A conversation with Margaret Glaspy - singer/songwriter inspired by a wide range of American music including blues and folk, and stories inspired by life experiences who has released a number of critically acclaimed self-produced solo albums and EP's. Backstage at Blue Note Tokyo before two live shows in June 2024 Glaspy shares stories about writing music that takes her to a vulnerable place, enjoying music from different angles as a musician and a fan, and discovering macrobiotic food in Japan.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Margaret Glaspy joins me on the show this week. Her album from last year “Echo The DIamond” was one of my favorite records of the year. Margaret started out as a fiddle player, and played pretty seriously around California as a youngster before dedicating herself to the guitar and eventually going to Berklee for a short time to study. She played around Boston and then moved to New York where she found her way into the creative music scene in Brooklyn in the mid 2000's. She started making EP's and then full-legth albums in around 2016. I first heard her “Emotions and Math” LP and was really intrigued by her approach to writing, and especially how she seemed to build intricate, angular guitar parts that would weave through her songs. “Devotion” came next in 2020, and then “Echo The Diamond” in 2023. On “Echo”, her songwriting is incredible, her guitar playing is intense and jagged, the band is stellar (she's working with Chris Morrissey who has played with Andrew Bird and Ben Kweller, and David King, the drummer for The Bad Plus). It's a co-production with her husband, Julian Lage, and Margaret has also produced several of Julian's recent releases. She just released a solo acoustic record called “The Sun Doesn't Think” and we talk about all of these projects here today.Check out all of Margaret's amazing music and find out where she's playing over at margaretglaspy.com - Enjoy my conversation with Margaret Glaspy! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Meet Sofia Wolfson, a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, writer, and Fretboard Journal contributor who just released an incredible album called 'Imposing on a Hometown.' This project features a bunch of former Fretboard Journal subjects and contributors, including Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, Mason Stoops, and Harrison Whitford. Mostly though, it's a collection of great songs by an incredibly talented guitar fanatic.  During our chat, we talk about growing up in LA (and the unique venues that helped shape Sofia's music community), the beauty of the Gibson J-45, working at LA's famed Old Style Guitar Shop (where Reuben Cox famously makes rubber bridge guitar mods and started a mini-movement), the making of 'Imposing,' the influence of Margaret Glaspy and so much more. We also talk about Sofia's soon-to-be-published interview with Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker in the Fretboard Journal.  http://www.sofiawolfson.com/ https://sofiawolfson.bandcamp.com/album/imposing-on-a-hometown Give 'Imposing on a Hometown' a listen and then sit back and hear the story behind it here. He is a member of several bands, including Okkervil River and Cuddle Magic. Davis attended New England Conservatory of Music. Davis's father Peter started being a musician at the age of five. Peter toured nationally and internationally with several groups, including a brief time with the Mamas and Papas. Like his son, Peter can play a variety of instruments ranging from banjo to clarinet to trombone. Davis's interest in Africa came through his father who spent three years in Malawi as a school music director. Davis has a brother and two sisters. He collaborates with his brother Tim on songs. In 2006 while students at The New England Conservatory of Music Davis, Alec Spiegelman, Christopher McDonald, Kristin Slipp, Cole Kamen-Green, and David Flaherty founded Cuddle Magic in 2006. The band is known for collaborations with many artists including Fred Frith, Ran Blake, the David Wax Museum, Larkin Grimm, Mike & Ruthy (formerly of the Mammals), Phyllis Chen, Joy Kills Sorrow. Individuals from Cuddle Magic have also performed with Bridget Kearney, Railbird, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Baby States, Ronald Reagan, Bird Fly Yellow, Margaret Glaspy, The People's Champs, Girls Guns and Glory, Lake Street Dive, Petal Shield, Split Red, Yapp! and The Superpowers Horns. Davis went to West Africa in 2009 and 2014 to study music. "The first time I went ...., I was studying awa drumming, which is like drum ensemble music for a bunch of different instruments." Davis is referring to a music tradition involving the djembe and dunun style of drums. In his first visit he heard of northern Ghanaian tradition of music called Bawa. In 2014 Davis traveled to Ghana with Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive and a former member of Cuddle Magic. They spent just over two weeks in the capital Accra, studying the traditional music of Northwest Ghana with master gyil player Aaron Bebe. They subsequently co-released an EP, BAWA, incorporating gyil music as source material. After leaving Ghana, Davis came down with typhoid and was very sick. When Davis and Joan Wasser (Joan As Police Woman) met in 2013, they found they both had an interest in Central African Republic Pygmy music. Davis co-wrote, recorded, co-produced and toured for the album Let It Be You (Reveal Records 2016) with Wasser. Ben is currently based in LA. Leave the studio to like, let everything happen. Cory Wong sits down with indie-rock bandleader Margaret Glaspy for an in-depth dialogue on artistry, celebrity, and the wisdom of Bruce Lee.Glaspy shares how she cut her latest record, Echo The Diamond, live off the floor, with most of the “homework” happening beforehand and studio performances happening in-the-moment. “It really felt like air blew through the studio and then the record was made,” she says. “What you're hearing is mostly what happening.” The songs are like photographs of a particular moment, rather than an essential, unchanging thing; Glaspy says she values the “dying art” of taking risks in music.Glaspy runs down how she and husband Julian Lage work on each other's projects, and highlights one of their key criteria in assessing performances: are you your best guitar player right now? “Would you hire yourself or fire yourself?” poses Glaspy. The conversation turns to Glaspy's rig on the record—she played through a Magic Amps rendition of a black-panel Fender Princeton, plus a Fender Champ combo—before revealing that these days, she's bypassing her tuner pedal and letting the audience hear the process between songs. “Let's not hide what's needed to make this actually go,” she laughs.Wong and Glaspy swap notes on Bruce Lee's winning combo of talent and work ethic (and how one of his quotes inspired Glaspy's record) before finishing with a fascinating philosophical dissection of artistry, pop culture, and celebrity. “The business of celebrity intertwines them in a way that's hard to escape,” says Glaspy, who sees a clash between surface-level fantasy and bone-deep darkness in pop culture.Tune in to the episode to learn all the gems from Echo The Diamond.Listen to the full episode here: https://bit.ly/WongNotesGet 30% off your first year of DistroKid by going here: http://distrokid.com/vip/corywongVisit Margaret Glaspy: https://margaretglaspy.com/Hit us up: wongnotes@premierguitar.comVisit Cory: https://www.corywongmusic.comVisit Premier Guitar: http://premierguitar.comTwitter:

