Almost out of nowhere, Alabama Shakes' 2015 album "Sound & Color" took the music world by storm. Fueled by Brittany Howard's Janice-meets-Aretha soulful treatise on love, loss and longing, "Sound & Color" brings together blues, rock, soul, R&B, Southern rock -- and so much more. And the world was here for it all. Fueled by the gritty and thumping "Don't Wanna Fight," the album was loved by music fans and music critics at the same time -- a novelty, for sure. It would go on to be nominated for six Grammys, including Album of the Year. "Don't Wanna Fight" would take home the Grammy for both Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song. But like the rest of the album, it's SO much more than "rock."

Firstly, I have to apologize to the Reviewers and Critics I have been lambasting over the past few weeks. Let me just say, SOME Critics and Reviewers know what they are doing. This apology has been brought about by the fact that I bought this album, 'Sound and Color' without hearing it first, just on the say of the Reviewer in the Herald Sun. I can't find the review in this bombsite I call an office, so, unfortunately, I can't name give him the credit he deserves. And, I am so glad I bought it. It is a great album! It is classified as 'Alternative' but has so many great influences and Brittany Howard, the lead singer is compared to Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, and Aretha Franklin. However, Brittany herself took inspiration from Bon Scott of AC/DC in her vocal style, praising his 'soulful' way of singing. Artists on this week's show include DON EVERLY TRIBUTE, The Everly Brothers, Graeme Connors, Gerry Rafferty, Scott Cook, Linda Ronstadt, Anne Murray, and Nanci Griffith. Sensational Guitarists include B. J. Cole (Gerry Rafferty) Dave Mason, Robin Trower (Procol Harum), and Albert Lee.
My guest today is Shawn Èverett, a Juno and Grammy-winning Canadian producer, engineer, previously a guest on episode RSR137. In that interview, we talked with Shawn about his background schooling and his production and mixing philosophies. He has worked with many great artists including Grammy-winning Alabama Shakes, Weezer, Margaret Glaspy, Pete Yorn, Warpaint, John Legend, The Killers, Julian Casablancas, and The Voidz, Kesha, Har Mar Superstar, Local Natives, and many many others. In 2019 he won his fifth Grammy for mixing Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour which included songwriting and production from Daniel Tashian and engineering from Craig Alvin both previous guests on the show as well. You can hear their episodes at RSR176 and RSR232. I’ll have these links in the show notes. I have also become a huge fan of Sound & Color by the Alabama Shakes which Shawn engineered and mixed winning a Grammy in 2015. I feel like this record has set the bar pretty high for my own mixes. Episode Notes Part six of our many part series in which we each examine an artist from every decade (60s-2010s, with a little bonus 50s thrown in there). Our artist gets one song that's more popular, one that's underappreciated and/or less listened to. We're very interesting to listen to, as usual. Actually this is the last part of the many part series. So it's a six part series. Six of six. A half dozen. A half baker's dozen minus one half. That's math. Fin. Track List: "Sarah (Bonus Track)" by Alex G (Trick, 2012) "Sandy (Bonus Track)" by Alex G (Rules, 2012) "16 Mirrors (Bonus Track)" by Alex G (Trick, 2012) "Future People" by Alabama Shakes (Sound & Color, 2015) "Suzanne" by Bermuda Triangle (single, 2017) "I Love You" by Yello (You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess, 1983)

In the early nineties, he embarked on a prolific solo career and has since released many great, highly cinematic jazz-rock albums. Given the noirish quality of his music, it was only natural that David Lynch would call him to work on the "Lost Highway" soundtrack, for which Barry composed no less than four tracks ("Mr. Eddy's Theme 1", "Mr. Eddy's Theme 2", "Something Wicked This Way Comes [edit]", and "Hollywood Sunset"). He kindly accepted to share fifteen of his favorite songs with us, and his selection is worth a seminar in modern music history.01 Ennio Morricone - Gli Intoccabili (Titoli) 00:00 02 The Yardbirds - Stroll on 01:44 03 Pink Floyd - One of These Days 04:23 04 Trouble - Snake Eyes 09:34 05 John Barry - Kill for Pussy 13:21 06 21 Savage and Metro Boomin - No Heart 16:12 07 Jim James - State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.) 20:03 08 The Cactus Channel and Sam Cromac - Iím Not Ready to Relax 25:13 09 The Bug - Fall (featuring Copeland) 29:31 10 Balthazar - The Oldest of Sisters 32:18 11 Alabama Shakes - Sound and Color 35:00 12 Brian Eno - Third Uncle 37:58 13 The Pop Group - Savage Sea 42:35 14 The Dears - No Cities Left 45:34 15 Bernard Herrmann - Taxi Driver (Main Theme) 50:55

Wow everybody, Alabama Shakes’ Sound & Color is a real slam-dunk of an album. It’s a little hard to tell, because a lot of this one centers around Chuck Palahniuk and the bowling alley/bar/bingo parlor in Eagle River, but trust us, it’s great. Also, this episode features calls to not one but TWO unique dads. Get into it!
This week it’s the turn of Clive Gillman, Director of Creative Industries at Creative Scotland, to take the guest seat on the podcast. I’m sure many of you will know him from his 10 years at the helm of the DCA. His journey has taken him from London to Liverpool to Dundee and now Edinburgh. As we chatted about his life and his journey it was clear to see that Dundee has had a profound impact on his life and the time he spent at the DCA is very close to his heart. He speaks fondly of the city, describing it as nugget sized but encrusted with fine jewels, which is a beautiful little analogy. I’m sure a few of you will have heard me banging on about the fact that we should all just go and ‘make more stupid shit’. I was really pleased to hear that Clive has a parallel view that ‘the most important things in life are useless’. OK so maybe not completely useless but that maybe we should just take life a little less seriously and have a bit more fun. It’s definitely something that I try to encourage. We should all be trying to make each other smile more. In contrast to that, when we moved on to talking about his role at the DCA, Clive talked about the more high level strategic thinking aspects of the job which is sometimes thought of as ‘boring backroom stuff’. But behind the scenes it’s got to happen. We need the Clive’s of the world to create vision and direction so we can get behind it. It’s the principles behind organisations that help people feel part of something greater and create something that’s far more than just a sum of its parts. It’s clear that Clive brought this in his time at the DCA and his strategic expertise is now being deployed in his role at Creative Scotland. Amongst many other things we chat a bit about the landscape of the creative industries in Scotland and the importance of creative micro businesses. I love Clive’s belief that everyone has the potential to be creative and make a living from it. If Creative Scotland can help make this happen it would lead to a much healthier creative economy with so many more people doing amazing things. It was an absolute privilege to have Clive on the podcast to pick his brains, I hope you enjoy the episode.
