in this episode, the boys discuss the passing of Diane Keaton, Peacemaker, Tron Ares and Something Wicked This Way Comes
On this week's exciting episode, the guys delve into a captivating discussion centered around the beloved Halloween classics, Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. They explore the unique themes, characters, and cultural impact of both films, highlighting how each has carved out a special place in the hearts of audiences over the years. The conversation takes a nostalgic turn as Cody shares with Joe the recent addition of Something Wicked This Way Comes to Disney+, a film that many remember as a chilling yet fascinating tale from their childhood. He reflects on the stark contrast between the scariness of children's movies from their youth and the more sanitized versions available today, sparking a debate about how the portrayal of fear and adventure has evolved in family-friendly cinema. Cody also recounts an exciting personal experience, revealing how he and his partner Paige recently won a massive 12-foot-tall skeleton in a local contest. This impressive decoration not only fulfills one of Paige's long-held dreams but also adds a thrilling touch to their Halloween festivities. The guys discuss the joy of decorating for the season and the fun that comes with embracing the spooky spirit of Halloween, sharing tips and ideas for creating the perfect atmosphere. In another segment, Joe shares his recent culinary adventure with his family during a trip to Wickenburg, where they visited Capital Farms Meats & Provisions. He describes the delightful experience of exploring the local food scene, sampling various gourmet meats, and discovering unique provisions that reflect the region's rich culinary heritage. The conversation flows as they discuss the importance of family bonding over food and how such adventures can create lasting memories. Finally, Cody brings up some intriguing news regarding the prolific author Stephen King, revealing that he is currently working on two new novels. He discusses the significance of this announcement, especially in light of King's decision to take a break afterward to spend quality time with his family while he is still in good health. This leads to a thoughtful conversation about the balance between creative pursuits and personal life, as well as the impact of King's work on the horror genre and literature as a whole. The episode wraps up with reflections on the importance of storytelling, both in film and literature, and how these narratives shape our understanding of fear, adventure, and personal connections.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy

Happy Halloween! On this week's special spooky episode, Jeff welcomes Julia back to the show to discuss a few frightningly fun topics, starting with Jeff's review of Disneyland's new Happiest Haunts Tour ("The Villains' Trail"), and we look at the new features for this year and compare it with tours in years past. Then, we discuss Ray Bradbury and his relationship with both Walt Disney and the Disney Company, including a closer look at The Halloween Tree, his book that inspired the Halloween Tree in Frontierland. We also dive into "Something Wicked This Way Comes," Bradbury's cult-ish film produced by Walt Disney Productions in 1983 and we look at its inspiration, the story of its production, its genre (horror? Dark fantasy?), and its place in horror story culture. Finally, we give a quick review of Tron: Ares, while wishing it was doing better at the box office.

Welcome into The Reading Lounge for our October "spooky" read - Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. We are happy we added this to our reading list as adults so that we can fully appreciate the elegant and descriptive prose of Bradbury. If you read this in your younger years, perhaps it is worth a second go around with this suspenseful page turner. We paired this month's read with a cocktail aptly named, Cursed Carnival. Sip on a Cursed Carnival while you let Bradbury spin a tale of good and evil told against the backdrop of a malevolent traveling carnival. It is spooky season when the veil between the material and spiritual worlds becomes thin. Halloween is right around the corner and monsters prowl about the edge of society often taking the forms of something either enticing or frightening. Church music plays backwards and carnivals arrive at 3:00 AM. In this episode of IMBIF, I discuss Ray Bradbury's classic horror story, Something Wicked This Way Comes, with Brad Birzer and Thomas Salerno. A dark carnival arrives at a small midwestern town and two teenage boys are faced with it's terrors and temptations. We talk about Bradbury's beliefs, the nature of the carnival, of fatherhood, and of friendship. Is this a Christian book? What is Mr. Dark? Is he human or something else? What is it about Bradbury's fiction that is so compelling even if we don't share his worldview? All this and more in this exiting episode. Ray Bradbury, the legendary author who passed away in 2012, sat down for an interview with Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff in 1992 at his home in Los Angeles. Though called a science fiction or fantasy writer, Ray Bradbury spanned all genres, from poetry to mystery to mainstream fiction. Among his works include The Martian Chronicles, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Farenheit 451 and The Illustrated Man. This interview was digitized and re-edited by Richard Wolinsky in 2020 and first posted on July 26, 2020, The post The Probabilities Archive: Ray Bradbury (1920-2012), Grandmaster of Science Fiction and Fantasy, 1992 appeared first on KPFA.
A hugely talented emerging singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and voiceover artist with a passion for lyricism, song-crafting and storytelling, Kildare native Ross A.'s singles to date, 'Some Other Time, Maybe', 'Flowing To You, Flowing Through' 'Be OK' and 'Heartland Girl' personify his evolution into an act who creates a world in which its listener can become submerged. Formerly Ross Breen, the Irish musician continues to cultivate his reputation as a respected songwriter through extensive radio coverage of his work, TV appearances and consistent presence on the live scene and festival circuit (Electric Picnic, Body and Soul, Indiependence). Vestiges is a weighty, moody song which shifts from loose, sparse arrangement at the track's outset, into a tight groove where drums and bass lock in with piano before a stirring string arrangement by Cormac Curran (John Grant, Villagers, Lisa Hannigan) lifts the piece further towards its ethereal finale, its soundscape opening out into a wide expanse along the way. In tandem with Ross A.'s freeform style of piano playing on Vestiges, its lyrics, influenced by the Ray Bradbury novel, ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes', are abstract and impressionistic.

