation of Star Trek—until Star Trek: Picard. Instead of captains, commanders, lieutenants, and ensigns, Picard brings us ex-Starfleet officers, Romulans, and androids to construct a narrative more focused on life outside Starfleet. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the third episode of Star Trek: Picard, “The End Is the Beginning.” We explore the complex interaction between Picard and his former first officer, Raffi Musiker, as well as the latest developments on the Artifact, the mysterious Romulan-controlled Borg cube. We also talk about the return of Hugh, the introduction of charming rogue Cristóbal Rios, and Picard's crew of former Starfleet officers who come together on Rios's ship. Maps and Legends. Romulans first appeared just eight episodes into Star Trek's existence. That story, “Balance of Terror,” aired on December 15, 1966, and delivered an Original Series statement on racism and honor. It also established one of the Federation's oldest enemies. More than 22 years later, on May 8, 1989, another enemy—the Borg—made its first appearance in the second-season Next Generation episode “Q Who.” Now, some 31 years after that, the two have come together to form the central plot of Star Trek: Picard. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the second episode of Star Trek: Picard “Maps and Legends,” as we explore Romulan culture and the Artifact—a derelict Borg cube that has been severed from the Collective and turned into a Romulan reclamation facility. We also talk about the attack on Mars, Picard's tense meeting with Admiral Clancy, the relationship between Narek and Soji, just what Commodore Oh is up to, and our predictions for upcoming episodes. Children of Mars. Throughout its long and storied history, Star Trek has tended to focus on the lives and adventures of Starfleet officers. Civilians have rarely been seen. Star Trek: Picard is set to change that with the return of The Next Generation's famous captain, now retired from Starfleet. Jean-Luc will once again play an important role in the late 24th century, but this time as a civilian. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss “Children of Mars,” the sixth episode of the second season of Star Trek: Short Treks. We discuss how this story serves as a lead-in to Star Trek: Picard, the very important role that music plays in this short, the difficult topic of bullying, Kima and Lil's journey from conflict to understanding, who the rogue synths may be, and our predictions for what we will see in the first episode the highly anticipated series. Pit bulls, with Sara Ondrako. Star Trek, and the people associated with it, have often advocated for political and social causes. Sir Patrick Stewart is no exception. He has championed LGBTQ equality, women's rights, and a number of anti-domestic violence campaigns. In recent years, he has also turned his attention to fostering dogs—particularly pit bulls. This inspired the writers of Star Trek: Picard to include a pit bull named Number One in the show. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi welcome Sara Ondrako, founder and CEO of the American Pit Bull Foundation (APBF). We discuss common misconceptions about pit bulls, what the inclusion of a pit bull in Star Trek: Picard may mean for public perception of the breed, and the APBF's education, advocacy, and outreach programs. Logan and Picard. Star Trek—and its actors—don't exist in a vacuum; the cinematic and television styles of the time are reflected in its storytelling. Star Trek: Discovery has been darker than most previous series, and it sounds like Star Trek: Picard will have its difficult moments as well. In 2017, James Mangold's film Logan, set in the world of the X-Men, changed expectations of what a comic book movie could be. It also gave audiences a conclusion to the story of Patrick Stewart's Professor X. Will Picard follow in Logan's footsteps? In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi chat with Mike Schindler about Logan. Did the prospect of a satisfying conclusion to the story influence Patrick Stewart as he considered whether to step back into Picard's shoes? Will Star Trek: Picard receive a mature rating like Discovery and Logan? And, perhaps most importantly, should we expect an end to Picard at the end of Picard? Picard and the Romulans. At the beginning of The Next Generation, the Federation and the Romulans had barely had any contact for more than 50 years. When attacks on their outposts lead the two sides to end their silence in “The Neutral Zone,” it's Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise-D that encounter the Romulans first. From that point forward, Picard was an important figure in relations between these powers, and it appears he will continue in that role in Star Trek: Picard. In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser talk about the various interactions between Picard and the Romulans. From their reintroduction in “The Neutral Zone” to the collapse of their government in Nemesis, the Romulans tend to meet the Federation with guile while Picard does his best to keep their machinations from spilling into open warfare. Picard as a Family Man. When we were first met Jean-Luc Picard in “Encounter at Farpoint,” we were told—in no uncertain terms—that he does not like children. But, over the course of the series and Picard's life, things changed. The Picard we saw in Generations seemed to long for a family and the comforts of a 19th-century Christmas at the vineyard. In this episode of The Line, Brandon-Shea Mutala sets out to convince his fellow co-hosts, Justin Oser and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, that Picard really is a family man—though it doesn't take a great deal of convincing. As we continue our look back on the themes in Picard's life, we consider that he really does want a family and children, but circumstances have stood in the way.
