This week Nick talks to Parmy Olson. Parmy Olson is a prominent technology journalist and author, currently a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion. She previously covered tech and innovation for The Wall Street Journal and Forbes, with a focus on AI, robotics, and emerging technologies. In 2012, she published We Are Anonymous, an acclaimed deep dive into the hacker groups Anonymous and LulzSec. Her 2024 book, Supremacy: AI, ChatGPT, and the Race That Will Change the World, explores the rivalry between tech giants like OpenAI and DeepMind in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence, earning the Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award. Nick and Parmy discuss the intense race to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) and the far-reaching implications of that pursuit. Their conversation highlights the contrast between the idealistic visions of DeepMind's Demis Hassabis and OpenAI's Sam Altman—who saw AGI as a force for solving global challenges—and the reality that both ultimately became deeply tied to tech giants like Google and Microsoft to fund their ambitions. Parmy explains how this reliance shifted the focus away from social good and towards corporate interests. Together, they explore the broader consequences of this power shift, including the lack of meaningful regulation, ongoing ethical concerns around bias and safety in AI models, and the growing dominance of a few large tech firms. They also reflect on the social risks—from job losses and the disruption of traditional career paths to the emotional dependency people are beginning to form with chatbots—raising important questions about the kind of future society is heading towards. The Drive PODCAST HR 3 "Brian Kelly Music Choice" 10/6/22 by FOX Sports Knoxville
Kayden Muller-Janssen talks “Villains of Valley View”, how music has helped her express herself, and shares a big self-tape fail! About Kayden: Wellington, Florida native Kayden Muller-Janssen was raised by Dutch parents in the Winter Equestrian Capital of the World. Her immediate upbringing consisted of farm life, riding horses with her professional trainer parents. While she developed a genuine love for her inherited hobby, she realized early on that her performative, theatrical side needed to be unleashed. After being inspired by the film Catch the Kid, and Disney Channel's popular series Hannah Montana, she knew an on-camera career was her calling. In no time, the aspiring star got into theater as well as performing at home for her family. Simultaneously, she discovered she had a talent for singing upon listening to Christina Aguilera's “Reflection” from Disney's Mulan. This song kicked off her love for music on a whole new level, encouraging her to experiment with her vocals. She credits Aguilera, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse for turning music into more than just her hobby. She joined a performing arts school at age 10 where she learned to perform songs from The Beatles and No Doubt. After hearing “no” plenty of times, Kayden landed her first major television role starring as Hartley in the sitcom Villains of Valley View which recently premiered on Disney Channel. In addition to her acting, the multitalented performer continued making music. She even landed No. 1 spot with her hit “Kiss Kiss Baby” on Radio Disney, and the top five most requested videos on Music Choice with “Kiss Kiss Baby” and “Walk.” While acting and singing continue to be at the forefront of Muller-Janssen's life, she enjoys normal teenage activities, including go-karting, snowboarding and hiking. She's also made time for charity work, taking it back to her equestrian roots with involvement in Brooke USA. The organization works to improve the health, welfare and productivity of working horses, donkeys and mules, and the people who depend on them for survival. Before coming to The Century Foundation, he was a reporter for the New York Times for thirty-one years, spending his last nineteen years there as its labor and workplace reporter, before retiring from the paper in December 2014. He is the author of Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present, and Future of American Labor, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2019. As the New York Times' labor and workplace reporter from 1995 to 2014, he covered myriad topics, including conditions for the nation's farm workers, the Fight for $15, Walmart's locking in workers at night, the New York City transit strike, factory disasters in Bangladesh, and Scott Walker's push to cripple public employee unions. Greenhouse joined the New York Times in September 1983 as a business reporter, covering steel and other basic industries. He then spent two-and-a-half years as the newspaper's Midwestern business correspondent based in Chicago. In 1987, he moved to Paris, where he served as the New York Times' European economics correspondent, covering everything from Western Europe's economy to the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe. After five years in Paris, he served as a New York Times correspondent in Washington for four years, covering economics and the Federal Reserve and then the U.S. Department of State and foreign affairs. Greenhouse's most recent book, Beaten Down, Worked Up, looks at key historic episodes that built the nation's labor unions and shows how unions and worker power helped build the world's largest, richest middle class as well as a fairer, more democratic America. The book explains how the decline of worker power in recent decades has hurt workers and the nation, fueling income inequality and weakening the voice of workers in politics and policymaking. The book also examines the future of the labor movement, looking at new forms of worker power, such as the Fight for $15, the #RedforEd teachers' strikes, and some innovative