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of talented songwriter/performers who've known each other for years, and who've both had busy years: Margaret Glaspy and Bridget Kearney. Margaret Glaspy has quietly built an impressive catalog of songs over the past decade, putting her sharp lyrics front and center. Her third album, Echo The Diamond, came out earlier this year, and it takes a turn back toward more organic sounds after 2020's Devotion. You may have seen Glaspy on tour over the years with the likes of the Lumineers and Neko Case, and she just finished her first post-pandemic solo run throughout the U.S.—she's an amazing live performer. Chicagoans will have a chance to see her this December when Glaspy opens Andrew Bird's yearly holiday concerts there. In the meantime, check out the bluesy, scrappy “Act Natural” from Echo the Diamond. The other half of today's conversation, Bridget Kearney, is best known as a member of the band Lake Street Dive, the soulful indie-pop outfit that's been kicking around for the past 20 or so years—and probably playing a big theater in your town sometime soon. In addition to holding down the low end for that band, Kearney makes slightly more somber music as a solo artist and more groove-oriented songs in a trio called BB Wisely. In other words, she's not that into sitting still, musically or physically, it seems. Check out the great “I Bet UR,” from Kearney's 2023 solo album Snakes of Paradise. In this lively chat, Glaspy and Kearney talk about their long friendship, which leads to… powerful microscopes. They talk about Kearney's three musical lanes, and how you should trust your gut when the recording vibe is off. And then they get into some powerful advice about exactly how many fucks one should give in a day—it seems like a great system to me, so check it out. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Margaret Glaspy and Bridget Kearney for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Her third album, Echo The Diamond, strips away at artifice to expose life in real terms instead of looking for a happy ending. We are keen on “Get Back.”  “That song speaks to many things that have accumulated over the last few years for me, including grief and loss and finding myself again through all of it,” says Glaspy. “Playing that song sets me free.”

Guitarist and singer Margaret Glaspy released her album Emotions and Math in 2016, and promptly found herself on a whole bunch of year-end lists of the best albums of the year, including those of the New York Times and NPR. It's not hard to hear why – at times Glaspy snarls her way through love's trials and travails, while her guitar snarls and thunders right along with her. At others, she offers something a little more subdued, even melancholy. Glaspy and her trio join us to play songs from Emotions and Math, in-studio. (From the Archives, 2017.)

