They mention his contributions to the jam band community and his ability to harmonize and play alongside iconic musicians like Trey Anastasio and Phil Lesh. SHOW #1: First Tube:20 – 1:38Phish with Derek Trucks - First Tube. Saratoga Springs 8/26/23 #phish #derektrucks - YouTube “First Tube,” is the 12th and final track on the band's 2000 album, Farmhouse Anastasio led a performance by a one-off band called 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes on April 17, 1998, at the original Higher Ground in Winooski, just outside Burlington, Vermont. The show was the first time Anastasio performed in public with Lawton and Markellis, who were joined by guitarist/vocalist Tom Lawson of The Pants, saxophonist Dave Grippo, trombonist James Harvey and vocalist Heloise Williams of Viperhouse.“First Tube” was seemingly named for its placement as the first song played at the 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes show, which also saw the premieres of future Phish/TAB songs “Sand,” “Mozambique” and “Last Tube.” Trey, Tony and Russ would go on to form the first incarnation of the Trey Anastasio Band which made its debut — back at the Higher Ground — in February 1999. That concert again featured “First Tube” as part of the setlist. The same TAB trio was also the lineup on Trey's first solo tour in May 1999. By the end of that acoustic/electric tour, “First Tube” was a full-on show-stopper that highlighted many electric second sets. Along with fellow 8 Foot Fluorescent Tubes original “Mozambique,” “First Tube” made its Phish debut on September 9, 1999, in Vancouver, British Columbia. One of two instrumentals on Farmhouse — along with “The Inlaw Josie Wales” — “First Tube” earned Phish a Grammy Award Nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2001. Nominated alongside Peter Frampton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Joe Satriani, Phish lost to Metallica, Michael Kamen and the San Francisco Symphony's “The Call of Ktulu” First Tube” was played by Phish four times when they returned in 2003 but not at all in 2004, the year that began a second break lasting until 2009. Since coming back from the second hiatus, “First Tube” has remained a staple of both Phish concerts and Trey solo shows SHOW #2: Possum53:40 – 55:09Phish w Derek Trucks Live - YouTube The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday (often abbreviated as TMWSIY) is a 1987 concept album written by Trey Anastasio, the guitarist and lead vocalist of the American rock band Phish, as his senior thesis while attending Goddard College. Composed in 1987, the thesis included an essay piece and collection of songs (recorded by Phish) relating an epic tale from the band's fictional land of Gamehendge. On the album, the story of Gamehendge is told in nine parts, with short spoken narration in between. The saga can be compared to rock concept album projects like The Doors' Celebration of the Lizard or Rush's 2112 suite. The story's primary protagonist is Colonel Forbin. Other major characters include Tela, the "jewel of Wilson's foul domain" and the "evil" Wilson himself. Several of the album's spoken narrative sections are accompanied by background music borrowed from sections of the Phish songs "Esther" and "McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters". The final track, "Possum", is the only song on the album not written by Anastasio, having been written by former Phish member Jeff Holdsworth and later added to the Gamehendge cycle.Jeff Holdsworth is a musician who was a founding member of the rock band Phish.[1] Founded at the Redstone campus dormitories of the University of Vermont (UVM) in the fall of 1983, the band originally featured Holdsworth and Trey Anastasio sharing lead vocal and guitar duties, Jon Fishman on drums, and Mike Gordon on bass guitar. Holdsworth left the band in 1986 after graduating from UVM to pursue a career in electrical engineering, shortly before the band recorded their debut self-produced album, The White Tape, though he had played on some of the demo recordings (done in a dorm room) that would later be re-recorded for that album. His songs "Possum" and "Camel Walk" continue to be Phish live show favorites. Rick Mitarotonda (Goose) + James Casey (TAB) - 3/17/23 - YouTube Dear Prudence" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as "the White Album"). The song was written by John Lennon and credited to the Lennon–McCartneypartnership. Written in Rishikesh during the group's trip to India in early 1968, it was inspired by actress Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence Farrow, who became obsessive about meditating while practising with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.