efforts to lift Uber drivers and other gig workers. A native of Massapequa, New York, Greenhouse is a graduate of Wesleyan University (1973), the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (1975), and NYU Law School, from which he graduated as class valedictorian in 1982. His first book, The Big Squeeze: Tough Times for the American Worker, was published in April 2008 by Knopf. It won the 2009 Sidney Hillman Book Prize for a non-fiction book that advances social justice. Greenhouse has also been honored with the Society of Professional Journalists Deadline Club award, a New York Press Club award, and a Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Reporting. He continues to freelance for, among others, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the New Yorker, the Guardian, the Atlantic, the American Prospect, the Columbia Journalism Review, AARP Magazine, and Nieman Reports. 1:05 Dr. Omékongo Dibinga is the UPstander. This is Dawn's first solo interview! Check it out! Saving Abel is a Southern rock band with catchy hooks and heavy riffs founded by Jared Weeks and Jason Null. Their first single “Addicted” breaking on to the scene, climbing it's way quickly into a cross over hit from mainstream rock to Billboard Hot 100 and Top 40. With millions of sales under their belt, it's easy to see how their self titled debut album charted on Billboard's Top 50 and became RIAA certified platinum. Their debut album delivered two more #1 singles with 18 days and Drowning (Face Down), across multiple charts and solidified this bands name in rock. Their sophomore album “Miss America” did not disappoint and followed down the same path their debut record had set. “Miss America” debuted in the top 25 albums and produced similar charting singles with “Stupid Girl (Only in Hollywood) and “The Sex is Good”. After five Top 10 Billboard charting releases, Saving Abel went back into the studio for their third record “Bringing Down The Giant”. They released the title track off that album finding success and breaking top 10 on multiple charts. Weeks and Null both felt a pull to revisit songs they had written prior to Saving Abel. Which then became "Shade of Grace - Twenty Year Songs" EP. Saving Abel have received multiple awards from MTV, VH1, Fuse, BMG and Music Choice. “Addicted” won most played song of the year. Saving Abel is currently in the studio recording their forthcoming album with a release of an Essentials record this fall. Dr Dave records from one of the great Christian camps in America and ornery Dave feels the need to splash cold water on his prayer team vibe by challenging his taste in music. It is really cool when God connects the dots. So why is it when we try to mix and match the variety of experiential species, we're left with largely disturbing images? Still giggling…

We had the pleasure of interviewing Eliza & The Delusionals from the House of Blues in San Diego! *This interview was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic* Eliza & The Delusionals have never been afraid to think big. “The goal has always been to play huge shows,” says singer-guitarist Eliza Klatt, who founded the Northern New South Wales/Gold Coast band in 2015. Over the past few years that dream has slowly become a reality as the group’s sweetly snarling, anthemic brand of indie rock has led to supports with artists such as Grinspoon, Nothing But Thieves, Dear Seattle and Killing Heidi, appearances at landmark festivals such as BIGSOUND, Falls Festival and Canadian Music Week, and major radio support both locally and internationally. After a slew of well-received early singles, the band’s climb was kickstarted in earnest by 2017 debut EP The Deeper End. A potent mix of buzz-saw guitars, ear-worm melodies and Klatt’s undeniable vocal hooks, singles such as “Salt” instantly caught the attention of national broadcaster triple j. “We’re just writing songs we want to hear ourselves,” says guitarist Kurt Skuse. “You hear us in our purest form in our writing.” Skuse and Klatt go back years, living down the street from each other as kids. They reconnected in the Gold Coast’s thriving band scene, with Skuse joining alongside guitarist Ashley Martin, a friend of Klatt’s at university, to solidify the line up. The extended periods on the road since have acted as a steep learning curve, while fusing the band into a tightly-wound live unit. "We learned how to put our live set and show together through the experience of watching bigger-scale bands do it” says Klatt. You can hear that experience in recent singles “Pull Apart Heart” and “Just Exist”, the first taste of the group’s forthcoming second EP. The latter in particular introduces a more mature subtlety to their sound, with Klatt ruminating on finding a balance between creativity and good mental health against a slowly building and insistent melody. The song has connected in a big way, particularly in the United States and Canada, with Alt Nation – the flagship alternative rock channel of SiriusXM – crowning it their ‘Critical Cut’ and adding “Just Exist” to high rotation. The listeners responded in kind, voting it Number 1 on the Weekly ALT18 countdown, where it remained in the Top 10 for more than a month. The flow on effect has been remarkable, with more than a dozen stations across America – including national network Music Choice and influential outlets in New York, California, Texas and Florida – adding “Just Exist”. The band’s Spotify listenership has jumped by nearly 100% overall and a whopping 400+% in America, while “Just Exist” has exceeded 600,000 streams. Recently crowned Amazon’s Music’s “Weekly One” and “Song of the Week” in the States, the band’s Shazams have also surged by more than 900%. Having signed with renowned US agency APA for North America, the doors are well and truly starting to open for Eliza & The Delusionals internationally.
