In what might feel like a rare break from sunshine, the UK is preparing itself for the most spectacular solar eclipse in a generation. The cosmic phenomenon occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, meaning the country will be slowly plunged into darkness. So, how can you watch safely? What is it about an eclipse that fascinates us? And with the Perseid meteor shower also taking place, what other celestial wonders might you witness if you make a habit of gazing up at the night sky? Niall Paterson is joined by Dr Jenifer Millard, co-presenter of the Awesome Astronomy podcast. To find your nearest eclipse event, click here. Have you got a question for Niall? Email us: why@sky.uk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH4uczqmhQ0 From Jan 20, 2023. The James Webb Space Telescope took time away from finding the earliest galaxies or imaging incredible nebulae to test out its planet hunting capabilities. To say it was immediately successful would be an understatement. JWST is showing us that it can do almost anything in astronomy and cosmology. Its latest trick is picking out an exoplanet candidate, confirming it exists and telling us about this alien world. LHS 475 is a red dwarf star 41 light-years away from our Solar System in the southern hemisphere constellation of Octans. And now we know a lot more about its planet, LHS 475 b. Taking a look at how over the last 40 years we went from only knowing of the handful of planets in our solar system to knowing of around 5,000 planets littering the galaxy. How have we discovered new planets? How many are there? How many stars have planets around them? Are there star systems with multiple planets like our solar system? Do we see the diversity of large gassy, small rocky and ringed planets around other stars? And the big one - are any of them habitable? Find out in this episode! The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCqg3NIwbHE Hosted by Ralph Wilkins. From Feb 3, 2023. Nuclear powered rockets are about to become a reality opening up space travel for humanity. Ever since the dawn of nuclear weapons and reactors, advanced militaries and space agencies have dreamt of powering rockets with long lasting energy efficient nuclear fuel. The Soviet Union and United States ran a number of programs to develop nuclear propulsive power for human spaceflight. Deep space robotic spacecraft, lunar and Mars rovers have all been powered by 'nuclear batteries' in the past - as have experiments that the Apollo astronauts took to the moon - but no nuclear rocket engines have been tested, let alone flown, in space. That is about to change with a NASA/DARPA collaboration to do just that in the hope of cutting the time to travel to Mars by more than half. This lander spent 6 years on the Martian surface examining the interior of the planet. It discovered that Mars is not geologically dead as we previously thought. It discovered that Mars has a larger core than we thought, its magnetic field was stronger than we thought and the crust is thinner. And in typical NASA fashion, it made us all sad to think of the little fella dying in the cold Martian dirt. The heartless swines! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dqqw579DOY Paul Hill & Dr. Jenifer “Dr. Dust” Millard host. Damien Phillips, John Wildridge and Dustin Ruoff produce. From Dec 9, 2022. At AstroCamp. Astronomy 101 - Everything you need to know about asteroids! - What are they? - What are they made of? - Where are they?? Dr. Jen tells us how we understand so much about these small(ish) objects far away in the Asteroid Belt. Is the asteroid Belt really like the sci-fi depictions and are there other places in the solar system where these fragments of the early solar system roam? And no talk on asteroids would be complete without considering the threat to Earth (and all life on Earth) from them...