[2] Her designated partners on the meditation course, Lennon and George Harrison, attempted to coax Farrow out of her seclusion, which led to Lennon writing the song. Lennon wrote "Dear Prudence" using a finger-picking guitar technique that he learned from singer-songwriter Donovan. Its lyrics are simple and innocent and celebrate the beauty of nature. The Beatles recorded the song at Trident Studios in late August 1968 as a three-piece after Ringo Starr temporarily left the group out of protest at McCartney's criticism of his drumming on "Back in the U.S.S.R." and the tensions that typified the sessions for the White Album. Dear Prudence" has received praise from music critics, with many praising its lyrics and the band's performance. Lennon later selected it as one of his favourite songs by the Beatles. The song has been covered by many artists, including the Jerry Garcia Band, Ramsey Lewis and Siouxsie and the Banshees, whose version was a top-five hit in the UK in 1983. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dopapod over Zoom video! Dopapod access a heightened level of cosmic harmony in their music. The quartet—EliWinderman [keys, vocals], Rob Compa [guitar, vocals], Chuck Jones [bass], and Neal “Fro”Evans [drums]—present albums as experiences meant to be shared out of your speakers andon stage. After generating millions of streams, packing shows coast-to-coast, and earningacclaim from Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Glide Magazine, and more, the group architect animmersive and expansive vision on their self-titled seventh full-length offering, Dopapod. The group's hypnotic hybrid of funk, rock, jazz, bluegrass, and electronica bloomed brilliantly on2009's Radar, and it continued to blossom on the likes of Never Odd Or Even [2014] andMegagem [2017]. Along the way, fan favorites such as “Present Ghosts” reeled in 2.4 millionSpotify streams and counting. 2019's Emit Time arrived to acclaim from Guitar World, Relix,Glide, Jambase, and more. Simultaneously, they sold out headline gigs and graced the bills ofElectric Forest, Summer Camp, High Sierra, and Bonaroo where Rolling Stone named themamong the festival's “best kept secrets.” After a marathon near-decade run, they enjoyed analmost year-long hiatus to realign and reenergize before reuniting with a new fire during 2019and partaking in something of a “soft return.” After a brief hiatus to regroup and recharge their creative efforts, Dopapod assembled whatwould become their next album, the self-titled Dopapod, and looked at the loose threads of theircatalog to conceptually tie their journey together. They chose to self-title their seventh offeringas a totem to the fact they've realized their full potential in terms of music and vision. Tacklingtime travel, balance and symmetry, binary pairs and more, Dopapod's palindromic existencecontinues to conjure alchemy nearly fifteen years into their journey. We want to hear from you! We are super excited to have Dogs In A Pile as our guests on No Simple Road this week. Dogs in a Pile is the culmination of a love of music born from the deepest American roots of psychedelia, jazz, fusion, funk, traditional, and rock & roll. Sprung from the rich Asbury Park music scene in New Jersey, their serendipitous convergence has made for the kind of kindred intuition its members had only once dreamed of. Described as “listening to a single moving organism,” the sum of its five parts represents an original journey into the peaks and valleys of psychedelic improvisation, all while remaining reminiscent of so much we love of life and music. We catch up with the Dogs to talk about their upcoming tour of the Eastern part of the US, creating 'Not Your Average Beagle', realizing that you are doing what you always dreamed of, the responsibility of carrying the future of the jam scene, why responsibility is so damn hard to master, and a whole lot more! For tour info, merch, music, and more head over to www.dogsinapileofficial.comSONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE INTERVIEW: 'Look Johnny' off the "Not Your Average Beagle"SONG AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW: '1/22/22 Cats Under The Stars>Tillie' from the Dogs In A Pile YouTube ChannelRemember to hang out after the conversation with Dogs In A Pile to catch up with the No Simple Road crew!NEW!!! We're super excited this week to have George Fetner of George Fetner & The Strays' as our guest on No Simple Road. “There's a lot you could say about the varied pursuits of guitarist/bandleader/composer George Fetner. But the most pressing takeaway here is that he and his merry band of pranksters in the Strays can burn down a stage with glee - less of a jam band than an omnivorous, chops-heavy rock outfit whose eclecticism is presented with uncommon acuity. Expect a blaze of a set from a group that knows just when to sprawl out