What Does It Mean to Be Rational at Work? | Barry Schwartz

Rational choice theory has become so familiar that it can feel like common sense. We talk about trade-offs, optimization, ROI, and risk as if they capture what it means to think clearly. But many of the decisions that matter most do not work that way. They are shaped by context, values, relationships, and the larger story of a life. In this episode, Barry Schwartz returns to discuss how rational choice theory became the default way we think, how it shapes work and decision-making, and what a more human approach to being rational might look like.Barry Schwartz is a psychologist and professor emeritus at Swarthmore College. He studies decision-making, motivation, and the role of meaning in work and life.In this episode, Dart and Barry discuss:- Why we treat decisions like math- What gets lost when everything becomes a number- Why some choices cannot be compared- The difference between risk and uncertainty- How framing shapes every decision- Why metrics can crowd out judgment- The danger of maximizing everything- Why good enough can be wiser- How choices fit into a larger life story- Why counting is not the same as thinking- And other topics…Barry Schwartz is the Dorwin P. Cartwright Professor Emeritus of Social Theory and Social Action in the Psychology Department at Swarthmore College, and Visiting Professor of Management at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. His work focuses on decision-making, motivation, moral judgment, and meaning in work and life. “Choosing friends carefully is one of the most important decisions you can make in life, because the people you surround yourself with will either shape your growth or influence your downfall. Friends are not just companions for good times; they are voices that impact your thinking, your decisions, and your direction. The right friends will challenge you to become better, support you in difficult moments, and celebrate your progress without envy. On the other hand, the wrong circle can drain your energy, distort your values, and quietly pull you away from your purpose. Wisdom is found in observing character, not just enjoying company, and understanding that not everyone deserves access to your inner world” — SSRGO#ChooseWisely #CircleMatters #LessonOfLifeSeries #RightCompany #ProtectYourPeace #GrowthCircle #LifeWisdom #BeSelective #QualityOverQuantity #StayFocusedLessonOfLifeSeries@Gmail.Comhttps://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/searching-finding-upholding-your-purpose-samuel-richard-oteng/1143757079?ean=2940161070031

Hello to you listening in Auckland, New Zealand! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate  Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. As the oldest of 7 children I learned early on the innate wisdom toddlers bring to the game of life. They know how to say No! And then the world shows them the error of their ways. We grow up saying Yes when we mean No! What changed? We were taught that saying Yes is right, good, proper, helpful even and saying No! is just plain wrong. The problem is the more we say Yes when we mean No we forget how to make choices in our own best interest and well-being. This self-sabotage robs us of our ability to choose wisely, of our personal power, of our legitimate right to say No! with certainty, confidence, and clarity. Of course, there's nothing wrong with saying Yes so long as we agree with ourselves, are not limited in our options, feeling compelled, or thinking we will be rejected or worse.  It takes practice to practice saying No! As you get better at it you will come to value saying what you mean and meaning what you say.   Practical Tip: When asked to take on work you want to decline, say this, “No. It's good work; but it's not my work.” And thank you for listening!    You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! Touching Lives with Dr. James Merritt

What happens when you trust the wrong guide? While driving through northwest Indiana, a man named Iftikhar Hussain drove off a ramp to a bridge that no longer existed, killing his wife Zohra. Police believe he ignored numerous barricades including orange barrels, cones, large “Road Closed” signs, and concrete barriers, all because he was listening too closely to his GPS. His wife died not because a bridge was out but because her husband made the wrong decision. The story is a heartbreaking picture of what life is really about. The force of your life and the course of your life are defined by your decisions. You are where you are, who you are, and what you are right now because of your decisions. Dr. Seuss said it best: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” In Genesis 13, we meet Abraham's nephew Lot, whose name fits perfectly. He had a choice between two lots of land and chose the wrong lot, and it cost him a whole lot. The story teaches us about pre-decisions, meaning those decisions you make before you make “the decision.” When you make good pre-decisions, you'll stick to your convictions instead of caving to your circumstances. See how your problems reveal your priorities, your priorities drive your decisions, and your daily practices determine where those choices take you.

The Man Who Had It All series, Pastor Brandon walks us through one of the most pivotal chapters in Solomon's life — the moment where wisdom and drift exist side by side. Using the powerful illustration of drifting at the beach, this message shows how spiritual compromise rarely happens overnight. It happens slowly. Subtly. One small decision at a time. We explore: • Solomon's early compromises • The difference between wisdom and knowledge • The famous “cut the baby in half” moment • How success can mask spiritual drift • Why finishing well matters more than starting strong Solomon asked God for wisdom — and God gave it generously. But even wisdom cannot protect someone who slowly drifts from obedience. This message is both a warning and an invitation: If you've been drifting, you can come home.