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

When Julian Lage plays guitar, it's hard not to get swept up in it. His relationship with the instrument is natural and contagious. Maybe that's because it's been with him for most of his life. When he was just 8 years old, Julian was the subject of an Academy Award nominated documentary film called Jules at Eight. Before he entered his teens, he had already performed with Carlos Santana and jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton. While still in highschool he was a faculty member of the Stanford Jazz Workshop. So he was undoubtedly a child prodigy. Lage plays like someone in love. Despite his productive personal relationship with singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy (she co-produces his new record, Squint along with Armand Hirsch), perhaps the deepest love affair of his life may in fact be with the guitar itself.  We talked recently about his new record - his first on Blue Note, which he recorded with drummer Dave King and bassist Jorge Roeder. He told me his story, how he traversed those murky waters of youthful exceptionalism and came out on the other side with more sensitivity, to the music, to his audience, and to himself. During the course of the conversation, Julian also described  the connection between the artist and the audience and how he thinks about notes as having the weight of speech. “I want it to feel like I'm talking to you when I play.” www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.julianlage.com/

Her unique sound and gorgeous musical style left us begging for more, so we asked Helena a few more questions: You said your father was a major musical influence in your life.  Was he your main teacher?Yes actually, my mother too. My dad is a guitar player and my mom plays piano. I got more of 60’s & 70’s rock n roll/folk/latin influence from my father, and my soul/jazz/funk influence from my mothers musical palette. They both were very busy growing up so my main musical teacher became the internet, mainly youtube. How long have you been playing guitar and do you play any other instruments?I have been playing guitar for almost 10 years now. I also enjoy playing a bit of piano. How old were you when you wrote your first song?I was around 12 years old when I wrote my first song. No recordings exist but I have the lyrics written and saved on paper. It’s interesting to me to read my 12 year old perspective on friendship & loss. The song is titled Mind Games. What do you love about being a musician?I love the freedom to express myself the most. Writing music, performing it, recording it, & releasing it, is the way I process my life experiences. It is extremely cathartic for me to set my music free. It’s most natural for me to sing what I feel rather than saying what I feel, and it is exceptionally beautiful when a listener can relate or draw their own personal interpretation from the music I have shared. You have played in so many great venues including the House of Blues and the Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival.  What has been your favorite and why?My favorite has to be Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival. I was performing at a small tent there called the Tea Tent where people sit on the floor and share cups of tea and conversations. I was performing with around 10 musicians & close friends of mine. The energy from them and the unexpectedly large crowd we drew is hard to put into words. It was a great example of how music can bring people together in the most positive way. What is your dream gig?My dream gig is opening for or sharing the stage with any one of my musical heroes who are still alive. To name a few: Lianne La Havas, Margaret Glaspy, Esperanza Spalding, Alice Phoebe Lou, Andy Shauf, The California Honeydrops, Paul Simon, & Joni Mitchell. For More Information:helenaholleranmusic.comInstagram: helenaholleranFacebook: helenaholleranSpotify: helenaholleranTo watch this week’s entire episode of Living 757, click here! And if you would like to see someone featured on the show, please send a message to Share@Living757.com and you may just see them here soon!

Overcoats And Friends Benefit on Tiltify (Live Stream) on May 21Benefit for Association to Benefit Children7PM EDT via Amazon-music's Twitch channel The indie-pop duo Overcoats is curating and performing in a live music festival on Thursday evening, May 21, which they’re calling “The Fight For NYC.” The NY-based band consists Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell, and they – like almost all musicians – have been struggling with the idea of not being able to do the single, most basic thing that musicians do: play music for people.  “We were devastated to not be able to play our Music Hall of Williamsburg show,” says Elion; “our big hometown album show which was meant to happen just a couple of weeks ago. So we wanted to do something for NY where we could donate money to an organization that’s doing good work in the city right now – and get our artist community back together.”  The Thursday night lineup includes such notable figures on the Brooklyn indie scene as Torres, Margaret Glaspy, and Porches – all of whom have recent albums and would normally be touring around to support them now. The organization they’ve chosen to partner with is the Association To Benefit Children, which provides in-person support to families at risk of child abuse and domestic violence, and which also provides childcare to front-line workers in the fight against COVID19.  “It was a NY-centric idea from the beginning,” Mitchell explains. She points to the nightly tradition of clapping at 7pm for health care and other front-line workers as a source of inspiration: “we wanted to dedicate more than just two minutes of clapping to organizations working on the front line. And so it was always the plan for us to really focused and rallying around a New York City cause, and the ABC does really important work.” She adds that they felt the lineup of musicians had to be NYC-based as well. “We have a lot of musicians who are friends and we’ve toured with who are not based in New York, and it would’ve been amazing to have them, but we wanted the whole lineup to be performing as a love letter to New York.”  Overcoats’ new album is called The Fight, and although it was recorded before the pandemic, its theme of resistance and perseverance has taken on new levels of meaning. Hana Elion points to the song called “Fire and Fury”: “it has a line that says ‘the world as I know it is coming to an end’.” As JJ Mitchell observes, “there are a few songs that are ‘we’ll get through it’-type ballads. One is ‘Fire and Fury’ and another is ‘I'll Be There.’ And those have taken on a much more powerful and different meaning for us. It’s sad that we can’t tour now because so much of the joy of putting out a record is the experience of singing it for people in a room and feeling how the words are helping people. But songs are always taking on new meanings as the world around us changes.” The Fight also represents a new sound for Overcoats.  Their well-received debut LP featured glowing, almost folk-style vocal harmonies set in a wash of electronic pop. This new LP hits harder, with more of a rock sound. In the intervening two-plus years, the duo graduated from college, started living on their own, lost family and friends to what Elion refers to as “mental health complications and gun violence,” and came to the realization that, as she says, “life doesn’t get any easier when you grow up, and you don’t really understand much more; you just have to fight harder.” And so the live streaming festival is called The Fight For NYC. Elion, who is actually quarantining in Maryland, says “it’s been heartbreaking to see the struggles it’s gone through – uniquely, because it is New York and because there are so many people there and the rent costs and all the things that makes it an amazing place and also a difficult place. So we really wanted to do something that was centered around our hometown.”   As JJ Mitchell points out, most people know that musicians have been financially impacted by the loss of touring income; what they may not know is that musicians are feeling an emotional loss as well.  “It is a really crucial part of the album cycle,” she explains. “You hole up for two years, and then so much of our emotional rebuilding after having birthed this ‘album/child’ is from connecting with fans. And that’s gone now.” Mitchell admits to feeling nervous about Overcoats’ upcoming online appearance, but Elion is looking forward to the duo curating the whole event.  “I hope people come and watch and donate,” she says, “but what I’m most excited about is just to talk to the other artists and really feel a part of a community. Because that’s the part that we really need.”