and, conversely, when to make a sharp left turn” - Free Times, 10/2019 Columbia, SC's George Fetner and the Strays have steadily gained attention from music-lovers and musicians alike. Culling influences from nine proficient performers, the band has developed a soulful, southern sound rooted in rhythm and blues, improvisatory rock, and captivating musical left turns. We catch up with George and talk about making a return to the stage after the hiatus of the last couple of years, how the feeling of playing live has changed and how that spills over into the day-to-day, why it is important to remind ourselves of the communal aspect of music, and much more! For GFATS (George Fetner & The Strays) news, tour info, videos, and more head over to: www.gfats.comSONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE INTERVIEW: 'Viola Lee Blues' off the album 'Merry Run Around'SONG AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW: 'Scarlet Begonias' off the alMake sure to hang out after the interview with George to catch up with the No Simple Road crew!NEW!!! We're honored this week to have Starfinder Stanley and Hawk from Owsley Stanley Foundation as our guests this week. While perhaps most widely known as the “Acid King” for his early role manufacturing the highest quality LSD to help fuel the psychedelic revolution of the 1960s, Owsley was a self-educated innovator, scientist, artist, and patron of the arts with wide-ranging interests. As such, he had a profound and well-documented influence on other artists, musicians, and sound engineers, among others. Owsley essentially recorded every artist that ever played through a sound system that he built. His catalog is prolific – both in the quantity of recordings and the stature of the artists. These historic recordings comprise what he called “Bear's Sonic Journals.”The Owsley Stanley Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of “Bear's Sonic Journals,” Owsley's archive of more than 1,300 live concert soundboard recordings from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including recordings by Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, and more than 80 other artists across nearly every musical idiom. These analog reel-to-reel recordings are nearing the end of their expected shelf lives and will deteriorate and be lost forever if they are not preserved. We catch up with Starfinder and Hawk to talk about the latest release of Bear's Sonic Journals, "Johnny Cash At The Carousel Ballroom April 24th, 1968". This iconic sonic treasure has a story all its own and the guys from the OSF take us through how this journal came to find itself being released, they share some super interesting descriptions of how Bear did his thing, share with us some of what goes into creating the entire package for a 'Sonic Journal', give their thoughts on why they believe Johnny Cash is an icon of American Music, and much, much, more!Make sure to head over to: www.owsleystanleyfoundation.org to sponsor a future reel, get yourself the sonic journals, and find out all that's going with the Owsley Stanley Foundation! No Simple Road Intro Music Performed and Created By ESCAPERFREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 25% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR OTHER MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CIRCLES AROUND THE SUNOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. No Simple Road starting 2022 strong with Karina Rykman as our guest !In 2016, Karina joined Marco Benevento's band on bass, replacing Dave Dreiwitz (Ween /Joe Russo's Almost Dead). This week you're getting two for the price of one! We start the episode with Lone Tree! Lone Tree is the rock band you never expected. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, this group of 5 international teens formed in 2016 to create a high-energy, powerful sound that is both contemporary while firmly rooted in their influences from classic rock, funk, reggae, and the legacy of great, live music. For the first 4 years, the band was named REFUGE which represented what they have always been about: an escape from shallow, inauthentic music. Originally meant as a joke, it ended up symbolizing their drive for social progress as well as their origins as “development kids”.Then something changed during the pandemic. 