The word of the day is "distinguish." It's Oscar's season. If you see Oscar, let him know he still owes me $20 all season! I know you said you'd stop eating the shirts, but I don't know if I can trust you anymore. Max got a visit from the FBI (Federal Block Inspectors). Stretch your gams, stretch your truth. On episode 8 of Date with the Night, I'm joined by the legendary promoter, DJ, and founder of IHEARTCOMIX, Franki Chan. Franki gives an incredible, historic overview of the music and party scene in LA during the 2000s, outlining some of the great parties that he started alongside people like Steve Aoki, The Cobrasnake, and Har Mar Superstar. Franki also discusses the infamous turf war between Dim Mak Tuesdays at Cinespace and Check Yo' Ponytail. With the 20th Anniversary of IHEARTCOMIX coming up in 2024, Franki takes a look back at the company's roots in promotions and as a record label, and talks about the transition towards what the company is today: a fully fledged creative agency doing big campaigns and experiences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney, Sundance, artists such as Billie Eilish, and much more. Franki discusses the importance of always looking forward, and passing the torch to the next generation of indie artists and creatives.Follow Franki Chan and IHEARTCOMIX on Instagram and other socials, and make sure to check out the show that IHEARTCOMIX has been producing recently called We've Got Company with Marc Rebillet. PS. The blog that was super influential for Franki that he mentioned during this episode was called Discobelle.

Steve Albini (born July 22, 1961) is an American musician, record producer, audio engineer and music journalist. He was a member of Big Black, Rapeman and Flour, and is a member of Shellac. He is the founder, owner and principal engineer of Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago. In 2018, Albini estimated that he had worked on several thousand albums over his career. He has worked with acts such as Nirvana, Pixies, the Breeders and PJ Harvey. Albini is also known for his outspoken views on the music industry, having stated repeatedly that it financially exploits artists and homogenizes their sound, as well as the flaws in the digital recording process and the superiority of analog technology. Albini's engineering skills have been celebrated for their sense of space, naturalistic tone, and the power of his guitar and drum sounds; his own guitar work is as imaginatively abrasive as his lyrics, which can be challenging and sometimes confrontational. Nearly alone among well-known producers and musicians, Albini refuses to take ongoing royalties from album sales, feeling that a producer's job is to record the music to the band's desires, and that paying producers as if they had contributed artistically to an album is unethical. In this episode, part one of a series of two, all songs selected by Steve Albini as guest for Australian TV show Rage, on June 29 2013. Lineup: The B-52's, Blondie, The Stranglers, Man Or Astro-Man, Chad Van Gaalen, Lou Reed, The Specials, The Cars, Siouxsie and the Banshees, D. DJ Poseur mentions a preference for Har Mar Superstar over both of this episode's picks (for being very slightly more subtle & better produced/more listenable), though he's too famous to be featured. He furthermore appreciates the non-ironic indie sound of Sean Na Na, but these two music videos are, in his humble opinion, a perfect combination of the sex appeal & fantasy pop stardom this episode's picks aspire to: “Prisoner” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgHEeYIV62w & “DUI” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSMCNLpgZ5o DJ Poseur is a snobbidy snob snob.
My guest today is Adam Krinsky a Mixer/Engineer in Minneapolis, MN. He owns and runs a studio in St. Paul, MN called Bellows. In his 15 years of music, he has been a Producer, Engineer, Mixer, FOH Mixer, Tour Manager, Manager, and Educator. Adam's career started after graduating from the Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis. He was hired by the owner and co-founder Tom Tucker as his assistant engineer at Master Mix Studios. In parallel to working in a big fancy studio, he was also moonlighting in a small punk rock basement studio called Vaudeville. A million dollar studio during the day, a Mackie and 57's at night. Krinsky started working at a local guitar shop called Twin Town Guitars which is where he met many of the local musicians. In 2006 he recorded and mixed an album called A Detail of Soldiers by The Alarmists which received local recognition. Since he has never been without a project to mix. Over the years Adam has worked on albums for artists like Bo Ramsey, Mason Jennings, The Pines, Kill The Vultures, Sadistik, and Peter Wolf Crier to name a few. These artists range in genre's from Blues and Folk to Hip-Hop to Indie Rock. Somewhere along the way, he was asked to go on the road. Reluctantly he eventually tried it out and found a second passion in touring. He's since mixed FOH for artists like Iris DeMent, Mason Jennings, Har Mar Superstar, Marijuana Deathsquads, The Pines, and Trampled by Turtles to name a few. He has also taught at a few recording schools and was a field mixer for the 6th Season of Jersey Shore. These days Krinsky is either mixing in his studio or on tour with Trampled by Turtles. The episode you are about to listen to is a conversation that took place between Eric, Evan and Dan that was recorded after allegations of sexual misconduct and sexual assault perpetrated by musician Sean Tillmann — who performs as Har Mar Superstar — were made public. We learned of the allegations shortly after releasing an episode of the podcast where we reviewed Har Mar Superstar’s latest album. This episode offers a behind the scenes look at the conversation that took place as we processed the news and debated how to best respond to it — or whether we should even respond to the news at all. We hope that releasing this episode encourages anyone listening to have similar conversations of their own and speak up if you are witness to any sort of inappropriate or abusive behavior. We stand with those who came forward about the sexual assault and misconduct perpetrated by Har Mar Superstar. This includes those who remain silent, but have had similar experiences regardless of gender or sexual orientation. There is no excuse for his behavior. We also have decided to take down the two episodes of Beats, Beards & Brews where we reviewed the musician’s albums as a sign of respect to the survivors. Thanks for listening, and please, be kind to one another.