On the latest episode of My Favorite Album, bullshit-destroying Californian singer-songwriter and Telecaster-slinger Margaret Glaspy battles migraines to talk about the balance of (*cough*) emotion and math involved in the intricate and emotional Bjork classic ‘Vespertine'. Also, we talk about how she took apart Bjork's song ‘Who Is It' and made it her own, the different responsibilities of being a support act and a headliner, making deliberate craft seem spontaneous, being compared to Liz Phair and whether she's got enough credit for her role as producer on her debut album ‘Emotions and Math'. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. A native of Red Bluff, California, Margaret Glaspy moved across the country to Boston, where she cut her teeth with master classes at Berklee (regardless of whether or not she was a student at the time) and local gigs. A few years – and one set of studio sessions redoing her original, iPad-recorded version of the album – after her cross-coastal move, Glaspy's ragged, blues-affected guitar playing and sharp, watertight songwriting is at the forefront of her debut LP, this year's Emotions and Math. Joined by a two-piece band, Glaspy joins Cheryl Waters in KEXP's studios to play songs from her debut and tell the story of how her songs went from bedroom sketches to full band recordings. When NPR Music asked listeners to tell them their favorite new music artist of 2016, singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy received the second most votes. Glaspy released the album “Emotions And Math” this year. It's a strong debut LP for the New York City-based singer-songwriter, featuring her crunchy guitar riffs and hard-nosed confessional lyrics. Prior to a Denver show at Larimer Lounge, Glaspy stopped into the CPR Performance Studio to play four songs from "Emotions And Math." She also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about recording the album multiple times, performing on "Conan" and staying quiet on the meaning of her lyrics.

By Nick Balkin June 18, 2012 No other artist in history understood the connections between America's great musical styles—blues, jazz, gospel, and country—better than Ray Charles. On September 21–23, the Berklee American Roots Music Program presents Inspired by Ray: The Ray Charles Symposium, an artistic and academic conference that will study Charles's singular genius and his contributions to American music. The event concludes September 23 on what would have been Charles's 82nd birthday. On Saturday, September 22, a concert celebrating Charles's music will be held at the Berklee Performance Center featuring bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs; jazz guitarist John Scofield; blind singer-songwriter Raul Midón; Grammy-winning composer and Charles's former music director Victor Vanacore; guitarist/songwriter Doug Wamble; and Tracy Bonham and Margaret Glaspy with the Wayfaring Strangers. Though a series of panels, presentations, and concerts, the conference will explore a variety of topics that any serious consideration of Charles raises: his singing, piano playing, and arranging; the songs he performed; the relationship between jazz, blues, gospel, and country music in the U.S.; his business savvy (he was the first artist to negotiate the right to own his master recordings); and his identity as a blind artist. For the full schedule of events, visit berklee.edu/events/inspired-by-ray/schedule. Inspired by Ray: The Ray Charles Symposium is presented by the Berklee American Roots Music Program in collaboration with the Ray Charles Foundation. Registration, opening Friday, June 21, is $100 and includes access to all panels and the concert at the Berklee Performance Center. To register, visit berklee.edu/events/inspired-by-ray/registration.
