Spacecraft carry all kinds of sensors, but rarely the one humans rely on most: video. Despite offering the richest insight per watt, gram, and dollar, cameras have been largely absent from orbit. That's what TRL11 is out to change. The company is building radiation-tolerant optics, edge computers that process and compress video in real time, and ground software that turns footage into operational awareness. On this episode of Valley of Depth, I'm joined by Nicolaas Verheem, founder and CEO of TRL11. Nicolaas shares how his journey from pioneering wireless video at Teradek, work that won both technical Academy and Emmy Awards, led him to ask why space was still flying blind. We trace TRL11's path from early in-orbit demos to commercial traction with operators and defense, and dig into how edge intelligence and video awareness could transform the space economy. We also discuss:• Why video is the “missing sensor” in space• Lessons from TRL11's first orbital missionsThe three core use cases: health monitoring, mission awareness, and mission enablement• How software, not hardware, creates a lasting moat in space video• The long-term vision of human-like awareness in space…and more. • Chapters •01:03 – Nicol and Starwars and Startrek03:10 – Nicol winning an Academy Award and an Emmy04:14 – Nicol at Teradek05:13 – How Teradek inspired Nicol's current company TRL1106:30 – How video applies to the space industry09:41 – Why do we need video and what problem does it solve?12:56 – A ring camera for space17:06 – The story behind the company name19:32 – TRL11's current product offerings21:43 – Showing the operator what matters on screen24:53 – How do you build a space camera?26:45 – What TRL11 has learned in their early orbit tests29:06 – TRL11's primary first customers32:25 – Making the case for investors36:45 – Should every spacecraft have video onboard?38:03 – The importance of video for inspiration40:03 – Misunderstandings when it comes to video from partners, investors, and customers41:10 – Lessons Nicol learned building a company in the space industry42:42 – Fundraising at TRL1144:26 – Legacy and product evolution • Show notes •TRL11's website — https://www.trl11.com/Mo's socials — https://twitter.com/itsmoislamPayload's socials — https://twitter.com/payloadspace / https://www.linkedin.com/company/payloadspaceIgnition's socials — https://twitter.com/ignitionnuclear / https://www.linkedin.com/company/ignition-nuclear/Tectonic's socials — https://twitter.com/tectonicdefense / https://www.linkedin.com/company/tectonicdefense/Valley of Depth archive — Listen: https://pod.payloadspace.com/ • About us •Valley of Depth is a podcast about the technologies that matter — and the people building them. What if the Bible isn't something you read—but something you hear, memorize, and perform? In this groundbreaking episode, Dr. Fausto Liriano shares his work translating the Bible into indigenous languages without writing it down. Through oral Bible translation projects in Guatemala, Mexico, and the Philippines, Dr. Liriano helps communities internalize Scripture in their own languages—through performance, storytelling, and memorization. He explains how this work challenges not only Western assumptions about literacy and theology, but also confronts colonial patterns in missionary work, translation philosophy, and even what counts as “canonical” Scripture. The episode explores how indigenous languages often mirror Hebrew's poetic ambiguity more than Spanish or English do, why repetition and redundancy are theological tools, and how people with no formal education are memorizing and performing hours of biblical material with precision and reverence. Dr. Liriano also reflects on the need for contextual theology in Latin America—one that isn't imported from the North, but developed by the people, for the people. In this episode, I unpack 10 of the most common misunderstandings I've encountered about the local church—from both within the Body and from the outside. Many believers today hold distorted views shaped more by culture than by Scripture. Whether it's the idea that “church is optional,” or the belief that online worship can fully replace embodied fellowship, these misunderstandings weaken our witness, rob us of spiritual maturity, and fracture the unity of Christ's Body. If we want to see a healthy, Kingdom-advancing church in our generation, we must return to a biblical vision of what the local church is—and why it still matters.

