You know what's truly terrifying? Realizing you and someone you share money decisions with have completely different ideas about finances—and you're both convinced you're right. Joe Saul-Sehy and OG welcome Doug and Heather Bonaparte, a CFP and business partner duo who've mastered the art of not killing each other over finances. And when you work together AND live together? Let's just say they've had plenty of practice navigating the financial frights that haunt any relationship where money's involved. Whether you're married, dating, splitting rent with a roommate, or partnering on a business venture, the same money monsters show up: the "fair split" debates, the family expectation zombies that won't stay dead, and those vampiric spending habits that drain shared accounts when you're not looking. Doug and Heather share what actually works—the timing tricks, the tone shifts, and the teamwork strategies that keep financial conversations from turning into horror shows, no matter who you're talking to. This isn't about becoming perfect financial partners overnight. It's about exorcising the money demons before they possess your most important relationships—romantic, professional, or otherwise. Plus: Joe and OG stir the cauldron with Halloween movie talk and trivia, because even the scariest conversations are better with a little basement humor. What You'll Walk Away With: How to start money conversations without summoning the spirits of past arguments (works for spouses, roommates, business partners, you name it) Doug and Heather's hard-won strategies for navigating disagreements when money and relationships overlap Why "financial transparency" isn't about policing every purchase—it's about understanding each other's money ghosts The three things any financial partnership needs to align on before the little stuff stops haunting you Permission to be messy while you figure this out (even CFPs have money fights) This Episode Is For You If: You share financial decisions with ANYONE—a partner, roommate, business associate, or family member Money conversations feel like walking through a haunted house blindfolded Someone else's financial habits make you want to scream louder than a horror movie victim You're tired of being cast as the villain every time you want to discuss shared expenses You need proof that even professionals who literally do this for a living still have to work at it FULL SHOW NOTES: https://stackingbenjamins.com/money-communication-horror-stories-1754 Deeper dives with curated links, topics, and discussions are in our newsletter, The 201, available at https://www.stackingbenjamins.com/201 Enjoy! This week, Monika takes on the headline-grabbing claim that Indians need just ₹3.5 crore to retire, based on HSBC's Affluent Investor Snapshot 2025. She explains why a survey of only 1,006 people cannot give us a one-size-fits-all number for something as deeply personal as retirement. Using her three-bank-account system, Monika shows how to calculate expenses, adjust them for inflation, and arrive at a realistic corpus — one that could be far higher than the study suggests.Monika also shares practical milestones to track: 3x your annual income by age 40, 6x by 50, and 8x by 60. She stresses that retirement planning depends on lifestyle, healthcare needs, and investment choices, not arbitrary averages. With tools like SEBI's calculators and the worksheets in her book Let's Talk Money, she urges listeners to run their own numbers and avoid being misled by simplistic estimates. This week's listener questions include Raghavendra V B asking how to map multiple mutual funds to different goals without creating overlap, Amit Gujral seeking the right strategy to build a long-term portfolio for his newborn daughter, and an anonymous listener from Bangalore debating whether to prioritize home loan repayment or SIP investments.Chapters:(00:00 – 00:00) The Problem with “Rs 3.5 Crore to Retire” Headlines(00:00 – 00:00) How to Estimate Your Retirement Corpus the Right Way(00:00 – 00:00) Mapping Mutual Funds to Goals Without Overlap(00:00 – 00:00) Planning for a Child's Future While Securing Your Own(00:00 – 00:00) Home Loan vs SIP: Which Should You Prioritize?https://amzn.in/d/6gbEbrMIf you have financial questions that you'd like answers for, please email us at mailme@monikahalan.com Monika's book on basic money managementhttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-money-english/Monika's book on mutual fundshttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-mutual-funds/Monika's workbook on recording your financial lifehttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-legacy/Calculatorshttps://investor.sebi.gov.in/calculators/index.htmlYou can find Monika on her social media @monikahalan. Send us a textIn this episode of The Business of Beautiful Spaces, Laura Thornton sits down with financial therapist Aseel El-Baba to dive deep into the hidden challenges creatives and designers face around money, self-worth, and pricing. Aseel shares her inspiring personal journey from growing up in Lebanon and immigrating to Canada, to becoming a Bay Street financial advisor, and ultimately shifting to a holistic practice as a financial therapist. Through her story and expertise, Aseel reveals why so many designers—especially women—struggle to charge what their work is truly worth, and how money taboos and deep-seated beliefs from childhood and culture continue to impact our businesses today.Together, Laura and Aseel explore practical tools and mindset shifts to help designers build confidence with money, reframe their relationship with wealth, and weather the inevitable feast-or-famine cycles of the industry. The conversation covers the power of somatic practices, emotional literacy, and the importance of making financial decisions from a grounded, empowered place rather than fear. Listeners will leave with actionable advice and the inspiration to redefine wealth and value in both their business and personal lives.Holistic Optimal Wealth: https://www.holisticoptimalwealth.com/In just one focused hour, we'll dive into whatever you need most—pricing strategies, client management, attracting high-end clients or building repeat business. You may remember Jason Tartick from his stint on "The Bachelorette" years ago. He was vying for Becca Kufrin's heart on season 14 of the show back in 2018. He came in third. But, following that he actually got engaged to a different "Bachelorette," Kaitlyn Bristowe, a couple of years after her season ended. Their engagement was broken off in 2023. Since his time on reality television, Tartick, went back to his financial roots and has been helping couples navigate love and the role money plays in relationships. He's written two books called "Restart Roadmap Rewire and Reset Your Career" and "Talk Money to Me: The 8 Essential Financial Questions to Discuss with Your Partner." Tartick said that he's been watching this season of "Bachelor in Paradise," and he has some advice for whoever wins the show's $500,000 prize. "Now with Paradise we have this money pool, $500,000 on the line. I think it's great because you are kind of forcing these conversations, really important conversations that we should be having anyway," Tartick said. "So for whoever does win it, I think the biggest thing is you can't decide what you are going to do with the money or how you are going to do it, or what percentage goes where until you understand everyone, and each individual's relationship with money." When it comes to whether or not he'd do reality television again, possibly being the next "Bachelor," he didn't rule it out. "I always say like, you never say never, but I will say since like I don't know what was it, like the last two years there have been five different shows that have approached me to go on and my desire to go back on reality tv is quite low right now, so never say never, but I'd prefer if I was going to go back in for it to be a competition like show but you never know," Tartick said. There's a growing social media buzz calling for him to be the next "Bachelor," but he said he didn't realize that. "That's news to me! Some people have sent me these articles that are like these rumors but, yeah, I don't know where all that stuff comes from," he said. In fact, he said his mom started to joke that he was getting too old for the regular "Bachelor" series. "My mom was joking around saying, 'Bachelor! You're 36! They have a Golden Bachelor, maybe they'll have a Silver Bachelor, I thought that was pretty funny," Tartick said.