4 years together developed their skill and creativity, but being hit with the biggest challenge imaginable helped determine their identity and purpose as a band. We talk with Teresa and Patric from the band about what it is like for them expat, how being brother and sister has helped them mature musically, what the mission of Lone Tree is, some of their experiences dealing with juggling regular life and making music, some lessons learned through traveling around the globe, their desire to express themselves through an entire album, what music has influenced them, and a ton more!SINGLE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE INTERVIEW: 'One Season' - by Lone TreeFOR MORE INFO ON LONE TREE: www.lonetreeband.comThen, Aaron, Melanie, & Apple get into their 2021 recap and dig into the issues of dealing with depression, mental health through the pandemic, their hopes for the future of No Simple Road into 2022, and their favorite episodes of the past year!NEW!!! Happy Holidaze No Simple Road Family! We are so stoked to have Paul Hoffman of Greensky Bluegrass as our guest on the show this week! Greensky has ushered us back into live music in 2021 and we thought there would be no better Holiday gift than to have one of them on the show for Christmas!Since their 2000 formation in Kalamazoo, MI, the quintet—Anders Beck [dobro], Michael Arlen Bont [banjo], Dave Bruzza [guitar], Mike Devol [upright bass], and Paul Hoffman [mandolin]—have unassumingly progressed into a phenomenon on their own terms with the undying support of a devout audience. Rolling back and forth across North America on successive tours, they recently sold out 3 nights at Red Rocks, a feat unheard of in their genre.During 2019, All For Money marked their second #1 debut on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and third straight Top 3 entry. They've also earned critical acclaim from Billboard, Parade, NPR, and Rolling Stone who hailed them as “representing the genre for a whole new generation.”We talk with Paul about finding the things that matter most while coming through the darkness, re-evaluating the things in our lives, creating the new album 'Stress Dreams', how Greensky's music became what it is today through the expression of its members, how things on the road look in 2021 and how that feels, and a whole lot more!SONG AT THE END OF THE CONVERSATION: 'Monument' off the upcoming album 'Stress Dreams'To pre-order 'Stress Dreams', tour info, new, merch, and more head over to : www.greenskybluegrass.comNEW!!! We are extremely honored to have Bill Payne of Little Feat as our guest on No simple Road this week! Payne, who co-founded Little Feat with the late, great Lowell George 35 years ago, has been Little Feat's keyboardist – and its pilot – throughout the band's existence, writing and singing such beloved classics as "Oh Atlanta," "Day or Night," "Time Loves a Hero“ and ”Gringo,“ while ”steering a ship that was rudderless," as he puts it. He's also contributed to hundreds of records as a sideman. The list of the artists Payne has recorded with is as lengthy as a small-town telephone book, ranging from Jackson Browne to Beck to Jimmy Buffett – and that's just some of the "B"s.As you can guess Bill has no shortage of stories to tell and we get down to business immediately in this wonderful conversation. We talk about creating the new single 'When All Boats Rise', getting the band back together, leaving The Doobie Brothers to rejoin Little Feat, how it feels to be going back to his musical roots after all these years away, and so much more! For more on Bill and Little Feat head over to: www.littlefeat.netSONG AT THE END OF THE CONVERSATION: the single 'When All Boats Rise' by Little FeatFOR FREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 25% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CIRCLES AROUND THE SUNOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. We are so excited to have Damion "Yella P" Pearson from Memphissippi Sounds on No Simple Road this week! One fated summer night in 2017 the paths of two uniquely gifted and talented Memphis musicians aligned in a club on Beale Street. Cameron Kimbrough, grandson of Junior Kimbrough and native of the famed Mississippi hill country, brought his raw, stripped-down rhythms from the fresh, open air of Potts Camp, MS, to the crowded room. As the audience took in Kimbrough's beats from the drums, they were blessed by the powerful and mesmerizing voice of Damion “Yella P” Pearson's harmonica. Kimbrough had grown up hearing the blues from his grandfather's juke joint, and later taught himself to play.Yella P. was also self-taught on the harmonica, first picking it up at age 13 and honing his style while listening to the blues on Beale Street.Yella P takes us to school on the difference between 'Hill Country' Blues and 'Memphis Style' Blues, how Sesame Street was his inspiration for playing the harp, how he knew he was supposed to be playing with Cameron, what it was like recording in legendary Sun Studios, and a whole lot more!Head over to www.memphissippisounds.com for all their tour dates and more!SONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE INTERVIEW: 'Crosroads' off the new album 'Welcome To The Land'SONG AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW: 