Most of the regret in our lives doesn't come from the last domino—it comes from the first one. It started with a decision that we didn't stop to examine. In this message, Lead Pastor Jamie Nunnally teaches us to pause and ask, "Are you sure about that?" It's space between the dominoes that can stop the next one from falling. Lamentations 3:40 NLT Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord. Most regret isn't from bad intentions—it's from unexamined decisions.1. What would I think about someone who made the choice that I'm about to make? We're really good at evaluating everyone else, yet God calls us to turn that discernment inward.1 Corinthians 11:31 NASB But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. The Word of God is first a mirror to examine our own lives, not a microscope to inspect everyone else's. You can tell a lot about yourself by paying attention to who else is making the same choices that you are. 2. Have I gotten Godly advice?Proverbs 12:15 NLT Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others.Proverbs 27:6 NLT Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.Godly wisdom always makes room for godly voices. And if everyone agrees with you, you didn't ask the right people.  3. Will I want to tell this story?Haggai 1:5 MSG Take a good, hard look at your life. Think it over. Some choices create stories you hide; others create stories you cherish. You don't write your life story all at once. You write it choice by choice.  4. Do I really want to do this, or is this what others want me to do?Some of the most dangerous decisions happen when we confuse God's voice with other people's opinions.Romans 14:12 NLT "So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God."Other people can advise you, but only you will give account to God for your decisions. Make sure its what you really want to do. 5. Will this glorify God?Every decision reflects your devotion.Matthew 5:16 NLT In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Your choices don't just reveal what you value, they reveal who you worship. Before a surgeon ever makes the first incision, the entire operating room pauses for what's called a surgical time-out. Everything stops and the surgeon asks a series of critical questions. If anything is unclear, the surgery doesn't proceed—because once the cutting starts, you can't undo it.The more important the mission, the more intentional the questions. God often speaks loudest in the pause we're tempted to skip. Are you you sure about that?

And it is true that the way we think about the world changes the world, but it changes the world materially. It does not just change the world because of the ideas we have running around in our heads; it changes the material world. Yeah. The factory did not exist, and then it did. And as a result, what it meant to work changed. That was not in our heads. That was, you know, a structure that was out in the world that made demands on the people who walked in the door every day. So it was not idealism. The argument was that ideas change not just how people think, but what kinds of things people are able to do. And I think the same thing is true with rational choice theory, though it is a bit more abstract. You know, you cannot do a rational choice analysis without being able to quantify. Why we can't game the way to design incentives14:16: People somehow think that there is a bulletproof way to design incentives, so that they will not distort why they gave us the incentives they are designed to encourage. And, the bad news is there is no such thing, and there is no system that cannot be gamed. How economics changes the way we think07:22: There is a general, more general problem in social science, which is that, unlike planets, people are affected by claims that are made about what they are like. And so, the more we read social science, and the more economics, the king of the social sciences, dominates the news, the more inclined we are to think like and act like economists. So, does this tell us that the economists have discovered something? No. I mean, maybe. But it is just as likely that what economists have done is create something. They have created a way of approaching decisions and value assessment and so on that is consistent with their framework and changed people as a result. What we miss when we measure everything42:15: Rational choice theory is not neutral about what stays in the frame and what goes outside it. Things that go outside the frame are the ones that are most difficult to quantify using the same scale that you are using for everything else. And so, in the case of the price of a pound of beef, you could add the amount of money that our taxes contribute to subsidies. You could factor in the costs of the fertilizers that enable the corn to grow enough so that the cows can get fattened up. How do you quantify exactly the cost to human health? You can do it. How many more dollars do we pay per year because of antibiotic-resistant bacteria? But does that capture the cost in health? No. It only captures the dollar cost in health.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Rational Choice ModelDaniel KahnemanReinforcement LearningB. F. Read the full transcript here. What does rationality mean when life won't fit a spreadsheet? If models demand one common scale, what happens to values that can't be compared? Are we optimizing choices, or narrowing them to what's easy to count? When do toy problems stop teaching us about real ones? Can preferences be “mapped” if the act of asking reshapes them? When is precision a disguise for guesswork? What standard should judge error when the world is fuzzy by design? If we want better decisions, should we start by choosing better frames? How do fast intuitions and slow reflection share the work when stakes are high? When should we pause because the first answer felt too easy? How can diverse perspectives expose what one mind won't see? How do we weigh the uncountable without pretending it's all commensurate? What does a life well chosen look like beyond being error-free? Barry Schwartz is an emeritus professor of psychology at Swarthmore College and a visiting professor at the Haas School of Business at Berkeley. He has spent fifty years thinking and writing about the interaction between economics, psychology, and morality. He has written several books that address aspects of this interaction, including The Battle for Human Nature, The Costs of Living, The Paradox of Choice, Practical Wisdom (with Kenneth Sharpe), Why We Work, and most recently, Choose Wisely (with Richard Schuldenfrei). Schwartz has spoken four times at the TED conference, and his TED talks have been viewed by more than 25 million people.
