This great late-‘60s Lovin' Spoonful tune is the perfect opportunity to answer readers' requests for another little sample from Danny Cox's latest reunion with his old guitar-pickin' buddy Bobby Murnahan. Just listen and at the end this track you'll hear Dan and Bob trading choruses on “(Sittin' Back) Lovin' You.”As reported here last week, Danny and Bobby grew up together in Lawrence County, Ohio. It's rare they can get together these days, but whenever Murnahan travels back this way from his Colorado home — as he did last month — we try to get him to join us in The Flood band room.About the SongThe vehicle for this Cox-Murnahan moment is John Sebastian's 1966 composition, which was the opening track for Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful, the third studio album by Greenwich Village's own folk-rock mavens. Today the disc just barely makes the list of top 50 albums released in that stellar year of rock which saw Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, The Beatles' Revolver, The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, The Rolling Stones' Aftermath and so many more.Not that Hum was ho-hum. Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly wrote the song in 1986 and offered it to Anne Murray, a popular singer at the time. Murray passed on the song. Cyndi Lauper took it and creatively revamped the format into a stark and breathtaking version. The song became a hit worldwide because of its universal appeal. The songwriters acknowledge that Lauper was the perfect artist to adapt the song partly because of her bold style. Released as the title song on Lauper's 1986 album, “True Colors,” is the only original song on the album that the artist did not help to write. In 1998, Phil Collins covered the song on his “Greatest Hits” album. Australian country music star Kasey Chambers covered the song as the theme for the 2003 Rugby World Cup. In 2007, Cindy Lauper launched “The True Colors Tour” to support gay rights and fight hate crimes. Our Randy Hamilton was born to sing songs like this. He and Danny Cox brought us “Spooky” last summer and we've been loving it ever since. Especially when we added Sam St. Clair's funky harmonica and Jack Nuckols' tasty percussion.About the SongAs reported here earlier, while The Classics IV made the lyrics famous with a chart-topper in the fall of 1967, the story of “Spooky” began several years earlier in an Atlanta club. Following a show sometimes in 1965, saxophonist Mike Sharpe (Shapiro) and his band mate pianist Harry Middlebrooks Jr. began riffing on the George Gershwin classic, “Summertime.”As they improvised, they realized they had stumbled upon something special. As they continued, the duo developed their own melody, to which Sharpe randomly assigned the name “Spooky.”The original version was recorded as a jazz instrumental featuring strange high voices to enhance the eerie vibe; it eventually peaked at No. 57 on the U.S. charts in January 1966.Sharpe and Middlebrooks initially thought the song's life cycle ended there, but a year later, The Classics IV added those lyrics about that “spooky little girl like you,” propelling the track to No. 3 on the Billboard 100. Harry's StoryMeanwhile, as “Spooky” was conquering the airwaves, co-writer Harry Middlebrooks was entering one of the most high-energy phases of his career: touring with Elvis Presley. It was the fall of 1970 when Middlebrooks received a call from Elvis's producer, Felton Jarvis, inviting him to join The King's first tour in 10 years.Middlebrooks served a unique dual role on the road: he performed as part of the opening act to warm up the crowd and sang tenor in the backup quartet, providing the vocal harmonies essential to Elvis's ‘70s sound. In a moment of professional synergy, Elvis, who was fond of “Spooky,” actually performed a cover of the Sharpe-Middlebrooks' hit during various live shows and rehearsals in 1970.Beyond his most famous composition, Middlebrooks established himself as a prolific figure in the entertainment industry. Anne Murray definitely got her flowers in 2025. This past September, the Canadian icon returned with her 33rd studio album, “Here You Are,” which features 11 unreleased songs she recorded back in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. She sat down with Tom Power in Vancouver to tell us how a fan got her to revisit those old songs, why she purposely stayed out the U.S. for her whole career, and how her royalties spiked after her appearance on “Family Guy.”

