We continue our strengthening the family series with special guest C. Nichole Nash. C. Nichole Nash is a licensed professional counselor and owner of 9FRUITS Counseling. Nichole is passionate about child literacy in Memphis. Nichole has been a literary coach at the non-profit organization ARISE2READ since 2019. In this episode, Nichole breaks down Maslow's hierarchy of needs and how it correlates to recycling trauma and bridging generational gaps. We combat the “that's just how it is” mindset while encouraging understanding and empathy for generational differences. Nichole gives context to the renewal of the mind through various approaches such as awareness, reframing, challenging narratives, fruit inspection, and aligning ourselves to shift. Challenging normalcy, extending grace to yourselves, and combating fear are just a few tools to employ as we take ourselves to the next level. Karen Vogelsang, director of ARISE2Read shares their efforts of engaging students at risk in the battle of literacy by serving elementary students at risk for reading failure. They do this by recruiting and training volunteers to provide students with focused support to acquire the literacy skills needed. Additionally, Karen discusses her trip to the 2023 World Literacy Summit, as well as her time as an elementary teacher. She recalls Ezekiel Kelly, one of her students, being recruited by gangs while in the 2nd grade. Sadly, in September of 2022 as an adult, Ezekiel Kelly was accused in a shooting spree that put Memphis in an hours-long lockdown. He faces 28 charges, including three counts of first-degree murder. This horrific event is one of the many reasons that Arise2Read is motivated to fight the literacy battle.

Save a child. Save a family. Save a city. That's the vision of ARISE2Read, a partnership of evangelical churches and businesses with local school districts to strengthen second-grade students and enable them to enter third grade reading on grade level begun by Donna Gaines in 2012. Mrs. Gaines is the wife of Dr. Steve Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tennessee. With a background in elementary education and a heart for her city, Donna has mobilize hundreds of volunteers to spend one hour each week reading with at risk children in Shelby County Schools. Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the fourth-grade will end up in jail or on welfare, so helping children learn to read at grade level by third grade is a game changer.
