In today's episode, we're making our way to Fargo, North Dakota to talk to Annie Wood.I first met Annie through Startup Champions Network and was fortunate enough to visit her community during our Fall Summit in 2018.Shortly thereafter, Annie left the host organization and started a new chapter of her life.Today, she shares what was going on behind the scenes at the time, how she regrouped after leaving the profession as an entrepreneurial ecosystem builder, and what this next chapter looks like.We talked about the grief of letting go of what could have been, and how to find your way back to yourself when you're letting go of a part of your professional identity.Annie Wood thinks of herself as a combination of life experiences - she's a learning facilitator, an experiential educator, and a community builder. Her day-to-day work in student life on a college campus is really the perfect mash-up to use the skills she's developed. In her role, she helps folks explore who they are and where they want to go - through formal programs, mentorship, and encouraging them to follow their curiosities.Annie is a believer in lifelong learning and aims to live with a growth mindset. She is passionate about providing opportunities for folks at any stage of life to explore who they are and how to live a life that matches their values. She believes that each day, we make choices about how we'll contribute to our communities - and that is a reflection of our values. So Annie chooses to have a positive outlook and to validate people for who they are. Outside of her daily work and facilitating trainings, Annie especially loves creating or attending community events with a hint of whimsy and being part of groups that are just a little bit quirky, because the people with the wildest ideas are usually the most fun to be around. Listen to the full episode to hear: How Annie used counseling to help her come to terms with needing to quit and how to let go and process grief Why she took a month for Annie-tober, and why she still does it to this day Why Annie believes in having a personal manifesto of her values How Annie used her network to remind her of what kind of work brings her joy as she looked for the next thing How Annie's current role allows her to empower students to create community Learn more about Annie Wood: Instagram: @annie_likethemusical Connect with Annie on LinkedIn Learn More About Anika Horn: Website: www.socialventurers.com  Instagram: SocialVenturers Newsletter: Sign up for Impact Curator Resources: The Inventurers: Excursions in Life and Career Renewal, Janet Hagberg, Richard J. Annie Wood is a Hollywood native, neurodiverse, Israeli-American  actor (Good Luck Chuck, My Sister's Keeper, Becker) an internationally exhibited mixed media artist, an author, screenwriter, and playwright. Annie was the host and co-producer of the nationally syndicated dating game show, BZZZ! making her the 3rd female solo dating game show host in the history of television.  The Hollywood Reporter compared Annie's comedic chops to the legendary actresses, Jean Harlow and Mae West declaring that a new comic blonde is on the scene! Annie Wood is a find!  Annie was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and confesses to being a “creative compulsive.”  Annie can juggle kiwis for about 3 seconds.  (The fruit, not people from New Zealand.) Now you know everything. Almost...Annie's father was diagnosed with dementia but only after researching his horrible reaction to the antipsychotics that his doctors put him on did she do a deep dive to discover that he most likely had Lewy body dementia, the kind without Parkinson's.  His main symptom is he has auditory hallucinations.  And in particular, one that recurred on a very consistent basis. After a stressful few months with ER visits and lots of wild times, Annie placed her father into assisted living (he was previously living in a senior living place with his own apartment without additional help) and is able to see him almost everyday. During the really chaotic time when her father thought the voice was going to kill her,  Annie turned to her talents to cope - writing,  painting, as well as other expressions of art, which resulted in 44 powerful  pages of art and poems that she shares HERE.Annie is currently writing a play called "Nudnik", the nickname she gave the main voice her father hears, that is scheduled to be read at the Dramatist Guild upon its completion. She is thinking about a documentary short incorporating her poetry.  Connect with Annie:TWITTERINSTAGRAMPINTERESTGet her book, "Just a Girl in The Whirl", HERE on AmazonSUPPORT OUR NEW AFFILIATES!MEUNDIES  - use the promo code LOVEALZ for 15% off your first purchaseYOUTHFORIA - use the promo code LOVE  for 10% off your first purchase   Support the show

Did you enjoy Valentine's Day? Well if you didn't, we got the perfect medicine with these two love-themed episodes of It Was a Thing on TV.   First, Vanna White was everywhere in the late 80s--Wheel of Fortune twice a day, touring the country by train, a best-selling writer, and scantily clad in an adult magazine.  NBC tried to capitalize on her success with a made-for-TV movie starring Vanna called Goddess of Love, which was downright bad.   Then, the love theme continues with a fun little game that didn't have the run it deserved, the late-90s Annie Wood speed dating game Bzzz!   Remember to follow us on our social media feeds over @ItWasAThingOnTV and if you have any feedback regarding the show e-mail us at itwasathingontv@gmail.com