(00:01) Avoiding Golf Game Ruiners This chapter is all about how external factors like extreme heat and internal factors like negative thoughts can ruin a golf game. We discuss how the recent heatwave across the Midwest and East Coast has made playing outdoors unbearable and potentially dangerous, especially for those with health conditions. To counteract this, indoor golf facilities have become increasingly popular, offering technology that simulates outdoor conditions with impressive accuracy. We also touch on the mental aspects of golf, exploring how bad thoughts and poor self-awareness can derail even the most consistent players. Our goal is to help golfers recognize these challenges and find ways to get back on track, whether it's by avoiding harsh weather conditions or seeking help to restore their confidence and swing. (10:22) Avoiding Bad Golf Swing Advice This chapter focuses on the pitfalls that can sabotage your golf game, highlighting the dangers of relying too heavily on social media for swing advice. We discuss how the endless stream of tips and tricks from platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube can be overwhelming and often misleading, especially when the advice isn't tailored to your specific needs or skill level. We emphasize the importance of not succumbing to the allure of quick fixes and snake oil solutions offered by self-proclaimed experts online. Instead, understanding your unique swing characteristics and focusing on repeatable, personalized techniques is crucial for genuine improvement. We also touch on the perils of listening to well-meaning but potentially misguided advice from fellow golfers on the course. (23:25) Understanding Clubface Alignment and Swing This chapter focuses on the challenge many golfers face in aligning their clubface correctly. We explore how the design of a golf club, with its forward-leaning shaft and the manufacturer's intended alignment, can make it difficult for players to ensure the clubface is perpendicular to the target. By extending arms straight out as if holding a baseball bat, golfers can better see how the clubface should be aligned, focusing on the leading edge and bottom grooves rather than the top line. We also discuss the importance of recognizing both the clubface's position and one's body alignment to the target. Misunderstandings in these areas can lead to inefficiencies and unnecessary complexity in the golf swing, ultimately affecting performance. Recognizing and trusting the intended design and alignment of the club can help golfers avoid common pitfalls and improve their game. (29:07) Avoiding Bad Club and Shot Choices This chapter explores the parallels between bowling and golf, emphasizing the strategic thinking and skill involved in both sports. We discuss the impact of ego on golf performance, sharing a personal story about a scramble game where poor shot choice led to a double bogey. The conversation highlights the importance of realistic club selection based on actual performance rather than assumptions. Factors like elevation, humidity, and personal condition can significantly influence club choice. We stress the need for golfers to use their brains over ego and to accurately assess their capabilities and conditions when playing to avoid common pitfalls that can damage their game. (42:23) Understanding Wind's Impact on Golf This chapter covers the impact of wind on a golf ball's flight, emphasizing that wind at ground level is less significant compared to the wind at higher altitudes where the ball reaches its peak trajectory. I discuss how the ball's speed and trajectory are affected as it ascends and descends, especially when encountering wind, which can lead to unexpected outcomes like landing in water instead of on the green. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding these dynamics to avoid a poor game and make better decisions on the course. Additionally, we remind listeners to keep these insights in mind to enhance their golfing experience and ensure a more enjoyable round.
Sometimes we can misunderstand each other, and that can lead to division. Our Lord says He came to establish division rather than peace, but what does He mean by that? It could be that we misunderstand Him.Listen to my homily to learn more. (I added an announcement to this homily re-recording which makes it seem longer than it actually was when given at Mass).

On this episode of In The Circle, we get a unique inquiry from Rebecca, who says, "Alcohol is not ruining my life, but I can't stop drinking."This is especially important for those in recovery, and yet relevant for everyone, too. This inquiry is for the person who does not identify as an alcoholic. This is for the person who isn't going to necessarily end up at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. This is for the person who can stop drinking for a week or two, but finds themselves going back to it again, and again, and again. The severe alcoholic in one single respect has it easier than anybody else, because there's no question that they have an addiction, and there's no question that they need to change. But we do not agree with the premise that people need to be utterly broken in their lives to try something new. What if we didn't judge drinking as good or bad? What if we just reflected upon our own experience, our feelings, and decided for ourselves from that place? Why do men and women so often miss each other completely despite the best of intentions? Misunderstandings between the sexes often lead to tension, hurt, and total communication breakdown. Today's guest, relationship expert Alison Armstrong, brings decades of research on male behavior to the table. She reveals how women unintentionally emasculate men by over-correcting, over-explaining, or interrupting. These habits push men out of their natural state of protect-and-provide into a posture of defense and retreat. Alison breaks down how to talk to men (hint: stop interpreting their reactions like