A talented singer-songwriter slinging mail for USPS. An aspiring actor selling beard oils as he works to make it big in Hollywood. Three hard-working dudes hitting the mics at night with beers in hand to record a podcast. Hear these stories and more on the latest episode of Beats, Beards & Brews. OK. Maybe that last example doesn't hit quite as hard ... but you get the idea. Eric, Dan and Evan kick things off with a review of the seventh studio album, Roseville, by Minneapolis hometown hero Har Mar Superstar. If you're not familiar with the pop superstar also known as Sean Tillmann or his amazing dance moves ... you're about to get acquainted real quick! Har Mar Superstar songs previewed on this episode include: "Where We Began" "Sleight of Hand" "Neon Aglow" Next up, Dan and Eric drop their reviews of Ringing Bells Beard Oil by Last Looks Grooming Company. The oil's scent profile of leather boxing gloves, boxing ring canvas and tobacco is inspired by the iconic Martin Scorsese flick Raging Bull starring none other than the one and only Robert De Niro of Meet the Parents fame. Finally, the boys share their thoughts on a couple of gimmicky/fun 90s-inspired sour beers. Dan rates the Blood Orange Sour Gummy Gose from Half Brothers Brewing out of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Meanwhile, Eric reviews Hawaiiowan Punch from Barn Town Brewing out of West Des Moines, Iowa. We know you work hard too, loyal listener. Grab a beer. Relax and put those feet up. And tune into Beats, Beards & Brews.
“Existential homecoming”: Har Mar Superstar aka Sean Tillman on the evolution of his music career from sweaty solo act to full band bonanza, his brand new LP Roseville including two songs for Midlife Mixtape listeners, and his pandemic postal pivot. Phones ring on the topic FILL IN THE BLANKS! HAR MAR SUPERSTAR talks to Tom about his new record and working as a USPS mail carrier! TIPPY NERDLINGER calls in with one for the topic.
Har Mar Superstar (Sean Tillmann) joins host Michael Rand on today's show for an interview as wide-ranging as his musical offerings. Information about his new release "Roseville"? Of course. Pandemic life for a touring musician? You bet. Becoming a postal carrier? Why not. The time he played "Pink Cadillac" with Joe Piscopo after a St. Paul Saints game? Um, yes. New Twins beat writer Megan Ryan also joins to talk about the excitement she has for her new assignment and the style she hopes to bring to her coverage of the team. Plus: Was Kevin Garnett even really in the mix to buy the Wolves in the first place? And what is the difference between a beat writer and a columnist?
Podcast #548 is a rumpshaker with bangers from Har Mar Superstar, Strawberry Generation, Stereo Total, No Middle Name, Soda Fountain Rag, Sullen Eyes, Crumbs, All Girls Arson Club, & The Hold Steady.