We did something a little different on this episode we added a behind the scenes bonus at the end. Annie jumps out of character and we talk about our feelings on Anne Frank and making this episode. So, stay tuned to hear the behind the scenes. Who is Annie Wood: Annie is a double Aquarius and a creative compulsive, easily inspired Hollywood native. An author, artist, actress & former dating game show host. Annie enjoys watching live car pursuits and the word "nincompoop." Learn about her current art project about trailblazing women, "Pardon Me While I Blaze Some Trails" at anniewood.com Annie Instagram Annie Twitter Annie Facebook https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/pardon-me-while-i-blaze-some-trails Favorite Career Highlight: I was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno back when I was the host of the nationally syndicated show, BZZZ! That was pretty cool. What Annie learn from Anne Frank: If Anne could experience the kind of hate and turmoil in the world during her short life and still believe that people are "good at heart," then so can us all.   Who is Anne Frank: A young Jewish girl named Anne Frank (1929-1945), her parents and older sister moved to the Netherlands from Germany after Adolf Hilter and the Nazis came to power there in 1933 and made life increasingly difficult for Jews. In 1942, Frank and her family went into hiding in a secret apartment behind her father’s business in German-occupied Amsterdam. The Franks were discovered in 1944 and sent to concentration camps; only Anne’s father survived. Anne Frank’s diary of her family’s time in hiding, first published in 1947, has been translated into almost 70 languages and is one of the most widely read accounts of the Holocaust.  How to show love to Project Woo Woo: Click here to buy Lisa a cup of joe.   This episode was also supported by Amazon. Tea with a Titan: Conversations Steeped in Greatness |Achievement | Olympics | Olympians| Success | Athletes | Entrepreneurs

I have admired Annie Wood for the better part of a decade. She exemplifies the commitment to rising after a setback, and to continually moving forward. She’s as dedicated to the process of living an authentic life as anyone I’ve ever met -- and then some. You may know her from memorable appearances in movies like Good Luck Chuck with Dane Cook, and My Sister’s Keeper with Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin. But when I think of Annie, I think so much more. She’s as prolific a creative person as they get. She goes -- not stop. Her output is tremendous and admirable and head-scratching. If she were a cyclist I’m sure she’d be tested for doping – really; she’s just that good. She knows that the notion of “arriving” is a myth… that just being here is the gift. There is no “arrival”. And unless we’re celebrating all the small moments along the way over the chronology of our lives, we are missing the point entirely. In addition to being born in Hollywood and enjoying a 30+ year career here, she’s not only an actor, but she’s a writer and a producer as well. Her YouTube series Karma’s a Bitch has approximately 2,000,000 views and was awarded Best of the Web on Virgin Airlines. She’s also an artist – you can check out her super great work on her Etsy shop (I bought one of her gorgeous tiles, and you can too) via the link at MJDionne.com, under the podcaster tab. She’s the creator of the DoGoodStuff.org, which gently reminds us to be kind. On top of all this, she’s what she calls a Mindfulness Enthusiast. In the chaos and uncertainty of the journey – and hey, we’re all on one – she knows the value of stopping to breathe. Despite living the entirety of her life in a city known for being at times unforgiving and cut throat, this is a woman who does yoga every day – not “almost” every day, but actually every day. When her mom, Abby, a woman who fled an abusive relationship in Israel with Annie’s two older brothers, was dying, Annie set up her yoga mat beside her deathbed – in an effort to stay grounded during the hardest days of her own life. And we talk about that. We also talk about some super cool pop culture stuff too – those stories I love, that come from peeking in the portal of another person’s life experiences. During her tenure as the host of the nationally syndicated game show host “Bzzz”, Annie was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. And come on, don’t we all want to know what THAT would be like? Of course we do. We are all on a journey, and whether we call ourselves “creative” or not – we are all in fact creative. What could be more creative than designing an authentic life? Nothing, that’s what. And if you’re listening to this series, that’s what you’re doing, consciously or otherwise, and I applaud you for it. Anyone who decides to live more true-to-themselves, and to abandon the outside clutter, and who choses to live more courageously, more creatively, gets my full respect. So thank you. I know you will love Annie for all of these reasons.