they're female) and how just a few simple shifts can lead to dramatic transformation. In this episode of Quality Matters, host Andy Reynolds welcomes Bryn Rhodes and Rob Reynolds of Smile Digital Health to unravel two foundational, yet widely misunderstood, technologies in health care: Clinical Quality Language (CQL) and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR). With decades of leadership in health care standards, Bryn and Rob share hard-earned insights, persistent misconceptions and what the future holds for digital transformation in such areas as clinical reasoning and quality measurement.Listen to this episode to discover:Why CQL and FHIR Are Often Misunderstood and Why That Matters: CQL enables knowledge and logic sharing, while FHIR facilitates data exchange. Together, they empower precise and scalable healthcare interventions.CQL's Human Readability is More Than a Feature; It's a Gateway: Learn how CQL's intuitive language design bridges clinical and technical teams, reduces errors in translation and is already proving to be a strong match for AI-based tools and systems. Why FHIR Alone Doesn't Guarantee Interoperability: Hear why true interoperability requires coordinated expectations between parties, including common terminology and agreed use cases.Business Strategy Meets Standards Adoption: Learn why treating interoperability as a strategic imperative (not just compliance) can unlock innovation, lower costs and drive better population health outcomes.CQL Engine News: NCQA Chief Technology Officer Ed Yurcisin updates the quality community on the role of CQL engines, why no engine covers all use cases and how NCQA's open-source engine is moving the industry forward. This conversation is a must-listen for health care leaders, B2B strategists and informatics professionals navigating digital transformation. It's packed with actionable ideas, tech-forward insights and a human-centered approach to quality's future. Key Quote:“I'm delighted you're hearing FHIR and CQL used together because that wasn't always the case. People in the past used them separately and thought these things are completely distinct. Both of them have their power and bring the value separately, but you need both of them to achieve greater value. If you have FHIR, you have the ability to share the data. We can express questions. ‘What about this, about the data?' We can do that in a shared, interoperable way with CQL.But if the data isn't interoperable, the ability to share questions doesn't do much because you can't get the data that those questions are about. So hearing people talk about those things in the same sentence, that's fantastic. That's exactly where we need to be.“ -Rob Reynolds Time Stamps:(02:00) The Relationship Between FHIR and CQL(08:20) Common Misconceptions About CQL and FHIR(12:57) NCQA's Commitment to CQL(17:40) Advice for Adopting CQL and FHIRDive Deeper:Episode 18 of Quality Matters with Ed YurcisinEpisode 19 of Quality Matters with Ed YurcisinConnect with Rob ReynoldsConnect with Bryn Rhodes
The sign that we're overthinking is that whatever we're doing starts to feel difficult and we start to feel more confused and urgent. The more we think, the more we get lost in our thoughts. Often our life training, or our inclination, is to keep trying harder to figure things out. But the feeling of confusion or urgency that arises is a warning sign that what we really need is to quiet down, give our thinking a rest, and get a fresh start. It doesn't require a long time, just a clear mind. When we're making something too hard, the focus turns personal -- we start thinking we should be able to do this, or we can't afford to fail... The relief of just stopping, glancing away, slowing down, giving ourselves a minute, brings us back to the moment and opens our minds to fresh, clearer ideas. A colleague often refers to this as like a deer finding its way through the woods; it will stop often, look around, sniff the air, and stay quiet for a bit until it "sees" where to go next, then set off again.Support the show
We delve into a critical moment in Israel's history as described in Joshua 22. After seven years of conquest, Israel finally experiences rest, but a new conflict arises when the eastern tribes build an altar near the Jordan River. Misunderstandings escalate to the brink of civil war as the western tribes prepare for battle, believing the altar breaches God's commands. A delegation led by Phinehas confronts the eastern tribes, only to learn that the altar is meant as a witness to future generations, not for sacrifices. Through dialogue and reason, the conflict is resolved, and unity is restored.Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App! We sometimes make relationships and communications more difficult than they need to be through innocent misunderstanding of the state of mind that facilitates good communication. Common communication problems are not truly listening, which happens when we're thinking about the next point we want to make or taking things personally and thinking about ourselves rather than listening for the point. To sidestep awkward or difficult communication, we can listen to the other(s) from a quiet mind, without personal thinking or analysis that muddles our listening for the others' point.Support the show

He takes a deep dive into technique as he discusses elements that a lot of golfers misundestand: Hitting Down in Contrast to Presenting Better Dynamic Loft for better Strikes and more Power How to effectively Make Changes for Consistency when embarking on Game Improvement Measures, and Managing Expectations and Setting Positive Timelines for Improvement. As he elaborates on these important topics Dana talks about Ben Hogan, Mac O'Grady, Lee Trevino and Bryson DeChambeau. He also talks about game improvement's "Heirarchy of Needs" and how hitting the shot that is needed is better than hitting a good shot - as he uses Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler as examples.