My guest today is Shawn Èverett, a Juno and Grammy-winning Canadian producer, engineer, previously a guest on episode RSR137. In that interview, we talked with Shawn about his background schooling and his production and mixing philosophies. He has worked with many great artists including Grammy-winning Alabama Shakes, Weezer, Margaret Glaspy, Pete Yorn, Warpaint, John Legend, The Killers, Julian Casablancas, and The Voidz, Kesha, Har Mar Superstar, Local Natives, and many many others. In 2019 he won his fifth Grammy for mixing Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour which included songwriting and production from Daniel Tashian and engineering from Craig Alvin both previous guests on the show as well. You can hear their episodes at RSR176 and RSR232. I’ll have these links in the show notes. I have also become a huge fan of Sound & Color by the Alabama Shakes which Shawn engineered and mixed winning a Grammy in 2015. I feel like this record has set the bar pretty high for my own mixes. Karen Lee Orzolek, or as the world knows her, Karen O, is a South Korean-born American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, director, and it must be said, style icon. She is also famously the lead singer for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who along with members Nick Zinner and Brian Chase, have produced a highly alternative and hugely popular body of work over the years, which is further complimented by her own solo and collaborative releases. Born to a Korean mother and Polish father in 1978, she grew up in New Jersey before attending college in Ohio where she met drummer Brian Chase, and after transferring to an art college in New York, she met guitarist Nick Zinner - the three formed the art-rock group Yeah Yeah Yeahs in 2000. With their first gig opening for The White Stripes, and their debut self-titled EP cracking number 1 in the UK indie charts, they quickly became a vital band in New York's rock scene of the 2000s. Their albums Fever To Tell, Show Your Bones, It's Blitz! and Mosquito all received critical acclaim and commercial success, with the NME ranking Fever To Tell in 2009 as the Number 5 in their Best Albums of the Decade poll. Alongside the success of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O also became heavily involved in the art, fashion and film world, providing soundtrack contributions for director's including Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Tim Burton and David Lynch. This also extended into a long list of collaborations with artists such as Flaming Lips, Har Mar Superstar, Deerhunter, Santigold, Peaches, Parquet Courts, and most notably her Danger Mouse collaboration album, 2019's Lux Prima. This followed up from her gorgeous 2014 solo album ‘Crush Songs', released on Julian Casablancas' label Cult Records. She even recently released a song written for Kenzo's Spring/Summer collection. So come along for the ride as we delve into selecting our favourite songs from the queen of modern rock Karen O and rulers of the art-rock world, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Welcome to a special episode of the IXNAY podcast featuring a song we've written specifically to end the Trump presidency. What started as a rap during his Senate impeachment trial has morphed into a proper parody song, ready-made to go viral. With your help and ours, his days in the White House are surely numbered. Its called IXNAY (The Subpoeña Colada Song) and it's performed by Har Mar Superstar, Eli Janney, and Seth Jabour with lyrics by Trace Crutchfield. Head to IXNAYPAC.org to get a high-quality download of the song for just $1, with all proceeds going to support our efforts to get out the vote this November. Lyrics: I was tired of his WINNING We'd been losing too long MAGA bullshit from beginning Was time for Trump to be gone. With everyday our country reeling A thought crept into my head Instead of burning down DC I wrote these lyrics instead. If you like Subpoeña Coladas, And getting caught in Ukraine; If you're pushing General Barr To wreck what's left of DOJ If you like tweeting out at midnight, And ignoring your fate; Joe's the answer you've looked for, Just endorse him and IXNAY. Now Rupert Holmes is a hero I'd hate to ruin his song But this Cheeto tinted nightmare Deserves the Chuck Barris' gong. So I wrestled with my conscience And checked in with my God(s) They agreed, it was unanimous. Fuck this grifter —but hard. (So) If you like Subpoeña Coladas, And getting caught in Ukraine; If you're pushing General Barr To wreck what's left of DOJ If you like tweeting out at midnight, And ignoring your fate; Joe's the answer you've looked for, Just endorse him and IXNAY. Yes I like Subpoeña Coladas, But want you out of my brain, Just retreat to Mar-a-Largo With Melania and cocaine. You can cheat on your golf course And enjoy your well done steak Joe Biden is your replacement Cuz you're FIRED and IXNAY'D! Very excited to share this week's episode and our interview with Sean Tillmann (aka Har Mar Superstar). What's the best way to best describe Mr Tillman? Songwriter, singer, showman, actor?? As far as we can tell Mr Tillman is a stone cold entertainer. Mr Tillmann has recorded 6 solo albums and earlier this year released the debut of his new band, Heart Bones, a collaboration with Sabrina Ellis. His over the top and occasionally scantily clad live performances have seen him touring with The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Afghan Whigs, and Lizzo. Oh, and did we mention he famously squared off against Ben Stiller in that hilarious dance off scene in the remake of 'Starsky & Hutch'? That's right, he's an entertainer. We caught up with Mr Tillmann from his home in Minneapolis. In our standard fashion the convo was wide ranging and revealing. Topics discussed: coming up in the early 2000s, playing the UCLA quad after staying up all night watching Law & Order, overcoming personal obstacles and learning from prior mistakes, working with Cult Records, being on tour when the country went into lockdown, raising funds for local music venues, donating supplies to the local Minneapolis community in wake of social unrest, not being complacent and importance of voting, attaining a fresh perspective on life and just learning to keep on keepin' on. It gets a little self help-y but we promise it's all worth the listen :)Above all Mr Tillmann is a proper dude. We thank him for coming on the pod and loved hearing about his journey. PS. Thank you to the unofficial sponsor of this week's episode, Alka Seltzer! We're a major of fan of your tropical punch flavored candy medicine!