As a kid in the 80s, I was astounded at the Disney film, Something Wicked This Way Comes. It ticked all the boxes to my young mind. When I was in high school, I discovered the richness of his storytelling in Dandelion Wine. When I discovered audiobooks, I heard him read to me The Martian Chronicles. He was a great friend of Ray Harryhausen, the great pioneer of stop motion fantasy and adventure films in the 70s and 80s. My father-in-law painted something for Mr. Bradbury, who wrote him back, saying that he had placed his art above his typewriter. Ray Bradbury died in 2012. Today's story was originally written in 1948, in the winter edition of Planet Stories. After extensive research it appears the copyright was not renewed. It's a Halloween special! Two movies, one episode. The Chumps welcome back Cory K to discuss the new Stephen King adaptation Salem's Lot before burrowing through the delightful 1983 Something Wicked This Way Comes. Two movies about small town America to help you wash down that pumpkin spice latte!
In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (1983), from director Jack Clayton and a screenplay by Ray Bradbury, from the novel by the same name, written by Ray Bradbury. When a mysterious carnival comes to a small town two young boys, Will Halloway (Vidal Peterson) and Jim Nightshade (Shawn Carson) find themselves the target of an ancient evil. The film clocks in at 1 h and 35 m, is rated PG and is available to buy/rent from Prime Video. In 1983, Walt Disney Productions released an interesting experiment: A children's horror movie set in an old-timey American town menaced by an evil carnival, with a screenplay adapted by Ray Bradbury himself from his classic novel. Doesn't sound very Disney, does it? It's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES.
Welcome back to another episode of the Video Store Podcast, where we're in full Halloween mode! We're taking a walk down memory lane this week in the comforting archives of Disney. Well, perhaps comforting isn't the right word for these films. There was an era of Disney where they seemed to relish making more edgy and spooky films. These films are perfect for dipping your toe in the water of the horror genre, or if you're looking for something off-the-beaten-path for your Halloween viewing. We've selected four of these Spooky Disney films for the staff picks wall this week to help make your Halloween fun and pleasantly chilling. First up is the 1949 Disney animated short film The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. This gorgeously animated short film, based on the short story of the same name by Washington Irving, is an essential part of Halloween viewing. Told and sung by Bing Crosby, it is a great film best enjoyed with the whole family. For something a little different this Halloween season, check out Disney's undersung 1985 classic, The Black Cauldron. While not necessarily considered a horror movie, The Black Cauldron, does have horror elements, and in the original cut, was deemed so scary that it nearly got an R-rating! Based on Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain, The Black Cauldron is another great example of spooky Disney, and also one that's accessible for the whole family. From the era where Disney tried to inject a little bit of family-friendly horror into their catalog, comes 1980's The Watcher in the Woods. The Watcher in the Woods has a wonderful cast, including Bette Davis and David McCallum. The film is elevated by its cast, creepy score, as well as a wonderful, ethereal mystery. Based on the book by Florence Engel Randall, The Watcher in the Woods makes horror accessible for teens and young adults. Finally, we have 1983's Something Wicked This Way Comes, based on the book of the same name by Ray Bradbury. Bradbury is a master of horror and sci-fi, and Something Wicked This Way Comes is a wonderful example of his mastery. Starring Jonathan Pryce, Jason Robards, Pam Grier, and Diane Ladd, among others, Something Wicked This Way Comes is a wonderful film for the month of October. Get caught up in the mystery and suspense of Something Wicked This Way Comes with your teens and young adults. Thanks for joining us today at the Video Store Podcast for these lesser-known films from the Disney vault. Grab some candy on the way out, and come back next week for more film and television recommendations from the Video Store Podcast. This is a public episode. In this exciting episode, Alex and Chris dive deep into the art of storytelling through multiple mediums. The boys explore the subtle complexities of storytelling in classic films, novels, and comics. The stimulating discussion starts with the iconic 1957 film 12 Angry Men. It examines the intense jury deliberations and how the characters' actions convey deeper themes, such as racial prejudices affecting judgments. The boys contrast these observations with the written script to illustrate the power of visual storytelling in films. Next, they shift gears to the fantastical world of Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes." Alex and Chris discuss how this novel sets an atmospheric tone that pulls readers into its unsettling carnival setting. Alex shares a personal reflection on how Bradbury's work inspired me to pursue writing. Last, they delve into Superman's moral landscape in Action Comics' number 775 tale, "What's Funny About Truth Justice and the American Way." It's a lively debate about the ethical choices posed to Superman as Alex and Chris explore his resistance to tyranny and the abuse of power. Have any questions or comments? Returning to the podcast this week, we have the witty and wonderful writer-director Jessica Ellis. A graduate of UCLA and the American Film Institute who made her feature filmmaking debut with the acclaimed coming-of-age movie What Lies West, Jessica is one of the brightest lights on Twitter and never fails to make me smile. In this thoughtful, charming, and nostalgia-filled conversation that's perfect for Halloween, we share amusing stories from our lives and explore the way that magic has been used onscreen in the films Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Illusionist (2006), & Now You See Me. This week we're continuing our little foray into the world of classic science fiction. The New York Times dubbed Ray Bradbury, “The writer most responsible for bringing modern science fiction into the literary mainstream”. While he wrote chiefly in the realm of speculative fiction, he also worked in other genres, including horror, mystery, and coming of age fiction. His best-known works include the novel Fahrenheit 451, his collections of short stories, The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man, and the speculative horror novel Something Wicked This Way Comes. Today's story was first published in the pulp magazine, Thrilling Wonder Stories, in October 1948. And now, The Square Pegs, by Ray Bradbury.