First up this week is an excellent 1982 chat with John Mellencamp, back when he was known as John Cougar – in conversation with Rick Ringer. John can be a bit tough on interviewers, but he seems really comfortable with Rick and it makes for a fun chat. It’s just as John was starting to take off with songs like Hurts So Good and Jack & Dianne. And he was fresh off his first appearance on Saturday Night Live. And what happens when you have only 5 minutes to talk to one of the biggest artists in the world? Marilyn Denis faced that dilemma head on in 2013 when she had mere moments to chat with Lady Gaga. And what she does in that time is extraordinary – you get a lot of info and personality in a very short time. John Waite had a moment in 1984 when he hit number one with the song “Missing You” – and that’s when we spoke to him. And he also spoke about his time with one of the most underrated bands of the ‘70s – The Babys. And we wrap things up with a series of clips from the great Anne Murray. She talks about the challenges facing Canadian artists in the ‘70s and the story behind one of her biggest hits – and how she knew she had a monster on her hands the more she listened to it. Plus, Christopher shocks Tom when he casually mentions something about Anne and HIM! Drummer Gary Craig joins me on this show this week. Gary is an incredible musician who has gained the reputation as one of Canada's finest studio and live drummers working today. He's been at it for a long time and has maintained a number of long-term associations with artists like Bruce Cockburn, Anne Murray, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and Jann Arden. Gary's attention to detail, combined with a unique sense of groove makes him one of the more creative forces in modern roots drumming. Coming up in Toronto in the 70's and 80's, Gary learned from some of the city's great jazz drummers, but shifted his focus to roots, blues and rock bands that appealed to his taste more than jazz did. Landing the gig with Anne Murray, which he got at a young age, Gary stayed with her until she retired about 25 years later. His ability to hold on to gigs and manage juggling several of them at once is no small feat, but when you hear him play, you understand why artists will do what they need to to keep him on board. Gary's also a great hang too, which I can attest to first-hand, and while that might not be the most important thing in keeping a gig, it's probably the second most important! Justin is joined by John Michael Heath from EAP Society for a thorough examination of the 2008 album "Christmas Duets" which paired Elvis' original vocal tracks from 1957 and 1971 with 1:1 re-creations of the backing tracks and some of the biggest female entertainers in the field of country music at the time: Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Wynonna Judd, Gretchen Wilson and others, as well as bringing in a couple entertainers Elvis himself had been a fan of in the 70s: Olivia Newton-John and Anne Murray.  Often written off as a mere cash-grab, the duo discuss the careers of the album's producers, the talented studio band brought in to replicate the original arrangements, and several other guests that reveal a more nuanced picture of a likely genuine tribute to Elvis that ended up trying to play things too safe and went awry in the process - and the guys ponder what makes artificial duets work or flop. With an unprecedented four Juno awards for songwriter of the year, Jim Vallance is one of Canada's pre-eminent songwriters and the creative force behind top tracks for artists like Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Joe Cocker and Glass Tiger. He played drums with the Vancouver band Prism, and wrote their first single, Spaceship Superstar (which was played on the Discovery Space Shuttle). After touring with Prism,  he became a session musician before a chance meeting with 18-year-old Bryan Adams determined his songwriting career direction. The two began a fruitful decades-long songwriting collaboration.  Adams's album, Cuts Like a Knife, yielded three hit singles co-written with Vallance, and reached platinum. The follow-up album Reckless cemented the Vallance-Adams writing partnership in the annals of rock music. No. 1 on the Canadian and U.S. album charts, it sold five times platinum, with six Vallance co-writes in the Top 15, including the duo's first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, Heaven; and the No. 1 Mainstream Rock tracks Run To You and Somebody. Vallance concentrated on songwriting, penning a non-stop stream of hit rock ballads, including the now-famous chart-topping charity single Tears Are Not Enough, a collaboration with Adams and fellow Canadian producer David Foster. Jim's creative talent has benefitted top international acts like Pat Benatar, Roger Daltry, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Joan Jett, The Go-Go's, Rick Springfield, Tina Turner,  Rod Stewart, Anne Murray, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Chilliwack, Loverboy, Toronto, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, KISS and The Scorpions.