This time we check in with none other than that international jet-setter and trendsetter, Har Mar Superstar! We talk COVID, Record Store Day, Minneapolis in turmoil, and lots of music (including a SUPER cool music app that you must discover). Enjoy!
On today's episode I talk to musician Sabrina Ellis. Originally from Houston, Sabrina has been a mainstay of Austin indie rock for years. In 2008, they formed the indie rock band A Giant Dog, and since then, the band has released five albums, including a full-length cover of Arcade Fire's Neon Bible. Sabrina also co-founded the bands Heart Bones, with Har Mar Superstar, and Sweet Spirit. Sweet Spirit have released three albums, and their latest, Trinidad, was just released on Merge a few months ago. And it's fantastic! Har Mar Superstar - aka Sean Tillman - may have been making cheeky, kinky, beats-based music in outlandish outfits but he was immersed in the 00s indie scene, too, thanks to his friendships, collaborations and parties with some of the biggest bands of the era. From recording with members of the Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to gigging with British bands in the UK, Har Mar tells The Boys in the Band Podcast about his experiences. He also discusses his different musical projects, his acting roles - and how he has been raising money for COVID-19 victims with colouring books. There's news about a new Har Mar album too... Sean Tillmann and Joe met when Sean played in Joe's basement in the late '90s. Sean tells Joe about: his early love of community theater; the origins of his ambitious nature; creating his Har Mar Superstar alter ego; losing his way in LA; why he decided to get sober; and how a series of coloring books can help those in need. During the age of social distancing, we're recording remotely and releasing daily episodes.
Most musicians wait a lifetime for the chance to be part of one outstanding project. Sabrina Ellis is currently in three of them. The front person of A Giant Dog and Sweet Spirit recently added another project to their already-impressive arsenal. Along with Har Mar Superstar mastermind (and Episode 19 guest) Sean Tillmann, Ellis embarked on a new artistic endeavor called Heart Bones. After a successful tour in which they performed the music of Dirty Dancing, the dynamic duo set out to write and record an album of their own. Last month, Heart Bones released its debut album, Hot Dish, and set out on a lengthy U.S. tour. Before kicking off that run of shows with a performance at The Cooperage last weekend, My First Band host Tyler Maas joined Ellis for a pre-show discussion about the new record, their other projects and everything that came before. Over the course of an hour-long Airbnb interview, Ellis talked about fronting a high school cover band in the suburbs of Houston, finding a place in adolescence at punk shows at a Christian coffee shop, going to NYU with intentions of becoming a playwright and coming back to Texas to join up with former bandmates in Austin and start A Giant Dog. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Heart Bones ("This Time It's Different").
The Opus has yet to leave the Bridge. Although Bridge Over Troubled Water was the swan song of Simon & Garfunkel, it was really only the beginning of their enduring legacy. Since then, countless musicians and artists alike have followed in their footsteps to myriad results. In this surprise, bonus episode of Season 7, host Andy Bothwell speaks to a trio of eclectic musicians who have all crossed the proverbial bridge. First up is David Draiman of Disturbed, who discusses the band's unlikely cover of "Sound Of Silence". Next is CJ Camerieri of Y Music/Bon Iver, who happened to perform "The Boxer" with Paul Simon on the night Muhammed Ali died. And finally Har Mar Superstar shares how his "cover" of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" got him banned for life from the Steele County Fair in Owatonna, Minnesota. In celebration of the album's 50th anniversary, stream a selection of Simon & Garfunkel's best tracks via all major streaming services. You can also enter to win a vinyl bundle featuring the duo's entire collaborative discography.