'Go Downtown' off the new album 'Welcome To The Land'FOR FREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 25% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:ANDREW HENDRYXOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. We're stoked this week to have Ethan Miller of Howlin Rain as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Over nearly 20 years, Howlin Rain may have become the quintessential independent American rock 'n roll band: a steam-spitting Hydra of cranked guitars, kicking asphalt dust through a kaleidoscoping travelogue of desert motels and dives, volleying forth transmissions of sci-fi poetry from the blacktop veins of this cracked and aching country. Now, in America 2021, capping these strangest and sorest of times, the band returns with The Dharma Wheel, a six-track, 52-minute dive into a joyous fantasy realm of exaggerated present. We catch up with Ethan for a conversation about the evolving sound of Howlin Rain, creating the new album 'The Dharma Wheel', his decision to add keyboard wizard Adam MacDougall to the mix, how we can strive to not be like the insects, how he feels now that he's able to get back at it on the road, ways to be a little more gentle with ourselves, and a whole lot more!SONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE: 'Don't Let The Tears' off the new album 'The Dharma Wheel'FREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 10% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CIRCLES AROUND THE SUNOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. Nic Clark had a fairly unconventional childhood, which is perhaps one reason why his first album, Love Your Life / Songs for the Whole Family, came out youth-centric. It wasn't that he wasn't supported— in fact, his mom got him the certificate that allowed him to play in bars at the tender age of twelve. It was the school thing. His school system in the Denver area had a truancy court, and he set up semi-permanent residency there around the 7th grade. You see, he had found the blues. Visiting a bookstore with his brother, he found a book about harmonica playing which included pictures of Sonny Boy Williamson and Stevie Wonder and a harmonica….and he never came down. The harp was his school, and he never missed a class there. Soon he was playing live and then, after the shattering loss of both a young cousin and his grandfather, he found the healing power of music, too.We talk with Nic about growing up in a multi-generational household and how that has affected the way he creates music, how he found the harmonica, why school took a backseat to playing, creating the new album ‘Love your life', why he wanted to make an album for all ages to enjoy, and a whole lot more! For more info head over to: www.littlevillagefoundation.com/nic-clarkSONG BEFORE THE EPISODE 'Love Your Life' off the album 'Love Your Life: Music For The Whole Family'SONG AFTER THE EPISODE 'Dance Party' off the album 'Love Your Life: Music For The Whole Family'For FREESHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 10% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:AMENDOLA VS. The third album from Maggie Rose, Have a Seat is the work of a phenomenally gifted artist showing the full extent of her power. After years of honing her chops and making her name as a force-of-nature vocalist, the Nashville-based singer/songwriter has dreamed up her own unbridled collision of rock-and-roll, soul, folk, funk, and R&B: a fittingly eclectic sound for a musician whose live experience includes opening for Heart and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, touring as direct support for Kelly Clarkson, and sharing the Cayamo Cruise bill with Emmylou Harris and Jason Isbell—all in 2019 alone. Centered on the stunning vocal command she's revealed in taking the stage at The Grand Ole Opry over 80 times, Have a Seat finds Rose approaching her music with more confidence and clarity of vision than ever, ultimately sharing a selection of songs both timeless and urgent. We sit down with Maggie and go deep into the feelings of returning to the stage after the forced break of lockdown, the feelings of seeing the crowd responding to her music again, how we can move forward into the future with a little grace and gentleness, what her podcast ‘Salute The Songbird' is all about, her recent experiences playing big festivals, creating her new album ‘Have A Seat', and so much more! For tour info, videos, and more on the Salute The Songbird Podcast, head over to www.maggierosemusic.comSONG AT THE END OF THE EPISODE: 'What Are We Fighting For' off the album 'Have A Seat' For FREESHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 10% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:ESCAPEROUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA.
